Set the replacement router’s Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password to exactly match the old ones—including capitalization—and most of your Wi-Fi devices should reconnect automatically. You still need to set up the router’s internet connection separately, and some devices may need to be rejoined by hand.

Before you disconnect the old router

Record your Wi-Fi settings

Write down the exact SSID and Wi-Fi password. If your old router used different network names or passwords for different bands, record each one and plan to reproduce the same arrangement. Passwords are case-sensitive, so capitalization must match. TP-Link’s current setup flow may offer separate settings for 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz; Smart Connect can use one name for supported 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Options depend on the model. Gather equipment and ISP details

Have the replacement router and its power adapter, your modem, a phone or computer for setup, and an Ethernet cable ready. TP-Link recommends confirming that the modem has an internet connection before removing the old router; an Ethernet cable is usually included with a router. If your ISP requires a connection type, PPPoE username and password, or VLAN ID, get the necessary details from the ISP before you begin. Keep the old router available until the replacement is online and your key devices have been checked. TP-Link router setup guidance

Replace the router and keep the same Wi-Fi credentials

  1. Power off the modem. Disconnect the old router and connect the modem’s Ethernet cable to the new router’s Internet/WAN port.
  2. Start the equipment in order. Turn on the modem and wait for it to finish starting. Then turn on the new router and wait for it to start.
  3. Connect to the new router. Use a phone or computer to join its default Wi-Fi network, or connect by Ethernet. Open the TP-Link Tether app or, while connected to the router, enter tplinkwifi.net or 192.168.0.1 in a browser’s address bar. Internet access is not required just to open the local management page.
  4. Complete internet setup. Follow the setup wizard and check its detected connection type against your ISP’s instructions. Enter any required PPPoE credentials or VLAN details. Do not guess ISP-specific values.
  5. Enter the old Wi-Fi name and password. In the Wi-Fi settings step, reproduce the old SSID and password exactly. TP-Link’s new-interface setup flow may offer “Use the Current Wi-Fi Settings.” Match the old band and network-name arrangement. Enable Smart Connect only if you want supported bands to share a name. 6. Set the router’s admin password. This password controls access to router settings; it is separate from the Wi-Fi password. Newer models may ask you to create a local admin password. Use a distinct, secure password unless you deliberately choose otherwise.
  7. Save and test. Apply the settings, let the router restart if prompted, and check that a connected device can reach the internet. Rejoin any device that did not reconnect automatically.

Why matching the name and password usually works

Wi-Fi devices save a network name and password, rather than identifying the physical router. When both credentials on the new router match the old ones, most devices reconnect automatically. TP-Link’s replacement guide, dated August 27, 2026, describes this as the expected result for most Wi-Fi-connected devices—not a guarantee for every device. TP-Link router replacement guide

If something goes wrong

A device does not reconnect

  • Check that the SSID and password match the old network exactly, including capitalization and any separate band names.
  • Open the device’s Wi-Fi controls or app, select the network and enter the password again. Some devices require a manual reconnect even when the credentials are unchanged.

The router’s settings page will not open

Connect your phone or computer to the new router by Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then enter tplinkwifi.net or 192.168.0.1 in the browser address bar. If prompted, use the router’s admin password—not the Wi-Fi password.

The router has no internet connection

  • Confirm that the modem is connected to the router’s Internet/WAN port and that the modem has finished starting.
  • Check the ISP-required connection type and any PPPoE or VLAN settings with your ISP.
  • If the router reports an Internet IP address of 0.0.0.0, TP-Link says to check the modem connection and physical setup. TP-Link internet connection troubleshooting

You do not know the PPPoE password

Ask your ISP for the required credentials. TP-Link also documents a way to retrieve PPPoE credentials from an old router in a supported Archer AX55 setup flow; availability depends on the model and setup path. TP-Link PPPoE guidance

You are considering a factory reset

A reset erases custom internet, Wi-Fi and admin settings on the router being reset. It does not transfer the old router’s settings to the replacement, so it is not a credential-migration step.
