Let the cookware cool completely, then start with warm soapy water and a soft, non-abrasive sponge. If food is still bonded to the enamel, Le Creuset’s care guidance recommends either a 15–20 minute warm-water soak or a simmer using one or two tablespoons of baking soda for about 8–10 minutes. Cool and drain the pan, then clean gently. For discoloration that remains after the food is gone, use a baking soda paste or a cleaner labeled for enameled cast iron. Never use metal scouring pads or harsh abrasives, and do not put a hot pan straight into cold water.

What to do first

Stubborn residue is usually safest to remove in stages rather than by increasing scrubbing pressure. Enameled cast iron combines a heavy cast-iron body with a glass-like enamel surface. The enamel can be damaged by thermal shock, metal tools and harsh abrasives, even when the underlying cast iron is durable.

  1. Move the cookware off the heat and wait until it reaches room temperature.
  2. Fill it with warm water and mild dish soap.
  3. Use a soft natural-fiber or nylon sponge or brush.
  4. If residue remains, choose either a warm soapy soak or the baking-soda simmer described below.
  5. After the residue loosens, rinse and dry the cookware completely.

Le Creuset gives these times and quantities for its own enameled cast-iron cookware. They are useful starting points, not independently tested universal limits for every brand, enamel color or type of food.

Why food sticks and why enamel needs a gentle approach

Excessive heat leaves a harder residue

Le Creuset identifies excessive heat as a common cause of stuck-on food. Heated oils and fats can polymerize or bake onto the cooking surface, leaving a sticky film that ordinary washing does not remove easily. For Le Creuset cookware, the company recommends low to medium heat rather than prolonged high heat.

Thermal shock can damage the enamel

A very hot pan plunged into cold water changes temperature abruptly. That thermal shock can damage enamel. Cooling the pan naturally before adding water is therefore a safety step, not merely a comfort preference. Warm water is also a better match for a room-temperature pan than an icy rinse.

Scratching creates a separate problem

Metal pads and harsh abrasive cleaners can scratch or otherwise damage the enamel. More force is not a substitute for softening the residue. The methods below use water, heat and mild materials to loosen food before gentle wiping.

Gather the right supplies

  • Warm water
  • Mild dish soap
  • A soft nylon or natural-fiber sponge or brush
  • Baking soda
  • A clean towel for thorough drying
  • Optional: a baking soda paste, a purpose-made enameled cast iron cookware cleaner, or a compatible Bar Keepers Friend formulation for persistent stains

Le Creuset’s cast-iron category manager, Sara, says: “I like to use a soft nylon cleaning pad to clean my Dutch oven at home.” A soft nylon pad is different from a metal scouring pad: it should not have exposed wire, aggressive grit or a texture that scratches the enamel.

Method 1: Wash normally after the pan cools

Use this method when the pan has ordinary cooking residue or when a stain has already softened.

  1. Set the cookware aside until it is cool to the touch and at room temperature.
  2. Add warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap.
  3. Clean with a soft sponge or soft brush, working over the bottom, sides and corners where food collects.
  4. Rinse away all soap and loosened food.
  5. Dry the interior, rim and exterior thoroughly with a towel or let the cookware air-dry completely before storing.

Do not start by attacking a dry, baked-on patch with a rough pad. If gentle washing does not remove it, move to a controlled soak or simmer instead of increasing the abrasiveness.

Method 2: Warm soapy soak for stuck-on food

A warm soak is the simplest first treatment for food that is attached but not heavily carbonized. Le Creuset recommends soaking the cookware in warm soapy water for about 15–20 minutes.

  1. Allow the cookware to reach room temperature.
  2. Cover the affected area with warm water and add mild dish soap.
  3. Leave it undisturbed for approximately 15–20 minutes.
  4. Use a soft sponge or brush to lift the softened food.
  5. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.

