A character’s death does not create a special replay button in World of Warcraft. To replay a completed quest, use Party Sync with a player whose character still has that quest unfinished. If the quest is eligible, it appears temporarily as a Replay Quest while the party is synchronized. Some story-critical quests are excluded, so a quest connected to a dead character cannot always be replayed.
What the character’s death changes—and what it does not
World of Warcraft treats a quest as completed in your character’s quest history even when its main character later dies in the story. The death itself is not documented as an unlock, exception, or reset condition. Your ability to revisit the quest depends on two things: whether Blizzard allows that quest to be replayed and whether another party member has it in an incomplete state.
That distinction matters for quests involving a fallen faction leader, companion, villain, or quest giver. You may be able to experience the earlier quest again through Party Sync, but the game does not roll your character’s permanent quest history back. You also cannot force an excluded story quest to appear simply because its associated character is no longer alive.

Blizzard’s documented method is Party Sync. It allows a player who has already completed certain quests to replay them alongside a friend who has not completed them. The friend’s unfinished quest provides the quest state that the party temporarily synchronizes to.
#1 Best Overall
- Great product!
What you need before starting
- A second player whose character still has the target quest incomplete.
- Both characters in the same party.
- Access to the Map & Quest Log, opened with M by default.
- A quest that Blizzard has marked as eligible for replay.
The other player does not need to be replaying the quest. Their incomplete state is what lets the party qualify for the synchronized version. Before arranging a session, identify the exact quest rather than only the zone or chapter. A friend may have reached the same area but already turned in the particular mission you need, which will not provide the state Party Sync requires.
Party Sync setup, step by step
- Invite the player who still has the quest. Make sure that character has not completed the specific quest you want to revisit. If the quest is absent from their log, they cannot provide the required unfinished state.
- Open the Map & Quest Log. Press M, or use the game’s menu to open the map and quest interface.
- Select “Start Party Sync.” The control is in the lower-right corner of the Map & Quest Log.
- Have every party member accept the confirmation dialog. Synchronization does not begin until the members accept the prompt.
- Check the quest tracker while synced. Eligible quests that you previously completed can be offered as Replay Quests. Accept the replay version from the tracker or the available quest interaction.
Party Sync changes the party’s effective quest state only for the duration of the session. It does not delete your completion record, alter the other player’s progress, or permanently reopen the quest in your log. If you are organizing a replay for a specific cinematic or conversation, agree on that goal before starting: the temporary quest can disappear as soon as synchronization ends.
How to tell whether the quest can be replayed
The interface uses quest markers to show whether the current party qualifies. A quest identified as a Replay Quest is one you have completed before but can temporarily experience again under the active synchronization.
- Replay Quest marker: the quest is available to accept in the synchronized state.
- Grey icon: the group does not qualify at that moment. Check that the friend has the quest unfinished and that every member accepted the sync confirmation.
- No replay icon: the quest cannot be replayed through the current Party Sync session. This can indicate that Blizzard excludes it, rather than a problem with your party.
If the quest is not shown as replayable, changing the party leader or repeatedly abandoning and reacquiring unrelated quests will not create an eligibility flag. Verify the quest state first, then treat a missing marker as a possible design restriction. A grey marker and no marker carry different practical implications: the former points you toward the party’s current qualification, while the latter may mean the quest is outside the feature entirely.
Party Sync replay rules and limits
| Rule | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Replay is temporary | The replay quest disappears when Party Sync ends. It is not restored to your permanent quest log. |
| Rewards are limited | Blizzard says replay rewards can be earned once per day, so repeating the same quest in one day does not provide unlimited reward payouts. |
| Repeatable quests are excluded | Dailies and World Quests cannot be replayed through this feature. |
| Some story quests are excluded | Quests with story implications are evaluated case by case and may deliberately lack a replay option. |
| Eligibility follows party state | The friend’s incomplete quest and the group’s accepted sync status determine whether the replay appears. |
The once-per-day rule applies to replay rewards, not to a permanent reset of your character’s story progression. A successful replay therefore lets you see and play the content again without making the original completion state disappear. If your purpose is dialogue, objectives, locations, or a cinematic, the reward limit does not prevent you from using the feature for that viewing; it only prevents unlimited reward payouts.
