Use the PS5’s supported menus, not a jailbreak or “cleaner.” If the item is installed locally, remove it at Settings > Storage > Games and Apps. If it is an account authorization, remove it at Settings > Users and Accounts > Authorized Apps. Then update the console, rebuild its database only when deletion or game errors persist, and secure your account if anything unfamiliar appears.
A full reset is a last resort because Reset Your Console erases data on the console’s storage. Back up what you can before using it.
First identify what you are removing
“Unauthorized game-store software” can describe several different things on a PS5. The correct fix depends on whether files are installed on the console, a title is merely listed in your Game Library, or a third-party service has permission to your PlayStation account. Treating all three as the same problem can leave the software in place or cause unnecessary data loss.
| What you see | Where to check | Correct action |
|---|---|---|
| An unfamiliar game or app occupies console storage | Settings > Storage > Games and Apps | Select the item and choose the delete command. |
| A title is visible in Game Library but is not installed | Check Games and Apps storage first | Do not launch it. If it is not stored locally, investigate the account or license instead of trying to delete nonexistent files. |
| An unfamiliar service appears among account permissions | Settings > Users and Accounts > Authorized Apps | Select the service and choose Unlink > Yes, Unlink. |
| Unknown purchases, changed account details, or repeated suspicious activity | Account Management and PlayStation Support | Secure the account and follow Sony’s compromised-account recovery process. |
A library listing by itself does not prove that an application is installed. Storage is the authoritative place to determine whether there is a local package to remove.

Pause suspicious activity before changing anything
Do not open an unknown store, type your PlayStation password into its prompt, or run an unofficial “unlock,” jailbreak, piracy, or cleaning utility. Such tools can alter system software, expose credentials, or make later diagnosis harder. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Software Usage Terms state:
“You must not use any means to bypass or disable any encryption, security, or authentication mechanism for the Authorised Systems or any Software.”
- Disconnect from any suspicious service without entering additional credentials.
- Use the PS5’s own Settings, Storage, Safe Mode, and account controls for the removal.
- If you already entered a password into an unfamiliar prompt, treat the account as potentially compromised and change the password or switch to a passkey before doing anything else.
- Keep the console powered normally while you identify the item; do not interrupt an official update or database rebuild.
Delete an installed game or app through Storage
This is the supported procedure for a local game or application. It does not use Safe Mode and it is not the same command as resetting the console.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Storage.
- Open Games and Apps.
- Find the unfamiliar game or app in the list. Check the title carefully so you do not remove a legitimate installation by mistake.
- Select the item and choose Delete, then confirm.
After deletion, return to the home screen and verify that the item is no longer installed. If its icon still appears in Game Library, that is a separate library or ownership entry; do not assume the deletion failed. Use the storage list to confirm whether local files remain.
If the title is on an external USB drive, select the relevant storage location before opening its games-and-apps list. The same principle applies: remove the local item through the supported storage menu rather than a third-party utility.
Update the PS5 and the individual title
An unfamiliar or damaged installation can behave differently after a system or title update. Update through Sony’s software controls before attempting more invasive recovery.
Install the latest system software
- Open Settings.
- Choose System.
- Open System Software.
- Select System Software Update and follow the on-screen instructions.
Allow the update to finish without powering off the console. If the update reports an error, record the message and move to the Safe Mode or USB-recovery procedure rather than using an unofficial updater.
Check one game or app for an update
- Highlight the individual title on the home screen or in Game Library.
- Press the controller’s Options button.
- Select Check for Update.
Updating a legitimate title can repair a version mismatch, but it does not authorize an unknown store or make an account-safe service legitimate. Remove software you do not recognize and update the system separately.
Rebuild the database when deletion or game errors persist
Use database rebuilding after the normal Storage deletion, particularly when the PS5 reports an error, an item remains stuck, or games show filesystem-related problems. Rebuilding is a supported filesystem and database repair step; it is not a jailbreak-removal tool and it does not replace account security work.

- Turn the PS5 completely off. Do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the power button. Release it after you hear the second beep; this starts Safe Mode.
- Connect the DualSense controller with a USB cable if Safe Mode asks for a wired connection, then press the PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Choose Rebuild Database and wait for the process to complete.
Do not interrupt the rebuild. When the console returns to the home screen, check Settings > Storage > Games and Apps again. If the item still exists or the same error returns, delete the affected legitimate installation and reinstall it from an official source. Continued failures after the supported steps are a reason to contact PlayStation Support, not to try a security-bypass tool.
Reinstall only from an official source
If a legitimate game was damaged, remove its local installation and obtain it again from the official Game Library or a legitimate disc. Do not reinstall a package supplied by an unknown store, download page, or “unlock” prompt.
- For a digital purchase, use the account and Game Library that own the title.
- For a disc game, insert the legitimate disc and let the PS5 install from that disc.
- If a game is missing, locked, or repeatedly asks you to buy it again, check the account’s licenses and use the console’s Restore Licenses function for ownership or download problems.
- Keep the system software current before judging whether a clean installation solved the problem.
A reinstall repairs local content; it does not fix an account that has been accessed by someone else. If you see unfamiliar payments or changed account information, handle the account-security steps below as well.
Unlink an unfamiliar authorized service
Some third-party services are account authorizations rather than installed PS5 applications. Removing a local game will not revoke those permissions.
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Open Authorized Apps.
- Choose the service you do not recognize.
- Select Unlink, then confirm with Yes, Unlink.
Unlinking stops the listed service’s account authorization. It does not delete a locally installed game or app, remove a library entitlement, reverse an unknown payment, or prove that the account is otherwise secure. Perform the Storage deletion and account review separately when both issues are present.
Secure the PlayStation account
Unexpected software can be a symptom of an account problem, especially when you also see purchases, changed details, or prompts that you did not initiate. Review Account Management for unfamiliar payments and account changes, then use Sony’s compromised-account recovery process if anything is wrong.
Recommended Free Tools
Change the sign-in method
- Change the password immediately, or use a passkey if that option is available to you.
- Choose a unique password that you do not reuse on another service.
- Never enter the new credential into a third-party store or an on-console prompt you cannot verify.
Sony’s security guidance is direct: “Never share your account details with anyone else.” Sharing credentials also breaches Sony’s Terms of Service, even when the other person claims to be helping with a download or unlock.
Protect local access and purchases
- Enable a console login passcode so another person with physical access cannot simply open your profile.
- Require a password at checkout to prevent purchases made from an unlocked console.
- Review payment methods and transaction history for charges you do not recognize.
Contact PlayStation Support for unknown payments, changed account details, or continued suspicious activity after you change the password and unlink unfamiliar services. Support can direct you through the account-recovery process; deleting an app alone cannot reverse an account takeover.
Use Reset Your Console only as a last resort
A full reset is appropriate only when supported deletion, updates, database rebuilding, account unlinking, and a clean official reinstall have not solved the problem, or when you need to return the PS5 to a known-clean state and accept the consequences.

