In the UK, enter a normal Little Tern sighting in the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) BirdTrack portal or app. If the birds appear to be nesting, do not approach, search for eggs or stop for photographs: leave the area, control dogs and tell the nearest beach warden, reserve ranger or county bird recorder where the activity is. A colour-ringed bird needs a separate report to ring.ac and LittleTernSightings@rspb.org.uk.

Choose the right reporting route

The best route depends on what you saw, how urgent it is and how sensitive the location may be. These routes complement one another rather than competing.

Situation First action What to include Why this route matters
One or more Little Terns flying, feeding or resting Submit a record in BTO BirdTrack Date, time, site, precise location, number and behaviour Creates a national record and can be passed to the county bird recorder when you give permission
Repeated alarm, nest building, food carrying or adults settling at one spot Move away and contact the nearest warden, ranger or local recorder promptly; also enter the record in BirdTrack Exact place or grid reference, behaviour and any disturbance risk, recorded from a safe distance Allows local staff to check and protect a possible breeding site before it is damaged
Possible new colony or an immediate threat from people, dogs or vehicles Contact the site team or county recorder immediately What is happening now, where, when and whether the birds are being disturbed Time-critical action may be needed; a routine online entry alone could be too slow
Bird wearing a colour ring Report separately through ring.ac and LittleTernSightings@rspb.org.uk Ring colour, code, leg, place or grid reference, date, time and a photo made without approaching Ring data identify movements, survival and site connections

For an unusual or rare bird, send the information directly to the local county bird recorder as well as using BirdTrack. Local signage, reserve information and the BTO county-recorder directory are the safest places to obtain current contact details.

Protect the birds before you record anything

Little Terns nest directly on coastal sand or shingle. Their eggs and chicks are cryptically camouflaged, so a person can walk toward a bird without realising a nest is underfoot. Adults may abandon a site, expose eggs to heat or predators, or repeatedly flush from chicks when people or loose dogs come too close.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Stay on marked paths and outside ropes, fences and other exclusion zones.
  • Keep dogs on a lead or under firm control, and never allow one to run through a beach or shingle colony.
  • Do not enter a colony, crouch near a suspected nest, move vegetation or shingle, or search for eggs or chicks.
  • Do not linger for a better view or photograph. Use binoculars from the distance already allowed by the site.
  • Follow the warden’s instruction even if it is more cautious than general guidance. RSPB advises keeping at least 100 metres from roped areas and chicks; local wardens’ directions take priority.
  • Do not post a nest location, map pin or recognisable landmarks on social media.

Little Terns are Schedule 1 birds under the Wildlife and Countryside Act framework. Disturbing them while breeding, including disturbance for photography, is illegal without a formal licence. Reporting a concern is helpful; trying to verify it yourself is not.

What to write down from a safe distance

A useful record does not require a nest photograph. Accuracy about place, time and behaviour is more valuable than a close view. Make notes as soon as you are safely away.

Location

  • Use the beach, estuary, reserve or coastal site name shown on signs.
  • Add a precise description such as the nearest access point, groyne, car park, river mouth or beach section.
  • Include a grid reference or map position if you can obtain it without entering a restricted area. If the site is sensitive, share the precise position only with the recorder or wardens, not publicly.

Date, time and effort

  • Record the calendar date and approximate start and end time of your observation.
  • Note how long you watched and from where. A short observation from a path should not be presented as a prolonged survey.

Numbers and identification

  • Give the number of Little Terns seen, separating adults from juveniles only when you are confident.
  • Use the species name Little Tern and, in BirdTrack, select Sternula albifrons.
  • Describe any features that helped you identify the bird, especially if other small terns were present.

Behaviour

Write exactly what happened rather than translating it into a stronger claim. Useful observations include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Repeated alarm calls or agitation directed toward a person, dog or predator.
  • Adults carrying fish or other food toward one place.
  • Nest-building activity.
  • Adults repeatedly landing, settling or disappearing at the same spot.
  • A pair remaining in suitable sand or shingle habitat.
  • Chicks, fledglings or adults feeding young, if visible without approaching.

