Use the report control attached to the dangerous message, select the safety, abuse, or legal category that best fits, and explain the specific risk. Before submitting, check what conversation, files, or account information the service will include. If anyone faces an immediate real-world threat, contact local emergency services or a crisis resource first; a chatbot report is not an emergency channel.
Quick reporting checklist
- Stop and assess the danger. Do not follow instructions that could cause injury, facilitate crime, expose private information, or create an immediate threat.
- Keep the relevant message. Save the conversation link or a screenshot for your records when doing so is safe. Capture enough surrounding context to identify the prompt and response, but do not publish sensitive material publicly.
- Open the control on that response. Look for thumbs-down, More options, Report, Report abuse, or a similar menu directly beneath or beside the message.
- Choose the closest category. Select safety, abuse, legal concern, fraud, spam, illegal content, or the equivalent option rather than sending a vague general complaint.
- Describe the risk briefly. Identify the exact response, what makes it dangerous, who could be harmed, and any relevant context.
- Review the disclosure notice. Some services attach the entire conversation and related files or connected content. Remove unrelated sensitive material when the interface gives you that choice.
- Submit once, then seek human help if needed. Official instructions describe how to send a report, not a guaranteed response time, removal, or personal follow-up.
When a platform report is not enough
If the response indicates an immediate threat to a person’s life, physical safety, or ability to stay safe, do not wait for a platform review. Move the affected person away from danger when you can do so safely and contact the emergency service or crisis support used in their location. The appropriate number and service vary by country, so use a trusted local source, workplace or school safeguarding contact, medical professional, or law-enforcement channel as appropriate.
For a non-immediate risk, reporting the message can help the provider investigate while you alert a responsible human: a parent or guardian, school safeguarding lead, employer, clinician, legal adviser, or the person being targeted. Do not test the chatbot with additional prompts if doing so could produce more harmful material or involve another person’s private data.

Report the message in the web or mobile app
OpenAI’s Help Center documents reporting a ChatGPT conversation from the message in question on the web and in the iOS and Android apps.

- Tap or click the thumbs down control beneath that response.
- Choose Select an issue.
- Select Safety or Legal concern.
- Follow the prompts to provide the requested details and submit.
Keep your explanation tied to the selected response. State whether the answer gives dangerous instructions, encourages self-harm or violence, exposes personal information, assists fraud or another crime, or creates a legal or safeguarding concern. If the danger depends on an earlier prompt, explain that connection rather than reporting only a fragment.
Use the content-reporting form for shared links and other listed content
OpenAI also provides a separate content-reporting form for conversations, shared links, GPTs, and other content types listed in its reporting flow. The shared-link guidance says a reporter can choose Report Content, describe the issue, identify its nature, and submit without signing in. Use that route when you are reviewing someone else’s shared conversation or cannot use the in-product control.
The no-sign-in option applies to the documented shared-link reporting path. Do not assume that every OpenAI report type accepts anonymous submissions or carries the same information. Read the form’s current notice before sending anything.
Do not use the retired model-feedback form
OpenAI says its old ChatGPT model-feedback web form has been deprecated. The current preferred routes are the in-product thumbs-down/report controls or the content-reporting form. If an old article or bookmark sends you to the retired form, return to the conversation and use the control attached to the response instead.

Flag an inaccurate or unsafe answer
Google’s Gemini Apps instructions use a control labeled Bad response below the response.

- Locate the Gemini response you want to flag.
- Select Bad response.
- Choose the reason that best describes the problem.
- Enter concise feedback explaining the danger or inaccuracy.
- Submit the report.
Google says you must be signed in to Gemini Apps to send this feedback. If the control is missing, confirm that you are in Gemini Apps rather than another Google product, check that you are signed in to the intended account, and look for the response’s additional options.
Report a legal issue in the web app
For a legal issue involving a Gemini web-app response, Google documents a separate route:

- Open More below the response.
- Choose Report legal issue.
- Follow the instructions shown by Google.
Use this legal route when the concern is specifically legal rather than choosing a generic feedback reason. The labels and placement can vary with product version, account type, and region.
How to report a dangerous Gemini response in Workspace apps
Gemini in Workspace uses a different abuse-reporting workflow from Gemini Apps. Google describes it for responses involving spam, fraud, illegal content, and similar abuse.
- Find the response in the Workspace application.
- Select Report abuse beside the response. If it is not visible, open More options.
- Choose the reason that fits the content.
- Click Report and complete any additional prompts.
Do not substitute the Gemini Apps Bad response steps when the response appears inside a Workspace app. The products attach different context to their reports and may present different controls.

