If an AI-generated video, image or audio clip impersonates you in India, report it through two channels immediately: the platform hosting it, and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in. Identify the exact post or account, explain that it uses your identity or likeness and is artificially generated or morphed, request removal, and preserve evidence of your complaint. If the platform’s Grievance Officer gives an unsatisfactory decision, you can appeal online to the Grievance Appellate Committee at gac.gov.in.
For a qualifying complaint about electronic impersonation or artificially morphed images, the reproduced IT Rules provision says the intermediary must take all reasonable and practicable measures to remove or disable access within 24 hours. That deadline is scoped to the specified category; it is not a guarantee that every deepfake complaint will be resolved or that an investigation will produce a particular result.
What to do first
- Capture the location and identity of the content. Copy the full post, video, profile or account URL. Record the username, display name, date and time, and any post or case number.
- Preserve evidence safely. Save screenshots or a lawful copy of the material, including the page showing the account and URL. Do not forward intimate material unnecessarily or publish it again.
- Report it on the hosting service. Use the in-app reporting tool and the service’s published Grievance Officer or grievance mechanism. State that the content impersonates you and is AI-generated, synthetically generated or artificially morphed.
- File a separate cybercrime report. Submit the incident at cybercrime.gov.in, which Government material identifies as accepting reports involving deepfakes and social-media URLs.
- Escalate if necessary. If you are dissatisfied with the platform Grievance Officer’s decision, use the online appeal route at gac.gov.in.
These routes serve different purposes. A platform complaint seeks removal from the service. A cybercrime report documents the incident for government and law-enforcement channels. A Grievance Appellate Committee appeal challenges the platform’s grievance decision. The official material does not state that one route must be completed before another, so you can use them in parallel.
What counts as a deepfake complaint under the cited rule
Do not rely on the word “deepfake” alone. Describe the conduct and its effect. Explain that the material uses your face, voice, name, body or other identifying features and presents you as appearing or speaking when you did not create or authorize it. Say whether it is a video, image, audio recording, profile, advertisement or other electronic material.

The Grievance Appellate Committee’s official Rights of Users page reproduces Rule 3(2)(b) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules. It covers complaints by an individual, or by someone on that individual’s behalf, about material that is prima facie:
- electronic impersonation, including artificially morphed images of the individual;
- material exposing the individual’s private area;
- material showing the individual in full or partial nudity; or
- material showing or depicting the individual in a sexual act or conduct.
If the content is intimate or sexual, say so explicitly in the report. That factual description matters because the rule expressly lists those categories as well as electronic impersonation.
“The intermediary shall, within twenty-four hours from the receipt of a complaint made by an individual or any person on his behalf under this sub-rule, in relation to any content which is prima facie in the nature of any material which exposes the private area of such individual, shows such individual in full or partial nudity or shows or depicts such individual in any sexual act or conduct, or is in the nature of impersonation in an electronic form, including artificially morphed images of such individual, take all reasonable and practicable measures to remove or disable access to such content which is hosted, stored, published or transmitted by it.”

“Within 24 hours” describes the period for the intermediary’s reasonable and practicable removal or access-disabling measures after a qualifying complaint. It does not promise that a platform will agree with every report, identify the creator, preserve evidence indefinitely, or complete an investigation within that period.
Route 1: report the content to the platform
Find both reporting channels
Start with the report button beside the specific post, video, image, audio clip, profile or message. Then look for the service’s current “Help,” “Safety,” “Legal,” “Grievance,” “Terms,” or “Contact Grievance Officer” page. Platform labels and contact details change, so use the affected service’s currently published mechanism rather than an old address copied from another guide.

Reporting only a profile may leave the individual post online. Where possible, report each URL that contains the material and identify the account distributing it. If the same file appears on several services, submit a separate report to each host.

Use precise facts rather than a bare accusation. Include:
- your name and a reliable contact address;
- the exact URLs, account names and post identifiers;
- what part of the material depicts or imitates you;
- that you did not create, authorize or consent to the material;
- that it is AI-generated, synthetically generated or artificially morphed, if that is what you know;
- whether it contains nudity, a sexual act, private-area exposure, threats, fraud or other unlawful conduct;
- the harm or risk, such as impersonation, harassment, extortion, reputational damage or people being misled; and
- the action requested: remove the content, disable access, restrict re-uploads where the service can do so, and confirm the case number.
You do not need to prove which software made the fake. If you cannot verify the production method, describe observable facts: “This video depicts my face and voice, but I did not make or authorize it; the movements and audio appear artificially generated.” Avoid overstating technical certainty.
Copy-and-adapt report wording
Subject: Request to remove AI-generated impersonation of me“I am the person depicted in the content at [URL]. I did not create, authorize or consent to this material. It uses my identity or likeness and is presented as me. It is AI-generated or artificially morphed. [State clearly if it shows nudity, a sexual act or private-area exposure.] Please remove or disable access to the content under the applicable intermediary rules and confirm the complaint number and action taken. The account and post details are: [username, account URL, post URL].”
Keep the wording factual and professional. Do not threaten the platform or contact the uploader in a way that could alert them to destroy evidence or escalate harassment.

Record the submission
Save a screenshot or PDF of the completed form, the confirmation page, the email acknowledgment, and any ticket number. Note the date and time in India’s local time zone. If a form limits attachments, submit the most useful evidence first and explain that additional files are available. Keep the original files unchanged so their metadata and integrity are easier to establish later.

Understanding the response periods
The official Rights of Users page describes several different grievance periods. They should not be collapsed into one universal “deepfake deadline.”