State uncertainty plainly. “Two birds repeatedly landed behind the third rope” is better evidence than “confirmed nest” when you did not see a nest. Never upgrade “possible” to “confirmed.”

Submit an ordinary sighting in BTO BirdTrack

BirdTrack is the normal UK reporting route for an ordinary or interesting Little Tern sighting. Use the BTO BirdTrack website or mobile app when you are safely away from the birds and can enter the details accurately.

  1. Open BirdTrack. Sign in to the BTO BirdTrack portal or app, or create an account if you do not already have one.
  2. Start a new observation. Choose the date, time and site. Select the beach, reserve or other location as precisely as the system and your safety allow.
  3. Select the species. Search for Little Tern and choose Sternula albifrons, not a similarly named tern.
  4. Enter the count. Add the number seen and any age or sex information you are certain about. Do not fill gaps with an estimate that implies more precision than you had.
  5. Add behaviour and breeding evidence. Use the comments or breeding-evidence fields to record alarm, food carrying, nest building, repeated settling or other observed actions. Describe the observation in your own words.
  6. Check the map position. Confirm that the pin is on the correct beach or reserve. If a breeding location is sensitive, avoid publishing a public map point and use the site’s sensitive-record options where available.
  7. Enable recorder sharing when appropriate. Allow the record to be passed to the relevant county bird recorder. This gives local experts access to information that may be restricted from public maps.
  8. Review and submit. Check the date, species, count, position and behaviour once more, then submit. Keep the confirmation or record number if BirdTrack provides one.

BirdTrack records can be passed to the appropriate county bird recorder when the observer gives permission. Sensitive breeding records may be restricted from public maps while remaining available to authorised recorders, so confidentiality and conservation use are not mutually exclusive.

Report suspected nesting locally and discreetly

A one-off sighting that includes breeding behaviour can alert monitoring groups to a previously unknown site. The online record is important, but it may not reach someone on the beach quickly enough if the colony is at immediate risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to contact a warden or ranger immediately

  • Birds are repeatedly alarm-calling at people or dogs.
  • Adults are carrying food or settling repeatedly in a small area.
  • You see people, vehicles or dogs entering a roped or otherwise sensitive area.
  • The site is unmarked and appears to be a new breeding location.
  • A tide, event, construction activity or other change could affect the birds before routine records are reviewed.

What to say

Use the contact details on the nearest sign, reserve noticeboard or official site information. Give the staff member the beach or reserve name, the safest precise location you can provide, time of observation, number of birds, behaviour and any immediate disturbance. Explain that you observed from a distance and did not approach the birds. If there is no warden, contact the local county bird recorder and submit the BirdTrack record as soon as you can.

Do not attempt to mark the location yourself, move a rope, challenge another visitor or inspect the suspected nest. Staff can decide whether a temporary barrier, patrol or further survey is appropriate.

Report a colour-ringed Little Tern

Colour rings are handled separately from a routine BirdTrack sighting. Report the observation through ring.ac and email LittleTernSightings@rspb.org.uk.

Include all of the following:

  • The colour of every ring and its code, reading the code exactly as seen.
  • Which leg carries each ring, and whether a ring is above or below another ring.
  • The bird’s location, preferably with a grid reference or an unambiguous site description.
  • Date and exact or approximate time.
  • What the bird was doing and whether it was alone or with other Little Terns.
  • A photograph, if one was taken without moving closer or causing the bird to flush.

If a code is partly obscured, report the characters you can see and explain which positions are uncertain. Do not return to obtain a closer image. A cautious partial report can be matched with other sightings; a photograph gained by disturbing a breeding bird can cause harm and may breach the law.

How breeding evidence is assessed

BirdTrack and the Rare Breeding Birds Panel distinguish levels of evidence. The distinction matters because a suitable habitat or a pair does not prove a nest, while several repeated behaviours can justify a local check.

