To remove your home address from people-search sites, search for your own profiles, submit each site’s opt-out request, and repeat the process whenever a listing returns. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes people-search sites as a type of data broker: they can combine broker data with public social-media information and government records, then display current or past addresses and relatives’ names and addresses. An opt-out can hide a broker’s profile, but it does not erase the underlying public record or guarantee that the listing will never reappear.
This guide explains the free do-it-yourself process, how paid removal services differ, California’s centralized DROP option, safety protections for qualifying California residents, and the limits that apply in every state.
What an opt-out actually removes
People-search sites assemble searchable profiles from multiple sources. The FTC’s July 2022 consumer guidance says, “People search sites are a type of data broker.” A profile may contain your name, phone number, current address, former addresses, age range, relatives, and associates. The broker may have obtained those details from other brokers, public social-media information, or government records.
An opt-out is a request that a particular broker stop displaying or selling a profile about you. It is not the same as deleting every source record. If an address comes from a county property record, court filing, voter file, or another government database, removing the broker’s copy does not remove that government record. The same information can therefore remain discoverable through the source or through another broker.

- What can improve: The specific people-search profile you identify can be suppressed or removed according to that site’s policy.
- What may remain: Public records, profiles about relatives or associates, and listings held by sites you have not contacted.
- What can happen later: A profile may return when an underlying record changes or a broker obtains a fresh data feed. Periodic checking is part of the process.
Do not expect one request to cover the entire people-search industry. Treat every broker as a separate record holder unless a legitimate centralized program covers it.
Free DIY removal: the repeatable workflow
1. Search for your profiles
Start with the major people-search sites and search using combinations of identifying details. The FTC recommends beginning with information such as your phone number or address. Useful combinations include:
- Your full name and current city or state.
- Your full name and a current or former street address.
- Your phone number, including an older number you once used.
- Your name plus a relative’s name when a result appears to connect households.
Open results carefully and confirm that a profile is actually yours. Common names can produce false matches. Keep a private tracking list with the site’s name, the profile URL or identifier, the date you found it, and the status of your request. Do not publish that list or leave it in a shared document.

Look for links labeled “opt out,” “remove my information,” “privacy,” “do not sell or share,” or “consumer choices.” The location and wording differ by company. If the control is hard to find, search the site’s name together with “opt out” or “remove my information,” which is the discovery method suggested by the FTC.
Use the site’s own instructions rather than assuming that a procedure from another broker will work. Some sites ask you to locate a matching profile first; others provide a separate privacy form. The available fields, confirmation method, and processing time can differ.
3. Submit the request and complete required verification
Follow the site’s form exactly and record the confirmation number, email, or screen showing that the request was submitted. Verification requirements are site-specific. A broker may ask you to confirm an email address or provide enough identifying information to distinguish your record from someone else’s.

Give only the information the site’s process requires to identify the correct profile. Read the form before submitting so you know whether you are requesting removal from a public profile, opting out of sale, or making another privacy request. Those choices are not always identical.

4. Repeat for every site where you appear
DIY opt-outs can be completed for free, one site at a time. Work through the tracking list rather than stopping after the first successful removal. A site that does not display your profile today may add one later, so keep the list for future checks.
5. Confirm the result
After the site’s stated processing period, search again using the same name, address, and phone-number combinations. If the profile is still visible, check whether the site requires a second confirmation step or a different form. Save correspondence so you can show when the original request was made.
6. Recheck on a schedule
The FTC advises consumers to periodically check people-search sites and submit a new opt-out request when new information appears. There is no universal interval that fits every broker. A practical approach is to put a recurring reminder on your calendar and to check sooner after moving, changing a phone number, buying or selling property, or noticing a new public filing.
7. Handle the source record separately when necessary
If a listing is populated from a government record, the broker opt-out will not delete that source. Determine which agency maintains the record and review that agency’s correction, confidentiality, sealing, or address-substitution rules. Those remedies depend on the record type and your jurisdiction; they are separate from a people-search opt-out.

DIY opt-outs versus a paid removal service
A paid service can save repetitive labor, but it cannot promise permanent deletion from every data source. The FTC recommends evaluating coverage, reporting, monitoring frequency, and identity-verification practices before paying.

| Factor | DIY opt-outs | Paid removal service |
|---|---|---|
| Out-of-pocket cost | Free according to the FTC’s consumer guidance. | Pricing varies by provider; there is no single industry price. |
| Number of sites | You submit requests one site at a time and decide which sites to handle. | Coverage varies. Compare the provider’s stated number and type of sites, not a general promise to remove “everything.” |
| Reporting | You maintain your own list and confirmation records. | Check whether the service identifies the sites it contacted and shows request status. |
| Monitoring and rescans | You search again on your own schedule. | Compare how often it rescans for reappearing or newly added data and how it alerts you. |
| Identity verification | Each broker may require its own verification. | The service may need identifying information to submit requests on your behalf. Review what it collects and why. |
| Guarantee | No permanent-removal guarantee; listings can return. | No service should be treated as a guarantee against reappearance or against public records remaining available. |
Choose DIY when you can perform occasional searches and keep records. Consider paying only when the time involved is the main problem and the service’s coverage, reporting, and scan schedule justify the cost. Before enrolling, read how to cancel, what information the service retains, and whether its monitoring includes the sites that matter to you.
California DROP: one request to registered brokers
California residents have a centralized option called DROP, administered by the California Privacy Protection Agency. The agency says the service is free and allows an eligible California resident to send one deletion request to more than 600 registered data brokers. This is different from visiting each people-search site individually.
Eligibility and setup
DROP is limited to California residents. The flow includes verifying California residency, creating a profile with basic information you choose, and submitting the deletion request. Verification is part of eligibility; it is not an optional shortcut around a broker’s identity checks.

