To remove the WordPress Admin Bar (Toolbar) from the front end, use WordPress’s supported visibility API rather than CSS. Add add_filter( 'show_admin_bar', '__return_false' ); to code that runs for the site, or call show_admin_bar( false ); conditionally when you need to keep the bar for administrators.
This changes what logged-in users see while viewing the public site. It does not remove dashboard navigation, change a user’s capabilities, or prevent access to /wp-admin/.

The Admin Bar, now documented as the Toolbar, is the dark bar WordPress can display above the front-end page for logged-in users. Depending on the user’s permissions and site configuration, it contains links to WordPress information, post and page creation, user management, comment review, and update notices.
Its visibility is separate from authorization. Hiding the bar does not revoke the ability to edit content, manage users, or open the dashboard. Conversely, leaving the bar visible does not grant capabilities that the account does not already have.

Front end and dashboard are different scopes
The show_admin_bar filter controls the Toolbar on the front side of the website. WordPress’s current hook documentation says you cannot turn off the Toolbar on the WordPress dashboard through this mechanism. A front-end rule therefore removes the strip above your public pages without removing dashboard navigation.
Choose the right method
| Method | Front end | Dashboard | Targeting | Maintenance and risk | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
add_filter( 'show_admin_bar', '__return_false' ); |
Hides it for users affected by the filter | Does not disable dashboard Toolbar behavior | Usually all logged-in users in that execution context | Simple, but a broadly scoped shared-plugin filter can conflict with other code | Visibility only |
show_admin_bar( false ) in a condition |
Hides it when the condition is true | Does not remove dashboard permissions or navigation | Roles, capabilities, or other runtime conditions | Best for an explicit policy; keep the condition narrow | Visibility only |
| User profile preference | Individual user can hide it while viewing the site | Does not remove dashboard access | One user at a time | No code, but users must change their own setting | That user’s front-end display preference |
| Role-based settings plugin | Depends on the plugin’s rules | Depends on the plugin; verify its scope | May include roles, capabilities, devices, pages, or time windows | Settings-based, but maintenance and compatibility must be checked | Normally visibility; it should not be treated as an authorization system |
For a site-wide front-end policy, use the filter. For “hide it from regular users but keep it for administrators,” use a capability check. For a single account, the profile preference is the least invasive option.
Hide the bar for everyone on the front end
Use the documented filter
Returning false from the show_admin_bar hook is WordPress Developer Resources’ recommended way to hide the bar. Add this code in a site-specific plugin, a child theme’s functions.php, or another controlled location that loads on the front end:
<?php
add_filter( 'show_admin_bar', '__return_false' );
The callback always returns false, so users for whom this code runs will not receive the front-end Toolbar. The mechanism was available when show_admin_bar() was introduced in WordPress 3.1.0.
Where to put it
- Site-specific plugin: Use this when the policy belongs to the site rather than to a particular theme. A plugin keeps the rule when the theme changes.
- Child-theme
functions.php: Use this when the behavior is intentionally part of the theme. Put it in the child theme, not the parent theme, so a parent-theme update does not overwrite it. - Code-management or deployment system: Use your normal controlled PHP deployment process if your site does not permit dashboard editing.
Do not paste PHP into a CSS customizer field or a page editor. If you cannot safely edit PHP, use the profile setting or a maintained settings-based plugin instead.
Keep the bar for administrators and hide it for other users
When the requirement is “non-administrators should not see the bar,” a capability test is more flexible than testing one literal role name. The following example runs after the theme is set up and keeps the Toolbar for users who have the manage_options capability:

<?php
add_action( 'after_setup_theme', function () {
if ( ! current_user_can( 'manage_options' ) ) {
show_admin_bar( false );
}
} );
Users with manage_options retain the front-end bar. Everyone else for whom the callback runs has it hidden. This is a visibility rule; it does not add or remove manage_options or any other capability.
Why capability targeting is usually preferable
Roles are labels assigned to users, while capabilities express what an account can do. A custom role may have administrative capabilities without being named “administrator,” and a site may alter role definitions. Testing the capability that represents your policy continues to work when role names or membership change.
Subscriber-specific example
WordPress.org support documents this subscriber-targeted pattern:
<?php
function hide_admin_bar_for_subscribers() {
if ( current_user_can( 'subscriber' ) ) {
show_admin_bar( false );
}
}
add_action( 'after_setup_theme', 'hide_admin_bar_for_subscribers' );
This checks the subscriber condition supplied in that support example. If your real requirement is “all users without administrative control,” the manage_options capability check is generally the better fit because it covers custom roles and capability assignments rather than one named role.
Call show_admin_bar() directly when you need a condition
show_admin_bar( false ) sets the display status and may be called immediately from a plugin or from theme code. The conditional action examples above defer the decision until after_setup_theme, a common point at which theme behavior is initialized.
Use a direct call when the condition is already known and local to the code that controls the site. Use the filter when you want to participate in WordPress’s normal Toolbar visibility calculation. Do not combine several unrelated callbacks that alternately force true and false; the final result can then depend on load order and make maintenance difficult.

