The Galaxy SmartTag2 uses a replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery. What the SmartTag2 battery replacement involves
Unlike a rechargeable accessory, the Galaxy SmartTag2 runs on one replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery. Samsung Japan estimates about 500 days of typical use and about 700 days in power-saving mode (Samsung Japan, 2024). Those are estimates, not a guaranteed interval: usage patterns and operating conditions can shorten or extend the time. A tag used frequently for detection may not match the estimate of a lightly used tag, so use the reported battery condition and the tag’s behavior as practical indicators rather than treating a calendar date as a deadline.
The battery sits in a removable tray on the back of the tag. You do not need to open the tag housing. Samsung’s procedure uses the supplied ejection pin; a small clip can also be used. Before you start
- Replacement: one CR2032 battery. Samsung’s instructions do not establish a preferred brand, capacity, price, shelf life, or performance ranking.
- Tool: the supplied tray-ejection pin or a small clip. The pin is convenient but is not a separate required accessory.
- Phone and app: keep the phone close to the tag. SmartThings is Samsung’s documented route for adding and managing the tracker.
- Orientation: identify the + marking in the tag before inserting the new cell. The positive terminal must align with that mark.
- Workspace: use a clean, stable surface so the small tray and coin cell do not fall away while you work.
Handle the tray gently. A tray that is only partly inserted, upside down, or carrying a reversed battery can leave the tag apparently dead even when the cell is new. Do not substitute a different coin-cell designation simply because it looks similar. If the supplied pin is unavailable, Samsung’s guidance allows a small clip, but the tool should be used carefully and without twisting the tray.
How to replace a Galaxy SmartTag2 battery
- Find the tray opening. Turn the SmartTag2 over and locate the small battery-tray hole on the back.
- Release the tray. Insert the supplied ejection pin or a small clip into the hole. Apply controlled pressure and gently pull the tray out; do not force or twist it.
- Remove the spent cell. Take the old CR2032 out of the tray.
- Install the new CR2032. Place the replacement cell in the tray with its positive terminal aligned to the tag’s + marking. Incorrect orientation can prevent operation.
- Return the tray. Slide the tray straight back into its slot until it is fully seated. Do not leave it partially engaged or insert it upside down.
- Listen and test. Samsung Gulf support says, “The SmartTag 2 will emit a sound immediately after insertion.” Treat that as the documented audible response to insertion, not as a requirement to hear a sound after every ordinary battery change. Test the tag in SmartThings after the tray is secure.
If the tag does not respond after step 5, remove the tray and repeat the installation. Recheck both the battery orientation and the direction in which the tray enters the tag before moving to reset steps. Make sure the cell lies flat in the tray and that no part of the tray is protruding from the body.
The insertion sound is useful evidence that the tag reacted to the tray and battery, but silence alone does not identify the cause. A reversed cell, an incompletely seated tray, a depleted replacement, or a tag that needs restarting can produce similar symptoms. Work through the physical checks before assuming the device has a permanent fault.

1. Recheck the cell and tray
- Confirm that the replacement is a CR2032, not another coin-cell designation.
- Confirm that the positive side matches the + marking.
- Check that the tray is not upside down and is pushed completely into the tag.
- Remove and reinsert the battery once to restart the tag, then test it again while it is close to the phone.
These checks address the most common post-replacement failure: the tag has power available, but the cell or tray is not making the expected contact. If a second installation produces the same result, keep the sequence deliberate rather than repeatedly forcing the tray. Excessive pressure can damage a small plastic tray or its opening.
2. Use the SmartTag2 force-restart sequence
When a normal removal and reinsertion does not restore a frozen or silent tag, Samsung documents a SmartTag2-specific force restart:
- Pull the battery tray out.
- Press and release the SmartTag2 button once.
- Press the button again and keep it pressed while reinserting the battery tray.
- Continue holding the button for more than seven seconds, until the tag produces the reset sound.
Keep the sequence in that order. Pressing the button only after the tray is already seated does not follow Samsung’s force-restart instructions. The important timing detail is holding the button for more than seven seconds while the tray is being reinserted. If the tag remains unresponsive after the sequence and a correctly oriented CR2032, the issue may not be the battery itself; proceed to Samsung support rather than repeatedly forcing the tray.
A force restart is a recovery step for an unresponsive SmartTag2. It should not be confused with a guarantee that every account, app, Bluetooth, or location issue has been cleared. Once the tag produces the reset sound, test it nearby and then return to SmartThings setup if it is no longer registered.

A battery change does not automatically register the tag with a phone. Pairing is completed through SmartThings, and the tag should remain nearby during onboarding. A tag can be powered and audible yet still need to be added through the app.
Start or retry setup in SmartThings
- Open SmartThings on the phone. If an update is offered, install the current app version available for your device.
- Keep the powered SmartTag2 close to the phone. Begin with the tag within easy reach rather than testing from another room.
- Wait for the device-found pop-up. If it appears, follow the prompts shown in SmartThings.
- If no pop-up appears, use SmartThings’ add-device controls, choose the tag or tracker category, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If setup still fails, return to the battery and tray checks, perform the SmartTag2 force restart if necessary, and retry setup with the tag nearby.
Samsung Japan notes that first pairing may not proceed smoothly in some surrounding environments and recommends trying the pairing process again. A retry is a practical diagnostic step, not a guarantee that every connection failure will disappear. If the tag responds locally but the first attempt fails, repeat the nearby SmartThings process before concluding that the hardware is defective.

When a device-found prompt is missing, do not wait indefinitely for the pop-up. The documented alternative is to open SmartThings’ add-device controls and select the appropriate tag or tracker path. The exact labels can vary with phone software and region, so follow the controls displayed in the current app.
Separate a dead tag from a discovery problem
If the tag gives no response and SmartThings cannot discover it, treat power, orientation, tray seating, and the force-restart sequence as the first branch. If the tag reacts but does not appear in SmartThings, focus on nearby setup and the app’s add-device controls. Repeating an app search cannot fix a tag that is not powered, while reinstalling the battery is unnecessary when the tag is already responding normally.

Hearing the tag or getting a response from its button indicates that it is active, but it does not prove that the current phone has completed onboarding. Location estimation depends on the surrounding signal environment, so a paired tag may not report an exact position in every setting.
If the tag works beside the phone but appears unreliable at a distance, keep the symptom categorized as detection or location accuracy rather than battery failure. If it does not respond even at close range, return to the battery, tray, and restart branch.