Observation What it supports How to record it
Single bird flying over or feeding Presence at the site Report the sighting without breeding evidence
Pair in suitable sand or shingle habitat Possible breeding interest Record the habitat and avoid implying a nest
Nest building or adults repeatedly settling at one place Stronger indication of breeding activity Describe the repeated action and exact safe viewpoint
Adults carrying food or showing repeated alarm around a likely nest Probable nearby young or nest Report the behaviour and notify the local team promptly
Chicks or adults feeding young Direct evidence of breeding Record only what was visible from the permitted distance

Use the evidence category that matches what you actually saw. If wind, distance, glare or a brief view prevented certainty, say so in the notes. Local experts can combine your record with other observations.

Keep a sensitive location confidential

Little Tern colonies are vulnerable to disturbance and predation. A public post can attract well-meaning visitors who unintentionally trample eggs, flush adults or bring dogs into the colony. Share precise coordinates only through BirdTrack’s recorder-sharing mechanism, directly with a warden or ranger, or with the county recorder.

In a public report, a broad site name is safer than a pin beside the nest. Do not include the location in a photograph caption, file name or social-media story. If a recorder asks for clarification, provide the detail privately and explain whether any disturbance is still occurring.

If you suspect deliberate disturbance or another wildlife crime

Do not confront the person involved and do not approach the nest to inspect damage. From a safe position, note the time, place, people, dogs, vehicles, direction of travel and what you saw. Follow the relevant local police or wildlife-crime reporting advice, and tell the site warden or ranger. A factual account made promptly is more useful than an argument on the beach.

If there is an immediate danger to people, contact emergency services. Otherwise, use the local authority or police route specified on site signage. Keep any original photographs or notes, but do not return to collect more evidence if doing so would disturb the birds.

Why every accurate record helps

Little Terns are small summer visitors that nest on open coastal sand and shingle. The BTO’s current species account gives a UK breeding estimate of 1,450 pairs for 2013–17. RSPB reports a 39% decline since the 1980s and identifies disturbance, predation and habitat loss as major pressures. Its Tern Around Project page gives an adult body weight of 40–60 g (RSPB, 2026).

Those figures explain why a record without a nest can still matter. A correctly located sighting helps show when birds arrive, which beaches they use and whether breeding behaviour is occurring outside known colonies. A discreet report of repeated behaviour can allow a monitoring group to protect a site before the location becomes obvious to the public.

Common reporting mistakes and fixes

Approaching to confirm a nest

Problem: walking toward an adult, following it when it lands or searching the shingle for eggs. Fix: stop, retreat along the route you used, and report the behaviour rather than the nest itself.

Publishing the exact location

Problem: sharing a map pin or “secret beach” post. Fix: send precise details privately to the warden or recorder and keep public descriptions broad.

Using only a public online record when action is urgent

Problem: entering a BirdTrack record while people or dogs are currently disturbing birds. Fix: alert the nearest warden, ranger or county recorder first, then complete BirdTrack.

Calling a possibility confirmed

Problem: selecting confirmed breeding when you saw only one bird or suitable habitat. Fix: enter the exact behaviour and choose the cautious evidence level.

Forgetting colour-ring details

Problem: reporting “a ringed tern” without the code or leg. Fix: submit the colours, code, leg, date, time and location separately through ring.ac and the RSPB email address, without trying to obtain a closer photograph.

Letting a dog run ahead

Problem: a dog flushes adults or crosses a roped area before you can call it back. Fix: use a lead in coastal tern habitat, obey every barrier and leave the area if birds become alarmed.

A quick checklist before you press submit

  • Have you left the birds and colony undisturbed?
  • Did you record the correct date, time, site and number?
  • Can you describe the behaviour without overstating certainty?
  • Did you note a safe location or grid reference for the recorder?
  • Have you kept sensitive details off public social media?
  • Did you contact a warden or ranger if nesting or disturbance was time-critical?
  • If the bird wore a colour ring, did you report the code, colours and leg separately?

For a routine UK sighting, BirdTrack is the appropriate starting point. For suspected nesting, distance and discretion come first, followed by a prompt local alert. For a colour-ringed bird, use ring.ac and LittleTernSightings@rspb.org.uk as well as recording the sighting details.