The soak softens the bond between the residue and enamel; it is not a license to use a metal scraper afterward. If a patch remains, drain the pan and use the baking-soda simmer rather than scraping harder.

Method 3: Baking-soda simmer for burnt or firmly bonded residue

When a soak is not enough, Le Creuset provides a more active option: simmer warm water with one or two tablespoons of baking soda for about 8–10 minutes.

  1. Let the cookware cool completely before filling it.
  2. Add enough warm water to cover the stuck-on food.
  3. Stir in one or two tablespoons of baking soda.
  4. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and keep it simmering for about 8–10 minutes.
  5. Turn off the heat and allow the contents and cookware to cool.
  6. Drain the liquid only after it has cooled sufficiently to handle safely.
  7. Wash the softened residue with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft sponge.
  8. Rinse and dry the cookware thoroughly.

The specified quantity and time come from Le Creuset’s care instructions for its cookware. Do not assume that a longer, more vigorous boil is better. A gentle simmer followed by cooling protects the enamel and makes the residue easier to remove without force.

Method 4: Treat discoloration after the food is gone

A pan can be clean yet still show brown, gray or dull marks. Treat this as a stain or discoloration problem rather than continuing to scrub as though food were still present. Le Creuset names three optional approaches: a purpose-made enameled cast iron cookware cleaner, Bar Keepers Friend, or a baking soda paste.

Baking soda paste

Moisten baking soda with enough water to make a spreadable paste. Apply it to the discolored area and work it gently with a soft sponge. Rinse all of the paste away and dry the cookware. This is a low-abrasion option, but pressure should remain light; the paste should do the work rather than aggressive scouring.

Purpose-made cookware cleaner

A cleaner specifically labeled for enameled cast iron is another option when ordinary washing and baking soda do not remove the mark. Le Creuset describes its Pots and Pans Cleaner, sold in an 8.5 fl oz bottle, as intended for heat stains, discoloration, grit, grime and everyday buildup on enameled cast iron and stainless steel. Follow the product label, use a soft tool, rinse completely and verify that the cleaner is suitable for your cookware’s finish.

Bar Keepers Friend

Le Creuset also lists Bar Keepers Friend as an option for stubborn stains. The product line includes different formulations, so check the exact container’s directions and compatibility before applying it to enamel. Use only the amount and contact time on its label, avoid metal pads, and rinse thoroughly.

These products are manufacturer-recommended possibilities, not the result of a head-to-head independent test. No single cleaner has been established as best for every enamel color, food residue or cookware maker.

Choose a method by the type of residue

Situation Recommended starting point Key instructions Tool restriction
Light residue or routine washing Warm water, mild dish soap and a soft sponge Cool to room temperature, wash, rinse and dry Use a soft nylon or natural-fiber sponge or brush
Stuck-on food Warm soapy soak Soak for about 15–20 minutes, then wash gently Do not scrape with metal
Burnt or firmly bonded food Baking-soda simmer Simmer warm water with one or two tablespoons of baking soda for about 8–10 minutes; cool, drain and wash Keep the simmer gentle and use a soft sponge afterward
Remaining heat stains or discoloration Baking soda paste or a compatible cookware cleaner Apply the selected product according to its directions, wipe gently, rinse and dry Avoid harsh abrasives and metal pads

The table reflects the sequence in the manufacturer guidance: start with the least aggressive method that matches the problem, then step up only when residue or discoloration remains.

What not to do

Do not shock a hot pan with cold water

Wait for room temperature before washing or soaking. A cold rinse over a very hot vessel can expose the enamel to a sudden temperature change.

Do not use metal scouring pads

Steel wool and other metal pads can scratch the enamel. They can also leave metallic marks that are harder to distinguish from food stains.

Do not use harsh abrasive cleaners

Strong abrasives can wear or scratch the finish. Choose mild dish soap, baking soda or a product specifically labeled for enameled cookware instead.

