If a browser asks for a username and password before the normal WordPress login form appears, a second authentication layer is protecting the site. WordPress normally redirects a logged-out request for /wp-admin/ to /wp-login.php, which displays an HTML form. A browser-native credential dialog usually comes from HTTP Basic Authentication configured in the web server, hosting control panel, reverse proxy, staging gate, or a security plugin.
Remove or narrow that Basic Auth rule at the layer that created it. Do not delete WordPress core files or edit wp-login.php. The sections below show how to identify the layer, recover access if you are locked out, and test routes such as AJAX, REST, frontend login, mobile apps, and SSO.

First, identify which login prompt you are seeing
The distinction matters because the two prompts are generated by different systems.
| What appears | What it means | Where to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| A browser dialog asking for a username and password, often before any page styling loads | HTTP Basic Authentication has issued a server challenge | Apache or Nginx rules, a hosting-panel password gate, a reverse proxy, a staging lock, or a security plugin |
| A WordPress-branded page with fields, buttons, “Remember Me,” or a lost-password link | The normal wp-login.php form |
WordPress login settings, themes, plugins, cookies, or redirects |
| The browser dialog appears only on a staging hostname | The staging environment is probably intentionally password-protected | Staging or maintenance controls in the hosting panel or deployment system |
| The dialog appears after a recent plugin or server-file change | A newly enabled authentication rule is likely responsible | The changed plugin, .htaccess, Nginx configuration, or proxy policy |
WordPress Developer Resources describes the effect directly: “Adding server-side password protection (such as BasicAuth) to /wp-admin/ adds a second layer of protection around your blog’s admin area, the login screen, and your files.” That is why you can be asked for credentials twice: once by the server and again by WordPress.

Check the scope before removing anything
Find out whether the challenge covers only the administrator area or the entire site. Open the home page, /wp-login.php, /wp-admin/, and any public frontend login URL in a private browser window. Note whether the popup appears on all of them or only one path.
- Only
/wp-admin/: look for a directory-level rule or a hosting-panel setting aimed at the administrator directory. /wp-login.phpas well: the rule may intentionally cover the login screen, or the server may be protecting a parent directory.- Every URL: inspect the site-wide server rule, reverse proxy, maintenance gate, or staging lock before changing WordPress settings.
- Only selected requests: check whether a proxy or plugin applies authentication by path, IP address, user agent, or environment.
Do not assume that protecting the whole /wp-admin/ directory is harmless. WordPress and connected services can call wp-admin/admin-ajax.php, REST endpoints, frontend login rewrites, mobile-app APIs, Jetpack connections, and SSO callbacks. A broad challenge can make those requests fail even while the dashboard itself opens.

Apache rules in .htaccess
On Apache hosting, a directory-level rule is commonly stored in the site’s .htaccess file. Download or copy the file before editing it. Search for authentication directives such as AuthType Basic, AuthName, AuthUserFile, Require valid-user, or a conditional block that applies them to the administrator directory.
- Use SFTP or the hosting file manager to make a backup of
.htaccess. - Locate the block that enables Basic Auth. Confirm that it belongs to the popup rather than to another unrelated rule.
- Remove that block, or narrow its path so it does not cover routes your site must serve without the extra challenge.
- Save the file, then test the home page,
/wp-login.php,/wp-admin/, and required integrations. - If the site returns a server error, restore the backup immediately and ask the host to validate the configuration.
Do not remove WordPress’s rewrite rules indiscriminately. The goal is to remove the authentication directives, not the rules that route requests to WordPress.

Nginx configuration
On Nginx, the rule is normally outside the WordPress files, in the server or location configuration. Search the active configuration for auth_basic and auth_basic_user_file, and check whether they are attached to /wp-admin/, /wp-login.php, or a parent location.
- Ask the hosting provider where the active Nginx configuration is managed if you cannot see it.
- Record the existing directives and the location block before making a change.
- Remove or narrow the Basic Auth directives, then reload Nginx using the host’s documented process.
- Test both browser navigation and programmatic routes such as AJAX and REST.
Managed hosts often do not permit customers to reload Nginx directly. In that case, support must apply and validate the change.

Many panels provide a “Password Protect,” “Directory Privacy,” “Privacy,” or similar control that writes the server rule for you. Open the site’s domain or directory security section and inspect protection for the document root, wp-admin, and wp-login.php.
- Disable protection only for the directory or file that is generating the unwanted prompt.
- Check whether the panel has separate settings for production, staging, and preview environments.
- Save the change and wait for the host or proxy configuration to reload.
- Retest in a private window so an old browser challenge does not confuse the result.
If the panel shows no protection but the prompt remains, the rule may be enforced upstream by a reverse proxy or security service. Contact the host with the exact URL that produces the dialog.

Staging, maintenance, or preview gates
A staging site may intentionally use a password before WordPress loads. If the popup appears only on staging, remove the staging password gate or use the credentials configured for that environment. Do not remove production authentication by mistake; confirm the hostname and environment in the panel first.
Security plugins
A security plugin can add HTTP authentication even when the web server files look normal. If you can reach the dashboard, open that plugin’s authentication or hardening settings and turn off the HTTP Basic Auth feature, then save and test.
If the popup prevents dashboard access, use SFTP or the hosting file manager:
- Make a backup of the plugin directory name and any recently changed files.
- Temporarily rename the directory of the plugin that added the rule. Renaming prevents WordPress from loading it without deleting its data.
- Open
/wp-login.phpand sign in using the normal WordPress form. - Correct the plugin’s authentication setting or update its configuration, then restore the directory name and reactivate it.
- Retest every dependent route before leaving the feature enabled.
If you are unsure which plugin is responsible, disable recently changed security or login plugins one at a time, testing after each change. Keep a record so you can restore the correct directory name.

