First identify the exact command, the object you right-clicked, and the app that added it. Disable the integration in that app if it offers a setting. On Windows Insider builds that include Microsoft’s new context-menu controls, use Customize menu. Only after those checks should you consider an item-specific registry change—and only with a verified path, backup, and a way to undo it.
If you are asking, “Can I remove right-click options in Settings?” the answer depends on your Windows build and release channel. The new controls are not present on every Windows 11 installation, so do not assume that a missing page indicates a fault.
What “remove” means in Windows 11
Windows 11 has two related context menus. The compact menu appears first; Show more options, Shift+F10, or the keyboard menu key opens the older, expanded menu. Moving a command between these menus is a display change, not deletion. An entry that is absent from the compact menu may still be present in the legacy menu.

- Hide it from the modern menu: the command may remain under Show more options.
- Disable it wherever its source applies: remove or turn off the app integration or file-type registration that supplies the command.
- Open the legacy menu more easily: use Show more options, Shift+F10, or the menu key. This does not remove anything.
The correct method depends on whether the command is built into Windows, supplied by an installed app, or registered for a particular file type or Shell object. Microsoft describes these mechanisms in its Shell extension handler documentation.

Before changing anything, decide whether the problem is clutter, an accidental command, or a privacy or security concern. If the command is merely inconvenient, leaving it in the legacy menu is often the least disruptive solution. If it launches an app you no longer use, removing the app through its normal uninstaller may be more appropriate than changing a registry entry.
Identify the command and its owner before changing anything
Write down the command exactly as it appears. Also record what you right-clicked:
- A particular file, such as a document or image
- Any file, regardless of type
- A folder or drive
- The blank background inside a File Explorer folder
Context is significant. Windows registers Shell extensions against different scopes, so a command that appears for files may not be registered for folders or a folder background. The same wording can therefore come from different registrations.

Look for the app’s name in the command, submenu, icon, or nearby grouping. Note whether the command appears in the compact menu, the legacy menu, or both. Also note whether it appears only for one extension, such as a particular image or archive format. These observations narrow the possible owner before you touch system settings.
If the entry is not obvious, temporarily close or uninstall only the suspected app (after saving your work) and check whether the command disappears. Reinstalling or disabling an app is preferable to deleting an unidentified registry key. Do not remove a work or security application merely to test a theory unless you have a recovery plan and authorization to do so.
Several apps can use similar labels, such as Open with, Share, Scan, or Compress. A familiar-looking label is not proof of ownership. Compare the command’s icon, submenu location, and the file types affected, then consult the app’s support material if necessary.
Try the app’s own integration setting first
Open the application that appears to own the command and inspect its preferences, advanced options, Explorer or File Explorer integration section, and any installer or Modify dialog. Some applications provide a checkbox for adding or removing context-menu commands; others do not. Microsoft confirms that apps can add context-menu extensions, but it does not promise that every extension has a user-facing switch.

- Search its settings for terms such as context menu, Shell integration, Explorer integration, right-click, or Windows Explorer.
- Turn off only the command you identified, if the app provides separate controls.
- If no setting exists, check the app’s official support or installer documentation for an Explorer-integration option.
- Reopen the same File Explorer location and test the same object type.
Do not assume that disabling an app’s startup task, overlay icon, or background service will remove its menu command. Those features can use separate registrations. Likewise, turning off an app’s cloud synchronization may leave its context-menu extension active.
If the app offers a choice between a modern-menu extension and a legacy extension, change only the one you want to remove and record the original setting. A vendor-supported toggle is normally easier to reverse than a registry edit and is less likely to affect other file associations.

Check whether your Windows build has the new Customize menu controls
Microsoft announced a redesigned context menu on 17 August 2026. The announcement described Settings controls for built-in commands, app extensions, command placement, and common commands such as Properties. The initial rollout was to Windows Insiders, not every stable Windows 11 installation. Before following these steps, check Settings > System > About for your Windows version and OS build, and check Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program for the channel, if that page is available.
On a build that exposes the feature:
- Open a right-click menu in File Explorer.
- Select Customize menu (the label may be absent on other builds).
- Use the Settings destination shown there to manage built-in commands and app extensions.
- Choose whether an app extension appears in the main menu or a submenu, or turn off the specific command where the interface provides that control.
- Apply the change and test the original file, folder, drive, or folder-background context.
The page is intended to control supported entries, not to provide a universal switch for every Shell registration. A command supplied by an older legacy handler may not be listed. In that situation, continue with the owning app’s controls and do not infer that the missing entry can be safely deleted from an arbitrary registry location.
Do not treat the absence of Customize menu as an error. It can simply mean that your edition, build, or release channel does not include the feature yet. Microsoft’s August announcement associated its first Experimental rollout with Windows 11 version 26H2, build 26340.9212. A 11 September 2026 Experimental-channel note listed build 26340.9482 and said users could turn off the Customize context menu entry itself. These are Insider rollout details, not a promise that the controls exist on current stable builds.
Microsoft described the goal as: “Today, we’re excited to announce an updated context menu that delivers a faster, simpler, and more customizable experience.” The controls and labels may continue to change as the Insider rollout progresses. If the new page itself is what you dislike, the September Experimental-channel note says users can turn off the Customize context menu entry. That setting concerns the customization command, not every third-party command in the menu. It should not be confused with removing an app extension.
Understand modern and legacy app extensions
Windows 11 groups app extensions below Shell verbs in the modern menu. Older IContextMenu extensions generally appear in the legacy menu opened by Show more options. For an extension to appear in the new menu, Microsoft’s developer guidance says it must use IExplorerCommand and the app must be packaged with package identity.
This explains why an app command can appear only after you select Show more options, or why a command may be visible in both menus. It also explains why changing the compact-menu display does not necessarily disable the underlying extension. In practical terms, the menu location is a diagnostic clue. A legacy-only entry may belong to an older handler that the new customization page cannot enumerate. A modern-menu entry may be an app extension that Windows can place in the main menu or a submenu. An entry in both menus may involve more than one registration or a Windows display of the same app capability in two interfaces.
Registry editing is an advanced, item-specific option
There is no single universal registry location that safely removes every right-click entry. Microsoft documents registered file-type verbs and Shell extension handlers, but those are developer mechanisms with different scopes. A guessed deletion can remove commands for more files than intended, break an app’s integration, or affect File Explorer.

