South Korea’s resident virtual-asset income-tax regime is scheduled to start on 1 January 2027, not on a 2026 tax return. The National Tax Service (NTS) says transfers and lending from that date will be separately taxed as other income. A separate overseas financial-account disclosure can already matter for some 2026 filings, and it is not the same thing as tax on cryptocurrency gains. This guide explains the scheduled rules, who they cover, how the calculation is described, and what records to keep as of 16 October 2026.
What a South Korean resident should report for 2026
If you are a Korean tax resident, do not treat the NTS’s scheduled virtual-asset regime as a tax charge on cryptocurrency disposals made during 2026. A December 2024 amendment to the Income Tax Act postponed the regime by two years. The NTS currently describes the start date as 1 January 2027 for covered transfers and lending.
That means the answer to “Do I have to pay South Korean crypto tax on my 2026 gains?” is not under this scheduled virtual-asset income-tax regime, based on the NTS guidance currently available. This statement does not remove other possible tax or reporting obligations that could arise from a different activity or legal provision.

First determine which taxpayer category applies
Korean tax residents
The resident overview is written for individuals treated as residents under Korean tax rules. Residency is a legal status, not simply the country where an exchange account was opened or where you happened to be on a trading day. If your residence status changed during a year, obtain advice before applying the resident calculation to the entire period.
For a resident, the scheduled rules concern income from transferring or lending virtual assets within the statutory definition. They use an annual calculation, a 2.5 million KRW basic deduction and a 20% rate, all described by the NTS as prospective rules for the regime beginning in 2027.
Nonresidents and foreign corporations
Do not copy the resident treatment onto a nonresident return. The NTS has separate guidance stating that a nonresident or foreign corporation may have Korean-source other income from specified virtual-asset transactions in Korea. In covered cases, a Korean virtual-asset service provider withholds tax.

What the scheduled virtual-asset rules cover
Transfers and lending
The NTS describes the taxable category as income from transferring or lending virtual assets. “Transfer” is broader than a cash sale: the NTS overview has a specific method for virtual-asset exchanges, so it is unsafe to assume that a coin-to-coin swap is automatically outside the calculation.
Lending income is also listed separately. Keep the loan agreement or platform statement, the asset and quantity lent, dates, amounts received, fees and the identity of the counterparty or service. The current overview does not resolve every lending structure, such as collateral, liquidations or returns paid in a different asset.
What counts as a virtual asset
The NTS uses the definition in the Virtual Asset User Protection Act. The definition is not a synonym for every digital record. The NTS lists exclusions that include certain restricted electronic records, game results, prepaid electronic payment means, electronic money, electronically registered shares, electronic bills, electronic bills of lading and electronic money issued by the Bank of Korea.
Classify the item under the statutory definition rather than relying on a platform’s marketing label. A token called a “coin,” “point” or “credit” may not receive the same treatment. Conversely, changing an asset’s ticker or moving it between platforms does not by itself establish whether a taxable transfer occurred.

Activities the current overview does not fully explain
The NTS summary does not provide a complete rule set for every possible digital-asset receipt or transaction. It does not, in the material currently available, give a definitive treatment for every staking arrangement, mining activity, airdrop, liquidity-pool position, wrapped asset, derivative or self-custody movement. Do not force those activities into the transfer-and-lending formula without checking the law and later implementation guidance.
How the scheduled gain calculation is described
Start with proceeds
For a covered disposal or lending event, the NTS describes income as the proceeds reduced by the asset’s actual acquisition cost and associated expenses. Proceeds may be cash or the value used for an exchange under the NTS method. Preserve the exchange statement or pricing data that supports the amount used.
Subtract acquisition cost and related expenses
Document what you paid to acquire the asset and the expenses directly associated with the transaction. Typical records include exchange trade confirmations, deposit and withdrawal histories, broker or platform fees, bank records and invoices. A spreadsheet should retain the original currency, quantity, timestamp, Korean-won conversion method and transaction identifier rather than only a converted profit figure.

Total-average cost basis for a resident
For disposal gains, the NTS describes a total-average cost basis per resident. This is an annual, resident-level approach rather than a simple “pick the oldest lot” rule for each wallet. Consolidate your holdings and acquisition records across exchanges and wallets before calculating the basis. The final implementation guidance may specify data and valuation details that the current overview does not yet spell out.
Assets held before 1 January 2027
For an asset already held before the regime begins, the NTS states that the deemed acquisition cost is the higher of the actual acquisition cost and the asset’s fair value on 31 December 2026. Keep evidence for both figures. “Fair value” should not be replaced casually with an unexplained price from an unrelated platform; retain the valuation source and the time or market convention used when the final rules require it.
When the actual post-implementation cost cannot be confirmed
For an asset acquired after implementation where the actual acquisition cost cannot be confirmed, the NTS page describes a deemed expense allowance of up to 50% of proceeds, subject to further rules. “Up to” is important: it is not an automatic 50% deduction in every case. Maintain whatever evidence exists and wait for the applicable conditions and documentation requirements before using the allowance.
Coin-to-coin exchanges
The NTS overview provides a method for exchanges based on the value of the base virtual asset and the exchange ratio. In practical terms, record the asset surrendered, the asset received, the quantity and ratio, the valuation used for the base asset, fees and the exact time. A swap that never touched Korean won can still be relevant to the scheduled calculation.

