Yes. Fairbuds 2 batteries are designed to be replaced by the owner: each earbud has a replaceable 45 mAh cell, and the charging case has a replaceable 500 mAh battery. For an earbud, remove the silicone ring, open its rotating battery tray, install the supported AUFBAT-1 / LIR1054 cell with the polarity aligned, close the tray until it clicks, and refit the ring. The case uses a separate procedure: remove one bottom screw, take out the case core, replace the battery at the bottom of that core, and reassemble it.
Disconnect charging cables first, work on a flat and stable surface, keep lithium-ion cells away from damage and excessive heat, and recycle the old battery through a local battery or electronic-waste collection point. Do not substitute an unverified battery type.
What you need before opening Fairbuds 2
Set up a clean, level work surface with enough light to see the battery tray and polarity marks. The earbuds must not be charging and must not be connected to a cable. Remove them from any charging connection before you begin. A fingernail is sufficient for removing the silicone ring; a suitable non-damaging prying tool can also be used if needed.

Temperature and charging limits
The Fairbuds 2 health and safety guidance gives an operating range of -10 °C to +40 °C. Do not charge the battery below 0 °C or above +40 °C. If the earbud or cell is unusually hot, swollen, leaking, or visibly damaged, stop the repair and keep it away from heat and ignition sources rather than attempting to install it.

Fairphone’s FAQ identifies the earbud spare part as an LIR1054 and says the company aims to support Fairbuds spare parts until the end of 2030. The official Fairbuds 2 Battery Replacement kit is listed at €9.95, while the charging-case battery replacement is listed at €12.95. Those are the prices shown in Fairphone product information accessed on 18 October 2026; regional taxes, delivery charges, and availability can change.
Choose the correct Fairbuds 2 earbud battery
Use the supported AUFBAT-1 / LIR1054 battery or the official Fairbuds 2 replacement kit. The safety guide explicitly warns that replacing the battery with an incorrect type creates an explosion risk and may endanger the device and your health. A cell that looks similar may still have the wrong chemistry, dimensions, terminals, or discharge characteristics.
The official kit is the simplest option because it is identified for Fairbuds 2 and includes two new silicone rings. The rings help protect the battery compartment after reassembly and can lose elasticity or become damaged when repeatedly removed. Fairphone’s official material does not validate generic third-party cells, so a marketplace listing that merely says a battery is compatible is not proof of suitability.

Do not buy a generic coin cell or a different lithium battery simply because its dimensions appear close. The supported designation is the deciding specification, not the seller’s photograph or a similar capacity rating.
Replace a Fairbuds 2 earbud battery: step by step
1. Disconnect and stabilize the earbud
Make sure the earbud is not in the charging case, not connected to a charging cable, and not being charged. Place it on a flat, stable surface with the outer face accessible. A stable surface prevents the small tray and battery from slipping while you work.

2. Remove the silicone ring
Use a fingernail or a suitable prying tool to lift the silicone ring. Pull the ring up and over the outer part of the earbud, working gently so it is not overstretched or torn. Put it somewhere clean while the battery compartment is open.
The ring is more than a cosmetic cover: it helps restore the earbud’s protection after the repair. If it is stretched, split, or cannot sit flat afterward, replace it rather than forcing it into place.
3. Open the rotating battery tray
Locate the rotating battery tray and the plus and minus indicators printed near it. Gently rotate or open the tray. It is hinged and does not open completely, so do not try to force it past its normal travel.
Before removing the old cell, note how its positive and negative ends line up with the tray marks. That orientation is the reference for inserting the replacement.
4. Remove the old cell
Lift the old battery out without puncturing or deforming it. Keep the cell away from keys, loose screws, heat, and other objects that could short or damage it. If it is stuck, stop and reassess rather than prying aggressively against the cell.

Place the AUFBAT-1 / LIR1054 replacement in the tray with its polarity aligned to the plus and minus markings. The battery should sit in the intended position without force. Do not push a battery into the earbud while the tray is open, and do not improvise with a different type.

