Report the specific video from the platform’s own report menu. Choose the closest category—such as election misinformation, manipulated media, synthetic media, voter interference, impersonation, or threats—and include the post URL and a concise explanation of the deceptive feature and possible civic harm. A report requests review; it does not guarantee removal. Do not repost the video to criticize it: UK election-security guidance warns that responding can inadvertently amplify suspected disinformation.
Do this first: report the exact post without amplifying it
Open the post or video where you saw it and use that item’s menu to report it. A copy, quote-post, reaction, or repost on another service must be reported separately because each platform reviews the content it hosts. If the video gives false voting instructions, impersonates a candidate or election official, fabricates a statement, threatens people, or appears designed to suppress participation, describe that specific harm in the report.
Do not call a clip “AI-generated” as a proven fact when its provenance is uncertain. Use wording such as “apparently manipulated” or “suspected synthetic media,” and identify the observable problem: a fabricated statement, altered lip movement, false caption, or incorrect voting information. AI generation by itself is not prohibited on every service; disclosure, deception, likely harm, and election-integrity rules are separate questions.
The UK government’s guidance for electoral candidates and officials puts the amplification risk plainly: “Think before you respond to any reports of disinformation. This may inadvertently amplify the suspected disinformation and could make the matter worse.” Read the guidance at gov.uk.

Before reporting: distinguish an odd video from a deceptive one
Compression, poor lighting, dubbing, subtitles, jump cuts, a low frame rate, and ordinary editing can make genuine footage look strange. A convincing voice or face is also not proof that generative AI was used. Start with the claim, not the technology. Ask what a reasonable viewer is being encouraged to believe and whether that belief could affect voting, candidate reputation, public safety, or another civic process.
Where practical, compare the clip with a longer original recording, a transcript, an official candidate or government account, and authoritative election information. Check whether the date, location, speaker, and event match. A reverse search or frame comparison may reveal that an old video has been given a new caption. You do not need to prove the production method before filing a report; you do need to explain the specific misleading feature and any supporting contradiction.
Do not contact the suspected creator, threaten them, or attempt to expose private information. Those actions can create safety and legal risks and can turn a content problem into harassment. Preserve only what is necessary for a reviewer or official authority to locate the post.
Six-step reporting workflow
- Identify the precise claim. Note the exact words, scene, caption, or instruction that appears false or altered. Check a full-length original, an official candidate statement, or authoritative election information where practical. An unusual-looking video is not conclusive proof of synthetic media.
- Preserve identifying details. Copy the direct post URL or identifier, account handle, caption, and the date and time you saw it. A screenshot can help you remember what was displayed, but take one only when lawful and safe. Do not download, edit, or redistribute the clip if doing so increases exposure or violates someone’s rights.
- Open the post’s report menu. Select the closest truthful reason offered in the current app or website. Labels and screen paths change by version, language, content type, and country. Report the video or post itself; report the account too only when its wider conduct is relevant.
- Explain the policy issue. State what the video depicts or asserts, what makes it deceptive, and why it could affect voting or another civic process. Distinguish observed facts from uncertainty. Do not speculate about who created it or their motive unless you have evidence.
- Record the outcome. Save any confirmation number and check the service’s report-status area. A review may result in an AI disclosure, an information overlay, reduced distribution, removal, or no action, depending on the applicable rules.
- Escalate when the stakes require it. Candidates, campaign staff, and election administrators should use the official channels in their jurisdiction as well as the platform report. Suspected crimes belong with police; immediate threats belong with emergency services.
Choose the closest description of the harm

One video can fit more than one category. Select the most specific option available and explain the additional harm in the text box rather than guessing at the creator’s identity.
How to write a strong report
Reviewers generally need to locate the item, understand the alleged violation, and see why it matters. Put the direct post link first if the form permits it. Name the account exactly as displayed, quote only the minimum necessary words, and identify the relevant date or election. Separate what you observed from what you infer: “The audio does not match the candidate’s published statement” is stronger than “This person definitely used a voice clone.”
Explain the likely audience impact without exaggeration. For example, false information that a polling place is closed is a concrete participation risk; a satirical parody that is clearly labeled may be treated differently. If the video is being presented as news, an official announcement, or a direct statement by a candidate, say so. If it includes a threat, identify the target and whether the threat appears imminent.
Attach an authoritative comparison only when it helps verification. A government election page, official transcript, or candidate statement is usually more useful than a long thread of commentary. Do not include another person’s private contact details, medical information, home address, or other unnecessary personal data.

