The quickest way to rename a Windows 11 PC is Settings > System > About > Rename this PC. Enter a valid name, select Next, then choose whether to restart immediately or later. For repeatable administration, PowerShell’s Rename-Computer cmdlet does the same job. System Properties remains a possible legacy route, although its exact interface and availability are not uniformly verified for current Windows 11 builds.

This guide explains all three approaches, the Windows naming rules that can cause an error, restart behavior, and the separate requirements for domain-joined computers.

Choose the right renaming method

All three methods change the computer name Windows uses to identify the device, but they suit different situations. Settings is the practical choice for most home and small-office users. PowerShell is faster when you are comfortable with commands or need a repeatable procedure. System Properties can help when you prefer the older Windows interface, but it is a legacy option rather than the clearest current path.

Method Best for What to know
Settings Most Windows 11 users Microsoft’s documented consumer procedure; no command required. Microsoft Support documents the path.
PowerShell Command-line users, technicians and administrators Uses the built-in Rename-Computer cmdlet; naming rules, restart behavior and domain credentials still apply. See the Microsoft PowerShell reference.
System Properties Users familiar with the classic dialog A legacy interface commonly opened with sysdm.cpl. Current Windows 11 layouts and availability can vary, especially on managed PCs.

For an Active Directory workstation or member server, renaming is an administrative operation rather than a routine consumer change. The netdom renamecomputer command is intended for that domain context and must be handled from an elevated prompt; it is not a substitute for the simple Settings procedure.

Prepare a valid Windows computer name

Windows will reject a name that violates its computer-name rules. Before opening a tool, decide on a short, recognizable name and check it against these limits documented for Rename-Computer:

  • Use letters, numbers and hyphens.
  • Do not use spaces or periods.
  • Do not make the entire name out of digits.
  • Keep the name at 63 characters or fewer.

Use a name that is easy to distinguish from your other devices, such as a room, role or asset convention approved by your organization. Microsoft lists three practical reasons to rename a device: separating multiple PCs that otherwise have confusing default names, removing identifying hints from a default name, and applying a consistent naming convention across an organization. Changing a visible name provides only limited obscurity; it is not a security control and does not protect an account, files or network services.

If the PC is managed by an employer or school, check its naming policy first. Device-management rules, permissions and domain membership can override what a local user is allowed to do. Save open documents before any restart, because both the Settings workflow and the PowerShell workflow may require one before the new name is fully active.

Method 1: Rename the PC in Settings

This is the recommended route for most Windows 11 installations because it is visible, easy to undo if you make a typing mistake, and directly documented by Microsoft for Windows 11 and Windows 10.

  1. Open Settings. You can select it from the Start menu or use the normal Windows shortcut for opening Settings.
  2. Select System in the left navigation.
  3. Open About.
  4. Select Rename this PC.
  5. Type the new computer name. Check the spelling and the character rules before continuing.
  6. Select Next.
  7. Choose Restart now or Restart later. Those are the restart choices specified in Microsoft Support’s procedure, “Rename Your Windows Device”: Microsoft Support says, “Select Restart now or Restart later.”

If you choose Restart later, Windows may continue displaying the old name in some places until the restart occurs. Finish your work, close applications and restart when convenient. If you choose Restart now, Windows closes the session immediately, so do not use that option while an unsaved task is running.

When Settings is the best choice

  • You are renaming a personally owned Windows 11 PC.
  • You want to see the exact name field and restart decision rather than remember a command.
  • You do not need to rename several machines through a script.

A work or school computer may show the option but still refuse the change or require authorization. That is a policy or permissions issue, not evidence that the Windows 11 procedure is wrong.

Method 2: Rename the PC with PowerShell

PowerShell provides a built-in cmdlet named Rename-Computer. It is useful when you prefer a concise command, are working through a documented administration checklist, or need to repeat the same operation on multiple local systems.

Basic local rename

  1. Open PowerShell. Use an account with the permissions required by your PC’s configuration; managed computers may restrict local renaming.
  2. Run the following command, replacing NewName with the name you want:
Rename-Computer -NewName "NewName"
  1. Restart Windows when prompted by your normal workflow or when the change needs to take effect. Microsoft notes that a restart is often required for the rename to become active.