What each documented workflow collects
Reporting a dangerous answer can send more than the single sentence you selected. Review the service’s notice and the confirmation screen before submitting.

Google’s disclosures are specific to its Gemini products. Do not apply them to OpenAI or another chatbot without a provider statement saying so.
How to write a useful explanation
A short, precise description is easier to review than a long argument. Include only information needed to understand the risk.
- Identify the output: quote a short distinctive phrase or describe where it appears in the conversation.
- Name the hazard: explain whether it could enable physical harm, self-harm, violence, fraud, illegal activity, privacy invasion, harassment, discrimination, or another concrete abuse.
- Explain the likely impact: say who could be affected and whether the instructions are immediately actionable.
- Add essential context: note the prompt, a preceding answer, an uploaded document, or a connected account that changed the meaning.
- State what you want reviewed: for example, the dangerous instructions, exposure of personal data, or failure to refuse a high-risk request.
Example wording: “The response gives step-by-step instructions for harming a named person. The earlier prompt identifies a real individual, so please review the response and the surrounding conversation for an imminent safety risk.” Adapt the wording to the actual facts; do not exaggerate or add private details that are unrelated.
Preserve evidence without spreading the harm
Save a private record
When safe, retain the conversation link or a screenshot showing the service, date, prompt, response, and any visible warning. Keep the record in a private location with access limited to people who need it for safety, safeguarding, legal, or technical review.

Minimize copied content
Do not repost dangerous instructions, personal data, images, or a victim’s identity merely to prove what happened. Quote the smallest portion that establishes the problem. If the provider’s report form automatically attaches the conversation, avoid adding a second public copy.
Check files and connected accounts
Gemini Apps may include uploaded files and images or personal content obtained through Connected Apps with feedback. Gemini in Workspace reports may include documents, emails, and other contextual material. Inspect any available inclusion controls and remove unrelated sensitive material when the interface permits it. Consider whether another person’s confidential information appears in the conversation before submitting.
If the report control is missing
- Open the menu directly attached to the response, such as More, More options, or a thumbs-down control.
- Confirm which product you are using. Gemini Apps and Gemini in Workspace have different labels and paths.
- Check whether you need to sign in. Google requires sign-in for Gemini Apps feedback; OpenAI documents a no-sign-in option for shared-link reports.
- Look in the provider’s current Help Center for “report,” “safety,” “abuse,” or “legal issue.” Interface wording can change.
- If the service offers only a general form, describe the exact response and preserve the conversation details privately. Do not invent a provider-specific route based on another chatbot’s instructions.
The reviewed official documentation does not provide a complete directory for every chatbot. In particular, it does not establish a current Microsoft Copilot reporting procedure. For an unlisted service, use its own response controls and current help center rather than copying ChatGPT or Gemini steps.

Privacy and account-safety precautions
- Use the official app or help-center form, not a link sent by an unknown person.
- Verify the account receiving the report before uploading screenshots or documents.
- Redact passwords, payment details, authentication codes, health records, and unrelated personal information when the form allows it.
- Remember that a report may create a new copy of the conversation in the provider’s systems.
- Do not share a public conversation link if it reveals a person’s identity or confidential material; use the provider’s private reporting route instead.
- Keep your own record of the submission date and confirmation, but avoid repeatedly resubmitting the same harmful content.

Common mistakes to avoid
Reporting only a general opinion
“This answer is bad” does not tell a reviewer what to inspect. Point to the response and describe the concrete harm.
Assuming every report is anonymous
OpenAI’s no-sign-in statement applies to the documented shared-link route. Google requires sign-in for Gemini Apps feedback. Other paths may attach account or conversation context.
Including every file in the conversation
More evidence is not always better. Unrelated files, emails, images, and personal data can expose people who are not part of the incident. Review inclusion controls and submit the minimum necessary context.
Waiting for the platform before protecting someone
A report is a review request, not an emergency intervention. Escalate an immediate threat through local human services first.
Following outdated interface instructions
Labels and menus change. OpenAI says its old model-feedback form is deprecated, and Google distinguishes Gemini Apps from Workspace workflows. Check the current product’s help information when a control does not match these steps.
