For a federal campaign-finance record, you generally cannot delete your name yourself. Contact the political committee that filed the report and request a correction or update. The committee must submit an amended report for the FEC’s individual-contributor database to change. The Federal Election Commission says the original filing remains public. If the entry is from a state or local system, an IRS political-organization filing, a campaign website, or a data broker, a different owner and procedure apply.
Start by identifying which record you found
“Political donation records” are not one national database. Before asking anyone to remove information, determine who published the entry and which field you want changed. The filing system controls both the correction process and whether any privacy remedy is available.

Save the committee name, report name or coverage period, contribution date and amount, transaction ID if shown, and the exact URL or screenshot. Also note whether the problem is a factual error (for example, a misspelled name) or a privacy request about accurate information. That distinction determines the realistic remedy.
How to correct a name or other field in an FEC report
The federal route is an amendment by the filing committee, not a self-service deletion request to the FEC.

1. Verify that the entry is federal
Use the FEC’s individual-contributor search or the report image to confirm that the record belongs to a federal candidate committee, political action committee, or party committee. Check the committee identification number and the report in which the transaction appears. A state filing can look similar but follows different rules.
2. Identify the precise error
Write down the published value and the correct value. Specify whether the problem concerns the contributor’s name, mailing address, occupation, employer, amount, date, or an attribution such as a joint contribution. If the record is not yours, explain that clearly and provide evidence showing the mix-up, such as a bank statement or the campaign’s receipt. Do not send more personal information than the committee needs to verify the transaction.
3. Contact the committee that filed the report
Use the committee’s official contact information in its FEC filing. Ask the treasurer or compliance contact to submit an amended report correcting the transaction. The FEC’s correction guidance directs contributors to the filing committee because only that committee can amend its report.

A concise request can look like this:
Subject: Request to correct contribution reported to the FEC
I am contacting you about the contribution listed in [report name and coverage period],
transaction [ID, if shown], dated [date] for [amount]. The report currently lists
[incorrect field and value]. The correct information is [correct value].
Please review the entry and, if appropriate, file an amended report with the FEC.
Please confirm when the amendment has been submitted.Keep a copy of your request and any response. A committee may need to verify the contribution before filing; that review does not itself change the public record.

4. Wait for the amended report to be processed
After the committee files an amendment, check the amended report and the FEC individual-contributor database. The database can update when the amended filing is received and processed. The timing depends on when the committee submits the amendment and when the FEC processes it; no instant removal is promised.
5. Understand the result
An amendment corrects the committee’s current report data. It does not erase the earlier filing. The FEC’s 2018 “Sale or use of contributor information” guidance states: “However, the original report will remain on the public record.” A request to the FEC, deletion of a fundraising account, or removal of a campaign webpage therefore cannot guarantee that every historical copy disappears.
Why a federal donation may be listed publicly
Federal disclosure rules explain why an individual’s information can appear in a report. The FEC says committees generally itemize an individual’s name, address, occupation, and employer when the person gives more than $200 to a candidate campaign during the applicable election cycle. For PACs and party committees, the comparable period is generally the calendar year. These are disclosure thresholds, not a guarantee that every smaller payment is anonymous in every system or that state jurisdictions use the same limits.
The FEC also says federal campaign-finance reports are made public on its website within 48 hours of receipt. That rapid publication means a correction request may arrive after the original entry has already been downloaded, indexed, or copied by other services.

Can the FEC redact a contributor’s name for safety reasons?
Do not assume that a threat or harassment concern currently gives you a way to remove your name from an FEC filing. On December 19, 2024, the FEC published a notice of proposed rulemaking describing a possible process for modifying or redacting limited contributor details when disclosure creates a reasonable probability of threats, harassment, or reprisals. The proposal covered a contributor’s mailing address, occupation, or employer name; it did not include the contributor’s name.
The described procedure was only a proposal. It contemplated identifying the published report, submitting a sworn and notarized request with facts supporting the claimed risk, and obtaining an affirmative vote from at least four commissioners. Those proposed requirements were not an operative right to have information hidden.
FEC seminar materials from 2025 stated that no final rule had been issued at that time. Rulemaking status can change, so anyone relying on a safety-based request should check the current FEC rulemaking docket and read the text in force before acting. Even if a later rule changes treatment of an address, occupation, or employer, the 2024 proposal did not provide a name-redaction route.
State and local campaign-finance records
The FEC administers federal campaign-finance rules and says it does not have jurisdiction over state or local campaign-finance rules. A state legislature, election board, ethics commission, county, or city may set its own itemization threshold, amendment form, public-access system, and confidentiality exceptions.