6. Clean the contact area before closing
Make sure the battery and your fingers are clean and free from grease or dust. Contamination can reduce connection reliability. Avoid applying liquids or abrasive cleaners inside the earbud; the official instruction is to keep the contact surfaces clean, not to wet them.
7. Close the tray until it clicks
Rotate the tray back into its closed position and press gently until it clicks shut. A tray that does not click, sits proud of the housing, or requires excessive force is a sign to reopen it and check the battery’s orientation and seating.
8. Restore the silicone ring seal
Fit the silicone ring back over the earbud. Align its raised outer lip correctly and work around the edge until it sits evenly in its groove. Do not leave a section folded under or stretched over the housing, because the ring’s correct position restores the earbud’s intended protection.

9. Restart and check the earbud
Restart the earbud by placing it in the charging case and closing and reopening the lid. Alternatively, press the earbud touch control for three seconds. Test the earbud only after the tray is fully closed and the silicone ring is seated.
10. Recycle the removed battery
Take the old lithium-ion cell to a local battery or electronic-waste collection point. Do not put it in household rubbish. Keep it protected from damage while transporting it and follow the collection point’s instructions for loose lithium batteries.
Replace the Fairbuds 2 charging-case battery
The charging-case battery is a separate repair from the earbud cell. Fairphone’s case guide describes a bottom screw securing the case cover and a removable case core; the battery is located at the bottom of that core.

Preparation
Disconnect every cable and place the empty case on a stable, flat surface. Work slowly over a clear area so the small screw cannot roll away. Use a screwdriver that fits the bottom screw securely; the official instructions identify the screw but do not specify a size in the supplied material.

- Remove the screw on the bottom of the charging case and set it aside in a safe place.
- Open the case cover as directed by the case guide.
- Take the charging-case core out of the outer shell.
- Find the battery at the bottom of the core and remove the old battery without puncturing or damaging it.
- Insert the replacement charging-case battery in the same intended position, ensuring it is seated rather than pinched by the core.
- Put the core back into the case shell.
- Close the cover and reinstall the bottom screw, tightening it securely without forcing it.
Recycle the removed case battery through the same local battery or electronic-waste channel used for the earbud cell. If the core, cover, screw, or battery does not align during reassembly, stop and inspect the fit instead of tightening against resistance.

The earbud does not start
- Confirm the tray is fully closed and clicked into place.
- Reopen the tray and compare the battery orientation with the plus and minus indicators.
- Check that the supported AUFBAT-1 / LIR1054 cell is being used, rather than a visually similar battery.
- Make sure grease or dust is not contaminating the contacts.
- Close and reopen the charging-case lid, or hold the touch control for three seconds to restart the earbud.
The battery connection is intermittent
An intermittent connection can result from contamination, a cell that is not seated correctly, or a tray that has not reached its clicked position. Remove the silicone ring, open the tray gently, clean your hands and the battery surface, reseat the cell against the polarity marks, and close the tray again. Never compensate for a poor fit by bending the battery or forcing the tray.
The silicone ring will not sit correctly
Remove it and inspect the raised outer lip for a fold or twist. Refit the lip evenly around the earbud. If the ring is torn, permanently stretched, or missing, use a replacement ring; the official earbud kit includes two.
The case will not close after its battery replacement
Remove the screw again and check that the core is fully seated in the shell and that the battery is not trapped between the core and cover. The cover should close before the screw is tightened. Do not use the screw to pull a misaligned core into place.

Stop using it immediately. Do not puncture, squeeze, charge, or expose it to excessive heat. Move it only as recommended by your local battery-waste service and contact the seller or manufacturer for safe handling instructions.

Official kit versus an independently sourced cell
An independently sourced battery is only a reasonable choice if its exact identity, chemistry, dimensions, terminals, and polarity are verified against AUFBAT-1 / LIR1054. The official guidance does not approve generic alternatives, so the burden of checking fit and safety remains with the buyer. A low price does not offset the risk of a wrong cell damaging the earbud or creating a safety hazard.
The official kit also solves a secondary maintenance problem by supplying replacement silicone rings. Those rings are handled during every earbud battery repair and are part of the protection around the compartment. If you purchase a bare cell, you may still need rings separately, and their availability and compatibility are not established in the supplied official information.
How to reduce problems during future battery changes
- Keep the work surface clean before opening either compartment.
- Handle the silicone ring by its edges and avoid overstretching it.
- Record the original battery orientation before lifting the cell out.
- Use only the supported AUFBAT-1 / LIR1054 earbud battery and the specified charging-case replacement.
