In Google Messages on Android, long-press an unknown conversation and choose Block; add Report spam if you want Google to receive a spam report as well. Both actions put the conversation under Spam & blocked, and you can reverse the result from that folder.
Choose the right action first
Google Messages separates blocking from reporting. Blocking uses the app’s built-in control to stop the sender in Messages. Reporting is optional: it blocks the sender, moves the conversation to Spam & blocked, and sends information to Google to improve spam detection.

If you are sure you only want the messages out of your inbox, select Block without reporting. If the message is deceptive, unsolicited, or part of a scam, use Report spam so Google can use the report in its detection systems.

Block from the Home screen
- Open Google Messages.
- On the Home screen, touch and hold the conversation from the unknown sender.
- Tap Block.
- Confirm the action.
The sender is blocked in Google Messages and the conversation is handled through Spam & blocked. This path does not send a spam report to Google unless you select the reporting option in the confirmation flow.

Block and report in the same confirmation flow
- Open Google Messages and touch and hold the unknown sender’s conversation.
- Tap Block.
- In the confirmation prompt, choose Report spam if you want to submit the report.
- Tap OK.
Google’s documented behavior is: “When you report a conversation as spam, you also block the sender and move the message to your ‘Spam & blocked’ folder.” Reporting is not required to block the sender.
Report or block while the conversation is open
If you are already reading the message, you do not need to return to the conversation list.
- Open the conversation in Google Messages.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Details.
- Tap Block & report spam.
- Tap OK to confirm.
This route combines the two actions: the sender is blocked and a spam report is submitted. Use the Home-screen Block route instead when you want to block without reporting.
Find the Spam & blocked folder
Spam & blocked is where Google Messages keeps conversations that have been blocked or reported. It is also the place to recover a conversation if you blocked the wrong sender.

- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile photo or profile icon.
- Tap More options.
- Choose Spam & blocked.
Open a conversation in this folder to inspect it, or select the contact when you need to unblock the sender. If you do not see the exact wording, the menu may use a slightly different label on your Android version, Google Messages release, device, language, or country.
Unblock a sender on Android
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile photo or profile icon.
- Tap More options, then choose Spam & blocked.
- Select the contact you want to restore.
- Tap Unblock.
Google says that unblocking removes the spam report and moves the conversation back to the Home screen. The restored thread is therefore no longer kept in Spam & blocked.
Use Google Messages for web
Block and report from the conversation list
- Open Google Messages for web and locate the conversation.
- Open More options next to the person’s name.
- Choose Block & report spam.
- Confirm the action.
The web interface uses the combined block-and-report command. The documented web procedure does not present a separate block-only choice in that menu, so use the Android app when you need to block without sending a report.

Unblock on the web
- Open More options in the conversation list.
- Choose Spam & blocked.
- Select the contact.
- Choose Unblock.
- Click Done.
The contact leaves the blocked list and the conversation returns to the normal message list according to Google’s documented web flow.

What a spam report sends to Google
Reporting is more than moving a thread out of your inbox. Google states that a spam report sends the spammer’s phone number and the last 10 incoming messages to Google for spam-detection improvement.
- Each reported message can include the sender’s phone number and its timestamp.
- RCS messages can include an RCS Message ID.
- A report from an RCS group can include an RCS Group ID and group metadata.
- Your past replies are not sent as part of the report.
- Google says the reporter’s name and phone number are not linked to the spammer’s messages.
Because reporting sends message content and associated metadata, choose Block alone when you want the sender stopped but do not want to submit those details. Reporting remains optional even when the message clearly looks like spam.
How Google Messages handles suspected scams automatically
Google Messages uses on-device machine-learning models to classify suspected scams. Depending on the message, the app can automatically move a suspected scam to spam or warn you before you interact with it.
Google has also tested controls for unknown international senders in selected markets. That does not mean every account or country has the same control. Availability and menu wording can change with the Android version, Google Messages app release, device, language, and country.

Automatic protection does not replace the manual actions above. When an unwanted message reaches your inbox, you can still decide whether to block only or to block and report it.

Use Block when you want a private, reversible cleanup
- The sender is unwanted, but you do not want to submit message content.
- You are uncertain whether the message is actually spam.
- You may need to restore the conversation later.
Blocking keeps the decision inside Google Messages. You can later open Spam & blocked and use Unblock.
Use Block & report spam when the message is deceptive or unsolicited
- The message impersonates a company, delivery service, bank, government agency, or another person.
- It asks for passwords, payment details, verification codes, or urgent action.
- You want Google to receive the sender and recent-message information used for spam-detection improvement.
Reporting automatically includes blocking, so you do not need to perform the two actions separately.

A reply is not required for either action. Reporting sends the last 10 incoming messages and their relevant metadata; it does not require you to continue the conversation. Avoiding a reply also prevents you from giving the sender additional information.

Troubleshooting missing or different menu options
You cannot find “Spam & blocked”
Start from the Google Messages Home screen and tap your profile photo or icon. The folder is under More options. If the labels differ, check that you are using Google Messages rather than another SMS application, then look for the equivalent spam or blocked-conversations entry in the profile menu.
The confirmation prompt does not show “Report spam”
The reporting choice appears in the block confirmation flow. Touch and hold the conversation, tap Block, and inspect the confirmation screen before accepting. If you only confirm the block, the sender is blocked without a report; you can repeat the procedure if you decide a report is appropriate.
The sender is not listed after you block it
Open Spam & blocked from the profile menu rather than searching the Home screen. Blocked and reported conversations are stored there, so they are not expected to remain in the main conversation list.
You blocked the wrong contact
Go to Profile photo or icon > More options > Spam & blocked, select the contact, and tap Unblock. Google says this removes the spam report and restores the conversation to Home.
The web menu looks different from the Android app
The web workflow uses More options beside a conversation, followed by Block & report spam. The recovery path is More options > Spam & blocked, select the contact, Unblock, then Done. Differences between web and Android are expected because they expose different menu paths.

Important limits and expectations
- The instructions apply to Google Messages. Another messaging app may use different controls and folder names.
- Google’s menu labels and automatic-protection features are not guaranteed to be identical on every Android version, app release, device, language, or country.
- Blocking and reporting are separate choices on Android, while the documented web command combines them.
- Unblocking is performed from Spam & blocked; it is not done from the ordinary Home conversation list.
- Reporting is optional, but it has a privacy consequence because Google receives the sender’s number, up to 10 incoming messages, and applicable message metadata.
A quick decision checklist
- Is the sender simply unwanted, with no clear evidence of spam? Choose Block.
- Does the message look like a scam, phishing attempt, or mass unsolicited text? Choose Block, then select Report spam.
- Do you need to reverse the decision? Open Spam & blocked and select Unblock.
- Are you working from a computer? Use the web conversation menu; remember that its documented command is Block & report spam.
