Use Report while navigation is running, choose the incident that is happening now, and submit only when you can do so safely. Google Maps offers incident categories that vary by country and interface; Waze has separate flows for live crashes, closures, and permanent map errors. A passenger can submit while the driver concentrates on the road, or you can wait until you are stopped. Google’s safety instruction is unambiguous: “Only make a report if it’s safe to do so.”
This guide shows the current documented steps for Android, CarPlay, Android Auto, and Android Automotive, explains what other drivers see after a report, and helps you choose between a traffic alert and a map correction.
What counts as a traffic problem?
Report a traffic incident when a condition is affecting drivers right now: a crash, traffic jam, object in the road, flooding, a closure, or another listed hazard. These reports are time-sensitive and are intended to warn nearby drivers and, in some cases, change routing.
Use a map correction for an underlying data error that will remain after the incident is gone—for example, a wrong turn restriction, incorrect address, missing road, missing roundabout, or a route that does not match the physical road. Waze handles these corrections through its map-issue process rather than its ordinary incident button.

Do not report a problem from memory at a distant location. Waze instructs users to report only incidents seen in real time and as close to the actual incident as possible. If you are driving, have a passenger do it or pull over legally before touching the phone.
Report a traffic problem in Google Maps
Android phone while navigating
- Open Google Maps and start turn-by-turn navigation.
- Tap Report on the right side of the navigation screen.
- Select the incident category that matches what you see, such as Crash or Traffic jam.
- Confirm the submission if Maps asks you to do so, then return your attention to the road.
The Android navigation help lists crash and traffic jam as examples, but Google notes that some report types are available only in certain countries. The button location, category names, and categories shown on your phone can therefore differ from a screenshot or from another driver’s phone. CarPlay
When Google Maps is displayed through Apple CarPlay, start or resume navigation and use the on-screen Report control. Choose the applicable category and submit it. Google’s CarPlay documentation also describes reporting while navigating and, on supported screens, outside active navigation.

The CarPlay list includes categories such as construction, lane closure, object on road, flooded road, low visibility, and unplowed road, in addition to crash and traffic-related alerts. This is not a universal list: availability depends on the country, app version, and interface. Follow the labels actually presented by CarPlay rather than selecting a vaguely similar category. What happens after a Google Maps report?
Maps can place the report along the route so approaching drivers may receive an alert. When a driver nears a reported incident, Maps may ask whether it is still present. Selecting Yes or No helps Google decide whether the alert should continue. Prompts and alerts depend on settings, location, device, and the type of incident; a submission is not a promise that every nearby user will see it instantly.

If the hazard has cleared, answer that it is no longer there when Maps asks. Leaving an obsolete alert unconfirmed can make the map less useful to the people who encounter the location later.
Report an accident or hazard in Waze
Crash report on a phone
- Open Waze while you are at or immediately beside the incident.
- Tap Report.
- Tap Crash.
- Choose a more specific option if it applies, such as Pile-up or Other side.
- Tap Report, or allow Waze to send the report automatically after the short countdown.
Waze says to report only incidents you see in real time and as close to the actual location as possible. Its detailed crash-reporting help includes separate directions for the phone app, Android Auto, Android Automotive, and CarPlay. The exact controls can vary by vehicle display, so use the category and confirmation shown on your connected screen.

Avoid including personal details in any optional description, and do not attempt to photograph or investigate a crash while driving. Emergency services remain the right channel for injuries or immediate danger; a community alert is not a substitute for calling them.
Road closure report
- Tap Report in Waze.
- Expand the report menu if Closure is not visible.
- Select Closure.
- Tap Report to send it.
A closure is treated differently from an ordinary hazard. Waze says your report immediately affects your own route so the app can avoid the closed road. The closure appears on the map after more Wazers report it, and it is removed when Wazers begin driving there again. This community confirmation means one report can change your route immediately without making the closure permanent for everyone.
Waze documents closure reporting on supported mobile and in-car interfaces, but says Android Automotive does not currently support the Closure report. If your vehicle screen lacks that option, do not substitute an unrelated category; use a supported phone or interface when safely stopped. For a closure scheduled in advance, Waze directs users to its listed closures email or a local Waze community forum rather than the live incident button. Mark an inaccurate Waze report
If you pass a Waze alert and the incident is not there, open the alert and select Not there when that control is offered. Waze says this decreases how long the inaccurate report remains displayed. Use this for a report that has cleared or was incorrect; do not use it to dispute a hazard you can still see.

Submitting a map issue because traffic is slow will not create a useful live alert. Conversely, reporting a permanent missing road as a crash leaves the map data wrong after the temporary alert disappears.
How to report a map error in Waze
During a drive on Android
- Tap Report.
- Choose Map issue, then Map Issue if Waze presents a second-level menu.
- Select the problem type that matches the map discrepancy.
- Add concise details that identify what is wrong and, when relevant, what the correct road behavior should be.
- Send the report.
Only submit while it is safe. If the correction requires a long explanation, wait until you are parked and use the after-drive path instead.
After the drive
- Open Waze’s Menu.
- Go to Help and feedback.
- Select Report an issue, then Report a map issue.
- Provide the address or location, choose the issue type, and describe the discrepancy.
- Submit the report.
Waze also documents map-issue submissions through Live Map and local Waze community forums. Volunteer editors may follow up, and an edit can require review before it appears in the map. The supported issue types and channels are described in Waze’s map-issue help.
Google Maps and Waze: practical differences
Both apps rely on community observations, but the reporting models are not identical. Use these distinctions when deciding which app’s workflow fits your situation.

Neither app guarantees that every report is accepted, shown to every driver, or retained for a fixed period. Location, settings, interface, country, and later community feedback all affect what other users see.
Safety and privacy checks before you submit
- Do not use the phone while driving. Google’s instruction is “Only make a report if it’s safe to do so.” A passenger should submit, or you should stop in a legal, safe place.
- Report what you can verify. Waze’s guidance is to report incidents seen in real time and close to the actual incident. Do not repeat a social-media claim or an event you passed long ago.
- Pick the closest category. A crash, a closure, and a permanent map error have different effects. Choosing the wrong one can mislead other drivers or leave routing data incorrect.
- Keep descriptions factual. State the observable condition and location; omit names, license plates, medical information, and other personal details.
- Correct stale information. Respond to Google’s still-there prompt, or use Waze’s Not there control when available.
- Expect interface differences. A button documented for a phone may not appear on a vehicle display, and country-specific categories may be hidden.
Troubleshooting when the report option is missing
There is no Report button
Make sure navigation is active where the app requires it, verify that the current app and vehicle connection are functioning, and look for an expanded or overflow menu. CarPlay and Android Auto can place controls in a different panel from the phone app. If you are moving and cannot locate the control immediately, wait until you can stop safely.
The category you need is not listed
Categories are not universal. Google explicitly limits some incident types by country, and Waze’s available controls depend on the interface. Do not force a construction, closure, or crash into an unrelated category merely to make a submission. Use the closest accurate option only when the app presents one, otherwise report through a supported interface or wait until the condition can be described as a map issue.
A closure will not submit
Check whether you are using Android Automotive; Waze says Closure reporting is not currently supported there. On supported interfaces, expand the Report menu and select Closure before sending. A planned future closure belongs in Waze’s specified closures email or local community forum, not a live closure report.

A map correction has not appeared
Map issues can require volunteer-editor review, so they are not equivalent to an immediate traffic alert. Recheck the location and description, avoid duplicate submissions, and use Waze’s Live Map or community forum route if the documented phone path does not cover your case.
