To change a PDF’s page order, drag its page thumbnails into place; to remove pages, delete them; to save selected pages in a separate document, use the extraction command. In Acrobat desktop, these actions are in All tools > Organize pages. Acrobat on the web offers page organization too, but it saves the edited PDF to Adobe cloud storage.
Choose the right action before editing
- Move or reorder: changes where pages appear in the existing PDF.
- Delete: removes selected pages from the PDF.
- Extract: creates a new PDF from selected pages. You can also choose to delete those pages from the original during extraction.
These operations have different effects: copying a page duplicates it, while moving changes its position. Adobe documents both thumbnail drag-and-drop and cut/copy/paste for rearranging pages in Acrobat desktop: Move or copy pages in PDFs in Acrobat on desktop.
Reorder pages in Acrobat desktop
- Open the PDF and select All tools > Organize pages.
- Select a page thumbnail. To select multiple pages, hold Ctrl on Windows or Command on macOS while selecting them.
- Drag the selected thumbnails to the desired position. Alternatively, select a thumbnail, choose More > Cut or Copy, select the insertion point, then choose Paste. Use Cut to move pages and Copy to duplicate them.
- Save the PDF.
Delete pages from a PDF
In Acrobat desktop
- Open the PDF and select All tools > Organize pages.
- Select the thumbnails for the pages you want to remove, then use the delete control in the page-organizing view.
- Save the edited PDF.
Adobe’s desktop move and extract guides do not specify a full current deletion procedure or a consistent button label for every desktop version, so the precise control may vary. In Acrobat on the web, Adobe’s documented steps are to hover over a page thumbnail, select Delete, and then select Save.

Extract selected pages into a new PDF
- Open the PDF in Acrobat desktop and select All tools > Organize pages.
- Select the page thumbnails or range you want in the new document, then choose Extract pages.
- Choose whether to select Delete pages after extracting or Extract pages as separate files. If you leave both options unchecked, Acrobat creates a new PDF and keeps the selected pages in the original.
- Select Extract, then save the new PDF when prompted.
Adobe says extraction includes page content, form fields, comments, and links. Associated bookmarks and article threads are not extracted, so documents that rely on those navigation features may need them recreated in the new PDF. See Adobe’s Extract pages from PDFs in Acrobat on desktop.

Organize pages in Acrobat on the web
Acrobat on the web documents dragging page thumbnails to reorder them, deleting pages through a thumbnail’s Delete control, rotating pages, and inserting pages from another file. Select Save after editing. Adobe says the organized PDF is automatically saved to Adobe cloud storage; consider that file handling before choosing the browser workflow for sensitive documents. Extract pages locally with PDFsam Basic
PDFsam Basic documents page extraction from one or multiple PDFs, with selections entered as page numbers or ranges. Its examples include 2,5-7,12- and last; the vendor also describes choosing whether to create one file per range. PDFsam describes Basic as free and open source, and says it processes files locally rather than uploading them. Those are vendor statements, not independent security testing. Check the result before sharing
- Open the saved PDF and confirm that pages are in the intended order.
- For extraction, check whether the original should retain the selected pages or have them removed.
- Confirm that the new file contains the intended page range and that any needed navigation structure, such as bookmarks, is present.
- If you used Acrobat on the web, remember that Adobe documents automatic saving to its cloud storage.