Implementation dates and status timing
| Detail | California agency information current October 13, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Platform launch | January 1, 2026. |
| Broker processing began | August 1, 2026. |
| Broker access requirement | Beginning August 1, 2026, registered brokers must access DROP at least once every 45 days to begin processing deletion requests. |
| Status updates | May take up to 90 days to appear and can vary by broker. |
| Initial cycle expectation | The agency says all brokers should have completed their initial download/upload cycle by November 2026. |
Because these are live implementation details, check the California Privacy Protection Agency’s current DROP instructions before submitting or interpreting a request. A delayed status does not necessarily mean that a request was rejected; the agency specifically warns that updates can take up to 90 days.
What DROP does and does not replace
DROP can reduce the number of separate requests to registered brokers, but it does not erase government source records, cover every possible data holder, or eliminate the need to check for new listings. Continue searching for profiles outside the registered-broker scope and follow up when information reappears.
California safety option: Safe at Home
People facing a qualifying threat may need more than ordinary broker opt-outs. California’s Safe at Home program is run by the Secretary of State, and the California Department of Justice describes eligibility for victims of domestic violence, stalking, sexual assault, child abduction, elder or dependent-adult abuse, or human trafficking. The program also covers certain people experiencing threats connected with reproductive or gender-affirming health-care facilities or public-entity work.

Safe at Home has eligibility criteria and specific confidentiality protections. California describes statutory protections against public display of a participant’s home address and phone number in specified circumstances. It is not a general service for every California resident and does not automatically replace requests to private people-search sites. Review the official program’s current eligibility rules and application instructions before relying on it.

Do not post your address while seeking help or use a public comment section to ask for removal. Contact the Safe at Home program or an appropriate local support organization through an official channel, and follow its instructions for protecting documentation and communications. The program determines eligibility; an ordinary opt-out request does not provide the same statutory protections.
Why state privacy rights differ
There is no single U.S. opt-out deadline or entitlement that applies to everyone. Rights depend on your state, the type of data, the business involved, and statutory exceptions. California’s DROP is a centralized state program, not a nationwide process.
For example, the Texas Attorney General’s current privacy summary describes rights to delete personal data and opt out of sale in specified circumstances, while also listing exceptions and limits. That example should not be read as a rule for residents of other states. Check the current consumer-privacy guidance from your own state regulator to determine whether a law applies, which businesses are covered, and what verification or response deadlines exist.

The profile is still visible after you opted out
Verify that you used the site’s current form, completed every confirmation step, and waited through the period stated by the site. Search the exact name, phone number, and address combination again. If the profile remains, submit the site’s follow-up or privacy request and keep the original confirmation.
A relative’s profile still shows your address
Your opt-out generally concerns the profile you identified. Information about you can remain in a relative’s or associate’s report, and a broker may connect the same address to multiple people. Locate the separate report and follow that site’s process for the person and profile involved. An opt-out from your own record does not automatically remove another person’s listing.

The address returns months later
Reappearance is a known limitation because brokers refresh data from changing underlying records. Record the new listing, submit another opt-out, and add the site to your recurring check. A previous confirmation proves that a request was made; it does not make the suppression permanent.
You cannot find the opt-out page
Search the site’s name plus “opt out” or “remove my information,” as the FTC recommends. Check the site’s privacy and consumer-choice pages, and make sure the result is the same company rather than an unrelated form. Save the page or confirmation used for the request.
You expected the source record to disappear
A broker removal affects the broker’s display, not the government database that supplied the information. If the source record itself is inaccurate or eligible for confidentiality treatment, contact the agency that maintains it and use that agency’s process.
You are unsure whether a paid service is doing enough
Ask for a list of covered sites, a report showing completed and unresolved requests, and the rescan frequency. Compare those details with the sites you found yourself. Treat claims of permanent or universal removal cautiously because new data can be collected after a service finishes its first round.
A maintenance checklist
- Keep a private inventory of every profile, request date, confirmation, and result.
- Search with your name plus current and former addresses, cities, and phone numbers.
- Submit a separate request for each broker that displays your information.
- Recheck periodically and after major changes such as a move or new phone number.
- Check relatives’ or associates’ reports when your address remains connected to them.
- Separate broker opt-outs from remedies aimed at the original government or public record.
- Use California DROP if you are an eligible California resident and want one request sent to registered brokers.
- If you face a qualifying California safety threat, review Safe at Home rather than relying only on ordinary opt-outs.
- Review your state’s current privacy guidance before asserting a legal deletion or sale opt-out right.
What a realistic result looks like
A successful effort makes your address harder to find on the specific people-search profiles you targeted; it does not make the address nonexistent everywhere. The most reliable strategy is a documented cycle: search, submit the correct site-specific request, verify the result, and repeat when data returns. California residents can reduce the manual workload through DROP, while people with qualifying safety concerns should investigate Safe at Home’s separate protections.
