Report a deceased family member through the official myAadhaar service named “Reporting of Death of a Family Member.” First obtain the death certificate, then authenticate as the reporting family member and submit the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number and the demographic details requested by the portal. UIDAI verifies the report before deciding whether to deactivate the Aadhaar number; submitting the form is not an instant deactivation confirmation.
The service was launched on 9 June 2025. Its participating State/UT list can change, so use the live myAadhaar service and current UIDAI notices rather than relying on an old coverage count.
What this UIDAI service does
Aadhaar deactivation after a death is a UIDAI decision based on verified death information. A family member’s report starts that process; it does not itself cancel the number immediately.
The 2026 amendment to UIDAI’s Enrolment and Update Regulations requires UIDAI, after receiving death information (including the Aadhaar number when available), to verify the information as prescribed and deactivate the number upon verification. To check a death report or the accuracy of information in the Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR), UIDAI may seek information from the Registrar General of India, a State Chief Registrar under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, another entity in the Aadhaar ecosystem, or an individual.

UIDAI’s June 2025 announcement describes the outcome as action “for the deactivation, or otherwise,” after validation. That wording matters: a submitted report can lead to deactivation, but the result depends on UIDAI’s verification.
Who should use the service?
The service is intended for a family member notifying UIDAI about a death. The reporting person must authenticate through myAadhaar and provide information about the deceased person. The form is not a general request to cancel an Aadhaar number for convenience, to close an estate, or to replace procedures handled by the death-registering authority.
Use the official death record as the source for the report. If several relatives are handling the estate, coordinate so that one person submits an accurate report and preserves the acknowledgement. A second relative should not file a duplicate merely to obtain a different reference number.

Obtain the death certificate
UIDAI’s November 2025 announcement recommends reporting after you have obtained the death certificate from the authority that registered the death. Keep the certificate available while completing the report. The announcement does not state that the certificate must be uploaded, so do not assume an upload is required unless the live portal specifically asks for one.
The certificate is still useful even when the portal only asks for a Death Registration Number. It lets you verify the spelling of the name, date of death, registration details and the authority that issued the record before you submit anything.
Collect the deceased person’s Aadhaar details
- The deceased person’s Aadhaar number, if available.
- The Death Registration Number issued by the death-registering authority.
- The demographic details requested on the service page, entered exactly as they appear in the relevant records.
If the Aadhaar number is unavailable, do not substitute a guessed number. Check the live form for the alternatives UIDAI provides and use the death-registration information accurately. Do not use the reporting family member’s Aadhaar number in the deceased person’s field.
Use the correct death-registration jurisdiction
The service’s availability is tied to the State/UT where the death was registered. That jurisdiction may not match the State/UT shown in the Aadhaar record. UIDAI highlighted this distinction in its February 2026 parliamentary response: the State/UT in an Aadhaar holder’s address can differ from the State/UT where the death was registered.
For example, a person may have an Aadhaar address in one State but die and be registered in another. Select the latter if the portal asks where the death was registered. If the registration took place in a Union Territory, use the corresponding UT option rather than inferring jurisdiction from the permanent address.
Step-by-step: submit a family death report
- Open the official myAadhaar portal. Navigate to the service labelled Reporting of Death of a Family Member. Use UIDAI’s official portal, not a private agent’s form or an unsolicited link.
- Check the State/UT selector or availability message. Choose the State/UT where the death was registered. If that jurisdiction is not currently supported, do not select a different State/UT merely to continue; wait for the service to become available or follow instructions displayed by UIDAI.
- Authenticate as the reporting family member. Complete the authentication method presented by myAadhaar. The June 2025 launch announcement says the family member authenticates before submitting the report.
- Enter the deceased person’s Aadhaar number. Carefully compare every digit with the deceased person’s record. A transposed digit can associate the report with the wrong individual.
- Enter the Death Registration Number. Copy the number from the death-registration record without changing punctuation, spacing or characters if the form accepts them.
- Supply the requested demographic details. Complete each field using the deceased person’s official information. Do not enter the reporting family member’s details where the form asks for the deceased person’s details.
- Review the declaration and preview. Check the Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number, name, date and jurisdiction fields shown on the review screen. Correct errors before final submission.
- Submit the report and save the acknowledgement. Keep the acknowledgement number, confirmation screen or downloadable receipt. A successful submission proves that information was sent; it is not proof that UIDAI has already deactivated the Aadhaar number.
What information should be checked before pressing submit?
Read each field against the death certificate and registration record, not against memory. Confirm that the Aadhaar number belongs to the deceased person, that the Death Registration Number is complete, and that names and dates have not been swapped with those of another relative. Pay special attention when family members have similar names or when records use initials, transliteration or different date formats.
Check the State/UT twice. The relevant location is the place where the death was registered, not necessarily the deceased person’s residence, birthplace or Aadhaar address. If the portal displays a preview, save it only in a secure location and correct any discrepancy before submitting.

