To rearrange photos in a Google Photos album, open the album’s editing or sorting controls and drag items into the order you want. You can also sort automatically by Newest, Oldest, or Recently added. The steps differ slightly on a computer, Android, and iPhone or iPad.
Choose manual ordering or an automatic sort
Manual ordering lets you place photos, videos, text, and locations in a custom sequence by dragging them. Google Photos also offers three automatic choices:

| Newest | Orders items by date, newest first. |
| Oldest | Orders items by date, oldest first. |
| Recently added | Orders items by when they were added to the album, not necessarily when the photo was taken. |

- Go to photos.google.com and sign in.
- Open the album you want to change.
- At the top right, select More > Edit album.
- For a custom order, drag items into position.
- For an automatic order, use the sort control and choose Newest, Oldest, or Recently added.
Rearrange an album on Android
- Open Google Photos and sign in.
- Tap Collections > Albums, then open the album.
- Tap Edit album.
- To apply an automatic order, tap Sort by and choose Newest, Oldest, or Recently added. To set a custom order, drag the items.
- Tap Done.
Rearrange an album on iPhone or iPad
- Open Google Photos and sign in.
- Tap Collections > Albums, then open the album.
- Tap Sort to view Newest, Oldest, and Recently added.
- To create a custom sequence, drag items to their desired positions.
Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions do not specify a separate Done button for this reordering step. Follow the controls shown in your current app.

If you cannot edit or move items
Check who created the album
Only the album’s creator can make changes. A collaborator who did not create it can add photos and videos, but cannot make the documented album edits. If you do not see an edit or sort control, check whether you own the album. See Google Photos Help on album sharing and editing.
Know what removing an item does
Removing a photo or video from an album does not delete it from your Google Photos library. It remains in the main library unless you separately delete it from the Photos section. See Google Photos Help on removing items from albums.

Account for very large albums
Google documents a limit of up to 20,000 photos or videos in an album and cautions that some features may be unavailable in very large albums. Google does not specify that reordering is one of the affected features. See Google Photos Help on album limits.

An album cover controls which photo represents the album in your album list; it does not change the order of the album’s items. Google Photos documents a separate Use as album cover control in its album editing instructions.
