Report the Marketplace listing (and seller, when Facebook offers that control) from the listing itself. If a separate profile is pretending to be you, report that profile through Facebook’s imposter-account process as well. Save the listing URL and screenshots first if it is safe to do so. Then monitor Facebook’s Support Inbox for the decision and any option to request another review. If your own account was taken over, use facebook.com/hacked. If the impersonation led to financial identity misuse in the United States, follow the FTC’s steps at IdentityTheft.gov.
Identify what you need to report
A fake Marketplace listing and an account that impersonates you are different targets. Reporting only one may leave the other visible, so match each problem to the relevant Facebook control.

A listing that copies your name does not, by itself, prove that your Facebook account was hacked or that credit fraud occurred. Treat those as separate possibilities and take the corresponding step only when the facts fit.

Save evidence before the listing disappears
Marketplace content can change or vanish while you are preparing a report. If doing so does not put you at risk, preserve the information you may need to explain what happened:

- Copy the complete listing URL from your browser or the share option.
- Capture screenshots showing the seller name, profile photo, listing photos, description, price, location and any messages or contact details.
- Record the date and time you saw the listing and why the name identifies you.
- Save messages, payment requests or shipping claims in their original form. Do not edit screenshots in a way that removes context.
This is a personal record, not a requirement imposed by Facebook. Do not send identity documents, account passwords, one-time codes or additional personal information to the suspected impersonator. Avoid arguing with the seller; engagement can expose more information and can give the account time to delete evidence.
Report the fake Marketplace listing or seller
Facebook’s Help Center provides a route for reporting a Marketplace seller in its shopping-safety guidance. The exact menu wording and placement can differ by device, region and account state, so use the report control Facebook currently displays rather than relying on a fixed sequence of taps.
- Open the suspicious Marketplace listing while signed in to Facebook.
- Find the listing’s available options or report control. On a desktop browser this is usually near the listing actions; in an app it may be behind an options menu. Facebook can change these labels.
- Choose the reason that best describes the problem, such as fraud, a scam or identity-related abuse, when that choice is presented.
- Follow the on-screen questions and submit the report. Describe the specific connection to your name and identify any evidence visible in the listing.
- When Facebook offers a seller-level report, submit that as well. A seller report addresses the account’s Marketplace activity; a listing report addresses the individual item.
Do not assume a report guarantees removal. Facebook says reported content is assessed against its Community Standards, and it acts when it finds a violation. A report can therefore result in no removal even when the listing appears suspicious to you. The decision and any available next step appear in Support Inbox, covered below.

Report a profile that is pretending to be you
If the seller’s profile uses your name, photographs, biography or other identifying details to present itself as you, report the profile separately through Facebook’s imposter-account route described in its Help Center guidance. This is a different report from the Marketplace listing.
- Open the profile that is representing itself as you.
- Use the profile’s current report option and select the identity-impersonation or imposter choice, if shown.
- Complete Facebook’s prompts. The service may ask who the profile is impersonating and may request information needed to evaluate the report.
- Submit the report and retain the profile URL with your listing evidence.
Interface prompts can vary, and Facebook may require you to be signed in. If the profile has copied several listings, report each listing through its own report control in addition to the profile report.
Check Support Inbox and request another review when offered
After submitting a report, check Facebook’s Support Inbox for its status and decision. Facebook’s guidance on reported content explains that the decision is shown there. For some decisions, Facebook presents an option to request another review; use that option only when it appears.
In a review request, be precise rather than repeating a general accusation. State which part of the listing or profile uses your identity, identify the matching URLs and explain any new evidence. Keep your own copy of the submitted text and screenshots. A second review is not available for every report, so the absence of a button means Facebook has not offered that path for that decision.

Use a separate track for each type of harm
One incident can involve several problems, but no single Facebook form handles all of them. A listing-only problem calls for the Marketplace report and an evidence record. When a profile also adopts your identity, file the imposter report too. When your login, email address, phone number or messages have changed without your permission, begin account recovery as well. If a company or lender records a transaction in your name, that is a financial identity-theft matter requiring the affected business and the FTC process.
Keeping these tracks separate makes your explanations clearer. In each report, identify the exact URL, the name or photograph that belongs to you, and whether the same account is offering goods, contacting people or requesting payment. Do not describe an account takeover unless you have signs of unauthorized access; copying public information can happen without access to your account.
When your own Facebook account may be compromised
Seeing a fake listing that uses your name is not proof that someone entered your account. Look for independent signs of compromise, such as an unfamiliar login, changed email address or phone number, messages you did not send, or settings you cannot access.
If you cannot access the account or see unauthorized activity, start Facebook’s recovery process at facebook.com/hacked. Facebook recommends using a device you have used to log in before, because that can help the recovery flow recognize the account.
- Open the recovery address directly rather than following a link sent by the suspected seller.
- Follow the identity and security checks Facebook presents.
- After access is restored, change the Facebook password to a unique value and secure the email account associated with it.
- Review recent sessions, contact details, connected apps and messages for changes you did not make.
- Keep the Marketplace and impersonation reports active; account recovery does not replace those content reports.
If the recovery flow cannot verify you, use only the alternatives Facebook shows on that page. Do not pay an unknown “account recovery” service or share a password or security code with anyone claiming to be able to restore the account.
If the incident includes financial identity theft
A copied Marketplace name can be harmful without involving financial fraud. Escalate beyond Facebook when someone has used your identity to open an account, obtain credit, make a purchase, redirect a payment or otherwise create a financial obligation in your name.