What happens after submission
UIDAI validates the report
UIDAI compares the submitted information through its prescribed verification process. It may obtain confirmation from official death-registration authorities or other permitted sources. The family member does not perform this internal verification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe 2026 regulations allow UIDAI to seek information from the Registrar General of India, a State Chief Registrar, another entity in the Aadhaar ecosystem or an individual when checking the accuracy of the CIDR or a death report. That means the report can be checked against records beyond the details typed into the form.
UIDAI makes the deactivation decision
After validation, UIDAI takes further action for deactivation or otherwise. The service announcement does not promise an instant result or a fixed processing time for an individual report. Treat the acknowledgement as a tracking record, not as a status certificate.
Do not tell banks, insurers, pension offices or other organizations that Aadhaar deactivation is complete merely because the form was accepted. Those organizations may have their own death-notification and account-settlement procedures, which are separate from UIDAI’s process.
Do not confuse three different checkpoints
| Checkpoint | What it means | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Form submitted | Your authenticated report and supplied details reached UIDAI. | It does not prove that the death was validated or the Aadhaar number was deactivated. |
| Validation in progress | UIDAI is checking the death information through its prescribed process. | It does not guarantee the final outcome or a particular completion date. |
| Deactivation confirmed | UIDAI has completed its decision to deactivate the Aadhaar number. | It should not be inferred solely from the existence of a submission acknowledgement. |
Check State/UT coverage on the live portal
Coverage has expanded and the exact current list is changeable. UIDAI said the service covered 24 States/UTs at its 9 June 2025 launch. A 26 November 2025 release said 25 States/UTs then had the portal facility. Those dated figures should not be presented as the October 2026 list.

If it does not, record the message shown by the portal and check current UIDAI notices for expansion or an alternate official route. Do not use the Aadhaar address State/UT as a substitute for the death-registration State/UT.
There is no sound basis for assuming that a service available in one State/UT is automatically available nationwide. Availability is a portal feature that UIDAI can expand or change. A dated announcement is useful context, but the selector and notices shown when you actually submit are the practical authority.
How to keep a reliable record of your report
- Save the submission acknowledgement or reference number in two secure locations.
- Record the date and time of submission and the State/UT selected for death registration.
- Retain the death certificate and the Death Registration Number with other estate documents.
- Store screenshots only on devices or accounts controlled by the family; avoid posting Aadhaar or death-registration details in public forums.
- When contacting UIDAI later, quote the acknowledgement number rather than sending Aadhaar details through an unverified email or messaging account.
If the portal rejects a field, compare the entry with the death-registration record instead of altering the official number to fit an assumed format. If the service displays a technical error, try again through the official portal later and preserve any error reference shown.
Keep the record until you have an official final status or have resolved a correction request. A browser closing after submission, a text message from an unknown sender or a payment receipt from an intermediary is not equivalent to UIDAI confirmation.

If a living person was wrongly marked as deceased
A mistaken death report can have serious consequences because it may result in Aadhaar deactivation. The affected Aadhaar holder should follow UIDAI’s current reactivation instructions, not submit a second death report or rely on an informal agent.

Use the revised procedure listed for 1 October 2026
UIDAI’s official documents index lists a revised reactivation procedure dated 1 October 2026. The complete text of that revision was not available in the official material reviewed for this article. Before acting, open the current UIDAI document or notice and follow its operative address, form, identity-proof requirements, appointment instructions and contact method.
Because the revised document may change where and how a request is lodged, do not assume that an office, email address or form mentioned in an older circular remains valid. Use the instructions currently displayed by UIDAI and retain proof of delivery for anything you send.
Treat the July 2025 circular as historical
An earlier UIDAI circular dated 7 July 2025 instructed an affected Aadhaar holder to send the prescribed request to the nearest Regional or State Office by post, email or in person. The office could examine the request and call the holder to a designated Aadhaar centre for complete biometric information capture if needed. That circular described a two-week window for the biometric appointment after receipt of the application and a status update within 30 days after biometrics.

