Save the evidence first, then report both the specific video and the account when both are involved. Copy the exact video URL, handle, profile URL, upload date, captions, comments, labels, and any statement presenting the synthetic speaker as real. Capture screenshots and a screen recording that includes the voice and its surrounding context. Keep an untouched original copy and note when you captured it.
On YouTube, use the impersonation report and, when an identifiable person’s voice or likeness was realistically generated without consent, the Privacy Complaint Process. On TikTok, report the post under Misinformation → Deepfakes, synthetic media, and manipulated media and file a separate account-impersonation report if the profile pretends to be the person. On Instagram, report the reel, post, or account using the closest current options for impersonation, privacy, harassment, manipulated media, or fraud. Threats, extortion, serious fraud, and election-related deception should also be documented and referred to the appropriate authorities.
Preserve evidence before you submit anything
Platforms can remove, edit, or restrict a post after you report it. A complete evidence package makes it easier to explain what happened and gives you a record if the platform asks follow-up questions or an authority needs the material.
- Copy the exact public URL. Do not rely on a shortened link or a search result. Save the video or post URL, the account or channel URL, and the visible username or handle.
- Record the timing. Write down the upload date and the date and time you captured the evidence, including your time zone if the matter may cross borders.
- Capture the context. Take screenshots of the profile, captions, title, thumbnail, on-screen text, labels identifying synthetic media, comments, and any claim that the speaker is authentic. Make a screen recording that plays enough of the video to show the voice, surrounding visuals, and the account identity.
- Preserve originals. Keep an unedited copy of every image, recording, downloaded transcript, and message. Work from duplicates when adding notes; do not edit the only copy.
- Establish identity and consent. If you are the person being mimicked, save an official profile link or other reliable material showing who you are. Gather contracts, messages, or other evidence showing that you did not authorize the voice or likeness use when that is relevant.
- Transcribe the important wording. Note the sentences spoken by the synthetic voice and identify statements that falsely attribute an opinion, instruction, endorsement, threat, or confession to the real person.
Do not amplify the video while collecting evidence. Avoid reposting it merely to warn others; a repost can spread the deception and create a second copy that must be reported.

Which report should you file?
The strongest route depends on what the post is doing and who is reporting it. A video can qualify for more than one route, so use separate forms when the platform provides them rather than trying to force every issue into a single category.

Reporting an AI voice impersonation on YouTube
Use impersonation reporting when the video misleads viewers
YouTube’s Impersonation Policy says, “YouTube does not allow unauthorized impersonation of a person, entity, or channel that may mislead viewers in a way that could harm the YouTube community.” Its example specifically covers misrepresenting an individual with an AI version of the person’s voice and false metadata so a fake speech appears real.
- Open the video and its channel page. Save the URLs and evidence before interacting with the report menu.
- Use the video’s report control when the principal problem is that the upload presents the synthetic speaker as the real person or falsely suggests the person made the statement.
- Describe the impersonation precisely: identify the real person, quote the misleading claim, explain that the voice is AI-generated or altered, and state whether the uploader disclosed that fact.
- If the whole channel adopts the person’s identity, open the channel-level reporting option as well. Include the channel name, handle, profile image, description, and representative videos.
Use YouTube’s privacy-removal process for realistic synthetic identity content
YouTube’s Privacy Guidelines state, “If someone has used AI to alter or create content that looks or sounds like you, you can ask for it to be removed.” This route is especially relevant when the person is uniquely identifiable and the realistic voice or likeness was used without consent.

YouTube says its review considers whether the material is altered or synthetic, whether that alteration is disclosed, whether the person is uniquely identifiable, the degree of realism, parody or satire, public interest, and public-figure context. A privacy request should therefore explain each factor rather than simply asserting that the audio is fake.
- Identify yourself as the person depicted or heard, or explain your authority to act for that person.
- Point to the exact timestamps or portions that reproduce the voice or likeness.
- Explain how an ordinary viewer can identify the person and why the presentation could be mistaken for an authentic statement.
- State clearly that you did not consent to this synthetic use, if that is true.
- Address context: say whether the upload lacks a parody or satire disclosure, creates a false endorsement, causes a specific risk, or uses a public figure in a way that still creates a privacy or safety concern.
- Attach identity evidence only through YouTube’s official form and redact unrelated sensitive information where possible.
A disclosure that content is synthetic is relevant to review but does not automatically make every use permissible. Conversely, a public figure or a satirical presentation may receive different treatment than an undisclosed realistic imitation used to deceive.

