To remove smart-speaker voice data, delete the history at the provider that stored it—Google Account activity, Alexa Privacy, or HomePod Siri History—and then check separate recording apps and connected services. Turning off future voice-history saving is a different action: it generally does not erase recordings already held by the provider.
“Voice data” can include the audio clip, a transcript, typed assistant requests, account activity, or a recording created by another app. The steps below reflect official support documentation available on October 13, 2026; labels can vary by software version, region, and language.
Identify what you are deleting
Before pressing a delete button, decide which record you need to remove. A smart speaker request can create more than one data type, and each may have a different owner and deletion control.
- Audio recording: the captured sound file.
- Transcript: text generated from the request.
- Assistant activity: account history showing when a request occurred and what the assistant did.
- Typed request: text entered in an assistant app instead of spoken through the speaker.
- Action or service data: information sent to a third-party skill, action, smart-home service, shopping service, or other app.
- Separate recordings: files made in Voice Memos or another recording app, which are not part of the speaker assistant’s history.
There is no universal “cloud backup” folder for all of these records. Start with the account, app, or service that created the content, then use that provider’s own deletion control.

Where each major platform keeps its deletion control
| Platform | History location | What the documented delete action covers | Separate controls and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Assistant, Google Home, and Nest | Google Account > Data & privacy > Web & App Activity > Manage activity | Activity items marked with the audio icon; Google’s activity controls let you delete individual items or all activity. | Turning off Include voice and audio activity does not delete previously saved audio. Other Google services, on-device personalization, and third-party actions can hold related data. |
| Amazon Alexa and Echo | Alexa app > More > Alexa Privacy > Review Alexa History | Voice recordings, transcripts, and typed requests associated with the selected Amazon account. | Amazon says other interaction records may remain, including data used for reminders, orders, lists, tasks, messages, searches, preferences, or actions Alexa took. Smart-home device history is a separate category. |
| Apple HomePod and Siri | Home app on iPhone or iPad > HomePod settings > Siri History > Delete Siri History | Siri interactions currently associated with that HomePod. | Improve Siri & Dictation is a separate future sharing/improvement setting. Voice Memos in iCloud has its own deletion workflow. |
The table highlights why a single “delete voice data” instruction is misleading. Google’s control is account activity, Amazon’s review page combines several request formats, and Apple’s control is tied to an individual HomePod. A setting that limits future collection is also separate from each platform’s history deletion command.
Prepare before deleting anything
- Confirm the account. Sign in to the Google Account or Amazon account used by the speaker. In a shared home, another person may have used a different account.
- Confirm the household and device. Apple’s Siri History is associated with a particular HomePod; Google activity can include more than one assistant-enabled device.
- Decide whether you need audio, text, or both. A transcript or action record may not be the same object as the audio clip.
- List connected services. Check third-party assistant actions, skills, smart-home platforms, Voice Memos, and other recording apps separately.
- Save anything you legally or operationally need. Deletion can remove the history you use for troubleshooting, reminders, or an audit trail.
- Record the date and scope. Note which account, device, date range, and category you deleted. This helps distinguish an incomplete deletion from a record that belongs to another service.
Do not reset or sell the speaker as your first step. A factory reset changes the device, but the provider-side account history and a third-party service’s copy are controlled online.
Delete Google Assistant recordings and activity
Review and delete saved activity
- Sign in to the relevant Google Account.
- Open Data & privacy.
- Under activity settings, open Web & App Activity, then select Manage activity.
- Look for entries marked with the audio icon. Open an entry to inspect it; one activity can contain multiple recordings if more than one assistant-enabled device processed the same audio.
- Delete an individual item, or choose the all-time deletion option when you want to remove the available history for that account.
Google’s account instructions are at Google Account Help. Deleting from My Activity addresses the Google Account activity held there; it does not automatically reach every other service or a third-party action.
Use Google’s voice deletion commands
When voice control is available, Google documents commands such as Hey Google, delete today’s activity and Hey Google, delete my last conversation. If the assistant activated accidentally, the phrase Hey Google, that wasn’t for you deletes the last thing sent to Google from My Activity. See Google Assistant Help and Google Assistant privacy guidance for the documented commands and behavior.
Voice deletion is convenient for a recent mistake, but use the account page when you need to inspect dates, identify multiple recordings, or remove a larger range. Google says deleting all activity can take up to a day to propagate to other devices. During that period, another speaker or app may still display an item that has not finished updating.
Stop saving new voice and audio activity
- Return to Data & privacy > Web & App Activity.
- Turn off Include voice and audio activity.
Google states, “This voice and audio activity setting is off unless you choose to turn it on.” It also states, “If you turn this voice and audio activity setting off, previously saved audio is not deleted.” Therefore, use the activity deletion steps first for old records; use the toggle to change what is saved going forward. This switch should not be described as a purge, and turning it back on later does not restore items you deleted.
Check other Google and device locations
Google warns that audio can be stored elsewhere depending on settings, including Google Voice and YouTube. Some audio can also remain on the device for Voice Match or personalization. Muting the speaker’s hardware microphone switch, or turning off “Hey Google,” limits future activation but is not an eraser for account history. Google’s smart-speaker guidance also warns that third-party apps or actions may save activity related to their own services; see Google Home and Nest Help.

