How do I report a misleading Google sponsored search result? Open the ad’s reporting control or menu, choose Report ad, select the closest reason, and submit the requested details. What a “sponsored” result means
A sponsored result is a paid placement on a Google Search results page. The word “sponsored” identifies how the placement was delivered; it does not by itself prove that the advertiser broke a law or a Google policy. Your complaint should identify what was misleading: an inaccurate claim, an omitted material fact, impersonation, a suspicious destination, or another problem with the ad or the page it opened.
Google’s reporting process is for concerns about the ad. A separate legal complaint may be appropriate when the issue involves copyright, trademark, counterfeit goods, or another legal violation. Suspected fraud is a further escalation, especially when an ad impersonates a business or directs you toward an unexpected payment intermediary.
Relevance is not the same as truthfulness. An ad can be a poor match for your search without being deceptive, while a highly relevant ad can still make a materially misleading claim. Describe the specific conduct rather than assuming that every unwanted sponsored result is unlawful.
Before you report: preserve the ad’s context
Google needs enough information to locate the placement and understand why it is problematic. Capture the details while the result is still visible. This is practical preparation, not a statement that every item is mandatory on Google’s form.
- The exact search query you entered.
- The date and approximate time you saw the result.
- The advertiser name shown in the sponsored placement.
- The exact wording of the claim, including qualifications, prices, guarantees, or urgency language.
- The displayed URL and, if you already visited it safely, the destination URL after the click.
- A screenshot showing the ad and enough of the results page to establish the context.
Preserve the wording exactly rather than paraphrasing it. A claim that looks misleading when isolated may be qualified elsewhere in the ad, while an omitted qualification can be important evidence. Note whether the landing page changed the price, service, business identity, eligibility conditions, or payment method. If you did not click, say so; do not imply that you inspected a destination you never opened.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) evaluates advertising in context, including whether a representation or omission is likely to mislead a reasonable consumer and whether it is material to the consumer’s decision. That makes the surrounding query, visible qualifications, and landing-page context useful when explaining the complaint.

Do not keep clicking an ad to recreate it. One visit can be enough to record the destination, and repeated clicks may expose you to additional risk or alter what you see.
Compare the available reporting routes
Google lists several complementary ways to submit a report. The best choice depends on whether the ad is still visible and whether you can identify the advertiser.

Using more than one Google route is not described by Google as a way to change the review result. Select the route that gives the clearest record, and use the FTC route separately when the facts suggest consumer fraud.
Report the ad directly from Google Search
Use this route when the sponsored result is still on the page.

- Confirm the platform. Make sure you are looking at a Google Search results page. Google-served ads can also appear on other sites and in apps, but the reporting controls and process may differ there.
- Open the ad’s reporting control. Use the reporting control or menu attached to the sponsored result. Its position and visual label can change as Google updates Search.
- Choose Report ad. This starts Google’s ad-reporting flow rather than a general complaint about the search page.
- Select the closest reason. Choose the category that best describes the problem. If none is a perfect match, select the nearest category and explain the difference in the details field.
- Enter the requested information. Describe the exact claim or destination problem and include the identifying details you recorded. Keep the explanation factual: state what the ad said, what happened after the click, and why the difference matters.
- Submit the report. Save the confirmation message or email if you need a record of the submission.
Google’s published instruction says: “Once submitted, you will receive an email confirmation. Google will then review your report and, if necessary, take appropriate action on the ad.” That statement confirms receipt and review, but it does not promise that Google will remove the ad, open an individual investigation, or provide a detailed outcome.
The interface can change, so do not rely on a particular icon, screen position, or label other than the reporting function itself. If you cannot find the control at the current page width, use one of Google’s alternate routes rather than assuming the ad cannot be reported.
If the sponsored result is no longer visible
An ad may disappear because the campaign ended, the targeting changed, or the search no longer matches it. You still have several Google routes.
Your recent ads in My Ad Center
Open My Ad Center and look for Your recent ads. If the placement is listed, use its reporting option and provide the same query, wording, advertiser, and destination details. This route is useful when you saw the ad recently but cannot reproduce the original search. Treat the listing as a way to identify the placement, not as proof that the advertiser violated a rule.

Ads Transparency Center
Search the Ads Transparency Center by advertiser or website. When you locate the placement, choose Report this ad and complete the form. Searching by the advertiser name can help when the ad no longer appears for your query but the advertiser is identifiable. If several results appear, compare the website and visible wording with your saved screenshot so you report the correct placement.
Google’s Report an ad form
Use Google’s Report an ad form when you cannot access the placement through Search, My Ad Center, or the Ads Transparency Center. Include every identifying detail you saved, especially the advertiser, displayed URL, destination URL, exact wording, and time of exposure. Google lists this form as an alternative reporting route and says it sends an email confirmation after submission. Mark estimates as estimates rather than presenting an approximate time or partially remembered URL as exact.
Choose the right type of complaint
Google’s form distinguishes between an allegation that an ad violates Google policies and a request connected to a legal violation. Selecting the correct route helps you describe the issue precisely.

