Blot the wine immediately with a clean, absorbent cloth—never scrub—then identify the boot’s leather finish before using any cleaner. For compatible smooth leather, a shoe-specific shampoo or foam cleaner may be used sparingly according to the manufacturer’s directions. Waterproof, oiled, suede, and nubuck boots require different care, and no method guarantees complete removal.
How do I remove wine stains from leather boots?
Start by lifting as much liquid as possible. Press a clean, absorbent cloth against the mark, replace the wet section of cloth as needed, and continue blotting until no more wine transfers easily. Rubbing can spread the stain and work pigment deeper into the finish.
Next, check the boot’s care label, product page, or material description. “Leather” is not one uniform surface: smooth or full-grain leather, waterproof leather, oiled or dry-tanned leather, suede, and nubuck react differently to moisture and cleaners. Collonil’s shoe-care guidance, published 29 March 2018, summarizes the issue this way: “Different types of stains and different types of leather require unique approaches to stain removal.”
Only after identifying the finish should you choose a treatment. If the maker permits a compatible shoe shampoo or foam cleaner, use a small amount, test it on a hidden area, and follow the product label. Let the boot dry under the maker’s conditions before deciding whether further care is appropriate.

What to do in the first few minutes
- Remove the boot from the spill. Keep additional wine from contacting the leather or soaking into seams and lining.
- Blot, do not wipe. Use a clean, absorbent cloth and lift the liquid vertically from the surface. Avoid vigorous rubbing, paper towels that shed fibers, or colored cloths that could transfer dye.
- Check the finish. Look for terms such as full-grain, smooth, waterproof, oil-tanned, dry-tanned, suede, or nubuck. If the material is not identified, pause before applying a wet cleaner.
- Read the boot maker’s instructions. A care label or model-specific guide takes priority over a generic stain-removal recipe.
- Remove removable dirt only when appropriate. For dry debris, use the brush type recommended for that finish. Do not brush a wet wine mark as a universal treatment.
Freshness matters because liquid left on the surface is easier to lift than a mark that has dried into the finish. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal procedure or success rate for old wine stains.
Match the treatment to the leather finish
| Boot finish | Supported care path | What the guidance does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth or full-grain leather | After blotting, use a compatible shoe shampoo or a small amount of foam cleaner if the maker permits it. Work gently, avoid saturation, remove residue, dry, and condition when instructed. | No manufacturer cited here guarantees that every wine mark will disappear or that the original color will return. |
| Waterproof leather | SOREL’s general care directions recommend removing dirt with a medium-bristle leather brush, wiping with a damp cloth, and drying in a cool, dry place. Use a wine-specific cleaner only if the boot maker allows it. | The SOREL directions are general waterproof-footwear care, not a wine-specific stain recipe. |
| Oiled or dry-tanned leather | SOREL recommends a clean cloth with a little leather cleaner, followed by a damp-cloth wipe to remove residue and cool, dry-place drying. Red Wing’s oil-tanned guide similarly describes water and brushing for dirt, foam cleaner for heavier soiling, wiping, drying, conditioning, and protection. | These instructions support routine care; they do not prove a particular treatment will remove red wine. |
| Suede or nubuck | SOREL lists a soft brush for removing debris. Keep liquid treatments out unless the boot maker provides a specific stain procedure for that material. | The cited guidance supplies no wine-stain liquid-cleaning method for suede or nubuck. |
If the boot has a coated, painted, metallic, or unusually delicate finish, treat it as a special case and obtain model-specific advice before wet cleaning.
Smooth and full-grain leather: a cautious cleaning procedure
Use a shoe-specific shampoo when the maker permits it
Collonil specifically recommends its shoe shampoo for red wine and other water-soluble marks on leather shoes. After blotting, apply the shampoo to the stain, allow it to remain for the dwell period directed by the product, then wipe away the mark and remaining shampoo with a wet sponge. This is manufacturer guidance for compatible leather shoes, not a promise that every boot will be restored.
Recommended Free Tools
Before treating the visible mark, test the shampoo on an inconspicuous area such as the inside of the shaft or under the tongue. Wait for that test area to dry and inspect it for color change, a ring, loss of sheen, or texture change. Do not proceed if the hidden test produces an unacceptable result.
Use foam cleaner sparingly
Danner’s full-grain leather guidance says to work a small amount of foam cleaner gently into the leather without saturating it, then remove excess solution with a soft cloth. Follow the cleaner’s own directions for dispensing and dwell time. The goal is controlled surface cleaning, not soaking the boot.
- Place the boot on a protected, level surface and remove laces if they obstruct the stained panel.
- Blot again if any liquid remains on the surface.
- Apply a small quantity of the approved shoe shampoo or foam to a cloth, sponge, or the leather as the product instructions specify.
- Work only the affected area with gentle motions. Keep the surrounding leather as dry as practical so you do not create a larger damp boundary.
- Remove cleaner and loosened residue with the damp sponge or soft cloth specified by the product directions.
- Inspect the leather while it is still damp, but postpone any judgment about final color until it has dried completely.
If the stain remains after one careful, label-compliant treatment, do not repeatedly re-wet the boot in an attempt to force a result. Repeated moisture can alter color, finish, or shape.