Delete Amazon Alexa and Echo voice history
Review and remove Alexa records
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap More.
- Choose Alexa Privacy.
- Open Review Alexa History.
- Review the entries associated with the Amazon account, then delete the recordings, transcripts, and typed requests you no longer want stored.
Amazon also provides an Alexa Privacy settings page through its Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs. Check which account the household’s Echo devices use before deleting; removing history from one account does not necessarily remove a separate household member’s history. If the app layout differs, use the Alexa Privacy page rather than relying on a similarly named device setting.
Understand what Amazon’s deletion does—and does not—promise
Amazon says deleting the voice recordings, transcripts, and typed requests removes those items from Amazon’s cloud. It also says other records associated with an interaction may remain. Examples include information supplied through a request, actions Alexa took, product searches, attachments, reminders, timers, alarms, orders, preferences, lists, tasks, and messages. Those records can support the related function, so “delete Alexa history” should not be treated as a guarantee that every record connected with a request disappears.
For example, removing the spoken request to set a reminder is different from removing the reminder itself; deleting a voice command that placed an order is different from removing the order record. Review the relevant Alexa feature if your goal includes those associated records.
Check smart-home device history separately
Smart-home status and usage information has its own control. In the Alexa app, go to More > Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data > Smart Home Device History. Amazon documents this area as a place to manage or automatically delete smart-home device history. It is separate from voice recordings and transcripts, so review it if your goal includes removing connected-device activity. Changing this setting does not substitute for deleting the voice history entries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsClear Siri history from an Apple HomePod
Delete the HomePod’s Siri interactions
- Open the Home app on an iPhone or iPad.
- Select the HomePod.
- Open the HomePod’s settings.
- Choose Siri History.
- Tap Delete Siri History.
Apple’s cited HomePod instructions apply to HomePod software version 27 or later. On earlier software, the labels or navigation can differ. Apple says a history of Siri interactions is stored on the HomePod and may be used to personalize Siri. The relevant guide is Apple’s HomePod privacy and security documentation.
Because the control is presented for a selected HomePod, repeat the check for each speaker whose history you want to address. Ensure you are a member of the correct Home and, where applicable, have organizer access before looking for the setting.
Turn off future Siri improvement sharing
Deletion and future sharing are separate. On HomePod, Improve Siri & Dictation matches the setting on the iPhone or iPad used to set up the speaker. A Home organizer can change it by touching and holding the HomePod in the Home app, opening Accessory Settings > Analytics & Improvements, and switching the setting off.

Apple says opting in allows it to store and review samples of audio, transcripts, and related request data. Turning this setting off changes future improvement-data sharing; use Delete Siri History to remove the history associated with the HomePod. Apple’s current explanation is dated June 2, 2026: Improve Siri & Dictation settings.

Apple says nothing is sent to Apple servers until HomePod recognizes “Hey Siri” or “Siri,” or until someone touches and holds the top before making a request. Apple describes communications as encrypted and says anonymous IDs protect identity, while also explicitly stating that interaction history is stored on HomePod. These are descriptions of Apple’s handling, not a promise that no voice data is ever stored. See Apple’s HomePod guide.
Remove recordings from iCloud and other cloud services
Do not treat a phone backup as the assistant’s history
A device backup is not a universal deletion command for provider-side assistant records. Deleting an entire iPhone or iPad backup does not, on the documented evidence, guarantee removal of Google Account activity, Alexa records, HomePod Siri History, or a third-party service’s copy. Delete content through the service that created it. Erasing a backup can also remove unrelated data you still need, making it a poor substitute for targeted deletion.
Delete Apple Voice Memos recordings stored in iCloud
Voice Memos is separate from HomePod Siri History. When Voice Memos uses iCloud, recordings can be stored there. To remove one permanently:
- Open the Voice Memos app and delete the recording.
- Open the app’s Recently Deleted folder.
- Select Delete Forever.
This workflow concerns Voice Memos files, not Siri requests handled by HomePod. Apple’s storage guidance is at Manage your iCloud storage. If a recording remains in Recently Deleted, it has not completed this permanent-delete step.