For a state or local entry:
- Read the record’s header to identify the jurisdiction, filing entity, and reporting period.
- Locate the filing agency’s correction, amendment, or data-quality instructions.
- Contact the committee and the agency if the agency requires the committee to file an amended report.
- Ask whether the agency replaces the displayed record, preserves a version history, or only posts the amendment alongside the original.
- If you are requesting protection because of threats, ask specifically which statutory safety or confidentiality exception applies and what evidence is required.
Do not transfer the federal “more than $200” threshold or the 48-hour publication statement to a state or city without verifying that jurisdiction’s rules.
IRS Form 8872 is a separate disclosure system
Certain tax-exempt political organizations report contributions on IRS Form 8872 rather than an FEC campaign-finance report. The IRS describes public disclosure of a contributor’s name and address, and for individual contributors the occupation and employer, when contributions reach $200 or more in aggregate during a calendar year. The relevant forms must be made publicly available by the organization.
Confirm the filing entity before contacting the FEC. An FEC amendment cannot update an IRS Form 8872 filing. Ask the political organization how it handles an incorrect entry and consult the IRS instructions for the applicable form and reporting period. If the same donation appears in both systems, each record owner must be addressed separately.

What to do about campaign websites and copied databases
Campaign or fundraising website
If your name appears on a campaign’s donor-recognition page, receipt page, email, or downloadable list, request a change from the campaign or the service that publishes that page. Ask the publisher to remove the webpage or correct the entry, but treat that as a separate action from amending an FEC report. A website edit does not revise a government filing.

Third-party database or search result
After a federal report is public, other sites may copy it. Contact each independent publisher under its correction or privacy policy. Search engines may continue to show an old snippet until they recrawl a page, and the FEC does not control those indexes. The existence of a copied record does not mean the committee can delete it, nor does an FEC amendment guarantee that every copy updates.
The FEC warns that contributor data copied from its reports may not be sold or used for commercial purposes or to solicit donations. That warning concerns how the data is used; it is not a promise that a lawful copy will be erased from every service.
Choose the right response for your situation

If you are facing threats, harassment, or reprisals
Preserve threatening messages, incident reports, and any other concrete evidence. Tell the filing committee and the responsible agency that the request is safety-related, and ask which current procedure applies. Do not rely on summaries of the 2024 FEC proposal: it was limited to address, occupation, and employer information and required a formal, sworn request plus commissioner approval if adopted. The 2025 seminar status said no final rule had issued then, so verify the current docket before claiming that a federal redaction process is available.

If there is an immediate danger, contact local law enforcement or an appropriate victim-support service. A campaign-finance amendment request is not an emergency response and will not instantly remove a public entry.
Checklist before you send a request
- Identify whether the source is an FEC report, state or local filing, IRS Form 8872, campaign page, or third-party copy.
- Record the filing committee or organization, report period, transaction date, amount, and transaction identifier.
- State the exact field and value that is wrong, or explain that you are making a privacy or safety request about an accurate entry.
- Send a correction request to the filing committee for an FEC report; do not expect the FEC to amend a committee’s filing on your behalf.
- Keep copies of your request, supporting documents, and the committee’s response.
- Check the amended report and the FEC database after processing.
- Contact independent websites separately if they copied the information.
- Do not assume that deleting a donor account, changing a campaign webpage, or requesting a search-engine cache removal changes the original government filing.

“Can I remove my name from FEC records?”