Reporting an AI voice deepfake on TikTok
Report the individual video
TikTok defines AI-generated content to include “Video featuring a real person speaking, whose image, voice, and/or words are altered or modified by AI.” The documented post-report path is:
- Open the video.
- Tap or click Report.
- Choose Misinformation.
- Select Deepfakes, synthetic media, and manipulated media.
- Submit the report with a concise explanation and any requested details.
TikTok documents this category in both the mobile app and a web browser. If the video is also a scam, threat, harassment campaign, or privacy violation, use the closest additional route available and explain the connection in the description.
Report an impersonating account separately
When the profile itself pretends to be the real person, file an account-impersonation report in addition to the video report. TikTok’s published flow asks reporters in the United States to choose the impersonation form and upload valid identification. Reporters outside the United States are directed to choose Account violation and Impersonation, then follow the form.
Use the identity-document step only in TikTok’s official reporting flow. Do not send identity documents to the uploader, to a commenter, or to an unofficial email address. If you are reporting for someone else, make the relationship and authority clear and let the form specify what evidence is accepted.
Check the report record
TikTok states, “TikTok will not disclose your identity to the person whose content or account you’re reporting.” Status may appear in the inbox or under Settings and Privacy → Support → Safety Center → Report Records. Save screenshots of confirmations and reference numbers before closing the report.

Reporting an AI voice impersonation on Instagram
Instagram’s exact menu wording can vary by app version, region, account type, and whether you are using the app or browser. Start with the reel, post, message, or profile’s in-app report control and select the closest current reason. Relevant choices may include impersonation, privacy, bullying or harassment, manipulated media, misinformation, or fraud.

Report the post or reel
- Open the reel or post and choose its report option.
- Select the category that best describes the harm, prioritizing impersonation or privacy when the synthetic voice is presented as a real identifiable person.
- Explain that the audio is AI-generated or altered, identify the person being imitated, quote the deceptive claim, and state whether the uploader disclosed the manipulation.
- Keep the original URL, screenshots, and confirmation after submitting.
Report the account
If the profile name, biography, profile picture, or repeated posts make the account appear to be the real person, open the profile-level report and choose the current impersonation option. A post-level report addresses the individual upload; an account-level report tells Instagram that the identity deception is broader.
Because labels change, verify the current wording in Instagram’s Help Center or in the logged-in report flow immediately before submission. Do not select a more dramatic category merely because it sounds stronger; choose the option that accurately describes the conduct and provide the factual explanation in the text field.
How to write an effective report
Moderators need identifiable facts, not a long argument about AI. Put the most verifiable information first.
- Who is being imitated: name the person and provide an official identity reference when the form allows it.
- What is synthetic: identify the voice, words, image, or metadata that was generated or altered.
- Where it appears: give the exact URL, handle, timestamps, and quoted wording.
- Why viewers could be misled: describe missing disclosure, false endorsement, fabricated confession, fake announcement, or other context.
- Consent: state whether permission was granted, revoked, or never requested.
- Harm and urgency: describe concrete risks such as financial loss, reputational damage, threats, stalking, or election interference without exaggeration.
A useful description is specific and neutral: “At 00:18–00:42, the upload uses an AI-generated imitation of [person] and presents the sentence ‘…’ as an authentic statement. The account uses the person’s name and photograph, gives no synthetic-media disclosure, and the person did not authorize the recording. The attached screenshots show the profile and upload date.”

When you are a bystander rather than the person being imitated
You can report a misleading post even when you are not the voice’s owner. Use the misinformation, manipulated-media, impersonation, fraud, or safety category that matches what you observed. Be explicit that you are reporting as a viewer and avoid claiming to be the person or an authorized representative.
Privacy-removal procedures may require the identifiable person or a legal representative to participate. If you know the person, send them the preserved URL and evidence through a trusted private channel rather than tagging them publicly and increasing the video’s reach.
When to escalate beyond the platform
Platform reporting is not an emergency response and cannot replace professional help when someone is in immediate danger. Preserve the evidence and contact the appropriate authority when the synthetic voice is used for:
- Extortion, blackmail, stalking, credible threats, or instructions to send money.
- Identity theft, account takeover, financial fraud, or a fake customer-support or executive call.
- Election-related deception, fabricated candidate statements, or coordinated attempts to suppress voting.
- Targeted harassment involving minors, intimate material, or publication of private information.
Tell the authority that the material may be synthetic, provide the original files and URLs, and explain how you verified the real person’s identity. Do not alter metadata or delete messages that may establish who created or distributed the material.

Reporting only the account
An account report may not identify every harmful post. Submit a post-level report for each significant video and an account-level report when the profile itself impersonates someone.

Reporting only “fake” without explaining the deception
State who is being imitated, what viewers are being led to believe, where the voice appears, and whether the uploader disclosed the manipulation. A clear description helps a reviewer apply the correct policy.
Deleting your evidence after submission
Keep the original files, timestamps, confirmation screens, and any follow-up messages until the matter is resolved and any legal or safety need has passed.
Sending identity documents to the wrong person
Use only the platform’s official, authenticated form. Never send identification to the uploader or to an account claiming it can speed up removal.
Assuming a report guarantees removal
Platforms weigh identifiability, realism, disclosure, consent, parody or satire, public interest, and public-figure context. A refusal does not prove the audio is authentic, and a removal does not by itself establish legal liability. If the harm is serious, retain your evidence and pursue the appropriate external escalation.
