If you suspect a cryptocurrency scam, fake token, or account impersonating an exchange, stop communicating, preserve the messages and transaction records, secure any exposed account or wallet through an independently verified official channel, and report the incident to the agencies and platforms that fit the facts. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission lists the FTC, CFTC, SEC, FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), and the exchange used to send funds as possible reporting routes. People elsewhere should use their own national consumer-protection, cybercrime, financial-regulator, police, and platform channels.
Use only official websites, apps, and telephone numbers that you locate independently. Never disclose a recovery phrase, private key, password, or one-time code to a person who contacts you, and never pay an unexpected recovery or “unlock” fee.
Take these safety steps before you report
Your first priority is preventing another transfer or account takeover. A convincing profile, familiar logo, or urgent warning does not make a message genuine.

- Do not reply, click additional links, install software, share your screen, or follow instructions to “verify” a wallet.
- Do not send another payment to release a withdrawal, pay a tax, prove ownership, or improve the chance of recovery.
- Never provide a password, one-time passcode, private key, seed or recovery phrase, or unredacted identity document to an unsolicited contact.
- If someone claims to represent an exchange, ignore the contact and navigate independently to the exchange’s known website or app. The FBI specifically advises calling the exchange’s official phone number to verify whether there is a problem: FBI IC3 exchange-impersonation alert.
Separate urgent security work from reporting
A report records the incident; it does not replace account security. If a password, email account, exchange account, device, or wallet may still be accessible to someone else, use the provider’s official security process immediately. Keep a written timeline while you work so that changing a password or moving funds does not erase the original evidence.

Preserve evidence while it is still available
Save original material before a scammer deletes a profile, changes a domain, or edits a message. Keep copies in a safe location and avoid altering screenshots in a way that removes dates, usernames, URLs, or surrounding context. Do not revisit a suspicious website on a device that may be compromised merely to collect a screenshot.

The FBI asks for transaction details plus information about how the victim met the person, communication platforms, web domains, phone numbers, identifiers, and the timeline. If you cannot obtain transaction data, report anyway and provide everything you do have. Guidance is available from the FBI IC3 cryptocurrency page and the FBI’s cryptocurrency investment fraud page.
Secure an exposed account or wallet
If an exchange account or email may be compromised
- Open the exchange and email provider by typing a known address, using a saved official app, or finding the provider’s site through a trusted, independent source. Do not use a link in the suspicious message.
- Change the password from the official security page, sign out other sessions if that option exists, and enable the provider’s strongest available multifactor method.
- Contact the exchange through its in-app or independently verified support route. Tell it which account, withdrawal, deposit, or address is involved and provide the transaction identifiers.
- Secure the email account and any other account that reused the exposed password. Check forwarding rules, recovery addresses, and unfamiliar devices.
If a wallet recovery phrase or private key was exposed
Treat the wallet as compromised. Follow the wallet provider’s official instructions; when appropriate, move remaining assets to a newly created wallet whose recovery phrase has not been exposed. Do not type a recovery phrase into a website, form, chat, or “validation” tool. If you suspect a malicious token approval, review or revoke it only through a wallet interface or blockchain explorer that you independently trust and whose current instructions you have verified. Do not connect the wallet to an approval checker recommended by an unsolicited helper.

If a device may have been accessed
Disconnect it from sensitive accounts until you can obtain trusted technical help. Preserve relevant files before resetting anything, and change credentials from a known-clean device. Do not install remote-access software at the direction of a caller claiming to be support.
Where to report in the United States
The FTC’s consumer guidance lists the channels below for cryptocurrency fraud or suspicious activity. The right combination depends on what happened; filing with every agency is not automatically necessary.

The FTC explains these options at What To Know About Cryptocurrency and Scams. An IC3 complaint may be referred to law-enforcement or partner agencies, but the portal does not promise an individual investigation or result. Read its information-use notice before submitting.