- Contact each affected company through a verified channel and explain that the transaction or account resulted from identity theft.
- Change passwords and other login credentials, especially where you reused them.
- Place a fraud alert or credit freeze when appropriate. The FTC describes these as available protective options; choose the one that matches your situation.
- Review your credit reports for accounts or inquiries you do not recognize.
- Submit the incident through IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC says its service creates an Identity Theft Report and recovery plan.
IdentityTheft.gov is a U.S. federal resource. Its report does not cause the FTC to resolve an individual consumer’s dispute; you still need to work with the affected businesses and financial institutions. A paid identity-monitoring product is not required to report a Marketplace listing or to use these FTC resources.

If the fake seller is contacting friends, customers or local buyers, warn likely targets through a channel you already trust, such as a phone number or email address you had before the incident. Tell them not to send money, identity documents, passwords or verification codes to the account. Provide the genuine way to reach you.
Do not publish your address, identification number, private phone number or full screenshots containing other people’s personal data merely to prove the impersonation. If you post a warning publicly, redact unnecessary details and preserve the unredacted material privately for the reporting process.
What Facebook can and cannot guarantee
- Reporting is an evaluation, not an automatic takedown. Facebook says it removes reported content when it determines that the content violates its Community Standards.
- A report can have a different outcome from what you expect. The content may remain online, the seller may be restricted without the listing disappearing immediately, or Facebook may ask for more information.
- Support Inbox is the authoritative place for your report decision. Check it rather than relying on an email or message from someone claiming to represent Facebook.
- Review rights are decision-specific. Request another review only when Facebook displays that option.
- Marketplace reporting and account recovery are separate. Reporting a listing does not secure a compromised account, and recovering an account does not automatically report every fake listing.
After you submit the reports
Keep a simple timeline showing when you found the listing, when you reported the listing and profile, and when Facebook posted each decision. Note which URLs were included and whether anyone you know received a message or payment request. This helps you give consistent information to a bank, affected company or other responder if the incident expands.
Check Support Inbox periodically for both the listing and profile reports. If Facebook asks for additional information, answer only through the logged-in Facebook workflow. Do not use contact details supplied by the suspected seller or by an unsolicited “support” account. Continue warning likely contacts while the reports are pending, but avoid reposting the impersonator’s links in a way that could drive more traffic to them.
Troubleshooting common situations
The listing disappeared before you reported it
Submit a profile or seller report if the seller account is still available, and retain the URL and screenshots. Warn affected contacts and include the evidence if you need to explain the incident to a payment provider or law-enforcement agency. A missing listing does not establish whether Facebook removed it, the seller deleted it or it expired.
The report menu does not show an identity option
Choose the closest accurate category Facebook provides and describe the identity misuse in the explanation field. Report the profile separately through the imposter route if a profile is involved. Do not select an unrelated reason just to force a particular workflow.

You cannot view the seller’s profile
Use the listing report while it remains accessible and save the listing URL. If a friend can see a public profile that you cannot, ask them to send the public URL rather than requesting their login or private account information.
Facebook closes the report without removing the content
Read the decision in Support Inbox and request another review if Facebook offers it. Explain the specific identity connection and attach any permitted context. If the content involves a payment, account takeover or threat, continue the separate recovery steps with the affected company, Facebook’s hacked-account flow or the appropriate authorities; a content decision does not settle those issues.

Stop communicating through that account. Facebook’s reporting and recovery pages are the proper starting points; a Marketplace seller does not need your password, login code or identity documents to sell an item to you. Contact people who may have received the request and tell them to disregard it.

Will Facebook definitely remove the listing after I report it?
No. Facebook evaluates reports against its Community Standards and removes content when it determines that a violation occurred. Check Support Inbox for the decision; some decisions include an option to request another review.
What should I do if the listing disappears first?
Keep the URL, screenshots and timeline. If the seller profile remains available, report it. The disappearance alone does not show whether Facebook removed the listing, the seller deleted it or it expired.
Do I need to send my ID to the seller to prove I am the real person?
