Keep your distance, keep children and pets away, and do not touch, chase or contain the lizard. If it is safe, photograph it and record the date, time, exact location, habitat and condition. Send a routine observation to the environment or threatened-species agency in the Australian state or territory where you saw it. For a sick or injured animal, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, a veterinarian or WIRES on 1300 094 737.
Start with safety, not identification
A lizard that looks unusual, large or vulnerable can still bite, scratch or injure itself if it is cornered. Australian monitor lizards are often called goannas, but the safest response is the same whether you know the species or not. WIRES states: “If you see any species of Monitor Lizard, please keep your distance, do not try to touch it or contain it.”
Keep people and pets back
- Stay far enough away that the lizard can move normally and has a clear escape route.
- Keep children, dogs and other pets away from the animal and its path.
- Do not block it against a fence, vehicle, rock or building.
- Do not pick it up, place it in a box, move it from the road or try to give it food or water.
These precautions apply even when you suspect the lizard is endangered. A close approach can create more harm than the original disturbance, and an observer cannot determine legal threatened status from appearance alone.
Decide whether it is a routine observation or a welfare emergency

Collect evidence without disturbing the lizard
The Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) advises: “Avoid contact and keep your distance. Record the date, time, location and take photos.” Those four items form the core of a useful report. Additional observations help an agency identify the animal and triage its condition.

Record the date and time
Write down the local date and time as soon as you can. If your phone records a different time zone, include the time zone or state that the time is local. A report made later should distinguish the sighting time from the submission time.
Pin down the location
Give the most precise location you can without approaching the animal. An address, reserve name, road and nearest landmark, GPS coordinates or a map pin can each help. For a remote sighting, describe the track, creek, campsite, kilometre marker or other fixed feature that would let an officer find the area. State the state or territory explicitly; the reporting channel is determined by where the animal was seen, not where you live.
Take photographs or video from a safe distance
Use the camera you already have and do not move closer to improve the image. A wide photograph showing the animal and its surroundings can be as useful as a close image because it records habitat and scale. If you take several images, keep the original files so their date, time and location metadata remain available. Never use a photograph as a reason to follow, corner or handle the lizard.

Describe the habitat and nearby landmarks
Note the broad setting: for example, bushland, woodland, wetland edge, rocky ground, a roadside verge or a suburban property. Add nearby landmarks, vegetation, water, structures or tracks that distinguish the location. These details are practical additions to the core DCCEEW fields and can help staff check the observation against known habitat.
Describe behaviour, number and condition
- Behaviour: state whether the lizard was basking, moving, climbing, hiding, swimming or displaying another behaviour you actually saw.
- Number: record whether you saw one animal or several.
- Condition: say whether it was alive, dead, apparently healthy, sick, injured, trapped or unable to move normally. Describe visible facts rather than diagnosing the cause.
- Disturbance: mention apparent hazards such as a cage, net, vehicle area or construction zone if they are relevant to the report.
If you cannot take a photograph, submit the written details anyway. A careful location and time are more useful than an unsafe attempt to obtain a perfect image.

Choose the reporting channel by state or territory
Australia does not have one universal public lizard-sighting form in the available official guidance. Use the environment, biodiversity or threatened-species agency for the state or territory in which the sighting happened. The Commonwealth framework explains threatened status, but routine field reports are normally directed through the relevant jurisdiction.
A simple jurisdiction selector
- Identify the place of the sighting. Use the state or territory boundary containing the animal, even if you were travelling or live elsewhere.
- Find that jurisdiction’s environment agency. On its official website, look for a wildlife sighting, threatened-species report, biodiversity report or wildlife disturbance channel.
- Follow the agency’s requested format. Some channels use an online form; others accept a telephone call or email. Enter the date, time, location and photographs, then add habitat, behaviour, count and condition.
- Use an emergency wildlife channel instead when the animal is sick or injured. A welfare emergency should not wait for a routine biodiversity form.
- Keep the submission reference or confirmation. If the form or officer provides one, retain it with your photographs and notes.
New South Wales
In New South Wales, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water says: “To report a disturbance caused by or to wildlife or bushland, contact the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.” The NSW Environment Line can receive a sighting and enter it into the BioNet Wildlife Atlas. The published contact number for this type of disturbance is 1300 361 967; the department also accepts reports by email.