The command changes the local computer name; it does not bypass Windows naming rules. A name containing a space or period, a name made only of digits, or a name longer than 63 characters can fail validation.

Request the restart from the command

You can ask the cmdlet to restart the computer as part of the operation by adding -Restart:

Rename-Computer -NewName "NewName" -Restart

Save work before running this form. The restart is not merely cosmetic: Microsoft’s reference explains that a restart is often needed before the new name is reflected throughout the system. If you omit -Restart, you remain responsible for restarting at an appropriate time.

Domain-joined computers and credentials

Renaming a domain-joined computer is different from renaming a standalone home PC. The Microsoft cmdlet reference states that explicit domain credentials are required to rename a domain-joined computer. Follow your organization’s IT process for the account, approval and timing rather than embedding credentials in an ad-hoc command.

PowerShell is therefore a good fit for an administrator who already knows the machine’s management context, but it is not a way around domain policy. If the command reports an authorization or domain error, confirm that the PC is allowed to change its name and that the required domain credentials are being supplied through the approved process.

Method 3: Use the legacy System Properties dialog

Windows still exposes a classic System Properties dialog on many installations. A common way to open it is to run:

sysdm.cpl

In the dialog, users traditionally select the Computer Name tab and then use its change controls to edit the computer name. This route can be familiar to long-time Windows users, but treat it as an optional legacy method:

  • The official material for this guide does not verify an identical, current Windows 11 walkthrough for every edition or build.
  • The dialog may be unavailable, restricted or presented differently on a managed computer.
  • Organization permissions and domain policy can prevent the change even when the dialog opens.

If the legacy dialog does not expose the expected controls, stop there and use the documented Settings path or ask the administrator responsible for the device. Do not assume that a missing button means the PC cannot be renamed; it may simply be governed by policy.

Domain administration: when netdom renamecomputer applies

Microsoft documents netdom renamecomputer for domain workstations and member servers when the Active Directory Domain Services tools or Remote Server Administration Tools are available. It must be run from an elevated command prompt and can use domain credentials. This is an administrative domain procedure, not a routine alternative for a personal Windows 11 laptop.

Do not use netdom renamecomputer casually on a domain controller. Microsoft warns that applying it to a domain controller can impair the controller’s domain function. Domain-controller renaming follows the dedicated netdom computername procedure instead, with the safeguards and permissions expected by the domain administrator. If you are unsure whether a machine is a member server, workstation or domain controller, ask the organization’s administrator before running any domain command.

Troubleshoot a failed or incomplete rename

The name is rejected immediately

Recheck every character. Remove spaces and periods, use only letters, numbers and hyphens, make sure the name is not all digits, and keep it within the 63-character maximum. Correct the name in Settings or in the PowerShell command and try again.

The old name still appears

Restart the PC. Microsoft says a restart is often required after Rename-Computer, and the Settings workflow explicitly asks you to choose between restarting now and later. If you deliberately postponed the restart, the rename may not be fully applied yet.

The control is missing or unavailable

On a work or school PC, management policy or insufficient permissions may limit renaming. Use the organization’s process instead of repeatedly trying local tools. A local administrator account does not automatically grant authority to change a domain-managed identity.

PowerShell reports a domain or credential problem

For a domain-joined computer, confirm that the approved domain credentials and administrative permissions are available. The PowerShell reference specifically distinguishes domain renames from local renames; ask IT to perform the change if you do not administer the domain.

You are considering a domain command on a server

First establish whether the server is a domain controller. The documented warning for netdom renamecomputer is especially important here: do not use that command for a domain controller. Use the dedicated domain-controller procedure through the responsible administrator.

Which approach should you use?

For a normal Windows 11 home computer, use Settings > System > About > Rename this PC. It gives you the clearest confirmation and restart choice. Choose PowerShell when a command is more convenient or when you are administering systems and understand the local or domain permissions involved. Keep System Properties as a fallback for the classic interface, not as the primary documented route. Domain workstations and member servers belong in an administrator-managed process, and domain controllers require their own procedure.