- Confirm that you know the sign-in details for the legitimate PlayStation account that owns your games.
- Use the PS5’s labeled Reset Your Console command. Read the confirmation screen carefully before accepting.
- Let the reset finish without disconnecting power.
- Complete initial setup, install system software through official Sony channels, and reinstall games only from the official Game Library or legitimate discs.
Sony says Reset Your Console erases data on the console’s storage. A reset is therefore not a routine way to remove one suspicious game, and it should never be the first response to a library listing or an account authorization.

USB recovery when the PS5 cannot update normally
A PS5 USB cable is relevant to recovery only in a narrow situation: the console cannot update through its normal software path and Sony’s USB procedure is required. The procedure needs a DualSense controller connected by USB, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and the appropriate system-software update file placed on that drive according to Sony’s instructions.
- Use the USB method for an update or recovery failure, not for ordinary deletion.
- Do not use a drive containing an unofficial “cleaner,” jailbreak, or modified system package.
- Keep the controller connected by the cable while Safe Mode requires it.
- If the console still cannot complete the official recovery, stop experimenting and contact PlayStation Support or an authorized repair provider.
You do not need a special cable merely to delete an installed game from Settings > Storage > Games and Apps. The cable becomes part of the documented USB-recovery setup only when normal updating is unavailable.
Choose the least destructive recovery step
| Action | Use it when | Console data impact | Account or license effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete from Games and Apps | A suspicious game or app is installed locally | Removes the selected local installation; it is not the Reset Your Console command. | Does not unlink an authorized service or resolve an account compromise. |
| System or title update | The PS5 or a legitimate title is out of date or behaving unexpectedly | Not stated as an erase operation in Sony’s update guidance. | Does not grant ownership of an unlicensed title. |
| Rebuild Database | Deletion or game errors persist and the console can enter Safe Mode | Supported filesystem/database repair; Sony’s cited procedure does not describe it as a full storage wipe. | Does not remove account authorizations. |
| Unlink in Authorized Apps | An unfamiliar third-party service has account permission | Does not remove a local game installation. | Removes the selected authorization; payment and account-recovery issues still require separate action. |
| Reset Your Console | Other supported recovery steps fail and you accept a full wipe | Erases data on console storage; back up first where possible. | License status is not changed by the reset; use the legitimate account and restore licenses if ownership or downloads need repair. |
Troubleshoot the situations people commonly mistake for an install
The strange item is in Game Library but not in Storage
Do not launch it just to find out what it is. Check Settings > Storage > Games and Apps. If there is no local installation, review Authorized Apps, Account Management, payments, and account changes. A library entry is handled as an ownership or account question, not as a file-deletion question.
The delete command fails or the PS5 reports a game error
Install the latest system software, run Check for Update on the affected legitimate title, then enter Safe Mode and use Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database. Afterward, remove and reinstall the legitimate copy from the Game Library or disc if necessary.

Verify that you deleted the local copy from the correct storage location and that you are not seeing a library listing. If an unknown service is also authorized, unlink it and secure the account; otherwise a synced account or ownership issue may be recreating the listing.
An unfamiliar prompt asks for your password
Close it without entering credentials. Change the account password or switch to a passkey, enable a console login passcode, require a password at checkout, and review Account Management. Contact PlayStation Support if you entered the credential or see any account change you did not make.
You find an unknown payment
Do not rely on deleting the game to resolve the charge. Review Account Management, change the sign-in method, and contact PlayStation Support for the compromised-account process and payment investigation.
The PS5 cannot reach the home screen
Turn it off, hold the power button until the second beep, connect the DualSense with a USB cable, and use the supported Safe Mode options. If a normal update is impossible, follow Sony’s FAT32-or-exFAT USB recovery procedure. Do not install an unofficial system image.
Quick Recap
Final safety checklist
- Classify the problem as local storage, library/ownership, authorized service, or account compromise.
- Delete local software only through Settings > Storage > Games and Apps.
- Unlink unfamiliar services through Settings > Users and Accounts > Authorized Apps > Unlink > Yes, Unlink.
- Update the system and title through the PS5’s own update controls.
- Use Safe Mode database rebuilding only for persistent deletion or game errors.
- Reinstall legitimate games from the official Game Library or a legitimate disc, and restore licenses when ownership or download checks fail.
- Change compromised credentials, use a unique password or passkey, enable a login passcode, and require a checkout password.
- Back up before using Reset Your Console, because the reset erases console storage.
- Use a PS5 USB cable only when the documented USB-recovery procedure requires it, not as a routine deletion accessory.
