Treat an unfamiliar remote-access app as a possible security incident, not just an unwanted program. If someone may still be connected, disconnect Wi‑Fi or Ethernet, avoid signing in to sensitive services on that computer, and preserve evidence such as screenshots, filenames, timestamps and account names. Then remove the software, disable built-in remote access, clear startup persistence, scan from trusted tools, patch the operating system and change important passwords from a known-clean device. In a work environment—or whenever administrator credentials, business data or recurring access are involved—contact IT or an incident-response professional before continuing normal use.
What unauthorized remote access can mean
Remote-control software is not automatically malicious. Support technicians, employers and family members may install it intentionally. The warning signs are an app you did not approve, an unexpected support code or user, a new service or login item, unexplained cursor movement, or a message that another person is viewing your screen. A legitimate tool can also be abused after a scam call, stolen password or poor configuration.
Removing the visible application may not end access. A remote-control program can leave a Windows service, scheduled task, startup entry, browser extension, local administrator, firewall rule or macOS login item behind. Built-in features such as Windows Remote Desktop, macOS Screen Sharing and Apple Remote Management can provide access even when a third-party app is gone.
Recommended Free Tools
- Personal computer: contain the device, document what you find, clean it, and recover accounts from another device.
- Managed or business computer: preserve logs and contact IT before deleting evidence. Centralized logging, allowlisting, MFA and network controls may be required.
- Active or repeated access: treat it as an incident. Do not keep using the computer for banking, email administration or sensitive work while investigating.
Do this first if a session may still be active
- Disconnect the network. Turn off Wi‑Fi and unplug Ethernet. If the computer is business-owned, follow your incident-response procedure instead of improvising; responders may need the connection briefly to capture logs.
- Do not confront the operator through the compromised computer. Avoid opening mail, banking, password-manager or cloud-administration accounts on it.
- Record evidence. Photograph or screenshot the app window, support ID, user name, prompts, alerts and “screen being observed” notices. Note the date and time, executable or application path, publisher, install date and any phone number or message that led to the installation.
- Use a clean device for recovery. A phone or computer you trust should be used later to change passwords, revoke sessions and contact your employer, bank or service provider.
- Do not delete evidence prematurely. If the device contains business information, regulated data or signs of extortion, ask IT or an incident-response specialist how to preserve it before uninstalling anything.
An unfamiliar process name alone does not prove malware. Verify its publisher, path, install source and whether your organization uses it. The combination of unexpected installation, unexplained access and persistence is more significant than a name that merely looks unfamiliar.

Remove unauthorized remote-access software from Windows
1. Identify the program and its persistence
After containing the computer, sign in only as needed to investigate. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows versions) and look for the displayed product name, publisher and install date. Also check Task Manager (right-click the task and choose Open file location) to record the executable path and whether it is running as a service.
Write down associated support codes, user names, service names and paths before removal. Check Task Manager > Startup apps, the Startup folders (shell:startup and shell:common startup), Task Scheduler for recently created tasks, and Services for entries matching the application. In a managed environment, export or photograph relevant event-log entries rather than deleting them.
2. Uninstall the visible application
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps > Apps & features on older Windows).
- Find the remote-access product, select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall. Follow its own uninstaller if it opens one.
- Restart when prompted. If Windows reports that the program is in use, end its task only after recording the process and path; do not force-delete random files.
Microsoft documents the standard removal path as “Settings > Apps > Apps & features” (called Add or Remove Programs in older releases): Microsoft’s unwanted-software guidance.
On Windows 11 version 23H2 or later, Microsoft also documents removing the built-in Remote Desktop Connection app. In Installed apps select it and choose Uninstall, or open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

mstsc.exe /uninstall
Restart afterward. This removes the client application; it does not by itself disable incoming Remote Desktop access or remove a different remote-control product. See the Microsoft Learn Remote Desktop uninstall instructions for the documented Windows 11 procedure (updated 2025).
3. Turn off Windows remote access you do not need
Open Settings > System > Remote Desktop. If you never use incoming Remote Desktop, switch it off. If it is required, confirm that the listed users are expected and that the PC name and account list have not changed.
On editions that expose the classic controls, open System Properties > Remote and review the Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance settings. Then inspect:

