Report the specific false civic claim, not merely the fact that a video or image was made with AI. First save the post URL, account details, time, screenshots and the exact wording or imagery. Then use the platform’s own report control and select the category that best matches the harm—such as false information, voter interference, impersonation, manipulated media or a civic-integrity violation. Reporting can trigger review, but it does not guarantee removal, account suspension or a reply.
What to do before reporting
Fast-moving political posts can be edited, deleted or reposted. Preserve enough information for a reviewer to understand what appeared on screen without unnecessarily downloading or redistributing the material.
- Copy the direct URL to the post, video, Short or account.
- Record the account handle and display name. These can differ, and impersonators often use names or profile pictures associated with real candidates, election offices or news organizations.
- Note the date and time, including your time zone when a deadline or election event matters.
- Take screenshots or a short screen recording showing the post, caption, comments that add context, labels and any call to action. Avoid reposting the material just to document it.
- Transcribe the exact false statement or describe the manipulated image, voice or scene. A reviewer needs the claim itself, not just a conclusion that it is a “deepfake.”
- Save relevant context, such as an official election notice, candidate statement or authoritative result that contradicts the post. Do not include personal information that is irrelevant to the report.
If the content threatens imminent violence or exposes someone’s private information, use the platform’s emergency or safety reporting route when one is offered and contact local emergency services if there is an immediate danger.

AI generation is a production method. It is not, by itself, proof that a political statement is false. A synthetic video could be labeled and still accurately quote a speech; conversely, a conventional video can contain election misinformation. Your report should identify the concrete assertion and why it is wrong or dangerous.

- Quote or describe the claim. For example: “The caption says polling places are closed nationwide on Tuesday,” or “The clip falsely shows a candidate conceding.”
- State what is correct. Give the verified voting date, location, eligibility rule or original source, and explain the discrepancy.
- Describe the likely civic consequence. Explain whether the post could prevent someone from voting, misrepresent a candidate’s eligibility, encourage violence, disrupt a peaceful transfer of power or endanger a person through impersonation.
- Identify the manipulation when relevant. Mention cloned voices, face replacement, altered subtitles, fabricated documents or a stitched-together speech, but keep the false claim as the central issue.
- Attach or reference evidence if the form permits it. A concise timeline and a reliable source are more useful than a long argument or multiple duplicate reports.
Do not mass-report content or choose an inaccurate category. Repeated reports do not substitute for a clear description and can make it harder to distinguish the actual violation.

How to report on Facebook
Report a post or video
- Open the post or video containing the false political claim.
- Open its post menu and choose Report.
- Select the option that describes the harm, such as false information, voter interference, electoral violence or inaccurate information about when, where or how to vote.
- In the explanation field, identify the exact claim, give the correct context and explain the potential effect on voting or safety. Mention synthetic manipulation only as supporting information.
- Submit the report and retain your evidence and URL.
Report impersonation
Use the account menu when a profile pretends to be a candidate, election office, journalist or another identifiable person. Include the display name, handle, profile URL and the specific posts that create the deception. An account can be impersonating someone even when an individual post does not contain an obvious AI artifact.

Understand Meta’s labeling approach
Meta says it keeps many manipulated or AI-generated posts online with labels and additional context while separately enforcing rules against voter interference, electoral violence and inaccurate voting information. Its 2024 statement said, “We agree with the Oversight Board’s recommendation that providing transparency and additional context is now the better way to address manipulated media.” Therefore, report the false civic claim rather than asking for removal solely because a tool generated the media.

Meta reported that AI-related election, politics and social-topic content represented less than 1% of all fact-checked misinformation during the major 2024 elections it reviewed. That figure is context for those elections and must not be treated as a rate for every country, platform or election.

How to report on YouTube
Report a regular video
- Sign in and open the video.
- Select More → Report.
- Choose the reason closest to the violation, such as misleading election information, a false candidate-eligibility claim or another applicable policy category.
- Provide timestamps and a short explanation when requested. Identify the exact words, visuals or link that are false and give the correct information.
- Submit the report.
Report a Short
Open the Short’s options menu and choose the reporting control. If YouTube asks for details, provide timestamps or describe the point in the short clip where the false claim appears. Include the caption, on-screen text and linked destination if an external link is part of the deception.
Check the outcome
YouTube says reports are anonymous and reviewed against its guidelines. Open Reporting History to see available status information. A report sends content for evaluation; it is not an automatic takedown request. YouTube’s help guidance states: “When content is reported, it’s not automatically taken down.”

How to report on TikTok
Use the video report menu
- Open the video and tap the sharing or options menu.
- Choose Report.
- Select the closest reason. Depending on what the video shows, this may be Edited Media and AI-Generated Content, impersonation, misinformation or a civic-integrity category.
- Describe the false election claim, the correct information and the possible effect on voting, public order or safety.
- Submit the report and keep the URL and screenshots.
Know what TikTok means by AIGC
TikTok’s Community Guidelines define AIGC as “content, including images, video, or audio, that is created or modified by artificial intelligence (AI) technology or machine-learning processes.” That definition covers both fully generated media and material changed by AI. Choose an AIGC or edited-media reason when the synthetic nature matters, but use misinformation or civic-integrity reporting when the central problem is a false voting instruction or other prohibited civic harm.

How to report on X
Report the post
- Open the post containing the political claim.
- Open the top menu and select Report post.
- Choose the reason that best matches the problem, especially misleading election-participation information or a false civic-process date or time.
- Complete the prompts with the claim, correction, evidence and potential civic harm.
- Submit the report.
What happens after you submit
X says the original post is replaced in the reporter’s view with a notice while the platform evaluates the report. The notice is not a finding that the account has been punished. X’s Help Center states: “Reporting a post or List does not automatically result in the account being suspended.” If the same account publishes several distinct violations, report each relevant post and explain the separate harm rather than filing duplicate reports for one item.
Choosing the right category
Menu names and available choices can vary by country, device and account state, especially during an election. Use the closest truthful category if the exact wording differs.

What reporting can and cannot do
- It can put content in a platform review queue and provide a record of a specific policy concern.
- It may lead to a label, reduced distribution, removal or account action when reviewers find a violation, but policies and enforcement differ by platform and region.
- It does not verify the truth automatically. Reviewers still need a precise claim and useful context.
- It does not guarantee removal. Meta may leave manipulated content up with context; YouTube says reports are not automatic takedown requests; X says a report does not automatically suspend an account.
- It does not replace election authorities. If a post gives wrong voting instructions, verify the correction with the relevant official election authority and share that correction through a trusted channel without amplifying the harmful material.
Practical reporting checklist
- Have I saved the direct URL, handle, display name and timestamp?
- Can I quote the exact false statement or identify the precise manipulated scene?
- Have I stated what is correct and named the jurisdiction or election involved?
- Did I explain the risk to voting, candidate safety, public order or peaceful transfer of power?
- Did I choose the closest accurate category instead of mass-reporting?
- Did I avoid downloading, reposting or linking to harmful material unnecessarily?
- Have I retained screenshots in case the post disappears before review?
If the report menu or result looks different
Platforms change labels and workflows by country, app version and account status. Update the app, try the post’s three-dot or sharing menu, and look for a general “Report” control if the named category in this guide is absent. Describe the harm in your own words when no specialized election option appears. If the platform offers a reporting-history page, save its status for your records; absence of a visible status does not prove that no review occurred.
Policies can also change quickly around elections. Recheck the platform’s current help or safety guidance before a major vote, and treat any on-screen label, notice or review result as platform action—not as an independent certification that every part of the political claim is true or false.
