Start with the least destructive supported fix: delete the unofficial app in Settings > Storage. If its icon remains or the console behaves incorrectly, use Safe Mode to run Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database. Restore Default Settings resets configuration without deleting stored games, apps, captures, clips, or saves. For the most complete supported return to Sony software, back up anything you need and use Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) with Sony’s official reinstallation file. That final procedure erases all user data.
This sequence is designed for software changes such as homebrew or other unofficial applications. It does not authorize unofficial firmware, exploit files, or third-party recovery tools. Sony warns that altered consoles and non-official update methods can fail to operate or install updates and can affect warranty and repair service.
Choose the reset level before touching the console
“Back to stock” can mean two different things. If you only want one unofficial application gone, deleting that application is enough. If the app’s icon is stuck, the content index needs repair rather than a factory reset. If settings are corrupted, restore defaults while preserving your content. Only the final reinstall option replaces the system software and deletes the console’s user data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not begin with a factory reset simply because an app was unofficial. A reset can remove saves, captures, clips, installed games, and other local data that a targeted deletion would leave intact. Decide whether the priority is preserving data, correcting a display problem, or wiping the console completely.

Recovery options compared
| Action | Data preservation | Replaces system software? | Best use | Equipment and risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delete app in Settings > Storage | Removes the selected app; other data remains. | No. | Removing one unofficial app as the first step. | No special equipment. Lowest data-loss risk. |
| Rebuild Database | Does not intentionally erase user data. | No. | A deleted app icon remains or system content features behave incorrectly. | DualSense controller connected by USB in Safe Mode. Low risk, but use the documented Safe Mode path. |
| Restore Default Settings | Sony says stored games, apps, captures, clips, and saves remain. | No. | Cleaning up corrupted or unwanted configuration. | No special media. It will not remove an installed app or replace system software. |
| Reset PS5 | Deletes user data. | Resets the console; this is a factory reset, not the full reinstall procedure. | A complete wipe when you do not need local content. | Back up first. Data-loss risk is high because the operation is destructive. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Deletes all user data. | Yes; system software is removed and reinstalled. | The strongest supported software reset and the closest software route back to a stock console. | PC or Mac, FAT32 or exFAT USB drive, official Sony file, and Safe Mode. Sony warns against unofficial files or methods. |
Step 1: delete the unofficial app normally
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Open Storage.
- Locate and select the unofficial application.
- Choose the delete option and confirm.
- Restart the console normally, then check the home screen and Storage list.
Sony’s application troubleshooting guidance uses deletion followed by reinstall for problematic applications. For an unofficial app, do not reinstall it; the objective is to remove it and return to supported software. If the application disappears and the console works normally, stop here. There is no benefit in running a more destructive reset.
If the app is not listed in Storage, or deletion completes but the icon remains, do not repeatedly delete it or download replacement files from an unofficial source. Move to the content-index repair step.
Step 2: repair a leftover icon with Rebuild Database
A stale icon is usually a content-index problem, not proof that the application is still executable. Sony identifies database rebuilding as useful when a game icon remains after deletion. The operation rebuilds the console’s content index; it is not the same as a factory reset.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Turn the PS5 completely off. Do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the console’s power button. Release it after the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the DualSense controller to the console with a USB data cable and press the controller’s PS button.
- Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Choose Rebuild Database, not a reset option, and allow the process to finish without switching off the console.
- Restart normally and check the home screen and Storage.
Rebuild Database does not intentionally erase user data. It can clear a leftover icon and repair indexing-related behavior, but it does not remove or reinstall the operating system. If the unofficial software continues to run, or if the console reports a system-software problem, continue to the appropriate reset rather than assuming the index repair changed the firmware.
Step 3: use Restore Default Settings for configuration cleanup
Use this option when the problem is unwanted or corrupted settings rather than the presence of an application. Sony says it leaves stored games, applications, screenshots, video clips, and saved data intact. Because it preserves content and does not replace system software, it is not a method for removing a persistent unofficial application by itself.

- Open Settings.
- Go to System > System Software > Reset Options.
- Select Restore Default Settings.
- Read the confirmation screen and accept it only if you want the configuration reset.
- After the restart, review the console’s settings and confirm whether the app and its icon are still present.
Choose this step only after ordinary deletion and, when necessary, database rebuilding. If you need a genuinely clean software installation, this setting reset is insufficient; use the reinstall procedure below and accept its complete data wipe.
Step 4: prepare for a complete official reinstall
Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) is the most thorough supported software reset. Sony states: “Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.” Treat that as a complete wipe, not as a larger version of Restore Default Settings.

Back up before erasing
Back up every save, capture, clip, and other local item you may need before starting. Confirm that the backup is usable and that you know the sign-in details required during setup. If a required item exists only on the console and is not backed up, the reinstall will remove it.
Get the correct USB drive
Sony’s current support instructions require a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The drive needs approximately 1.2 GB of free space for the official reinstallation file. A USB data cable for the DualSense is also required when navigating Safe Mode. Use a cable that carries data, not a charge-only cable.
Create the exact folder structure
- On a PC or Mac, format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting erases the USB drive, so copy off anything you need first.
- Create a folder in the root of the drive named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create a folder namedUPDATE. - Download Sony’s official PS5 system-software reinstallation file from its support instructions.
- Save the file inside the
UPDATEfolder and name it exactlyPS5UPDATE.PUP.
The resulting path must be PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. Keep the spelling, capitalization, and folder nesting exact. Do not rename the file with an additional extension such as .PUP.pup, place it in a different directory, or substitute an update file from another source.