The 24-hour wording is “all reasonable and practicable measures.” The cited official material does not guarantee a particular takedown decision, a finding that the material is unlawful, or a response from a named officer. If the platform asks for clarification, answer promptly while preserving the original complaint and its timestamp.
Route 2: file a report with India’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal
Use the Government of India’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in. Government sources specifically describe the portal as accepting deepfake and social-media-URL reports. A portal submission is separate from a platform takedown request: it records the incident for government and law-enforcement channels and does not itself remove the hosted post.
Prepare the information before opening the portal
- Your identification and contact details requested by the portal.
- The platform name, profile or account URL, post URL and any shortened or redirected links.
- A concise chronology: when you found the material, where it appeared and what happened after you reported it.
- How the material uses your identity and why it is false or unauthorized.
- Whether the content involves sexual imagery, threats, extortion, financial fraud, stalking, child exploitation or another immediate safety concern.
- Copies of screenshots, downloaded files where lawful, platform tickets and relevant messages.
Choose the correct reporting path
Follow the portal’s current on-screen categories and instructions. Use the category that most closely describes the incident rather than choosing a generic option solely because the file is AI-generated. Include “AI-generated deepfake,” “artificially morphed image,” or “electronic impersonation” in the narrative so the nature of the complaint is clear.
The official portal FAQ says a complaint filed through its “Report and Track” or “Report Other Cybercrime” option receives a complaint reference by SMS and email. Keep that reference with your platform ticket and do not assume that a portal submission is anonymous. Government material identifies an anonymous option for certain women- and child-related crime reports; that does not mean every report type can be filed anonymously.
After submission
Save the reference number, confirmation email and submitted narrative. If the material is still online, update the platform ticket with the cybercrime reference only if the service requests it or if it helps establish urgency. Do not repeatedly submit identical portal complaints merely to create duplicates; add new URLs or new harm in a follow-up through the available process.

Route 3: appeal a platform decision to the GAC
If the intermediary’s Grievance Officer rejects your complaint, does not provide a satisfactory decision, or otherwise leaves the grievance unresolved, the Government’s published route is an online appeal to the Grievance Appellate Committee at gac.gov.in.

- The original platform complaint and its submission date.
- The platform’s acknowledgment, decision, ticket number or evidence that no satisfactory decision arrived.
- The exact URLs and screenshots showing the impersonation.
- A short explanation of why the material is electronic impersonation or artificially morphed content and, where applicable, intimate content.
- The remedy you want, such as removal or disabling access.
Keep the appeal focused on the platform grievance decision. The GAC route is not a substitute for the cybercrime report, and the official descriptions do not say that filing a GAC appeal guarantees removal or a criminal investigation.
Use the three routes together without confusing their roles

Evidence and privacy checklist
Preserve enough to prove what happened
- Capture the full browser address bar, account name, post date and visible content.
- Record the first time you saw the material and every report date.
- Keep original files separate from edited or annotated copies.
- Save emails, direct messages, payment demands, threats and platform responses.
- Use a simple log with columns for URL, account, date found, report channel, ticket number and result.
Limit further distribution
Do not repost the deepfake to warn others unless there is a compelling safety reason and you can avoid exposing intimate material. Share the minimum necessary with the platform, portal, law-enforcement officer or a qualified lawyer. Blur unrelated people’s personal information in copies where it is not needed, but retain an unaltered original securely.
Protect yourself during a live threat
If the fake is being used for extortion, stalking, threats of violence, financial fraud or immediate personal danger, state that clearly in both reports and contact local emergency or law-enforcement services where appropriate. Do not pay an extortionist or promise secrecy in exchange for deletion; preserve the demand and account details instead.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Reporting only “misinformation”
A generic misinformation label can obscure the personal-impersonation issue. Correct it by identifying yourself as the person depicted and explaining that the material is unauthorized electronic impersonation or an artificially morphed image.

Sending a vague link
A profile URL may contain hundreds of posts. Submit the direct post, video or image URL and identify every known copy.

Waiting for one channel to act
Platform moderation and a cybercrime report have different purposes. File the platform request and the portal report promptly rather than waiting for one to finish before starting the other.
Assuming every complaint has a 24-hour deadline
The reproduced rule is specific to qualifying impersonation, artificially morphed images and listed intimate-content complaints. Other grievance categories have different periods, including 72 hours for specified Rule 3(1)(b) complaints and a generally 15-day resolution period.
Assuming anonymity
The portal FAQ and Government material describe an anonymous option for certain women- and child-related reports. Do not assume that an ordinary adult impersonation report is anonymous; read the portal’s current instructions before submitting.

Deleting the evidence after reporting
Removing your own copies can make escalation harder. Keep a secure evidence folder and the complaint timeline even if the platform removes the post.
What changed in 2026
A Government press release dated 5 August 2026 states that the IT Rules were amended on 10 February 2026 to address synthetically generated information, including deepfakes, and describes platform obligations concerning unlawful AI-generated content. The operative rule text controls the legal details. For the specific 24-hour impersonation and intimate-content measure, use the wording reproduced on the GAC Rights of Users page rather than assuming that every new AI-related obligation has the same scope or deadline.
Platform interfaces, grievance contacts and portal categories can change. Check the affected service’s current published grievance channel and the live instructions at cybercrime.gov.in and gac.gov.in when you file.
When professional help may be warranted
Consider speaking with a lawyer or victim-support professional if the deepfake is intimate, involves a minor, is tied to extortion or financial loss, has spread across many services, or remains online after platform and government reports. Bring your evidence log, URLs, ticket numbers and portal reference. A professional can help preserve evidence, send a formal notice or advise on additional civil or criminal remedies, but no service provider can guarantee that a platform will remove content or that authorities will make a particular finding.