How to file a report safely
- Finish your evidence record. Attach or describe the transaction IDs, addresses, dates, amounts, account details, contact identifiers, URLs, screenshots, and timeline you preserved. Redact passwords, private keys, recovery phrases, one-time codes, and unnecessary identity numbers.
- Choose channels based on jurisdiction and purpose. For a U.S. case, start with the FTC list above and add IC3, the relevant financial regulator, and the exchange when their roles fit the facts. Note every report number in your timeline.
- Use the official portal you independently located. The IC3 complaint form is at complaint.ic3.gov. Never submit through a link supplied by the alleged scammer or by a person offering to recover your money.
- Describe what happened in chronological language. State what you were promised, what instructions you followed, which transfers or approvals occurred, when you discovered the deception, and what security actions you have taken. Distinguish facts you saw from assumptions about the person’s identity.
- Report the hosting account or website. Use the platform’s built-in reporting process from its official app or independently verified website. Include the exact profile handle, profile URL, message URL, domain, token contract address, and screenshots. Menus change, so rely on the platform’s current interface rather than an old click path.
- Keep confirmations and monitor accounts. Save submission receipts and support-ticket numbers. Continue checking the affected exchange, email, and wallet for unauthorized activity using trusted access routes.
The FBI’s August 24, 2023 victim guidance states: “If you believe you or someone you know may be a victim of a cryptocurrency scam, immediately submit a report to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at www.ic3.gov or contact your local FBI Field Office and provide as much transaction information as possible.” This is reporting guidance, not a promise that funds will be returned.

Reporting a fake or impersonation token
An impersonation token can copy a known project’s name, ticker, logo, website language, or promotional claims. A familiar-looking symbol is not proof of an official token. Preserve the contract address, the network, the page where you saw it, and the communication that promoted it. The FBI Denver Field Office has issued a specific warning about cryptocurrency token impersonation scams and directs victims to report to IC3: FBI Denver token-impersonation warning.
There is no universal authority that can erase a token from a decentralized blockchain. Reporting can still document the fraud, alert a hosting service or listing site, and give investigators usable identifiers. Do not interact with the contract, approve a transaction, or connect a wallet just to test whether the token is genuine.

Fake exchange or project account
Record the exact display name, handle, profile URL, message URL, platform, claimed company, telephone number, and email address. Report the account through the platform and notify the real exchange or project using its independently verified support route. Do not call a number supplied in the impersonator’s message.
Suspicious website or phishing page
Record the full domain and page URL from existing messages, browser history, or screenshots. If the site may have installed malware or captured credentials, do not return to it merely to gather more proof. Use a known-clean device or trusted technical professional for any additional examination.
Reporting outside the United States
Agency names, legal jurisdiction, and available portals differ by country. Do not apply the U.S. FTC, CFTC, SEC, and IC3 list as a worldwide rule. Consult your national consumer-protection authority, cybercrime or police service, financial regulator, and the platform or exchange involved. State or provincial police may also have a local intake route.

Singapore example
Singapore-specific guidance illustrates the local approach: the Singapore Police Force advises contacting the cryptocurrency platform, reporting to the police, and reporting fraudulent cryptocurrency phishing websites to the Cyber Security Agency’s SingCERT. Its advisory, dated July 3, 2025, is at Police Advisory on Scams Involving the Impersonation of Cryptocurrency Platforms. Readers in other countries should locate equivalent official services rather than assuming SingCERT or the U.S. portals handle their case.
What a report can—and cannot—do
IC3 is an intake and analysis center. Information submitted through its complaint process may be used and shared with law-enforcement or partner agencies. The receiving agency or platform decides what action, if any, is possible. A blockchain transfer may be irreversible, and a report is not a mechanism that automatically identifies a scammer, reverses a transfer, freezes a wallet, removes a token, or reimburses a victim.
Reports are still worthwhile when they contain no direct financial loss. A fake account, attempted phishing message, or impersonation token can provide identifiers that help connect incidents. The FBI’s 2023 report says IC3 received more than 69,000 complaints from the public about financial fraud involving cryptocurrency in 2023. Protect yourself from recovery scams
After a loss, victims are often contacted by someone claiming to be a lawyer, investigator, exchange employee, hacker, or government agent who says a payment is needed for tracing, taxes, an unlock, insurance, or a final transfer. Treat an unexpected recovery offer as a new scam risk.
- Do not pay an upfront fee or send additional cryptocurrency.
- Do not grant remote access, share a recovery phrase, or upload identity documents to an unsolicited service.
- Verify any claimed organization through contact details you find independently, not through the message.
- Add the new contact details and payment demand to your existing evidence record and report them through the same appropriate channels.
FBI and IC3 warnings explain that IC3 does not work with outside law firms or cryptocurrency services to recover funds. No legitimate agency can guarantee a refund in exchange for a fee. See the IC3 homepage and reporting information for official notices.
When to involve local police or emergency services
For an online fraud with no immediate physical danger, preserve evidence and use the relevant agency and platform portals. If there is an immediate threat to your safety, extortion involving physical harm, or another emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number. The IC3 site gives that instruction for immediate danger. Bring your timeline and report references when speaking with local police; do not put secret credentials in a public report.