Run Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)
- With the PS5 powered off, insert the prepared USB drive into the console.
- Press and hold the power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the DualSense with the USB data cable and press the PS button.
- Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
- Follow the on-screen confirmation prompts. Verify that you selected the reinstall option, because the operation deletes all user data.
- Leave the console connected to power and do not remove the USB drive while the process is running.
- When the reinstall completes, follow the first-run setup, install only software obtained through supported channels, and check the console’s system and storage screens.
This procedure removes the existing user environment and installs the official system-software package supplied by Sony. It is the appropriate supported route when the goal is a clean software state, but it cannot repair every possible hardware alteration or physical fault. If the console cannot complete the process, stop using unofficial files and use the official diagnostic route described below.
What “stock” means after the reset
A stock software state means the console is running Sony’s system software without the unofficial application or user-installed modification that prompted the cleanup. After setup, inspect Settings > Storage for the removed application and review the home screen for stale entries. Check that ordinary system functions operate normally before restoring personal data.
A reinstall does not prove that every past change to hardware has been reversed. If the console was physically modified, has damaged storage, or cannot enter or remain in Safe Mode, software steps alone may not return it to factory condition. Do not attempt to compensate with firmware from an unverified website.

Sony warns that using update data from another source, or using a method other than its documented method, can prevent the console from operating correctly or installing updates. Sony also warns that altered consoles or non-official methods may affect warranty coverage and repair services.
- Use only the official Sony reinstallation file for the reinstall procedure.
- Do not combine files from different system-software packages.
- Do not follow a third-party “unbrick” package that changes the documented folder, filename, or Safe Mode process.
- Do not keep retrying a failed install with unknown files; remove those files and return to the official workflow.
- Record the exact Safe Mode message or error code before contacting support.
The safest choice is conservative: delete the app first, rebuild the database only when indexing is the problem, restore defaults only for settings cleanup, and reserve the full reinstall for a deliberate wipe.

Troubleshooting branches
The app icon remains after deletion
Run Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database in Safe Mode. This targets the content index without intentionally erasing user data. If the icon remains after the rebuild, proceed to official support rather than installing another package to overwrite it.
The controller does not work in Safe Mode
Connect the DualSense directly with a USB data cable and press the PS button. A charge-only cable can prevent the controller from communicating with Safe Mode. If a known data cable still fails, try another USB port and then contact support if the console cannot accept input.
The reinstall file is not recognized
- Confirm that the USB drive is FAT32 or exFAT.
- Confirm the root-level folders are exactly
PS5andUPDATE. - Confirm the complete filename is
PS5UPDATE.PUP. - Confirm the file is inside
PS5/UPDATE, not in the drive root or an extra nested folder. - Download the file again from Sony’s official instructions if the original download may be incomplete.
Do not solve a recognition failure by changing the filename to a guessed alternative or downloading a modified package.
The console will not boot normally
Try Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep. If Safe Mode opens, use only the documented recovery choices and the official reinstallation file. If the console cannot enter Safe Mode, repeatedly shuts down, or remains unusable after an official attempt, stop and use the PlayStation Repairs diagnostic tool.
The console remains stuck in Safe Mode
Note which menu item fails, whether the controller connects, and any displayed error. Do not select destructive options casually. If ordinary restart, database rebuilding, and the official reinstall do not resolve the problem, escalate through PlayStation Repairs rather than third-party firmware services.
You already used an unofficial update file
Stop using that file and remove it from the USB drive. Obtain the official Sony reinstallation file, recreate the FAT32 or exFAT media with the exact PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP layout, and attempt the documented Safe Mode reinstall only after backing up what remains possible. Sony’s warning specifically covers update data from another source and non-documented methods.
Quick Recap
When to choose each option
- Choose deletion when one app is the only issue and the console otherwise works.
- Choose Rebuild Database when deletion succeeded but a home-screen icon or content listing is stale.
- Choose Restore Default Settings when you need configuration cleanup and must preserve local content.
- Choose Reset PS5 when you intentionally want a complete factory wipe but are not using the reinstall-media workflow.
- Choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) when you need the most complete supported software reset and accept that all user data will be deleted.
- Choose PlayStation Repairs when official recovery fails, the console will not update or boot, or it remains stuck in Safe Mode.
Final safety checklist
- Delete the unofficial app from Settings > Storage before considering a reset.
- Use Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database for a persistent icon.
- Remember that Restore Default Settings preserves stored content, while both reset options erase user data.
- For a reinstall, back up first and prepare a FAT32 or exFAT USB drive with approximately 1.2 GB free.
- Use the exact
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUPlayout and Sony’s official file. - Expect unofficial files or altered consoles to carry operational, warranty, and repair-service consequences.
- Use PlayStation Repairs if the official procedure cannot restore a usable console.
