Do not start by opening the controller. Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 batteries should not be replaced by the owner and that replacement must be performed by a qualified professional. A detailed Nintendo procedure does exist for one specific left-controller revision, however: Joy-Con 2 (L) model BEE-012(-01), which uses battery BEE-004(-01L). First identify the side and exact model printed on your controller. The same steps do not automatically apply to every Joy-Con 2, and Nintendo’s right-side instructions identify different part numbers.
Why the model number matters
“Nintendo Switch 2 controller” can mean either Joy-Con 2 side, and each side has more than one hardware revision. Nintendo’s published opening procedure is limited to the left Joy-Con 2 revision BEE-012(-01). Nintendo states that this revision has a user-replaceable battery; the closely related model marked BEE-012 does not.
Turn the controller over and read the model marking before buying a battery or selecting a repair procedure. Do not identify a battery by appearance alone. A connector, screw layout or battery shape that looks similar is not proof of compatibility.
| Controller | Model identified by Nintendo | Battery specified by Nintendo | What the published information establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Left Joy-Con 2 | BEE-012(-01) | BEE-004(-01L) | Nintendo provides a detailed replacement procedure for this revision. |
| Left Joy-Con 2 | BEE-012 | Not stated | Nintendo says this revision does not have a user-replaceable battery; do not use the BEE-012(-01) procedure. |
| Right Joy-Con 2 | BEE-014(-01) | BEE-004(-01R) | Nintendo’s search result identifies these parts and a matching kit, but the detailed page was not available here. Do not assume the left-side steps are identical. |
The suffix is important. “(-01)” is not interchangeable with the version lacking that suffix, and the left and right battery kits are side-specific. If the label is hard to read, photograph it and ask Nintendo Support to confirm the revision before opening the housing.

Nintendo’s safety warning comes first
Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 leaflet states: “The product contains a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Do not replace the batteries yourself. The batteries must be removed and replaced by a qualified professional.” Nintendo’s general Switch 2 safety guidance also says: “Do not disassemble, attempt to repair, or deform the battery.”
Those instructions are more restrictive than a typical hobbyist repair guide. The official left-side procedure describes how a qualified person can service a particular revision; it is not a blanket approval to open every Joy-Con 2. If your controller is swollen, cracked, wet, unusually hot, emitting an odor, smoking, or leaking, stop using it, move it away from flammable material if it is safe to do so, and contact Nintendo or a qualified repair professional. Do not puncture, squeeze, bend, burn, solder, or short the cell.
- Keep the controller and battery away from flames, heaters and direct heat.
- Do not continue if any screw is stripped, the housing is damaged, or a cable is torn.
- Do not use a replacement whose side, model and part number are not confirmed.
- Work on a clean, dry, nonflammable surface with small parts contained.
If electrolyte contacts skin, Nintendo says to wash thoroughly with soap and water. If it reaches the eyes, flush with water and seek care from a qualified health professional. A leaking or damaged lithium-ion cell should not be transported loosely or placed in household trash; ask Nintendo or local hazardous-waste services for handling instructions.

- Screwdriver: Nintendo specifies a PH00 cross-head screwdriver for the four rear-housing screws.
- Work surface: clean, dry and well lit, with a tray for screws.
- Adhesive: iFixit’s independent left Joy-Con 2 guide notes that replacement adhesive or thin double-sided tape may be needed if the replacement battery does not include it.
iFixit also warns that the controller uses JIS screws and that a Phillips driver can strip them. That is independent guidance, while Nintendo’s own procedure specifies PH00. Use a correctly fitting precision driver and stop if the bit slips; forcing a fastener can turn a battery replacement into a housing repair. iFixit’s guide shows an update date of August 4, 2025, but it is not a substitute for Nintendo’s model-specific warning.
How to replace the battery in left Joy-Con 2 BEE-012(-01)
The following sequence reflects Nintendo’s published instructions for that exact revision. It should not be applied to BEE-012, the right controller, or an unverified model.
1. Power down and prepare the controller
- Shut down the Nintendo Switch 2 or detach the controller according to the console’s normal removal procedure.
- Move the controller to a clean, dry surface. Keep liquids, metal tools and loose parts away from the open housing.
- Confirm that the back label reads BEE-012(-01) and that the replacement is marked BEE-004(-01L). If either marking does not match, stop.
2. Remove the four rear-housing screws
- Use the PH00 cross-head screwdriver specified by Nintendo.
- Remove the four screws in the rear housing. Keep them separated from any other screws; their locations and lengths matter.
- Apply steady downward pressure and turn slowly. A slipping bit can damage the head and prevent safe reassembly.
3. Open the housing without pulling the lower cables
- Open the housing slowly, keeping the open side facing upward as Nintendo directs.
- Do not disconnect the cables at the bottom of the housing. The lower-housing cables must remain connected while the controller is open.
- Support the two halves so the cables are not stretched, folded sharply or caught under an edge.
4. Disconnect only the battery
- Locate the connector closest to the battery.
- Disconnect the battery cables from that connector only. Do not remove or unplug the other housing cables.
- Pull on the connector as instructed by the service design, not on the wire itself. If it does not release with gentle, controlled movement, stop and seek professional service rather than levering against the circuit board.
5. Remove the three battery-retaining screws
- Remove the three screws securing the battery.
- Remove no other screws. Nintendo specifically distinguishes these three battery screws from the rest of the assembly.
- Lift the battery out carefully. Do not bend, pierce or pry against the cell.
6. Install the new battery, but leave its cable disconnected initially
- Place BEE-004(-01L) in the battery compartment in the same orientation as the original.
- Secure it with the three battery screws. Do not overtighten them or use a screw from another location.
- Follow Nintendo’s sequence and do not connect the battery cable yet. The cable is reconnected during the assembly stage.
7. Reconnect and close the controller
- At the assembly stage, reconnect the battery cable to its designated connector.
- Before closing the housing, confirm that the lower-housing cable is still attached, no cable is trapped in the seam, and no loose objects or liquid remain inside.
- Align the housing halves without forcing them. If the seam will not close evenly, reopen it and find the obstruction instead of tightening the screws to pull the halves together.
- Replace the four rear-housing screws and tighten them evenly with the precision driver.
8. Record the battery lot number
Nintendo instructs the installer to record the new battery’s lot number. Write it in your repair record with the controller model, replacement date and any service receipt. A record helps Nintendo or a repair professional identify the installed part if the controller later develops a charging, thermal or power problem.