Use the registry only when all of these conditions are true:

- You have identified the owning app or a documented registration for that command.
- The app vendor or Microsoft documentation specifies the relevant key or value for your Windows version.
- You can restore the change.
Prepare a reversible change
- Create a Windows restore point from Control Panel > System > System protection > Create, if System Protection is enabled.
- Open Registry Editor only after you have the documented path. Export the affected key with File > Export and save the
.regfile somewhere you can find. - Record the command wording, the object type, the app version, the Windows build, and the original value data.
- Change only the documented value or key. Do not delete an unknown CLSID, an entire Shell branch, or a broad file-type association as a shortcut.
- Close Registry Editor and test the same context. If the result is wrong, restore the exported key or use the restore point.
Microsoft’s Extending Shortcut Menus documentation distinguishes registered verbs from more sophisticated shortcut-menu handlers. Its examples explain how registrations work; they are not a blanket consumer cleanup recipe. A specific procedure for a named app should come from that app’s current documentation and match your Windows version.
A registry export is not a substitute for knowing what the key does. Save it with a descriptive filename that includes the app and date, and keep it in a location you can access if File Explorer behaves unexpectedly. If a vendor supplies an uninstall utility or repair option, prefer that supported route over manually removing a handler.
No paid cleanup utility, registry optimizer, backup device, or special hardware is required by the documented Windows process. Third-party cleaners may use broad rules that remove registrations unrelated to the one command you want to change, so they add risk rather than solving the identification problem.
Why the context determines which entry you see
Shell registrations can be associated with a file-type ProgID or with predefined Shell objects. Microsoft lists scopes such as these:

These scopes are described in Microsoft’s Creating Shell Extension Handlers documentation. They are why copying a registry fix intended for one file type can fail to remove a command from folders—or can remove it from more places than intended.
For a reliable test, use one known object in each relevant category: a file with the affected extension, a different file type, a folder, and blank folder space. If the command appears only in one category, that observation is more useful than searching the entire registry for its display text.
Choose the least risky route

If your goal is simply to avoid a crowded compact menu, use the Windows control when it exists or leave the command in the legacy menu. If the command is unwanted in every context, disable the owning app integration or follow a verified, item-specific procedure.
Availability and scope should be considered together. An app toggle may affect every user or every file type handled by that app, while a file-type registration may affect only one association. The Windows page may change placement without disabling the underlying capability. Choose the narrowest supported change that meets your goal.

Refresh File Explorer and verify the result
After changing an app setting or a documented registration, close and reopen the affected File Explorer window. Then test the same object type that originally showed the command. Check both the compact menu and Show more options; a command can be hidden in one while remaining in the other.
Do not assume that a full reboot is always required. The documented mechanisms do not establish one universal refresh rule. If the entry remains, check these possibilities:
- You changed a file-type registration, but tested a folder or folder background.
- The app has more than one integration or registered handler.
- The command belongs to a different app with similar wording.
- The compact menu changed, but the legacy menu still contains the older extension.
- Your Windows build does not include the Settings control you expected.
Return to the exact wording and context you recorded, then consult the owning app’s documentation rather than broad registry-cleanup instructions. If the change affects other commands, restore the exported key or reverse the app setting before continuing diagnosis.

An app command appears only under Show more options
This is usually consistent with an older legacy extension. Check the app’s integration setting first. If you only want a cleaner modern menu, leave the legacy command in place; hiding the compact view does not uninstall the extension.

An item appears for one file type
It may be a registered verb for that file type’s ProgID. Identify the exact extension and the associated app before seeking a documented change. Do not apply an “all files” registration fix to a single file type.
An item appears when you right-click a folder or blank folder space
Record whether you selected the folder or clicked the background. Folder, Directory, and DirectoryBackground registrations have different targets, so the distinction determines which documentation applies.
The Customize menu option is missing
Verify the Windows build and Insider channel. Microsoft’s announced controls were rolling out through Insider channels, with follow-up changes in the Experimental channel. A stable Windows 11 PC may not have that page; use the app’s supported setting or an item-specific documented procedure instead.
The command vanished from one menu but not the other
That is often expected. Test both the compact menu and the legacy menu. A placement or visibility change does not necessarily disable the extension, and an older handler may remain available through Show more options.

You cannot identify the app
Record the exact wording, icon, object type, and menu location. Check recently installed or updated applications and their Explorer-integration settings. Do not delete a registry entry solely because its display text resembles the command; registrations can use internal names that do not match what users see.

Bottom line: identify first, then remove at the source
The reliable sequence is to capture the command and context, identify the app or registration that supplies it, use the app’s own control, and then check Customize menu only if your Windows build provides it. Treat the registry as a last-resort, documented change scoped to the exact item. Never delete an unknown CLSID or broad Shell key merely because its name looks related.