Platform-specific rules and reporting routes
The following policies were reviewed October 13, 2026. Menus can change, so follow the current report flow shown for your account.
YouTube
Use the video’s three-dot menu or YouTube’s official reporting route and select the closest Community Guidelines reason. YouTube’s election-misinformation policy prohibits false or misleading material that suppresses voting, falsely claims a candidate is ineligible, or encourages interference with democratic processes. It separately prohibits technically manipulated or doctored material that misleads viewers and creates a serious risk of egregious harm; its example includes a manipulated clip falsely making a candidate appear to withdraw from a race. Educational, documentary, scientific, artistic, and other public-interest context can affect enforcement, so explain how the clip is presented and why viewers could be misled. A video that discusses a deepfake for reporting or criticism may be treated differently from a clip presented as authentic. Context in the title, description, on-screen text, and surrounding channel matters. Report the particular video, not merely the creator’s political viewpoint.
Facebook, Instagram, and Threads
Report the individual post, reel, or video through its menu. Meta says it applies “Made with AI” labels when it detects industry-shared indicators or a user discloses AI creation. Its approach covers a broad range of AI-generated content, but the label alone does not mean the content violates a rule or will be removed. Other policies—such as voter interference, harassment, or violence—may apply. Meta’s fact-checking process can attach a “False” or “Altered” rating, lower distribution, and show an information overlay. On Facebook, review a submitted report in Support Inbox; in some cases, you can request another review after a decision not to remove the content. Meta reported that 82% of respondents in a 2024 public-opinion survey favored warning labels for AI-generated content showing people saying things they did not say. The survey covered more than 23,000 respondents in 13 countries. This is Meta’s own opinion research, not a measurement of detection accuracy, deepfake prevalence, or whether a particular post breaks a rule.
TikTok
Use the video’s report option and choose the current misinformation, deepfake, edited-media, or AI-generated-content category that best matches the problem. TikTok’s Community Guidelines require creators to disclose realistic-looking AI-generated or significantly edited content. Unlabeled material may be removed, restricted, or labeled according to potential harm; even labeled material is prohibited when it misleads people on matters of public importance or harms individuals. Election rules cover false information about voting procedures, eligibility, candidate qualifications, and results, as well as interference and intimidation. TikTok’s support material explains AI-generated content at its help page, and the integrity rules are at its Community Guidelines. The exact tap-by-tap help route may differ or redirect; use the report control attached to the video and follow the current menu.
Do not assume that choosing an AI category is enough when the real problem is a false polling date or a threat. If the form allows several reasons, include the civic harm; otherwise, describe it in the narrative field.

