DJI Docks do not automatically remove and replace an aircraft battery. DJI states that battery replacement is not supported and that the dock provides charging only. Replacing the aircraft battery is therefore a manual maintenance task: end the mission, land the aircraft, make the dock safe as required by the exact maintenance manual, fit the correct battery, and verify the result in DJI FlightHub 2 before resuming operations.

This guide separates the aircraft’s Intelligent Flight Battery from the dock’s own backup battery, covers the original DJI Dock and DJI Dock 2, and gives a model-safe maintenance routine without inventing a universal screw or removal sequence that DJI has not published for every dock generation.

Know which DJI Dock and which battery you are servicing

The original DJI Dock and DJI Dock 2 serve different aircraft generations. The aircraft battery is removable, but neither dock can exchange it unattended. The dock can maintain the battery’s charge and report battery status; an operator must perform the physical change.

System Aircraft generation Automatic aircraft-battery replacement Battery point to service
Original DJI Dock Matrice 30-series aircraft Not supported; charging mode only The aircraft’s compatible Intelligent Flight Battery, using the applicable aircraft and dock manuals
DJI Dock 2 Matrice 3D-series aircraft Not supported; charging mode only The Matrice 3D Series Intelligent Flight Battery
DJI Dock 2 backup system Dock infrastructure, not the aircraft Separate from the aircraft battery A 12 Ah, 12 V lead-acid backup battery, maintained under the dock’s service instructions

Do not treat the dock’s backup battery as a spare flight battery. It powers dock functions during an outage; it does not replace the aircraft battery or enable aircraft charging while mains power is unavailable.

When a DJI Dock 2 aircraft battery should be replaced

The DJI Dock 2/Matrice 3D Series Maintenance Manual identifies three replacement triggers. Stop normal operations and follow the model-specific maintenance procedure when any one applies:

  • The pack is visibly swollen, leaking, or otherwise damaged.
  • The battery has reached its rated 400 cycles. DJI gives this rating in its 2024 maintenance documentation and current specifications.
  • A battery error remains after two consecutive standard charge-and-discharge operations.

FlightHub 2 reports battery warnings and related status information. A battery that has reached its rated life can still appear to work, but DJI warns that continued use may leave the user responsible for damage to equipment and for losses suffered by third parties. Treat the cycle rating as an operational limit, not as a target to exceed while waiting for a more obvious failure.

Cycle count is only one decision input. A pack with fewer cycles still requires immediate removal from service if it is swollen, leaking, physically damaged, overheated, or associated with a persistent error.

Identify the correct replacement for DJI Dock 2

For DJI Dock 2 with a Matrice 3D-series aircraft, use the DJI Matrice 3D Series Intelligent Flight Battery. Confirm the exact aircraft and dock model before ordering or installing anything. A battery from another DJI aircraft is not an acceptable substitute merely because its connector looks similar.

Specification Matrice 3D Series Intelligent Flight Battery
Capacity 7,811 mAh
Nominal voltage 14.76 V
Maximum charging voltage 17.0 V
Cell configuration and chemistry Li-ion 4S
Energy 115.2 Wh
Mass 544 g
Rated cycle count 400 cycles
Aircraft-battery charging temperature 5–45 °C (41–113 °F)

These figures are from DJI Enterprise’s current Dock 2 specification page accessed on October 15, 2026. The charging base is rated at 100 W, accepts 5–20 V through USB-C, and provides 12–17 V at the battery port. It charges one battery at a time, within a 5–40 °C charging-base temperature range. The aircraft-battery and charging-base ranges are not interchangeable: use the narrower limit that applies to the component and procedure you are handling.

Prepare the dock before removing a battery

Battery work must not interrupt an active flight or leave the aircraft and dock in an undefined power state. Use this sequence as a planning checklist, then follow the exact maintenance manual for your model.

  1. Confirm the hardware. Record whether the installation is an original DJI Dock/Matrice 30-series system or a DJI Dock 2/Matrice 3D-series system. Confirm the aircraft serial or asset record and the battery designation required by that system.
  2. Review FlightHub 2. Check the battery warning, cycle count, temperature information, and error details. Save the event information required by your organization before clearing or closing an alert.
  3. End the mission normally. Do not begin a replacement while the aircraft is airborne or while an automated mission is in progress. Land the aircraft and wait until flight operations have ended.
  4. Make the dock safe. Power down and isolate the dock exactly as the applicable maintenance procedure requires. The manuals, rather than a generic internet sequence, determine which controls, isolation points, and confirmations apply to your dock generation.
  5. Inspect the work area. Work in a dry, well-ventilated location away from flammable materials and flammable surfaces. Do not charge or handle the pack in a humid environment where a short circuit could occur.

DJI’s published material does not provide one universal screwdriver sequence or removal order for every Dock generation. Do not improvise a procedure from a different aircraft or dock. If the current model manual is unavailable, postpone the work and obtain the correct maintenance documentation or qualified service assistance.

  1. Remove the installed pack using the model-specific procedure. Do not force a latch, pull on wiring, or open the battery housing. A battery that is swollen, leaking, cracked, or otherwise damaged should not be handled as a routine removal; stop and isolate it for disposal instructions.
  2. Keep the battery intact. Never disassemble, pierce, crush, solder, or modify a DJI Intelligent Flight Battery. Do not attempt to repair an internal cell or bypass its protection electronics.
  3. Inspect the aircraft battery bay. Check that the contacts, guides, latches, and seating surfaces are clean, dry, and undamaged. If the aircraft or its connector is damaged, do not install a replacement merely to return the system to service.
  4. Fit the exact compatible battery. Align the pack as described in the aircraft manual and engage every latch or retention feature. A connector that appears to fit is not proof of electrical or mechanical compatibility.
  5. Reassemble and restore the dock state. Close covers and return the dock to its normal configuration using the maintenance procedure. Keep people clear of moving mechanisms while the dock performs its checks.