Waterproof leather boots
Waterproof construction does not mean the outer leather is immune to staining or that every household cleaner is safe. SOREL’s product-care information recommends a medium-bristle leather brush for dirt, a damp-cloth wipe, and drying in a cool, dry place. Those steps are general care guidance rather than a direct wine-removal formula.

After blotting wine, use only a cleaner that the boot maker identifies as compatible with the waterproof leather and membrane system. Apply it to the exterior in a controlled amount; avoid flooding seams, gussets, and the lining. Do not assume that a cleaner suitable for ordinary full-grain leather is suitable for a waterproof laminate or treated surface.
When wiping with a damp cloth, use the minimum moisture needed to remove cleaner residue. Keep the boot upright and allow air to circulate while it dries. Do not use a radiator, hair dryer, oven, or other concentrated heat source, which can accelerate drying unevenly and stress leather, adhesives, or waterproof components.
Oiled or dry-tanned leather
Oiled and dry-tanned leathers are designed to contain conditioning oils, so a wine mark may appear different as the surface absorbs moisture. SOREL recommends using a clean cloth with a little leather cleaner, wiping away residue with a damp cloth, and drying in a cool, dry place. Red Wing’s oil-tanned care guide supports a similar maintenance sequence: warm water and brushing for dirt, foam cleaner for heavier soiling, wiping, drying, conditioning, and protection.
Neither source presents that routine as a guaranteed wine-stain cure. Begin with blotting and a hidden-area test. If the maker permits foam or leather cleaner, use a small quantity and avoid saturating the panel. A broad wet patch can dry with a visible boundary, especially on an oil-rich finish.

Suede and nubuck: do not generalize smooth-leather methods
Suede and nubuck have a nap that can be flattened, darkened, or left with a tide mark by liquid. The cited SOREL guidance lists a soft brush for removing debris but does not provide a wine-stain liquid-cleaning procedure. That absence matters: a shampoo-and-sponge method supported for some smooth leather should not automatically be transferred to a napped surface.
Once you have blotted the spill, let the boot maker’s instructions determine the next step. If the care guide does not address wine, stop before applying household liquids, laundry products, oils, or conditioners. For an expensive, light-colored, or unfinished pair, a leather-care professional familiar with suede and nubuck is the safer escalation.
Do not aggressively brush a wet stain. Brushing is useful for dry debris and for restoring nap only when the material is dry and the brush is appropriate for that nap.

Dry naturally under the care instructions
SOREL recommends a cool, dry place for waterproof and oiled or dry-tanned footwear. Danner likewise directs users to let cleaned full-grain boots dry before conditioning. Remove excess surface moisture with a soft cloth, open the boot, and let air move around it. Keep the pair away from direct heat and do not put it in a clothes dryer.
Dry both boots under the same conditions even if only one was stained. Unequal moisture exposure can leave the pair with different sheen or color. Do not judge the final appearance until the leather is fully dry.
Condition only when the finish calls for it
Danner recommends conditioning full-grain leather after cleaning and drying, while warning that conditioner may darken the leather slightly. Test the conditioner in a hidden area first, then apply a thin, even layer if the result is acceptable and the boot maker permits that product. Remove excess according to the conditioner’s instructions.

