What the job actually involves
This is a pad replacement, not a full earcup or driver repair. The pad plate is held to the housing by six small claws. The tool releases those attachment points, after which the pad lifts away. The driver is immediately exposed, so the most important control is keeping the tool, fingers, dust and fabric away from it. Installation reverses the process: orient the replacement, engage its two pegs with the housing holes, then seat all six claws on their hooks.
Allow enough time to work around the entire perimeter instead of trying to pull one side free. A claw that remains engaged can make the pad appear stuck or cause it to come off at an angle. Slow, even pressure is safer than a single hard pry.
Gather the correct parts and tool
Sony’s documented self-service procedure calls for two things that are sold separately:
- Replacement WH-1000XM5 earpads. Confirm that the package explicitly supports the WH-1000XM5 and supplies the correct left and right orientation.

Prepare the headphones before opening an earcup

- Work with the earcup facing upward. You need to see the pad plate and keep loose debris away from the exposed driver once the pad is removed.
- Plan to handle the plate, not the cushion. Sony warns: “Do not pull the earpad cushion portion of the earpad. This may cause damage to the earpad.” The cushion is not the release point.
The procedure concerns the removable pad and its retaining claws. Do not remove unrelated screws, pry into the driver assembly or touch internal headphone parts. Keep the two sides separate if you are replacing one pad at a time, and note the L/R mark before you remove the old one so the orientation is clear.
Remove the old WH-1000XM5 ear pad
1. Hold the housing plate steady
Place one hand on the earcup housing plate so it does not flex while you release the pad. Look around the inner perimeter of the pad to locate the retaining points. Sony identifies six claws per earpad; they attach to hooks in the housing.
2. Release the six claws around the perimeter
Insert Sony’s disassembly tool carefully between the earpad plate and the claws. Work around the edge, releasing one retaining point at a time. Keep the tool against the plate and claw area rather than driving it toward the center of the earcup.

Use controlled pressure. If a claw does not release, reposition the tool and continue around the perimeter instead of levering harder in one spot. Pulling on the cushion can tear or deform it, and excessive force can damage the housing or retaining features.
3. Lift the pad away only after the claws release
Once the six claws are free, lift the old earpad away from the housing. Do not tug on a pad that is still attached at one or more points; return to the edge and release the remaining claw or claws. If the pad comes free unevenly, support the plate and keep working around the edge rather than twisting the cushion.
4. Protect the exposed driver
With the pad removed, the driver is exposed. Sony specifically instructs you not to touch it. Keep fingers, the tool, fabric, dust and other objects away from the driver opening. If the pad will not come off cleanly or a retaining part appears damaged, stop and use an Authorized Service Center rather than continuing with force.

Inspect the material behind the earpad after removal. Sony’s UK guidance says that the cushioning material must remain correctly positioned. If it has come loose or is sitting incorrectly, noise cancellation may not work well and an echo may occur.
Correct only the position of that cushioning material, working gently and avoiding the exposed driver and other internal parts. Do not add adhesive, cut the material or substitute another layer. If it is torn, missing or cannot be placed correctly without touching internal components, have the headphones serviced.
Install the replacement pad
1. Identify the correct side
Find the L or R mark on the replacement pad. Sony’s UK instructions also refer to uneven features that help distinguish the pad’s orientation. Match those marks and features to the corresponding left or right earcup before pressing anything into place.
2. Align the two pegs with the housing holes
On the back of the replacement pad are two pegs. Position them over the two small holes in the housing block. The pad should sit in the correct orientation with the pegs lined up; do not try to force the claws to engage while the pegs are misaligned.
3. Press the pad into the hooks
With the L/R orientation and pegs aligned, press the pad into the housing around its perimeter. The six claws should attach to the hooks and click into place. Apply even, deliberate pressure rather than squeezing one small area aggressively. A click at one point does not prove that all six claws are engaged, so continue around the full perimeter.

4. Remove wrinkles from the pad edge
Sony says to lift the inner lower side of the pad gently and work around its sides to remove wrinkles. Keep this movement limited to the pad material; do not lift far enough to disturb the cushioning layer or expose yourself to the driver.
5. Perform the security check
Gently pull the installed pad to confirm that it is secure. It should remain attached rather than lifting away from the housing. If it moves, stop using the headphones, remove and reseat the pad, and repeat the orientation, peg and claw checks.
Post-installation checks and troubleshooting
The pad will not release
- Confirm that you are working between the pad plate and the retaining claws, not pulling the cushion.
- Continue around the perimeter to find a claw that remains engaged.
- Reduce force and reposition the disassembly tool. Sony’s six-claw design requires releasing the attachment points rather than prying one side far away from the housing.
- If the housing or a claw begins to deform, stop and contact an Authorized Service Center.
The pad comes off unevenly
One or more claws may still be attached. Set the pad back against the housing, support the plate and work around the edge until the remaining attachment points release. Do not twist the pad by its cushion.

- Check that you are using the correct L/R pad.
- Match the two pegs to the two small housing holes.
- Inspect the cushioning material for displacement that could hold the pad away from the housing.
- Press around the perimeter so each claw can engage its hook.
The pad feels loose after installation
Do not rely on normal use to seat it. Gently pull the pad as Sony directs; if it shifts, remove and reinstall it with the marks, uneven features, pegs and six claws aligned. A pad that still will not secure should be handled by a service center.
Noise cancellation is weaker or an echo appears
Recheck the cushioning material behind the pad. Sony says incorrect positioning can impair noise cancellation and cause echo. Turn the headphones off, remove and reseat the pad carefully, and verify that the material is correctly positioned without touching the driver. If the symptom remains, seek service rather than modifying the internal material.
You touched or contaminated the driver
Stop the replacement work and avoid further contact. Sony’s instructions say not to touch the exposed driver. If anything has entered the driver area or a component appears damaged, use an Authorized Service Center.
A claw or hook appears broken
Do not glue the pad in place or continue forcing it. The documented attachment depends on six claws engaging their hooks; a damaged attachment point may prevent a secure fit. Stop and ask an Authorized Service Center about repair.