Do not extend the heat treatment unnecessarily

The baking-soda procedure is an 8–10 minute simmer in Le Creuset’s instructions. Use the stated process, allow the pan to cool, and then clean mechanically with a soft sponge. More heat is not a guaranteed solution and can contribute to the same overheating that caused the residue.

Dishwasher use and hand-washing choices

Le Creuset says its cookware is dishwasher-safe, but recommends hand washing to preserve the appearance of the finish. Repeated dishwasher cycles may dull that finish over time. If appearance matters, hand wash with warm water, mild soap and a soft sponge after the pan has cooled.

Dishwasher safety is not automatically transferable to another manufacturer’s cookware. For a different brand, consult its care instructions before putting an enameled cast-iron piece in a dishwasher.

Prevent stains from returning

Control the cooking heat

For Le Creuset cookware, keep the burner at low or medium heat unless the manufacturer’s instructions for a specific recipe say otherwise. Avoid heating an empty vessel at a high setting and watch oils and fats closely, since overheated cooking fat can leave sticky baked-on residue.

Address residue before it hardens

Once cooking is finished, let the pan cool safely and wash it rather than allowing food film to dry in place for a long period. A normal wash or short soak is easier on enamel than repeated attempts to remove a fully carbonized layer.

Dry the whole piece

Dry the cooking surface, rim, handles and exterior before storage. Complete drying prevents a damp film from remaining around the rim and makes it easier to identify any new discoloration the next time you use the cookware.

Keep a soft cleaning tool available

Having a soft nylon sponge or brush on hand makes it less tempting to reach for a metal pad when a stain appears. Replace a worn tool if it has exposed hard edges or trapped grit that could scratch the finish.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The food is still attached after a 15–20 minute soak

Drain the soak and use the baking-soda simmer: warm water plus one or two tablespoons of baking soda for approximately 8–10 minutes. Let the pan cool, drain it, and wash with a soft sponge and dish soap. Do not compensate for an unsuccessful soak by switching to a metal scraper.

The outside looks dull after repeated cleaning

Le Creuset notes that repeated dishwasher use may dull the finish’s appearance. Hand washing is the gentler routine when preserving the original look is important.

The pan was washed while it was still hot

Stop adding cold water and allow the cookware to cool naturally. Going forward, wait until room temperature before washing. If you see actual enamel damage rather than a removable mark, stop abrasive cleaning and consult the cookware maker’s care or service guidance.

You are cleaning a different brand

Use the general precautions—cool the pan, avoid thermal shock, choose soft tools and avoid harsh abrasives—but treat the soak duration, baking-soda quantity, cleaner approval and dishwasher guidance as brand-specific. The exact procedures above are documented for Le Creuset cookware and are not a universal test standard.

A practical cleaning checklist

  • Is the cookware at room temperature?
  • Have you chosen warm rather than icy water?
  • Are you using mild dish soap and a soft nylon or natural-fiber tool?
  • For stuck food, have you tried the 15–20 minute warm soapy soak?
  • For burnt food, have you used one or two tablespoons of baking soda in a gentle 8–10 minute simmer?
  • Did you let the pan cool before draining the simmering solution?
  • For discoloration, are you using baking soda paste or a cleaner labeled for enameled cast iron?
  • Have you avoided metal pads and harsh abrasive cleaners?
  • Is the cookware rinsed and completely dry before storage?
  • Are you using low to medium heat on Le Creuset cookware to reduce future baked-on residue?

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

The soak, simmer and cleaner suggestions come from Le Creuset manufacturer care material. They support practical care for that company’s enameled cast-iron cookware. They do not provide independent comparative testing, a success rate for particular foods, or a separate recipe for every enamel color and competing brand. Bar Keepers Friend and baking soda paste are listed as options, not as universally mandatory treatments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practice, the safest sequence is consistent: cool first, soften the residue with warm water or the documented baking-soda simmer, use a soft cleaning tool, and reserve a compatible stain cleaner for discoloration that remains after food has been removed.