Review third-party assistants, actions, and recording apps
If a speaker request invoked a third-party action or skill, that service may have its own account activity, logs, recordings, transcripts, or retention rules. Open that provider’s privacy or account-activity page and use its deletion controls. Google specifically warns that audio may be saved in other locations, and Apple’s Voice Memos controls demonstrate why an app’s cloud library must be handled independently.
Also check services that received the result rather than the audio itself. A shopping, messaging, calendar, security-camera, or smart-home service may retain the action, attachment, order, task, or device event even after the assistant history is gone.

What to do when data still appears
The wrong account or household is open
Sign out and verify the account email, household, and device owner. In shared homes, repeat the check for every account that has used the speaker. A deletion performed in one account cannot be assumed to affect another.
Propagation has not finished
For Google, deletion of all activity can take up to a day to propagate to other devices. Wait, then refresh My Activity and the speaker’s app before concluding that the deletion failed. Avoid repeatedly issuing broad delete commands while a prior request is still processing.

You deleted audio but still see a related record
Check whether what remains is a transcript, typed request, action result, smart-home status record, reminder, order, list, or message. Amazon explicitly distinguishes deleted voice recordings, transcripts, and typed requests from other records that may support Alexa functions.
The item belongs to another app
Look in Voice Memos, a third-party action or skill, Google Voice, YouTube, or another recording service. Use that service’s own deletion workflow rather than repeating the smart-speaker history command.
You changed a future-saving setting instead of deleting history
Google’s Include voice and audio activity switch does not erase previously saved audio. On HomePod, Improve Siri & Dictation controls future improvement sharing, while Delete Siri History removes the HomePod’s associated history. Keep these actions distinct when verifying the result.
The menu name or location changed
Support instructions can lag behind an app update, and labels vary by language and region. Look for the provider’s privacy or activity area, confirm that the account is correct, and avoid selecting a similarly named device-reset option when you intend to delete cloud history.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Verify deletion without overclaiming
- Reopen the provider’s history page using the same account and confirm the selected entries are gone.
- Check the separate app or service that may have created a copy.
- Review smart-home device history if connected devices were involved.
- Check Recently Deleted in Voice Memos and use Delete Forever when appropriate.
- Remember that provider controls describe their own systems; they do not establish permanent removal from every backup, legal record, operational database, or third-party service.
- Leave the microphone muted or future-saving setting disabled only if that matches your privacy goal; those settings reduce future collection or activation but do not substitute for historical deletion.
The reliable sequence is account identification, provider-side history deletion, separate-app cleanup, and a verification pass. No single toggle reaches every place a voice request might have been processed or stored.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off voice history delete old recordings?
No. Google explicitly says that turning off Include voice and audio activity does not delete previously saved audio. Delete existing items in Google Account activity first. On HomePod, turn off Improve Siri & Dictation separately from Delete Siri History. Alexa’s history deletion is also separate from any future-data setting.
How do I delete voice recordings from Alexa?
In the Alexa app, open More > Alexa Privacy > Review Alexa History, select the relevant Amazon account entries, and delete the recordings, transcripts, and typed requests. Check Smart Home Device History separately if you also want connected-device status and usage information addressed.
How do I delete Google Assistant history?
Sign in to the correct Google Account and open Data & privacy > Web & App Activity > Manage activity. Find entries marked with the audio icon and delete individual items or choose the all-time option. Google also documents voice commands for deleting today’s activity, the last conversation, or the last accidental request.

In the Home app on an iPhone or iPad, select the HomePod, open its settings, choose Siri History, and tap Delete Siri History. The cited Apple instructions apply to HomePod software version 27 or later, so labels can differ on earlier versions.
Are smart-speaker recordings stored in iCloud?
Not as one universal category. HomePod Siri History and Google or Alexa account activity use their providers’ controls. Apple Voice Memos recordings can use iCloud and must be deleted in Voice Memos, followed by Recently Deleted > Delete Forever. A third-party recording app has its own account and deletion process.
Will deleting a phone backup erase assistant recordings?
Do not assume so. A phone backup is not a universal deletion command for Google Account activity, Alexa history, HomePod Siri History, or third-party copies. Delete each record through the service that created or stored it.
Why does a related Alexa record remain after I delete the voice clip?
Amazon says other interaction records may remain, including information supplied through a request, actions Alexa took, searches, attachments, reminders, orders, preferences, lists, tasks, and messages. Review the relevant Alexa feature separately if you need those records removed.
What if the deleted Google item still appears on another speaker?
Google says deleting all activity can take up to a day to propagate to other devices. Verify the account, wait for propagation, then refresh My Activity and the device app. If it remains, check whether the visible item belongs to another Google service or a third-party action.
The Bottom Line
Delete historical records where they were stored: Google Account activity, Alexa Privacy, or the HomePod’s Siri History. Then disable future saving or improvement sharing if desired, and separately clear Voice Memos, third-party actions, smart-home history, and other services. These controls are targeted, not a guarantee that every derivative record or backup everywhere has disappeared.