Why an important story quest may be unavailable
Blizzard excludes some quests that could create contradictions if the game presented them as repeatable. A quest may depict a major political change, a character’s death, a permanent world-state transition, or another event with consequences beyond the local objective. Party Sync does not override those exclusions.
This is why two quests from the same campaign can behave differently. A routine escort or side objective may appear as a Replay Quest, while the cinematic mission that establishes a character’s death may have no replay marker at all. The deciding factor is the quest’s replay policy, not whether the character is alive on your current character. Seeing a later death in the story does not automatically classify every earlier mission involving that character as replayable or non-replayable.
Troubleshooting a missing Replay Quest
The friend completed the quest earlier
Party Sync needs an unfinished copy of the quest in the other player’s state. Ask a player who has not completed it, or use another character that has not reached that point in the story. A friend who has already turned it in cannot supply the required state.
Rank #2
The group accepted sync, but the icon is grey
Confirm that every member accepted the dialog, that the intended player is still in the party, and that the target quest is present and incomplete in that player’s quest log. Leave and restart Party Sync only after checking those conditions; otherwise the same grey state will return.
The quest has no icon at all
A missing icon generally means the quest is not available as a replay under that session. Check whether it is a daily or World Quest, both of which are outside this feature. If it is a major story mission, it may be one of the quests excluded because of its story implications.
The replay vanished
That is expected when Party Sync ends. Start a new synchronized session with the eligible friend if you need to experience the quest again. Your original completion remains intact, and the replay does not become a permanent entry.
You expected a second full reward
Replay rewards are restricted to once per day. The quest can still be useful for seeing dialogue, objectives, locations, or cinematics again, but it is not an unlimited farming method.
Can you reset completed quests on your main character?
Party Sync is not a reset tool. It temporarily presents eligible content against another player’s quest state while leaving your completed-quest history unchanged. There is no documented general option to erase a main character’s quest completion flags and replay an entire campaign from the beginning.
Abandoning a quest you currently hold is different from undoing a quest you completed in the past. If the target mission is already marked complete, removing other quests from your log will not restore it. The practical choices are to use Party Sync for an eligible individual quest or use a separate story experience designed for broader replay.
Revisiting an entire story arc instead of one quest
If your goal is to see a dead character’s storyline from the beginning, a single-quest replay may be too narrow. Blizzard also provides experiences that recap or replay larger portions of the game, but they do not rewrite the original character’s completed-quest history.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Returning Player Catch Up Experience
Blizzard’s returning-player guide describes a Catch Up Experience that can be started from character selection or from the Adventure Guide’s Tutorials tab. During the guided sequence, existing quests are hidden so the player can concentrate on reacclimating instead of sorting through the normal quest log.
The same guide describes a War Within recap that runs through the expansion’s story and presents key cinematics. This is useful when you want the narrative context around a character’s fate without needing the original quest to become active again. It is a guided recap and sequence, not a command that clears completed quests. Because existing quests are hidden during the catch-up sequence, do not mistake that temporary presentation change for deletion or a permanent alteration of your quest log.
Legion Remix
Legion Remix is a separate, time-limited mode built to let players revisit Legion at an accelerated pace. Its included content covers Legion Campaign quests, local stories, World Quests, Class Order Hall campaigns, and Artifact questlines.
Blizzard says a World of Warcraft subscription or game time is required to access the mode. Because it is seasonal, availability depends on whether the event is running. Legion Remix therefore works as a broad replay environment for Legion material, not as a permanent switch that reopens those quests on a retail character. It is the better fit when you want to move through a substantial Legion storyline again, while Party Sync is the narrower choice for one completed mission.