Let an individual user hide the bar
Each logged-in user can control the front-end display preference from the profile screen. In the WordPress dashboard, open the user’s profile and clear Show Toolbar when viewing site, then save the profile.
WordPress reads that preference while calculating front-end visibility. It is therefore possible for a user to have no Toolbar even when your code does not force it off. This setting affects that user’s display and does not alter the permissions attached to the account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If a site-wide filter returns false, changing the profile preference cannot make the bar reappear for that user because the code is explicitly forcing the hidden result. Conversely, if your code does not force a result, the profile setting can explain why one user sees a bar and another does not.
No-code role and visibility rules
A WordPress.org listing titled “Hide Admin Bar Based on User Roles” advertises settings for subscribers, WooCommerce customers, all users, and custom visibility by role, capability, device, page, or time. This can be useful when site staff need an interface for rules rather than PHP.
- Check when the plugin was last maintained and whether its tested WordPress versions match your installation.
- Confirm whether its rule applies only to the front end or also attempts to alter dashboard behavior.
- Test administrator, editor, subscriber, and any custom roles after activation.
- Review whether another plugin or theme also filters
show_admin_bar.
Use such a plugin for presentation preferences, not for access control. Permissions belong in WordPress roles and capabilities.
What not to do
Do not unhook _wp_admin_bar_init()
WordPress explicitly warns that unhooking _wp_admin_bar_init() does not properly remove the Toolbar. Use show_admin_bar( false ) or the show_admin_bar filter instead. The supported API lets WordPress calculate visibility and avoids leaving initialization in an inconsistent state.

Do not rely on CSS as the primary solution
A rule such as display:none may hide pixels, but it does not change Toolbar generation, user preferences, or permissions. It can also leave layout artifacts and becomes brittle when markup or styles change. CSS is appropriate only for a deliberate visual adjustment after the supported visibility rule has done its job.
Troubleshoot a bar that will not disappear
Confirm that the code is loading
- Verify that the PHP file is active and has no syntax error.
- Check that the code is in an active plugin or the active child theme, not an inactive theme directory.
- Log out and back in, then test a private browser window so cached authenticated pages do not confuse the result.
- Test the public front end, because the documented hook does not switch off the dashboard Toolbar.
Look for a competing filter or condition
Another plugin, a must-use plugin, or theme code may return true later, or may call show_admin_bar( true ) for a particular user. Search active code for show_admin_bar, show_admin_bar filters, and direct references to Toolbar setup. Consolidate the policy into one clearly documented condition where possible.
Check the profile preference
If only one account is affected, open that account’s profile and inspect Show Toolbar when viewing site. A cleared preference can make the Toolbar absent even when the site has no global hiding rule.
Investigate a missing bar that you did not intentionally hide
WordPress’s Toolbar documentation notes that a theme may fail to call wp_footer(), or a plugin may have disabled the Toolbar. Confirm that the theme’s footer template contains the normal wp_footer() call before the closing body tag. A missing call can prevent expected front-end scripts and markup from being printed.
Fix a blank strip after hiding it
If the bar is gone but a blank band remains, inspect the theme’s body margins, top padding, Toolbar-related styles, cached CSS, and optimization layers. Clear page and asset caches after changing the rule. Remove only the style that creates the gap; do not restore the Toolbar just to compensate for a layout rule.
Test cache and optimization layers
Full-page caches, fragment caches, CSS combination, and JavaScript optimization can serve an older version of the page to logged-in users. Purge relevant caches and temporarily disable optimization while testing. Make sure your test account is not viewing a cached anonymous response.

A practical implementation checklist
- Define the scope: front end only, or a separate dashboard policy.
- Decide whether every user, a capability group, or one individual should be affected.
- Use the
show_admin_barfilter for a blanket front-end rule. - Use
show_admin_bar( false )inside a capability-based condition when administrators must retain the bar. - Place the code in a site-specific plugin or child theme and keep a rollback copy.
- Test with an administrator and each affected role, including custom roles.
- Verify the user profile preference and the theme’s
wp_footer()call. - Clear caches and inspect layout spacing if a blank strip remains.
- Remember that hiding the Toolbar never changes capabilities or dashboard access.
Common decisions answered directly
Can I hide the bar only for subscribers?
Yes. Use the subscriber-specific condition shown above, or use a capability-based rule if the real policy is broader than one role name.
Can administrators keep it while everyone else loses it?
Yes. Test current_user_can( 'manage_options' ) and call show_admin_bar( false ) only when that test fails.
Will this remove the WordPress dashboard menu?
No. The documented visibility hook applies to the front-end Toolbar. It does not remove dashboard navigation or grant or revoke permissions.
Why does one user still see no bar after I remove my code?
That account may have cleared Show Toolbar when viewing site in its profile. Check the preference before changing theme or plugin code.
Why is the bar missing for everyone even though I did not hide it?
Check for a missing wp_footer() call in the active theme and for a plugin that disables the Toolbar. These are documented causes of an unexpectedly absent front-end bar.