Do not power up an uncertain installation to “see whether it works.” If seating, latching, contacts, or the battery identity is unclear, leave the system isolated and resolve the uncertainty first.

Verify charging and FlightHub 2 status after installation

  1. Charge within the specified range. For the Matrice 3D Series battery, DJI lists 5–45 °C for aircraft-battery charging. The Dock 2 charging base itself is specified for 5–40 °C and charges one battery at a time.
  2. Keep the charging area safe. Charge away from combustibles and on a non-flammable surface. Stop if the battery becomes abnormally hot, deforms, leaks, or emits an unusual odor.
  3. Check recognition. Confirm that the aircraft and FlightHub 2 identify the newly installed battery and display its status rather than an installation or communication error.
  4. Review warnings again. Do not return the aircraft to a mission merely because it powers on. Confirm that the original battery warning is cleared or that the remaining message has an understood, documented cause.
  5. Perform a controlled operational check. Follow the maintenance manual’s post-installation checks before authorizing an unmanned mission. Record the replacement date, battery identity, and initial cycle or health information in the fleet record.

Safe charging and handling rules

DJI’s maintenance instructions treat a flight battery as a high-energy lithium-ion pack. Apply these rules every time, not only during a replacement:

  • Never charge near flammable materials or on a flammable surface.
  • Keep the battery dry. Humidity can create a short-circuit risk.
  • Do not disassemble or pierce the battery.
  • Use the specified charger, charging base, and temperature range; do not connect the pack to an improvised power supply.
  • Allow a battery to cool after flight before charging it.
  • Stop using any pack that is swollen, leaking, damaged, or overheating.
  • Store batteries in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place.

If FlightHub 2 reports that battery temperature is too high during operation, initiate return-to-home immediately in accordance with the flight operation’s emergency procedures. Do not defer the response until the aircraft reaches a planned destination.

Store a DJI flight battery for more than 10 days

DJI’s Battery Routine Maintenance Guide recommends reducing a battery to 40–65% charge before storage longer than 10 days. Store it in a cool, dry location; DJI identifies approximately 22–28 °C as ideal. Avoid leaving the pack in the aircraft or dock when the installation will be unattended for an extended period unless the applicable operating procedure specifically requires it.

About every three months, perform DJI’s maintenance cycle:

  1. Charge the battery fully.
  2. Insert it in the aircraft and power the aircraft on without taking off.
  3. Continue the controlled discharge until the last battery indicator begins flashing.
  4. Recharge the battery fully.
  5. Power the aircraft on again and discharge the battery to 65%.
  6. Store it at that 65% level in the cool, dry environment.

Plan this cycle where the aircraft can remain supervised and where charging and discharging can be stopped safely. It is not a reason to fly an unnecessary mission. The purpose is battery maintenance, not flight training or endurance testing.

Understand the DJI Dock 2 backup battery during a power outage

DJI Dock 2 has a separate built-in backup battery: a 12 Ah, 12 V lead-acid battery. DJI rates runtime at more than five hours when the backup battery is fully charged and the ambient temperature is 25 °C. That figure describes dock backup operation under DJI’s stated condition, not additional aircraft flight time.

After a power outage, DJI states that the dock cannot charge the aircraft and cannot operate air-conditioning, dock-cover heating, or wind-speed-gauge heating. Check the dock for malfunctions promptly when power is lost or restored. Backup power is intended to keep the dock available for limited functions; it is not a substitute for mains power or for a charged aircraft battery.

Troubleshoot common battery-service outcomes

Symptom Safe response
FlightHub 2 still shows the old battery warning after replacement Keep the aircraft out of service. Confirm that the exact compatible battery is installed and fully latched, then inspect the contacts and review the model-specific maintenance checks. If the warning persists, follow DJI service guidance rather than repeatedly cycling the pack.
The replacement battery is not recognized Do not force the connector or alter firmware, wiring, or protection components. Return the dock to a safe state, verify the battery designation and seating, and escalate an unresolved recognition error through the applicable maintenance procedure.
The battery becomes hot while charging Stop charging if the temperature is outside the permitted range or the pack behaves abnormally. Move people away, keep the battery away from combustibles, and treat swelling, leaking, or damage as a quarantine condition.
A battery error remains after two standard charge-and-discharge operations Replace the battery under the Dock 2/Matrice 3D maintenance criteria. Do not continue operations in the hope that additional cycles will clear the error.
The dock loses mains power Account for the limits of the 12 Ah, 12 V backup battery. The dock cannot charge the aircraft or run its heating and air-conditioning functions during the outage, so inspect the system and restore normal power before planning a mission.

Use a repeatable maintenance record

A simple record prevents a battery with an unresolved problem from returning to an unattended dock. For each pack, record:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Dock generation and aircraft model.
  • Battery designation and serial or asset identifier.
  • Installation and removal dates.
  • Cycle count and the FlightHub 2 warning or error that prompted the action.
  • Inspection results for swelling, leakage, damage, contacts, and latches.
  • Charging temperature and any abnormal behavior.
  • Quarantine, recycling, or service-disposition details for the removed pack.

Before authorizing the next mission, the record should show that the aircraft recognizes the installed battery, charging completed within the permitted temperature range, and no unresolved battery warning remains.

Final go/no-go check

Return a DJI Dock aircraft to unattended service only when the dock and aircraft model are confirmed, the correct battery is installed intact, the physical seating and contacts are sound, charging has been completed safely, FlightHub 2 recognizes the pack, and the applicable maintenance checks show no unresolved warning. If any of those conditions is uncertain, keep the aircraft grounded and the dock in the safe state specified by its manual until the issue is resolved.