- Task Scheduler: disable or delete tasks created by the tool after documenting their triggers and actions.
- Windows Firewall with Advanced Security: review inbound rules for Remote Desktop and the product name. Remove unauthorized rules; do not broadly disable the firewall.
- Startup and browser extensions: remove entries you can attribute to the unwanted software, then restart and check again.
For organizations, CISA’s StopRansomware Guide recommends auditing Remote Desktop Protocol use, closing unused RDP ports, restricting access to known accounts, logging attempts and requiring MFA for privileged RDP access. CISA also warns that portable or obfuscated remote-access tools can evade ordinary antivirus. Its guidance says application controls should prevent installation and execution of portable versions of unauthorized remote-access and other software: CISA cybersecurity advisory AA23-187A.

4. Scan in layers
- Reconnect only when you are ready to update security tools, or download updates on a clean device if possible.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and select Check for updates to obtain current security intelligence.
- Run Scan options > Full scan. Let it finish; a quick scan is not a substitute when persistence is suspected.
- If unwanted software remains or returns, choose Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan). Windows restarts into a trusted scanning environment and then reports results after booting back into Windows.
- For a second Microsoft option, use the current Microsoft Safety Scanner downloaded directly from Microsoft. The Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) can remove specific prevalent malware; Microsoft says Defender Offline or Safety Scanner should be considered for more comprehensive detection and removal.
Quarantine findings rather than restoring them. If a scanner names a file that belongs to a business application, pause and verify with IT before deleting it.
5. Recheck persistence and recover accounts
After the scan and a restart, repeat the checks for startup apps, services, scheduled tasks, browser extensions, local administrators and Remote Desktop settings. A clean scan does not prove that a legitimate tool was correctly configured or that an exposed password is safe.
From a known-clean device, change the Windows login password and important online passwords, starting with email, password-manager, financial, cloud-storage and administrator accounts. Use unique passwords, enable MFA, and use each provider’s “sign out of all sessions” or session-revocation control. Review recent sign-ins and recovery methods for changes you did not make.
Remove unauthorized remote-access software from macOS
1. Contain and document the Mac
Turn off Wi‑Fi or unplug Ethernet if another person may still be viewing or controlling the Mac. Record the app name and developer, installation prompts, login items, user or support codes, and any “Your screen is being observed” message. If the Mac belongs to an employer or school, contact its administrator before deleting profiles or logs.

2. Remove the application safely
- Open Finder > Applications and locate the unwanted app.
- Use the vendor’s uninstaller when one is provided; it may remove a helper, launch agent or system extension that dragging the app to Trash would leave behind.
- If no uninstaller exists, move the application to Trash, but empty Trash only after documenting the name, developer and location. Restart and check for a remaining helper or login item.
Do not bypass macOS security prompts to run an unverified replacement or “cleaner.” Apple says overriding security settings to open an unchecked app is the most common way a Mac gets infected with malware. Read Apple’s current guidance on opening apps safely on Mac when Gatekeeper blocks an app.
3. Remove login items, extensions and background activity
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions.
- Under Open at Login, select an unknown item and click the minus (–) button.
- Review third-party extensions and the list of apps allowed to run in the background. Turn off or remove entries you can identify as unauthorized.
- Restart the Mac and return to this pane. A reappearing item indicates persistence that may require the vendor’s uninstaller or professional help.
Apple’s setting paths vary by macOS release; its Login Items & Extensions guide covers the current interface.
4. Turn off Screen Sharing and Remote Management
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Sharing.
- Turn off Screen Sharing and Remote Management unless you explicitly need them.
- For each service, remove unfamiliar allowed users and review the permissions granted to administrators or support staff.
Screen Sharing allows another computer to view and control the Mac. Apple states that when Screen Sharing is turned off, other computers on your network cannot connect to the Mac: Apple’s Screen Sharing guide.