Because a revised procedure is now listed, those 2025 routes and timelines may no longer be operative. Use them only as historical context and verify the October 2026 instructions before sending documents or travelling to an office.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Reporting before obtaining the death certificate
UIDAI’s November 2025 announcement recommends obtaining the certificate first. Having the official record reduces the risk of entering an incorrect Death Registration Number or date. The portal may or may not request a certificate upload; follow the live form rather than adding unsupported attachments.
Choosing the Aadhaar address State/UT
The service concerns the jurisdiction that registered the death. Since the Aadhaar address State/UT can differ, selecting the address jurisdiction can misroute the report or make the details inconsistent.
Assuming submission equals deactivation
Validation is a separate step. Keep the acknowledgement until UIDAI provides a final status through an official channel.
Using a paid intermediary
No private service can guarantee or legitimately accelerate UIDAI’s verification decision. The process depends on official identity and death-registration information. Never disclose one-time passwords, biometric information or complete Aadhaar details to an unsolicited caller claiming to be able to deactivate the record.
Submitting duplicate reports
Duplicate entries can make reconciliation harder. If a report was submitted successfully, use its acknowledgement and the official support route for a correction or status question instead of repeatedly filing the same information.
Guessing when a number is missing
An incorrect Aadhaar number or Death Registration Number can point UIDAI to the wrong record. If a number is unavailable or illegible, use only the alternatives and instructions presented by the live service; never create a plausible number or borrow one from another family member.

Sending documents through unofficial channels
Death certificates and identity details are sensitive. Do not email scans to an address supplied by an unsolicited caller or upload them to a private “verification” site. Send documents only through an official UIDAI channel when the current procedure specifically requests them.

The family-reporting service was introduced on 9 June 2025 to give relatives a formal way to notify UIDAI. UIDAI’s 26 November 2025 release said more than 2 crore deceased persons’ Aadhaar numbers had been deactivated and that 25 States/UTs had the portal facility at that time.
In a parliamentary response submitted by Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Shri Jitin Prasada to the Lok Sabha on 4 February 2026, UIDAI reported that more than 2.5 crore Aadhaar numbers of deceased persons had been deactivated. This is a cumulative national figure as of that response, not a guarantee about how quickly an individual report will be processed.
The national total should therefore be read as a scale indicator, not as an individual service-level commitment. It does not show that every report is completed in the same period, nor does it replace checking the status of your own acknowledgement.

- Type the portal address yourself or reach it through UIDAI’s official website; avoid links received by text, email or social media.
- Check that the browser connection is secure and that the page identifies the official UIDAI service.
- Do not publish the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number or death certificate image online.
- Use only the authentication method shown by myAadhaar. UIDAI will not need a family member to share an OTP with a stranger.
- After completing the report, sign out of the portal and remove downloaded copies from shared or public computers.
Limit access within the family to people handling the notification. When storing files, use a private device or account and avoid naming files with the full Aadhaar number. If a printout is no longer needed, dispose of it securely rather than leaving it in a public recycling bin.

When to seek official help
Use UIDAI’s current help or grievance channel if the State/UT is listed but the form repeatedly fails, the acknowledgement cannot be retrieved, the submitted details contain an error, or a living person appears to have been marked deceased. Include the acknowledgement number and error reference where available, but send personal documents only through the official channel requested by UIDAI.
For a wrongly deactivated living person, prioritize the revised 1 October 2026 reactivation instructions. Do not rely on the older two-week appointment or 30-day status language unless UIDAI’s current procedure repeats those timelines.
Questions families commonly ask
Does submitting the form automatically deactivate Aadhaar?
No. Submission starts UIDAI’s verification process. UIDAI says further action is taken for deactivation, or otherwise, after validation.
Must I upload the death certificate?
The November 2025 announcement recommends obtaining the certificate but does not state that it must be uploaded. Follow the fields and upload instructions shown on the live myAadhaar service.
Which State/UT should I select?
Select the State/UT where the death was registered. It can differ from the State/UT in the deceased person’s Aadhaar address.

Do not guess or substitute another person’s number. Check the live form for any officially provided alternative and enter the death-registration information exactly.
Is there a fixed processing time?
The service announcement does not promise an individual processing time. Keep the acknowledgement and use UIDAI’s official support route if a status question remains unresolved.
Can a paid agent speed up deactivation?
No legitimate intermediary can guarantee or accelerate UIDAI’s validation decision. Use the official portal and protect authentication credentials.
What should a living person do after a wrongful deactivation?
Follow UIDAI’s revised reactivation procedure dated 1 October 2026. The July 2025 circular’s routes and timelines are historical unless the current procedure repeats them.
Can I file multiple reports to be safe?
Avoid duplicates. Keep the first acknowledgement and contact UIDAI through an official channel for corrections or status questions.
