If a pharmaceutical advertisement appears misleading in Google Search, use the ad’s own More or Info menu and choose Report ad. In the United States, you can also send concerns about potentially false or misleading prescription-drug promotion to the FDA’s Office of Prescription Drug Promotion (OPDP) through its Bad Ad Program. These are separate reviews: a report flags a concern, but it does not establish that the advertiser broke a Google policy or the law.
Choose the reporting route before you start
The right recipient depends on what you want reviewed and what the product is. Google handles whether an advertisement complies with its advertising policies on Google services. FDA’s OPDP handles suspected false or misleading promotion of prescription drugs in the United States. You may use both routes for the same advertisement.

A general Google Search feedback form is different from ad reporting. Feedback about rankings, missing features, or how Search works does not substitute for the ad-specific Report ad flow.

How to report the ad directly in Google Search
Google’s interface can vary by device, account status, country, and test version, but the ad-specific control is labeled Report ad. Report the individual sponsored result rather than sending general Search feedback.
Desktop browser procedure
- Run the search that displayed the pharmaceutical advertisement. If possible, return to the same results page so the ad and its wording are visible.
- Locate the sponsored result. Look for the small Ad or Sponsored label and confirm that you are acting on the advertisement, not an organic result.
- Open the ad’s More menu or Info control. The control is commonly represented by three dots or an information icon near the ad.
- Select Report ad.
- If Google displays several ads or asks which one concerns you, select the specific pharmaceutical ad. Do not report a different advertiser by mistake.
- Choose the reason that most closely describes your concern, complete the form, and add the requested details. Leave Google’s prefilled fields unchanged; Google specifically advises not editing them.
- Submit the report. If you are not signed in, Google may ask for an email address so it can process the report.
When the ad appears on a partner site or app
An advertisement delivered through a Google partner site or app may show an AdChoices control instead of the exact Search layout. Select Why this ad?, choose the ad you want to flag, and then select Report ad. Capture the ad’s wording and destination before leaving the page because a refresh can replace it.

Reporting is not the same as blocking
Google states that reporting an ad does not block that ad. If you also want to reduce the chance of seeing it, use Google’s separate ad-blocking or ad-preference feature when it is available. Blocking changes what you see; it is not a substitute for submitting a policy report.
If the Report ad control is missing
- Check that the item is actually labeled as an ad or sponsored result. A normal Search result has no ad-reporting menu.
- Open the ad’s More or Info control rather than the browser’s page menu.
- Try the same search in another supported browser or the Google app, since labels can differ between interfaces.
- Use the AdChoices path if the promotion is on a partner site or app.
- Save a screenshot and the destination address, then report the issue when the control reappears. A missing button should not lead you to submit ordinary Search feedback as though it were an ad complaint.
How to report a potentially misleading prescription ad to the FDA
For a prescription drug advertisement aimed at a U.S. audience, the FDA’s Office of Prescription Drug Promotion operates the Bad Ad Program. Anyone may submit a concern, including consumers who saw a direct-to-consumer promotion. FDA describes the program as having a particular outreach focus on healthcare professionals, but a consumer does not need to be a clinician to report.
Submit by email
Send the concern to BadAd@fda.gov. Put the product name and a short description of the concern in the subject line so the submission can be routed clearly. Include the evidence and your contact details, if you are willing to provide them.
Submit by phone
Call 855-RX-BADAD (855-792-2323). Be ready to identify the product, explain the exact statement or omission that concerns you, and describe where and when you saw the promotion.
Information that makes an FDA report useful
- Product name: Include the brand and, if shown, the active ingredient or dosage.
- Reason for concern: Quote the wording that appears inaccurate, unsupported, or incomplete. If the concern is an omission, describe the risk or limitation that is missing.
- Promotion link or image: Preserve the ad’s destination URL and attach a screenshot or other image when practical.
- Where and when you saw it: Note that it appeared in Google Search, the search terms if relevant, your country, and the date and approximate time.
- Contact information: Provide an email address or phone number only if you are comfortable being contacted for clarification.
- Other relevant details: Explain whether the ad appeared to target consumers or healthcare professionals and identify any claims about approval, effectiveness, safety, or comparative performance.
FDA accepts anonymous reports. Supplying contact information can help if staff need clarification, but it is optional. Describe observable facts rather than declaring that the advertiser committed a crime or violated a particular statute; the agency makes that determination.