9. Perform the final assembly check
- Check that the housing is fully seated and the seam is even.
- Confirm that no cable is pinched and that no loose object or liquid is inside.
- Listen for rattling while gently moving the controller.
- Press the buttons normally and check that they return without unusual resistance.
- Reconnect the controller to the Switch 2 and verify that it powers and communicates normally.
If the controller becomes hot, smells unusual, fails to power on, rattles, or shows erratic input, disconnect it and stop using it. Do not repeatedly charge a suspect battery to “test” it.

What to do with the right Joy-Con 2
Nintendo’s right-side search result identifies Joy-Con 2 (R) model BEE-014(-01), battery BEE-004(-01R), and a matching replacement kit. The detailed right-side support page was not available in the material used for this article, so the left-side sequence above must not be presented as the right-side procedure.
Check Nintendo’s support instructions for your region and the exact BEE-014(-01) revision before removing any screw. Confirm the kit’s availability and terms, and use a qualified professional if Nintendo’s instructions say the work is not user-serviceable or if the model marking differs. A right controller that is not the “(-01)” revision should be treated as non-user-replaceable unless Nintendo explicitly states otherwise.
Non-replaceable revisions: the safe support route
If your left controller is marked BEE-012 without “(-01),” Nintendo says it does not have a user-replaceable battery. Do not convert the documented BEE-012(-01) procedure into a workaround. The same principle applies when the marking is missing, unreadable or inconsistent with the battery package.

When an independent repair guide can help
An independent guide can provide useful visual orientation for a left Joy-Con 2, especially for recognizing JIS fasteners and replacing adhesive. iFixit’s guide is specifically for a left Joy-Con 2 and warns about screw-driver fit and adhesive. Treat those points as supplementary. They do not override Nintendo’s qualified-professional warning, establish that every revision is user-replaceable, or authorize the left procedure for the right controller.
Do not infer battery capacity, runtime improvement or charging performance from a replacement listing. The available documentation does not establish those values for the relevant Joy-Con 2 batteries, and a capacity claim without a matching part number is not a compatibility test.

The controller does not power on
Stop charging it repeatedly. Recheck only the approved assembly points: the battery connector, the lower-housing cables, the housing seam and the four rear screws. If a connector is damaged or a cable is torn, disconnect the controller and use professional service.

There is a rattle
Do not continue normal use. Nintendo’s check requires no rattle after assembly. A rattle can indicate a loose screw, an unsecured battery or another object inside the housing; reopen only if you can do so safely for the verified revision, otherwise contact a professional.
Buttons feel different
Check for a pinched cable or unevenly seated housing. Do not spray cleaner or liquid into the controller. If normal button travel does not return after a careful visual check, stop and seek service.
The battery gets hot, swells or leaks
Disconnect charging if it is safe, keep the controller away from flammable materials, and do not press or puncture the battery. Follow Nintendo’s skin and eye first-aid guidance for any electrolyte exposure and contact qualified support or local hazardous-battery services.
Decision checklist
- Model confirmed as BEE-012(-01) left: Nintendo has a detailed procedure, but its leaflet still says replacement should be done by a qualified professional.
- Model BEE-012 without “(-01)”: treat it as non-user-replaceable and contact Nintendo.
- Right BEE-014(-01): obtain and follow the right-side Nintendo procedure; do not copy the left steps.
- Any other, missing or damaged marking: do not guess; ask Nintendo or a qualified repair professional.
- Any swelling, heat, odor, leakage or liquid damage: stop and use the safety route, not a DIY replacement.
Frequently asked practical questions
Can I replace a Joy-Con 2 battery myself?
Nintendo’s direct leaflet instruction is no: it says not to replace the batteries yourself and requires a qualified professional. Nintendo nevertheless publishes a model-specific left-side procedure for BEE-012(-01). That procedure should be treated as service documentation for the identified revision, not as permission to open every Joy-Con 2.
Which battery fits a left Joy-Con 2?
For the documented user-replaceable left revision BEE-012(-01), Nintendo specifies BEE-004(-01L) and its matching replacement kit.
Which battery fits a right Joy-Con 2?
Nintendo’s right-side search result specifies BEE-004(-01R) for BEE-014(-01). Obtain the complete right-side instructions before attempting work because the detailed page was not available here.
Is HAC-006 compatible with Joy-Con 2?
It is not established as compatible. The cited HAC-006 listing covers older original Joy-Con, Switch HAC-001/HAC-001(-01), and Switch OLED HEG-001, not Joy-Con 2.