Choosing the right method
| Method | Best for | Another player required? | How long it lasts | Important restriction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Party Sync Replay Quest | One or several eligible completed quests | Yes; the partner must have the quest incomplete | Only while Party Sync is active | Story-impacting quests may be excluded; replay rewards are once per day |
| Returning Player Catch Up / War Within recap | Reacclimating and reviewing a guided story sequence | No party requirement is stated | Limited to the catch-up or recap experience | Existing quests are hidden during the guided sequence; it does not reset the quest log |
| Legion Remix | Replaying a broad set of Legion campaigns and related content | No party requirement is stated | Only while the seasonal mode is available | Requires a World of Warcraft subscription or game time |
Use Party Sync when you need the original quest’s playable objectives and a friend can provide the unfinished state. Use the returning-player tools when seeing the sequence and cinematics matters more than replaying every objective. Choose Legion Remix only for Legion content and only while that limited mode is available. None of the three methods permanently changes a completed-quest flag on your main character.
Examples of common situations
You completed a side quest before the NPC died
Ask a friend who still has the side quest, start Party Sync, and look for the Replay Quest marker. If it appears, you can run the quest again even though the NPC’s later death remains part of your character’s established story.
You want to replay the mission that caused the death
Try the same Party Sync procedure, but expect a different result. A mission with major story consequences may be excluded, in which case it will not receive a replay marker. The death does not grant an exception.
You want to see the whole character arc on your own
Party Sync is not ideal if no second player has the required quest. Check whether the returning-player recap covers the relevant expansion. For Legion material, Legion Remix may provide a larger playable route when the seasonal mode is active.
You want to repeat the quest for loot
Verify the daily reward limit before organizing a replay session. The feature is primarily a way to experience eligible content with friends; it is not designed for unlimited repeat rewards.

A practical decision checklist
- Need one completed quest? Find a player who still has it and use Party Sync.
- Quest connected to a major death or permanent event? Check for a Replay Quest marker, but be prepared for a story-based exclusion.
- No marker? Rule out dailies, World Quests, an already-completed partner quest, and an unaccepted sync prompt.
- Want a complete narrative review? Use the returning-player catch-up or recap experience when it covers the expansion you need.
- Want broad Legion replay? Use Legion Remix only during its availability window and with the required game access.
- Want to erase your main’s history? None of these methods performs a permanent quest reset.
Frequently asked questions
How do I replay a WoW quest I already completed?
Join a party with someone who has not completed the quest, open the Map & Quest Log, choose Start Party Sync, and have everyone accept the confirmation. If Blizzard permits that quest, it appears as a Replay Quest during the sync.
Can I redo a quest after the NPC dies?
Possibly, but the NPC’s death is not what enables replay. The quest must be eligible, and another player must still have it incomplete. A story-impacting quest can remain unavailable even when its NPC is dead.
Can Party Sync let me replay old quests?
Yes, for certain completed quests. Replay quests are temporary, disappear when Party Sync ends, and provide replay rewards only once per day. Dailies and World Quests are not eligible through this feature.
What does a grey quest icon mean?
It means the party does not qualify at that moment. Check the friend’s incomplete quest and make sure every party member accepted the synchronization prompt.
What if there is no replay icon?
The quest may be excluded from Party Sync, especially if it has major story implications. It may also be a daily or World Quest, which the feature does not replay.
Can I reset completed quests on my main?
No documented general reset removes completed-quest flags. Party Sync only presents eligible content temporarily against another player’s state.
Is there a solo way to revisit a larger story?
The Returning Player Catch Up Experience and its War Within recap can provide a guided sequence and key cinematics without a party requirement being stated. They are recaps or designed experiences, not resets of the normal quest log.

Bottom line for a dead character’s questline
A dead character does not make a World of Warcraft quest automatically replayable. Party Sync is the official route for eligible completed quests: synchronize with a friend who has the quest unfinished, accept the prompts, and look for the Replay Quest marker. The replay ends with Party Sync, rewards are limited to once per day, and some story-impacting missions are intentionally omitted. For a larger narrative revisit, use the returning-player recap tools or the time-limited Legion Remix experience rather than trying to reset your main character’s completed-quest record.