Illustrative calculations using the NTS’s stated framework
The examples below are arithmetic illustrations, not official rulings and not a substitute for the final implementation guidance. They assume a Korean resident, a covered transfer from 2027, complete records and no issue about residency or asset classification.
| Example | Calculation before the annual deduction | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Cash sale | Proceeds of 8,000,000 KRW − acquisition cost of 5,000,000 KRW − directly associated expenses of 100,000 KRW | 2,900,000 KRW net gain |
| Gain below the basic deduction | Net annual gains of 2,400,000 KRW | The stated 2.5 million KRW annual basic deduction would leave no amount subject to the scheduled rate, assuming no other rule changes. |
| Gain above the basic deduction | Net annual gains of 7,000,000 KRW − 2,500,000 KRW deduction | 4,500,000 KRW taxable base; at the stated 20% rate, 900,000 KRW before any separate statutory adjustments. |
| Pre-2027 holding | Actual cost 3,000,000 KRW; 31 December 2026 fair value 4,200,000 KRW | The stated deemed acquisition cost would be the higher figure, 4,200,000 KRW, subject to the final rules and evidence requirements. |
The 2.5 million KRW deduction is annual and applies to the scheduled virtual-asset income calculation. It is not the same as the 500 million KRW threshold used for overseas financial-account disclosure.
Rate, deduction and filing timing
| Item | Amount or timing stated by the NTS | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Basic deduction | 2.5 million KRW per year | Part of the scheduled resident virtual-asset income-tax regime. |
| Tax rate | 20% | Stated for separately taxed other income under the future regime. |
| Tax category | Separately taxed other income | Applies to covered transfers and lending from 1 January 2027 under the current NTS description. |
| Filing period | The following year’s May comprehensive income-tax filing period | For example, 2027 covered income is expected to be handled in May 2028, subject to later instructions. |
These figures are the NTS’s current prospective description as of 16 October 2026. Tax legislation, enforcement decrees and filing instructions can change before the first filing season. Recheck the NTS notice that applies when you actually file.
Using an overseas exchange or receiving foreign-currency proceeds
Using a foreign exchange does not by itself remove a Korean resident from the resident rules. You still need to determine whether a transaction is a covered transfer or lending event and preserve the value and cost records.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe NTS’s general English FAQ on foreign-source income says Korean residents report foreign-source income in Korean won using the exchange rate in effect when the income is received. That guidance is general and does not answer every cryptocurrency-specific conversion question, including which timestamp to use for a token-to-token swap, how to value a receipt in kind, or how to handle multiple foreign currencies and fees. Keep the original currency amount, the receipt date, the exchange-rate source and your conversion calculation so the method can be reviewed.
Foreign tax paid, treaty questions and foreign-tax-credit treatment can require a separate analysis. Do not assume that a foreign platform’s tax statement automatically satisfies Korean record or conversion requirements.
Overseas financial-account disclosure is a different obligation
The NTS’s overseas financial-account materials for the 2026 reporting season include virtual assets among reportable assets. They state a threshold of aggregate balances exceeding 500 million KRW on at least one month-end during 2025 and identify a June 2026 filing period for that reporting year.
This is an account-balance disclosure test, not a tax-free allowance and not a measure of cryptocurrency gains. A person can have no taxable gain under the scheduled virtual-asset regime and still need to examine the overseas-account disclosure rules if the month-end balance condition is met. Conversely, a gain can exceed 2.5 million KRW without creating an overseas-account filing obligation if the account-balance test is not met.
Include all relevant overseas accounts and virtual-asset holdings when testing the threshold under the NTS instructions. Because the materials concern the 2025 reporting year and a June 2026 filing period, confirm the current year’s threshold, covered account types and deadline before filing a later report.

Records to build before the 2027 regime begins
The most useful preparation is a complete, auditable transaction history rather than a single profit number exported from one exchange.
- Identity and residency: retain documents supporting your Korean tax-resident status for each relevant year.
- Acquisitions: record date, time, asset, quantity, purchase currency, Korean-won value, fees, exchange and transaction ID.
- Disposals: record the asset surrendered, quantity, proceeds, receiving currency or asset, valuation source and fees.
- Exchanges: keep both sides of every coin-to-coin swap, the exchange ratio and the base-asset valuation used.
- Lending: save contracts, platform statements, collateral movements, repayment dates, interest or other returns and fees.
- Pre-2027 holdings: preserve evidence of actual cost and a defensible 31 December 2026 fair-value record.
- Uncertain-cost assets: keep every available deposit, withdrawal, wallet and exchange record before considering any deemed allowance.
- Overseas balances: retain month-end statements and a calculation showing whether aggregate balances crossed the applicable disclosure threshold.
- Backups: export records in a machine-readable format and keep an unaltered copy with access dates and file names.
Do not delete a transaction because it was later reversed, transferred to your own wallet or paired with a loss. The event may be needed to reconcile quantities and establish the basis of a later disposal, even where its final tax treatment requires clarification.

