Don’t open, run, repost, or forward a suspected game build or malware link. Report the account or message where you found it; report a malicious URL through the relevant browser or service; and notify the game’s publisher or rights holder if the file appears to be a leaked build. These are separate reports, and you may need to make more than one.
Choose the reporting channel that matches the problem
Start with the service that controls the content. A chat platform can review the account or message; a browser-safety service can assess a URL; the publisher or rights holder can assess a suspected leaked build. A link shared in chat may warrant both an account report and a URL report.
| What you found | Where to report it | What to include |
|---|---|---|
| A suspicious message or account | The platform where it appeared | Account or profile, message context, approximate time, and the URL as text if the form permits |
| A phishing page or malicious URL | The relevant browser or service’s safety-report form | The URL and a concise explanation; do not include personal information in Google report text |
| A suspected leaked game build | The hosting service’s content-report channel and the game’s official publisher or rights holder | The listing or file location as text, host, and relevant context; do not upload or send the build |
| A vulnerability in Valve systems or software | Valve’s security program, if the issue fits its scope | Report a vulnerability, not merely a suspicious download or leaked build |
Do not interact with the file or link
Do not download, open, run, mirror, or forward the suspected file. Avoid clicking the link to investigate it, and do not repost it publicly as a warning. Steam warns that gaming malware can be disguised as pirated software, cheats, fake demos or betas, and gaming-related utilities. Its guidance is to be skeptical of software links and download software from the official source: Steam Account Security Recommendations.

Use the platform’s own report function on the message, profile, or account. Keep the report tied to its original context rather than copying the content into a public post. For Steam, report the account through its Steam profile. Steam says this is preferable to submitting a support ticket for a scammer, hijacker, or phisher, and notes that moderation action depends on verifiable conduct: How to Report a Scammer, Hijacker or Phisher.

Report a suspicious URL through the right safety form
If the link leads to a phishing page or suspected malware, submit the URL to the relevant browser or service rather than relying only on a chat-platform report. Google provides separate forms for phishing and malware through its Search Central reporting page. Google defines phishing as a page designed to imitate another page to steal personal information and cautions that information entered in report text may be sent to the site owner; do not put personally identifying information in that text.
Google Safe Browsing also distinguishes reporting a new phishing URL, a URL incorrectly classified as phishing, and a malware URL not listed. Select the form for the actual issue; an incorrect-classification appeal is not the route for a newly discovered threat: Safe Browsing reporting documentation.

Report a suspected leaked game build to the host and rights holder
Use the file-hosting service’s content-abuse process to report the listing, then notify the game’s official publisher or rights holder. There is no single universal leaked-build reporting form established across hosts and games, so use the official channels for the particular service and game.
In the United States, a copyright takedown notice under section 512 is a rights-holder or authorized-agent process, not a general-purpose user report. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that a notice must identify the copyrighted work and allegedly infringing material, provide contact details, and include good-faith and authorization statements. If you are a bystander, send the evidence to the rights holder rather than making legal representations you are not authorized to make: U.S. Copyright Office: Section 512. This guidance describes U.S. law and should not be assumed to apply in other countries.

Send useful evidence without spreading the file
Where the report form allows, provide concise details that help the service locate the content:
- The platform or hosting service and the profile, channel, or listing involved.
- The approximate date and time and a short description of what happened.
- The URL as text, if the form accepts it and you can provide it without opening or reposting the content.
- A screenshot only if capturing it does not require reopening, downloading, or running the suspected content.
Do not attach the executable, mirror it, or send it to an individual by email. If an official recipient specifically requests the file, ask for a safe, official transfer method before sending anything. Reporting forms differ, so provide only what the service requests and permits.

If you already entered a password or ran the file
Treat this as an account- and device-security issue as well as a report. If you entered credentials, secure the affected account and any related accounts promptly. Steam recommends reviewing authorized devices, signing out everywhere if needed, changing the Steam password, checking the associated email and accounts, and scanning the computer for malware. A scan is a useful step, not proof that a device is clean. Follow Steam’s current account-security guidance and the official recovery process for any other affected service.
Recommended Free Tools
Use Steam Support for a personal Steam account problem. Valve’s public HackerOne security program is for vulnerabilities in Valve servers, services, web properties, or first-party software; a suspicious link or leaked game build alone is not automatically a vulnerability report.