What kinds of pharmaceutical claims may warrant a report?
A report is appropriate when a specific feature of the promotion raises a credible concern. It is not necessary to prove a violation before reporting, and an unusual-looking ad is not automatically unlawful or prohibited.

Risk information is missing or minimized
Prescription-drug promotion can raise concerns when serious risks are omitted, displayed so briefly that they are effectively hidden, or presented in a way that downplays their importance. Explain what risk information is absent or minimized and where the ad places the benefit claim.
Benefits are overstated
Flag absolute or sweeping promises that appear to go beyond the evidence presented, such as implying that a medicine works for everyone, guarantees a result, or eliminates a condition without meaningful qualifications.
Benefits and risks are not balanced
FDA identifies fair balance between benefit and risk information as a central issue in prescription promotion. A short benefit statement paired with a difficult-to-read, incomplete, or disconnected risk disclosure can be described precisely in the report.
Material facts or limitations are omitted
Important facts may include who was studied, the approved use, major restrictions, duration of treatment, or circumstances in which the product should not be used. State which fact appears to be missing and why it matters to a person deciding whether to ask about the medicine.

Study data are unsupported or misrepresented
Describe claims that cite a study without identifying relevant limitations, present a surrogate outcome as though it were a guaranteed patient outcome, or use a study population that does not match the people addressed by the ad. Do not infer that a study is fraudulent; report the mismatch or missing context you can observe.
Comparisons are misleading
Comparative wording can be concerning when the ad does not identify the comparator, uses different measures for each product, or implies superiority that the cited information does not establish. Quote the comparison and identify the missing basis.
An investigational product is presented as proven
FDA lists concerns about presenting an investigational drug as safe and effective when it has not been established for that use. If the ad appears to blur the distinction between research and an approved indication, include the exact language and the product’s status as shown or known from the promotion.
Build evidence before submitting
Ads can change, disappear, or be personalized. A short evidence package helps either recipient understand exactly what you saw without requiring you to make a legal conclusion.

Preserve the ad itself
- Take a full-page screenshot that includes the ad label, headline, visible claims, risk text, advertiser name, and date or device context when possible.
- Save a close-up image of small-print disclosures if they are legible only when enlarged.
- Copy the landing-page address exactly as displayed. If the destination redirects, preserve both the ad’s visible URL and the final page address.
- Record the search query, country, device, and approximate time. These details can explain why another person cannot reproduce the same impression.
Describe facts in a neutral format
A useful description separates observation from interpretation: “The headline says X; the page claims Y; the ad does not show Z; the risk link opens only after another click.” Then explain why that combination concerns you. Avoid exaggeration, insults, or claims that you cannot substantiate.