Other states and territories
The contact details and forms for the other jurisdictions are not identical, and a single nationwide number should not be assumed. Use the official environment or threatened-species department for the jurisdiction where the animal was observed. If a reserve, park or land manager gives you a local reporting instruction, follow that instruction while ensuring the observation reaches the jurisdiction’s environment authority when the matter concerns threatened wildlife.
What to send in the report
Prepare the following information before opening a form or calling. You do not need to know the scientific name to make a useful report.

Contact: details requested by the reporting channelDo not include guesses as if they were facts. Write “large monitor-like lizard” or “species unknown” if that is all you can establish, and attach the clearest safe images.
Use the emergency route for an injured or sick animal
Routine biodiversity reporting and animal rescue serve different purposes. If the lizard is visibly sick or injured, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation provider or a veterinarian. WIRES directs callers to its 24/7 Rescue Line at 1300 094 737 and also provides a Report a Rescue form for sick or injured lizards and turtles.
Tell the responder exactly where the animal is and what condition you observed. Mention whether it is trapped, whether people or pets are nearby, and whether the location can be reached safely. Follow the responder’s instructions; do not improvise by transporting, feeding or containing a monitor lizard.
NSW guidance likewise recommends a veterinarian or licensed wildlife rehabilitation provider and asks for the animal’s location and condition. The NSW contact above is a reporting route for wildlife or bushland disturbance, while the rescue line is designed for immediate welfare assistance.
Understand what “endangered” means in Australia
The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) is the Australian Government’s principal environment law. DCCEEW lists threatened categories including extinct, extinct in the wild, critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable and conservation dependent. Listed species can receive conservation advice, recovery plans and assessment protections.

A public sighting does not, by itself, establish that a species belongs in one of those categories. Formal threatened status is determined through scientific assessment under the EPBC framework. That is why an uncertain observation is still worth reporting: an agency can check the images and location against its records without requiring the observer to make a legal or taxonomic judgment.
The wider context explains why reliable observations matter. DCCEEW estimates that Australia has between 600,000 and 700,000 species, with about 84% of plants, 83% of mammals and 45% of birds found nowhere else in the world. More than 1,700 threatened species and ecological communities are listed nationally. Those figures do not make every lizard sighting an emergency, but they show why location-specific records can contribute to conservation decisions.

Approaching for a close-up
A blurred photograph taken from a safe distance is preferable to a sharp photograph obtained by chasing the animal. Keep the original image and explain the distance or viewing conditions if identification is difficult.
Moving the lizard “to safety”
Do not place it in a container or relocate it. Monitors can be injured by capture, and moving wildlife can remove the location information an agency needs. Call the appropriate rescue channel if the animal is sick or injured.
Using the wrong jurisdiction
A phone number from another state may not create a record in the place where the sighting occurred. Confirm the state or territory first; NSW contacts are not nationwide.

Leaving out the location or time
“Seen near the bush” is not enough for a field record. Add a map pin, coordinates, road, reserve or landmark and the local date and time.
Declaring a species endangered yourself
Use neutral wording when identification is uncertain. The receiving agency can assess the species and its status under the relevant scientific and legal frameworks.
Posting publicly instead of reporting directly
A social-media post may not reach the agency that maintains wildlife records or arranges rescue. Submit through the official jurisdictional channel or the rescue service, then share publicly only if doing so does not disturb the animal or expose a sensitive location.

- See the lizard. Stop, keep your distance and move people and pets away.
- Check without approaching. Decide whether it appears mobile and uninjured or sick, injured, trapped or dead.
- Document safely. Record date, time, exact location, habitat, photographs, behaviour, count and condition.
- Choose the channel. Use the state or territory environment agency for a routine observation; use a licensed rehabilitator, veterinarian or WIRES for a welfare emergency.
- Describe uncertainty honestly. Report an unusual sighting even when the species is unknown.
- Preserve your notes. Keep original images and any confirmation or reference supplied by the agency.
This process gives authorities usable evidence while protecting the animal from the most common form of observer-caused harm: disturbance during identification or rescue.