Waterproof, suede, and nubuck boots may require different protectors or no conditioner at all. Use the product category specified for the finish rather than treating every leather boot as interchangeable.
Products and household treatments to avoid
Do not use laundry stain remover
OxiClean’s wine-stain instructions explicitly exclude leather. Its separate upholstery directions apply to water-washable upholstery, not leather boots. Therefore, those directions do not establish that the product is safe for any boot finish. Do not substitute a laundry stain remover because it worked on a washable shirt, carpet, or upholstery.
Avoid improvised solvents and aggressive scrubbing
The manufacturer instructions cited here do not authorize household solvents, abrasive powders, chlorine products, alcohol, or acidic kitchen remedies for leather boots. Such treatments can strip dye, alter the finish, spread the stain, or leave a ring. Scrubbing with a rough brush or sponge can damage smooth leather and permanently change the nap of suede or nubuck.
Do not assume conditioner will erase wine
Conditioner replenishes or supports the feel of some leathers after cleaning; it does not have an established universal ability to remove wine pigment. Applying more product to hide a mark can darken the entire panel and make the original contrast harder to assess.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if the stain is already dry
A dried mark may have penetrated the finish or interacted with the boot’s dye. Begin by removing loose surface dirt with the finish-appropriate method, then check the care instructions and perform a hidden-area test. For smooth or full-grain leather that permits a shoe shampoo or foam cleaner, follow the same restrained process described above, using the product label’s dwell period and no more moisture than necessary.

Troubleshooting common outcomes
The stain looks larger while the boot is wet
Moisture temporarily changes how leather reflects light and can make a damp boundary look larger. Remove residue as directed, let the boot dry naturally, and inspect it only after drying. Do not add another cleaner solely because the wet outline looks alarming.
The leather became darker
Some cleaners and conditioners darken leather, and Danner specifically warns that conditioner may darken full-grain leather slightly. Stop adding product, allow the boot to dry fully, and compare it with the hidden-area test. If the change remains unacceptable, seek finish-specific professional advice rather than trying to bleach or strip the surface.
A ring or tide mark appeared
A ring usually indicates uneven wetting or residue. Do not repeatedly soak the boot. Follow the maker’s instructions for removing cleaner residue, dry the boot evenly, and ask the maker or a professional whether the finish can be blended safely.

Do not brush suede or nubuck while it is wet. Let it dry completely, then use only the soft brush and direction specified for that material. If the nap remains damaged or the wine color persists, stop home treatment and obtain professional care.
The mark remains after one approved cleaning
Persistence does not mean that a stronger chemical is safe. Record the boot’s finish, cleaner used, and result, then contact the manufacturer or a leather-care professional. This is especially important for unfinished, light-colored, suede, nubuck, or high-value boots.
A simple decision path
- Fresh spill, finish known: blot immediately, test the maker-approved cleaner, and use the finish-specific method.
- Fresh spill, finish unknown: blot only until you confirm the material; avoid wet cleaners.
- Smooth or full-grain leather with approval for shampoo or foam: use a small amount, avoid saturation, remove residue, dry, and condition only if directed.
- Waterproof leather: follow the waterproof-boot care guide and protect seams and membranes from excess water.
- Oiled or dry-tanned leather: use the specified cleaner sparingly, wipe residue, dry cool, and condition only after drying if approved.
- Suede or nubuck: limit home care to the maker’s dry-brushing instructions unless a model-specific wine procedure exists.
- Any boot with a persistent mark or unacceptable color change: stop experimenting and consult the maker or a qualified leather-care professional.
What result should you expect?
Manufacturer guidance supports careful cleaning, not a universal restoration guarantee. Final results depend on how quickly the spill was blotted, whether the wine reached the grain or lining, the leather’s dye and finish, previous conditioners or waterproofing, and the age of the stain. A successful treatment may reduce the visible mark without returning the leather exactly to its original color.
The safest strategy is controlled first aid, finish identification, a hidden-area test, minimal moisture, and a clear stopping point. More product and more force are not reliable substitutes for a method matched to the boot’s construction.
