The safe way to replace an older gadget’s battery is to identify the exact make and model, follow its repair guide, shut the gadget down, unplug every external power source, and use the specified removal method. Do not improvise around a lithium-ion cell: never puncture or sharply bend it, keep sharp tools away, and stop immediately if the battery is swollen, unusually hot, smoking, or giving off a strong odor.
Because the gadget is unspecified, there is no universal opening sequence or universally compatible replacement battery. The case, fasteners, adhesive, battery chemistry, connectors, and reassembly procedure all depend on the model.
First decide whether this is a normal repair
Before buying a part or opening the case, find the gadget’s model number and the manufacturer’s repair documentation. A model name alone may cover several revisions with different batteries or cable layouts. Record the exact model, revision, and battery label if it is visible without opening the device.

General advice cannot identify a compatible battery for an unnamed gadget. If the model cannot be established, stop at identification rather than guessing from a photograph or from a similar-looking device.
What to record before ordering
Write down every identifier you can obtain without opening the gadget: manufacturer, full model number, revision or generation, and any regional suffix. If the battery label is externally visible, record its chemistry, voltage, capacity, and part number exactly as printed. A nearly identical name can conceal a different connector, cable length, mounting shape, or battery-management arrangement.

Stop if the battery shows danger signs
A lithium-ion battery stores enough energy to cause rapid heating or fire if its cell is damaged. Puncturing, crushing, or sharply bending the cell can release that energy. The following conditions change the job from an ordinary replacement to a safety problem.

iFixit’s swollen-battery guidance and its September 20, 2023 safety article both advise against operating or charging a swollen device and warn that removal can be hazardous. If any step feels unsafe, stop and ask a professional rather than trying to finish the repair.
Prepare a controlled work area
Preparation prevents many accidental shorts, torn cables, and dropped tools. Work on a clean, stable, well-lit surface where the gadget cannot slide. Keep loose metal objects away from the exposed electronics, and organize screws and small parts as they come out. The exact equipment depends on the model, but these categories are broadly useful:
- Model-specific repair guide: Keep the correct disassembly and reassembly instructions open before you begin.
- Plastic electronics pry tools: Plastic tools are recommended around lithium-ion batteries because they reduce the chance of cutting or shorting the cell compared with sharp metal tools. They are a task-enabling category, not a guarantee that every gadget can be opened safely.
- The specified drivers and accessories: Use only the driver sizes and other tools called for by the guide. A poor-fitting driver can damage fasteners and make the case harder to close.
- Parts containers or labels: Keep fasteners and brackets identified by their location so they are not mixed during reassembly.
Do not start with a knife, screwdriver tip, or other sharp object simply because it is nearby. Keep tools away from the battery cell and cables. If the guide calls for a solvent to release adhesive, read the solvent warning before opening the container: solvents can be flammable, and acetone can damage plastic components.

1. Confirm the part before opening the gadget
Match the replacement against the exact model and revision. Compare the connector position, cable routing, physical shape, and label information with the guide and the original part if it is externally visible. A battery that appears to fit but has a different connector or rating is not an acceptable substitute.
When a seller offers several versions, ask for the model compatibility list and the battery’s condition. A used, refurbished, or new cell is a meaningful difference; do not assume the condition from a product photograph. Check return and warranty terms in case the part is incompatible or arrives damaged.
2. Read the entire guide and identify stop points
Read the guide once before touching the device. Mark where it tells you to disconnect power, remove adhesive, handle a connector, or protect a cable. Note whether the guide warns about a swollen battery or requires a particular replacement adhesive. If you cannot understand a step or do not have the specified tool, do not substitute force for information.