5. Disable Apple Remote Desktop management when appropriate
If Apple Remote Desktop management is enabled without authorization, an administrator can deactivate it with Apple’s documented command:

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/kickstart -deactivate
Run this only when you understand the administrative impact and have confirmed that no legitimate organization depends on the service. Apple documents the command and related cautions in its Remote Desktop administrator guide.
6. Investigate “Your screen is being observed”
That warning does not identify one specific culprit. Apple lists Screen Sharing, Apple Remote Desktop, VNC software, video-conference screen sharing and screen-recording tools as possible causes. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording and review which apps have permission; also recheck General > Sharing. Remove access for apps you do not recognize, update macOS, restart, and test again.
If the message persists, start the Mac in safe mode to determine whether third-party software loads at startup. Apple’s troubleshooting list is in Apple Support article 120315. An unknown management profile, administrator account or recurring process is a reason to stop sensitive work and obtain incident-response help rather than repeatedly dismissing the alert.
7. Recover the Mac and online accounts
From a clean device, change the Mac login password and important online passwords, revoke active sessions, and enable MFA. Inspect recent account activity and recovery addresses. If an attacker knew an administrator password, assume other credentials typed on the Mac may be exposed and prioritize them accordingly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Manual cleanup or professional incident response?
Use the following decision points before choosing how far to escalate. A personal computer with an intentionally installed but misconfigured tool is different from a machine controlled by a scammer or a compromised business endpoint.
Quick Recap
| Situation | Appropriate next step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Personal device; one unfamiliar app; no evidence of active access; no administrator or sensitive-data exposure | Document, uninstall, disable remote settings, scan, patch and recover accounts | Manual cleanup can be sufficient when the tool and persistence are fully identified and do not return. |
| Tool was intentionally installed but misconfigured | Reconfigure or remove it with the owner’s approval; review accounts, permissions and firewall rules | The software may be legitimate, so indiscriminate deletion can break support or management. |
| Scammer had control, or access is still active or recurring | Disconnect the device and obtain IT or incident-response assistance | Persistence, stolen sessions and tampered logs may not be visible in the app list. |
| Administrator credentials, business data or regulated information may have been exposed | Follow the organization’s incident plan; preserve evidence and involve security staff | Centralized logs, containment, notification decisions and credential rotation may be required. |
| Managed environment needs allowlisting, MFA, network restrictions or audit trails | Have IT implement policy and monitoring rather than relying on a one-time uninstall | CISA recommends auditing, allowlisting, logging and network controls because portable tools can evade ordinary antivirus. |
Common failure modes and how to avoid them
- Only deleting the desktop icon: the service, scheduled task or login item may still launch. Check every persistence location listed above.
- Running cleanup while connected: an operator can watch the investigation or reinstall the tool. Contain first.
- Changing passwords on the suspect computer: a keylogger or remote viewer could capture the new credentials. Use a clean device.
- Disabling the firewall or security software globally: this removes protection and may help the attacker. Remove only verified rules and keep security controls active.
- Trusting a “support” caller’s uninstall instructions: unsolicited callers may be the same people who installed the software. Contact the vendor or employer through a number you already trust.
- Overriding macOS Gatekeeper: this can replace one unwanted program with another. Use a verified vendor uninstaller or Apple’s documented tools.
- Deleting evidence on a work computer: premature cleanup can destroy the logs needed to determine scope. Ask IT what to preserve.
- Assuming a clean antivirus result proves safety: legitimate remote tools, stolen credentials and cloud sessions may not be detected as malware. Review accounts and remote settings separately.
Final verification checklist
- The computer is no longer connected while you investigate an active or unexplained session.
- You recorded the app, publisher or developer, path, install date, support code, account and relevant timestamps.
- The unwanted application and its service, scheduled task, startup entry, extension or login item are gone.
- Windows Remote Desktop, macOS Screen Sharing and Remote Management are off unless explicitly required.
- Unknown local administrators, Remote Desktop users, macOS administrators and management profiles have been addressed.
- Windows security intelligence is current, a full scan has completed, and Defender Offline or another Microsoft follow-up scan was used if the software persisted.
- macOS Screen Recording and Sharing permissions contain only trusted apps.
- The operating system and browsers are patched and the device has been restarted and rechecked.
- Passwords and active sessions were changed or revoked from a clean device, with MFA enabled.
- IT or incident response has been engaged when access continued, administrator credentials or sensitive data were involved, or persistence returned.