Do not describe an ad as illegal solely because it is irrelevant, exaggerated, or poorly targeted. “Misleading” and “illegal” are not interchangeable conclusions. Under the FTC’s consumer-protection framework, the analysis considers the whole context and asks whether a representation or omission is likely to mislead a reasonable consumer and is material.

If you are uncertain which category applies, explain the facts without forcing a legal label. You can state that the ad appeared to impersonate a company, omitted a condition, or redirected you to a different payment page, then let the reviewing authority classify the conduct.
How to write a useful explanation
A short, specific explanation is easier to assess than a general statement that the ad is a scam. Use a structure such as:
- What you searched: quote the query.
- What the ad promised: quote the material claim exactly.
- What you found: describe the destination, qualification, price, service, or identity mismatch.
- Why it matters: explain the practical consequence, such as an apparent impersonation, a missing condition, or a payment request that did not match the advertised business.
- Where to verify: identify any reliable information you checked without treating that check as proof of unlawful conduct.
For example, instead of writing “This is fake,” explain that the ad used a business name, showed one web address, and then sent you to a different domain that requested payment through an intermediary. If the issue is a performance claim, quote the claim and identify the material limitation that was missing or contradicted on the landing page.

Separate what you observed from what you infer. “The displayed URL was A, and the page redirected to B” is stronger and more useful than “The company stole my information” unless you have evidence for that conclusion. Include dates and amounts when they are part of the problem, but do not submit passwords, full payment-card numbers, or other unnecessary sensitive information.

If the ad appears to impersonate a company, solicit payment deceptively, or collect information through a suspicious destination, stop relying on the contact details shown in the ad. Verify the organization through its known official website or use unpaid search results to find contact information independently. Do not assume that a phone number, email address, logo, or domain displayed in the sponsored placement is genuine.
In the United States, submit the conduct to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC’s June 2025 consumer advice specifically tells people who see a misleading ad to report it there. The FTC’s role is not the same as Google’s ad review: Google reviews the placement under its systems and policies, while the FTC prioritizes matters within its jurisdiction and the public interest.
Google and the FTC routes are complementary. A Google report can address the placement, while an FTC report can document suspected consumer fraud. Google’s guidance does not say that submitting through multiple Google channels changes the review result, so do not treat duplicate submissions as a guaranteed escalation.
Local agencies may be better placed to handle a local matter or an individual dispute. The FTC route described here is U.S.-specific; readers elsewhere should use the relevant authority in their own country after checking its current instructions.
What happens after you submit
Google says it sends an email confirmation and reviews the report. It may take appropriate action if necessary. The cited guidance does not provide a review deadline, guarantee removal, promise an individual investigation, or guarantee a detailed response. Keep the confirmation and your evidence in case you need to explain the incident to another authority or to the legitimate business being impersonated.
An ad can stop appearing before Google finishes reviewing it, and an ad can remain visible while a report is assessed. Neither event, by itself, proves that the complaint was accepted or rejected. Avoid publishing private information from the advertiser, sharing suspicious links, or repeatedly clicking the placement to test it.
Do not promise another person that reporting will produce a particular result. The appropriate expectation is receipt, review, and possible action if Google determines that action is necessary.

Troubleshoot common reporting problems
The reporting control is missing
Check that the placement is actually a Google Search ad and not an organic result, a business listing, or an ad shown on another website or app. Try the ad’s menu again at the current page width, then use My Ad Center, the Ads Transparency Center, or the Report an ad form if the control remains unavailable.

Write down everything you remember immediately: query, approximate time, advertiser name, wording, displayed URL, and destination. Check Your recent ads in My Ad Center and search the Ads Transparency Center by advertiser or website. If you cannot locate it, submit the Report an ad form with the remaining details and clearly state which information is approximate.
You are unsure whether the problem is policy or legal
Use the policy route when your concern is about scam, phishing, dangerous, or offensive content. Use the legal-violation route when you are reporting copyright, trademark, counterfeit, or another legal-rights issue. If the facts suggest fraud, report the conduct to the FTC in the United States as well. You can describe uncertainty in the explanation instead of asserting a legal conclusion you cannot establish.
You clicked the result and reached a suspicious page
Do not use the page’s contact details to verify the business. Leave the page, preserve the URL and screenshot if it is safe to do so, and independently locate the organization’s known website or contact information. Include the redirect or payment behavior in your Google report and, for U.S. suspected fraud, in your FTC report.
You cannot tell whether the destination is genuinely connected to the advertiser
Compare the displayed URL with the final destination and with the organization’s known official domain. A different domain is a fact worth reporting, but it is not by itself proof of fraud; legitimate companies sometimes use service providers or payment processors. Explain exactly what changed and why the destination appeared unexpected.