3. Shut down and unplug everything
Power the gadget down using its normal shutdown command. “Off” is not enough if the device remains connected to a charger, dock, computer, or other external source. Disconnect every external cable before opening it. This is a basic requirement in iFixit’s device-safety instructions.
Do not begin while the gadget is hot from use or charging. Let it reach a normal temperature, then inspect the case again for swelling, odor, or other warning signs. If the case is lifting because of a swollen cell, do not press it flat or clamp it closed.
4. Open the case exactly as the guide shows
Older gadgets may use screws, clips, adhesive, or a combination. Do not assume that a seam indicates where to pry or that a familiar model opens the same way as another revision. Follow the guide’s order and place each fastener where you can identify it later.
Use the specified plastic pry tool where the instructions call for one. Insert it only where the guide indicates and move it gently. Keep the tool away from the battery pouch, its edges, and its cable. If the case resists, stop and reread the instructions instead of increasing leverage.
5. Disconnect the battery before manipulating it
Follow the model guide’s instructions for locating and disconnecting the battery connector. Do not pull on a cable, scrape across the cell, or lever against the battery to reach a connector. The connector type and access path vary by device, so a generic sequence would be unsafe.

Once disconnected, keep the battery flat and supported as directed by the guide. Never puncture it or bend it sharply. Even a cell that looks intact can be damaged by a tool slip or excessive deformation.
6. Release adhesive only by the approved method
Adhesive removal is one of the points where improvisation causes damage. Some guides specify a particular pull direction or solvent; others use a different method. Follow the method for your model and use solvent sparingly if the guide calls for it.
Treat every solvent as flammable. Keep it away from ignition sources and avoid allowing it to spread over the electronics. Acetone may damage plastic parts, so do not use it merely because it is available. If the adhesive will not release using the documented method, stop and obtain help rather than prying harder against the cell.

7. Remove the old cell without bending or puncturing it
Keep sharp tools away from the battery. Do not stab, twist, fold, crush, or sharply bend the cell to make it fit through an opening. If the battery begins to swell, heat up, smell strongly, or smoke during removal, stop immediately and move away. The safe response is professional help, not a faster attempt to finish.
8. Install the verified replacement
Compare the new battery with the old one before connecting it. The shape, connector, cable route, and mounting points should agree with the model-specific instructions. Do not force a connector, compress the cell to fit, or modify the battery pouch. If it does not sit naturally in the documented position, stop and verify the part number.
Use only the adhesive, brackets, insulation, and fasteners specified by the guide. Keep cables in their original channels so they are not pinched when the case closes. Do not leave a loose battery or unsupported cable inside the gadget.
9. Reassemble in the documented order
Before closing the case, check the guide’s connector, cable, and fastener steps one more time. Make sure no tool, screw, packaging, or adhesive liner remains inside. Close the case without squeezing or flexing the battery. If the case will not close with normal pressure, reopen only as far as the guide permits and find the obstruction; never clamp the case shut.
Test the gadget using the guide’s specified procedure. If it does not respond, becomes hot, emits an odor, or shows any swelling, disconnect external power if it is safe to do so, stop testing, and consult a qualified repair professional. Do not repeatedly charge a device that is showing a battery warning.

Questions to resolve before you start
Check the guide for details that broad safety advice cannot supply. Does the model require removing a screen, back cover, bracket, or other assembly before the battery connector is reachable? Is the battery held by pull tabs, adhesive strips, or a different mounting system? Does reassembly require replacement adhesive or insulation? Are there connector locks that must be lifted rather than pulled? These details determine the safe order of work.
Also decide where the old battery will go before opening the gadget. Collection programs differ by battery type and location, and a nearby electronics drop-off may not accept every cell. Confirm acceptance in advance so a removed battery is not left loose or placed in an unsuitable bin.

Do not put the removed battery in household trash or ordinary recycling. Battery collection rules differ by battery type and location, so contact a local recycler, retailer take-back program, municipal collection site, or electronics facility and confirm that it accepts your battery before traveling there.
Keep the removed cell protected from puncture, crushing, and shorting while you arrange disposal. If it is swollen, hot, damaged, smoking, or strongly odorous, do not transport it as an ordinary recycling drop-off. - You lack the specified tools or cannot see how to protect the cell and cables.
- The replacement does not match the documented connector, shape, or mounting position.

Stopping is not failure. A battery replacement is successful only when the cell is removed without damage, the correct part is installed, the case is safely reassembled, and the old battery reaches an appropriate collection channel.

- Verify the replacement battery and included materials against that guide.

Is it safe to keep using a gadget with a swollen battery?