Protect personal and medical information
Remove prescription numbers, medical records, account credentials, and unrelated personal data from screenshots. Do not send another person’s health information unless it is necessary and you have permission. Keep the original files privately in case you need to clarify the report.
Which agency handles products other than prescription drugs?
OPDP’s Bad Ad Program is specifically for prescription-drug promotion made by or for a drug manufacturer, packer, or distributor, including internet promotion. It is not a universal complaint channel for every health-related advertisement.
- Over-the-counter medicines: Check FDA’s current contact table for the office responsible for non-prescription drug matters.
- Dietary supplements: Use the contact identified for supplements rather than assuming prescription-drug rules apply.
- Medical devices: Follow the FDA route for device advertising and promotion.
- Food and cosmetics: Use the FDA office responsible for those products.
- Animal drugs: Choose the animal-drug contact listed by FDA.
- Compounded drugs and other specialized categories: Check the current FDA table for the appropriate office.
Federal Trade Commission guidance can also be relevant to deceptive claims for some health products, including certain over-the-counter medicines and supplements. That guidance does not replace Google’s ad-reporting flow or FDA’s prescription-promotion route. You can report the ad to Google while using the agency that has jurisdiction over the product category.
Google policy concerns and FDA concerns are not identical
Google’s health and medicines policies impose product- and location-specific limits on some prescription-drug services and advertisements. An ad may be restricted because of certification, targeting, or product rules even when its wording does not look obviously false. Conversely, an ad can appear unusual without violating a Google policy. Treat policy details as context, not as proof that the advertiser broke a rule.
FDA’s review asks a different question: whether prescription-drug promotion may be false or misleading under the standards that apply in the United States. The same screenshot can therefore support two distinct reports—one about the ad’s presence or policy compliance on Google and one about the promotion’s content.

What happens after you report?
Google says it reviews ad reports, but it does not promise that an ad will be removed, changed, or blocked. A report may be combined with other signals, and you may not receive a detailed explanation of the outcome. If the ad remains visible, that does not prove the report was ignored or that the claims are accurate.
FDA
FDA uses Bad Ad submissions to inform review and surveillance. The agency does not promise an enforcement action, a response to every reporter, or disclosure of an ongoing investigation. Do not treat the absence of a public response as a finding that the promotion is acceptable.
If the ad is urgent or dangerous
If an advertisement appears connected to an immediate safety risk, do not wait for an agency review before seeking medical advice. Contact a licensed clinician or pharmacist about treatment decisions. For suspected adverse events, use the FDA’s established adverse-event reporting process in addition to reporting the promotional claim; an ad complaint is not a substitute for reporting a reaction.
Common reporting mistakes
- Using Search feedback: General feedback about Search does not route the complaint to the ad-review flow.
- Reporting the wrong result: When several sponsored results appear, verify the advertiser and select the exact ad containing the claim.
- Submitting only “this is a scam”: Include the product, quotation, omission, link, and screenshot so the recipient can assess a concrete issue.
- Editing prefilled Google fields: Google advises leaving those fields unchanged.
- Assuming a report blocks the ad: Use the separate blocking control if your goal is only to stop seeing it.
- Sending every health product to OPDP: Confirm that the product is a prescription drug and that the matter is U.S.-specific before using the Bad Ad route.
- Presenting a conclusion as evidence: Agencies need the observable claim and context; they decide whether it is misleading or unlawful.
- Failing to preserve a disappearing ad: Save the link and screenshots before refreshing, clicking through, or closing the page.
A practical reporting checklist
- Confirm that the item is a sponsored advertisement, not an organic Search result.
- Capture the ad, landing page, advertiser, claim, disclosure, and destination address.
- Write down the exact statement or omission that concerns you.
- Use Google’s More or Info menu and choose Report ad; use AdChoices on a partner site or app.
- If the product is a prescription drug promoted in the United States, send the same evidence to BadAd@fda.gov or call 855-RX-BADAD (855-792-2323).
- For a non-prescription medicine, supplement, device, food, cosmetic, animal drug, or compounded product, use the current FDA contact route for that category.
- Keep your submission factual, protect private medical information, and do not expect a guaranteed removal or agency response.
Why reporting matters
FDA reported more than 2,400 reports of potentially false or misleading prescription-drug promotion as of October 2022. That is a cumulative program figure at that date, not a current annual total. FDA also reported that prescription-drug promotion spending in 2021 exceeded $23 billion, including more than $17 billion directed to healthcare professionals; those figures were attributed to AnswerSuite, Promotional Answers, and Kantar Media in FDA’s 2023 materials. The scale of promotion makes specific, well-documented reports more useful than broad accusations.
The strongest submission is simple: identify the exact ad, preserve what it said, explain the missing or misleading context, and send it to every recipient with relevant jurisdiction. Reporting raises a concern for review; it does not decide the case.