Choose the least disruptive remedy
| Remedy | Configuration layer | Typical route scope | Possible impact | Recovery when locked out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Remove a Basic Auth block from .htaccess |
Apache | A directory, file, or parent directory | Broad rules can affect login, AJAX, REST, frontend rewrites, apps, Jetpack, and SSO | Restore the backed-up file through SFTP or the file manager |
| Change Nginx authentication directives | Nginx web server | A location block or entire virtual host | Incorrect scope can challenge every request or prevent proxy callbacks | Ask the host to revert or reload the previous configuration |
| Disable directory privacy | Hosting panel | The selected directory or document root | May remove an intentional staging barrier if the wrong environment is selected | Use the panel or contact hosting support |
| Remove a staging or maintenance gate | Deployment or hosting system | Usually the complete staging hostname | Exposes a preview site if removed without another access control | Re-enable the gate or use the configured staging credentials |
| Disable or reconfigure a security plugin | WordPress plugin | Plugin-defined paths or requests | May also change other hardening features | Rename the plugin directory through SFTP or a file manager |
| Narrow a reverse-proxy policy | Proxy or firewall in front of WordPress | Host, path, IP range, or environment | Overly broad policies can block APIs, SSO, and automated clients | Use the proxy control panel or request a provider rollback |
The safest fix is normally the smallest scope that meets your security requirement. If you need an additional barrier for a private staging site, keep it there; do not carry it into public production routes unintentionally.
What to do if the popup started after a file edit
Restore the previous version of the file rather than deleting WordPress files. For .htaccess, replace the edited copy with your backup. For a managed Nginx configuration, request a rollback. If the popup disappears after the rollback, reapply only the intended rewrite or caching change and test after each edit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you cannot identify the changed line, compare the current file with the last known working copy. Preserve unrelated redirects and rewrite rules; removing them can create a different outage that hides the original cause.

Clearing cookies cannot remove a server rule, but it can eliminate stale credentials or redirects after the rule has been corrected. Clear cookies and cached data for the site, close all tabs, and retry in a private window.

If the browser no longer shows a popup but the login keeps looping, check the site’s HTTPS and URL configuration. Verify that WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL use the intended scheme and hostname, and inspect caching, firewall, and proxy redirects. A mismatch between HTTP and HTTPS or between two hostnames can repeatedly send you between login endpoints even after Basic Auth is gone.
- Use one canonical hostname and HTTPS scheme for the test.
- Temporarily bypass page and object caches while diagnosing.
- Check whether a proxy is forwarding the original protocol and host correctly.
- Test with a private window and a second browser to separate server behavior from stored state.
Recovery plan when you are locked out
- Confirm the prompt: a browser credential dialog points to HTTP Basic Auth; a WordPress form points to WordPress authentication.
- Use an alternate access path: SFTP, the hosting file manager, the hosting panel, or the proxy control panel.
- Disable the most likely layer: remove the relevant server rule, turn off directory privacy, remove the staging gate, or rename the suspected plugin directory.
- Retest the login URL: open
/wp-login.phpdirectly in a private window. - Correct the setting: once signed in, change the plugin or panel option that created the challenge rather than leaving the temporary workaround in place.
- Restore and verify: restore renamed plugin directories and test all required routes, including integrations that do not use a browser.
When a host owns the rule, provide support with the exact path, hostname, time the popup began, and whether it affects the whole site or only /wp-admin/. Ask them to remove or narrow HTTP Basic Auth for /wp-admin/, /wp-login.php, and any required AJAX or API routes.
Test the site after removing the extra prompt
Do not stop after the dashboard opens. A successful browser login proves only that one request passed.
- Open the public home page and a normal post while logged out.
- Open
/wp-login.phpdirectly and confirm that only the WordPress form appears. - Open
/wp-admin/while logged out and confirm the normal redirect towp-login.php. - Sign in and perform an action that uses
admin-ajax.php, such as saving a setting or loading a dashboard widget. - Check any REST-based editor, frontend login rewrite, mobile app, Jetpack connection, or SSO callback that the site depends on.
- Repeat the checks in a private window and, if applicable, from an external network.
If one integration fails, restore the narrowest protection that still meets your goal and add an exception for that route at the layer enforcing authentication. Document the rule, its owner, and the paths intentionally protected so a future server or plugin change does not recreate the mystery popup.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Deleting
wp-login.phpor core files: this does not remove a server challenge and can damage the installation. - Changing the WordPress password first: the browser dialog is issued before WordPress can check that password.
- Disabling every plugin at once: you may lose unrelated settings and make the responsible plugin harder to identify.
- Removing all of
.htaccess: this can break permalinks, redirects, and other required rules. - Testing only the dashboard: full-directory protection can silently break AJAX, REST, apps, Jetpack, or SSO.
- Assuming cookies are the cause: clearing them helps only with stale browser state; it cannot undo a live server rule.
- Disabling production protection while intending to change staging: verify the hostname and environment before saving panel settings.
Keeping an extra protection layer when it is intentional
HTTP Basic Auth can be appropriate for a private staging or development environment. If you retain it, scope it deliberately, record which paths and clients must be exempt, and give administrators a recovery method that does not depend on the WordPress dashboard. Recheck the arrangement whenever you add a frontend login, REST integration, mobile app, Jetpack connection, or SSO provider.
For a public production site, the normal WordPress login should generally be the only prompt users encounter unless your team has a documented reason for an additional server or proxy control. The important distinction is not whether a second layer exists, but whether it is attached to the correct environment and routes.