X
Report the post or media through X’s current reporting flow. X’s civic-integrity rules cover misleading information that could affect participation in elections or other civic processes, including false claims about how, when, or where to participate, suppression, and intimidation. The platform’s general guidance says a report does not automatically suspend an account; the material is reviewed against the rules. A report about the post is different from a report about the account. Use the account route when repeated conduct, coordinated impersonation, or a pattern of civic violations is relevant. Otherwise, reporting the individual post gives reviewers the clearest item to assess.
When an AI label is not enough
A disclosure label answers “was this identified as AI-generated or edited?” It does not answer “is the claim true?” or “does the post violate election rules?” A platform can label a video and leave it online, while a deceptive, voter-suppressing, threatening, or otherwise harmful video can trigger a separate enforcement decision. Conversely, an unlabeled clip is not automatically a criminal deepfake or a removal case. Report the underlying deception and civic risk, not merely the absence of a label.
Disclosure and harm are separate axes. A harmless parody may need a label under a platform’s rules but not merit removal. A realistic, unlabeled video that falsely tells people to vote on the wrong day may implicate both disclosure and voter-interference policies. Explain both facts if they apply.
UK escalation for candidates and election officials
The UK guidance is role- and jurisdiction-specific. Election officials should notify their local Returning Officer about deepfakes and false information about election administration, including who may vote and when, where, or how to vote. Returning Officers should liaise with the Electoral Commission and the local police election contact. Candidates can contact their Returning Officer and political party, in addition to reporting the content to the platform. Independent candidates may contact platforms or police directly. If content may constitute a criminal offence, report it to police as soon as possible. For immediate danger in the UK, call 999. These instructions do not apply automatically outside the UK; elsewhere, use the relevant election authority and emergency service.
Ordinary UK users can still report the post to the service and pass credible information to the affected candidate, election authority, or police when appropriate. Avoid presenting yourself as an investigator or publishing an accusation that could identify a private person incorrectly.
What to write in the report
A short, evidence-based description is more useful than an angry or speculative one. For example:

If you are reporting a threat, add the exact target, time reference, and any indication of immediate danger. If you are reporting impersonation, provide the authentic account or official page. If you are reporting false election logistics, name the correct information and its official source. Avoid filling the report with political opinions unrelated to the specific policy issue.

- Keep the post URL, account name, timestamp, and your factual notes in a private record.
- Do not organize a public pile-on, quote-post the clip, or tag people who might spread it further.
- Watch for a decision, label, distribution change, or request for more information, but do not assume silence means approval.
- If the same video appears on another service, report that copy separately and tailor the category to that service’s rules.
- For threats, doxxing, or imminent physical danger, prioritize personal safety and local emergency or police channels over an ordinary platform queue.
Keep records securely and limit access, especially if they contain account identifiers or screenshots of threatening material. Do not alter the original file or add annotations that could confuse a later reviewer. If a service offers an appeal or another-review option, use it when you can explain why the first decision missed the specific deception; do not submit repeated identical reports simply to increase volume.
Common situations and the safest response
A fake concession or withdrawal video
Save the post link, compare it with the candidate’s official channels, and report manipulated media plus election misinformation. A false withdrawal claim can affect voting even if no polling instruction appears in the clip.
A video telling people to vote at the wrong place
Treat this as potential voter interference. Verify the correct information through the relevant election authority, include that link, and escalate to election officials if the election is imminent. Do not quote-post the false location while correcting it.
A labeled parody that is obviously fictional
An AI label does not automatically make a post removable, and political satire may receive contextual protection. Report it only if the presentation remains plausibly deceptive, targets a person with prohibited abuse, or creates a concrete civic harm.
A threatening deepfake
Do not confront the account. Preserve the URL and minimal evidence, report threats and manipulated media, and contact police or emergency services when there is an immediate risk. Platform reporting should not delay urgent safety action.

Key limits to keep in mind
- Policies and menu names vary by platform, app version, language, geography, and content type.
- No platform promises that every report produces removal, and there is no universal response-time guarantee.
- AI-generation claims require evidence; visual oddities alone can result from compression, editing, subtitles, or ordinary recording artifacts.
- Election law and escalation contacts differ by country. UK Returning Officer and 999 guidance is not global advice.
- A platform’s label, fact-check rating, or decision is not a universal finding about authenticity or legality.
- Do not pay a third party or install an unfamiliar app to submit a report. Use the platform’s official site or application and beware of scams requesting passwords or fees.

No. Labels identify or disclose synthetic media. Enforcement separately considers deception, voter interference, harassment, violence, likely harm, and other policy rules.
What if the same deepfake is reposted on several platforms?
Report each hosted copy through that service’s own menu and tailor the explanation to its categories. A decision on one platform does not automatically transfer to another.
Should I share the video to warn people?
Usually not. Reposting, quote-posting, or embedding the clip can increase its reach. Use a private report and, when necessary, link to an authoritative correction without reproducing the deceptive media.
Who should UK candidates or election officials contact?