Mistake: paying the future tax on a 2026 return
The scheduled regime begins with covered transfers and lending from 1 January 2027. Applying the 20% rate and 2.5 million KRW deduction to 2026 activity without a separate legal basis confuses the postponed start date with the filing year.
Mistake: treating the 500 million KRW threshold as a gain exemption
The threshold belongs to overseas financial-account disclosure and is measured by aggregate balances at a month-end, not by annual profit. It does not make gains below that amount tax-free.
Mistake: assuming foreign-exchange trades are invisible
The NTS includes a method for virtual-asset exchanges. Record swaps even when no Korean won or foreign fiat was received.
Mistake: using one wallet’s cost basis
The resident overview describes a total-average basis per resident. Consolidating every exchange and wallet is essential when the same asset was acquired through multiple services.
Mistake: automatically claiming 50% of proceeds
The NTS describes a deemed allowance of up to 50% only where post-implementation acquisition cost cannot be confirmed and subject to further rules. It is not a universal shortcut.
Mistake: applying resident rules to a nonresident
Nonresident and foreign-corporation guidance addresses Korean-source income and possible withholding by a Korean virtual-asset service provider. Establish status first.

What to verify before you file
- Check the latest NTS resident virtual-asset notice and any amendment to the Income Tax Act or enforcement rules.
- Confirm whether each asset is a statutory virtual asset rather than an excluded electronic record.
- Separate transfers, exchanges and lending from movements that have no disposal or lending event under the applicable guidance.
- Reconcile quantities and costs across every exchange, broker, hardware wallet and self-custody address.
- Apply the stated pre-2027 valuation rule where relevant and document the valuation evidence.
- Calculate annual net gains, then apply the 2.5 million KRW deduction and 20% rate only if the final rules remain unchanged.
- Check the separate overseas-account disclosure test using the correct reporting year and month-end balances.
- If you are nonresident, cross-border, close to the disclosure threshold, or involved in complex lending or exchange activity, ask the NTS or a qualified Korean tax professional to review the treatment.
The current NTS overview does not publish a complete step-by-step Hometax workflow or promise that a particular 2027 form is already available. Follow the form names, electronic fields and deadlines shown in the instructions released for the filing year rather than relying on an old screenshot or a platform’s tax export.
Frequently asked questions
When is South Korea’s cryptocurrency tax scheduled to start?
The NTS currently says covered transfers and lending from 1 January 2027 will be separately taxed as other income, following a two-year postponement in a December 2024 Income Tax Act amendment.
Does moving cryptocurrency between my own wallets create a reportable gain?
The current NTS overview does not provide a complete operational rule for every self-custody movement. Keep wallet addresses, transaction IDs and quantities so that a transfer between your own wallets can be distinguished from a disposal, exchange or lending event, and obtain advice for unusual chains of transactions.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Are staking rewards or airdrops covered by the 2027 formula?
The summarized resident guidance focuses on transfers and lending and does not establish a definitive treatment for every staking reward or airdrop. Their classification may depend on how the income is received and on later implementation guidance.
What if I cannot prove when or how much I paid?
Reconstruct the history from exchange exports, bank statements, wallet records and counterparties first. For certain post-implementation assets with unconfirmable acquisition cost, the NTS describes a deemed expense allowance of up to 50% of proceeds, but the conditions and permitted amount must be checked against the rules in force.
Can a foreign exchange account trigger a Korean filing even without a gain?
Possibly. The overseas financial-account rules use an aggregate month-end balance test and list virtual assets among reportable assets. That disclosure obligation is separate from whether you have taxable gains under the scheduled virtual-asset income-tax regime.
What should a nonresident do?
Use the NTS’s nonresident guidance rather than the resident calculation. A Korean virtual-asset service provider may withhold tax on specified Korean-source transactions, and the correct result depends on your status and the transaction facts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2.5 million KRW amount a lifetime cryptocurrency allowance?
No. The NTS describes it as an annual basic deduction within the scheduled resident virtual-asset income-tax calculation.
Does the 500 million KRW overseas-account threshold mean I owe tax on 500 million KRW of assets?
No. It is a balance-based disclosure threshold tested at a month-end, not a tax rate, gain amount or tax-free allowance.

The current NTS overview does not provide a complete operational 2027 filing workflow. Use the NTS instructions and forms released for the filing year.
