Let the cookware cool completely, then clean it with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft nylon or natural-fiber sponge. If residue remains, soak the pan for 15–20 minutes. For stuck or burnt food, Le Creuset’s care guidance describes simmering warm water with one or two tablespoons of baking soda for about 8–10 minutes, cooling and draining the pan, and then wiping it gently. Avoid metal pads, abrasive cleaners, sharp tools, and sudden temperature changes.
Escalate only when the gentle methods fail. A cleaner specifically labeled for enameled cast iron can help with persistent discoloration or metal marks, but your cookware maker’s instructions and the cleaner’s label take priority.
The safest cleaning sequence
Stains on enameled cast iron usually become easier to remove when they are softened before you wipe them. The goal is to loosen food and discoloration without scraping the enamel. Work through these steps in order and stop as soon as the mark is gone.
- Cool the cookware to room temperature. Never put a hot pot or pan in cold water or fill it with cold water. Le Creuset warns that the sudden temperature change can create thermal shock and crack the enamel.
- Wash with warm water and mild dish soap. Use a soft natural-fiber or nylon sponge or brush. Cover the stained area, wipe with light pressure, and rinse away the loosened residue.
- Soak remaining residue. Fill the cool cookware with warm, soapy water and leave it for about 15–20 minutes, following the timing in Le Creuset’s care article. Empty the water and wipe again with the same soft tool.
- Use a baking-soda simmer for stubborn or burnt food. Le Creuset’s care guidance suggests adding one or two tablespoons of baking soda to warm water and simmering for about 8–10 minutes. Let the cookware cool, drain it, and clean it with a soft sponge and dish soap.
- Rinse and dry completely. Remove all soap and loosened particles, then dry the interior and exterior with a clean towel.
- Consider a purpose-made cleaner only for persistent marks. Check your cookware maker’s instructions and choose a product whose label explicitly says it is suitable for enameled cast iron.
Do not jump straight to the strongest option. Each step adds more softening action while keeping the surface exposed to as little abrasion and heat stress as possible.

Choose the method by stain severity
| What you see | First choice | Supplies | Timing or caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh cooking film or light discoloration | Warm-water wash | Warm water, mild dish soap, soft nylon or natural sponge or brush | Use light pressure; rinse and dry when clean |
| Dried-on food that does not lift during washing | Warm soapy soak | Warm water, mild dish soap, soft non-metal tool | Soak about 15–20 minutes, then wipe gently |
| Stuck or burnt food | Baking-soda simmer | Warm water, one or two tablespoons baking soda, mild dish soap, soft sponge | Simmer about 8–10 minutes under Le Creuset’s guidance; cool before draining |
| Heat stains, discoloration, everyday buildup, or metal marks that remain | Cleaner formulated for enameled cast iron | Product labeled for enameled cast iron and a soft applicator | Optional; follow both the cookware and cleaner labels |
The table describes an escalation path, not a requirement to buy a product. Routine cleaning normally needs only soap, water, and a soft tool. A purchased cleaner is justified when the gentler steps leave a mark that matters to you and the product is explicitly compatible with the enamel.
Step 1: Wash gently after the pan cools
Why cooling comes first
Enameled cast iron retains heat long after cooking ends. Le Creuset’s care instructions warn against putting hot cookware into cold water or adding cold water to it because the abrupt temperature change can cause thermal shock and crack the enamel. Set the pan aside until it is cool enough to handle comfortably before starting any cleaning step.
Cooling is not the same as leaving food to harden indefinitely. Once the cookware is safe to handle, begin with warm water and mild dish soap. Warm water helps soften grease and food film without the temperature shock associated with cold water.

- Wet the cool pan with warm water.
- Add a small amount of mild dish soap.
- Work over the stain with a soft nylon or natural-fiber sponge or brush. Keep the tool moving rather than pressing hard in one spot.
- Rinse until no soap or loosened residue remains.
- Dry the cookware thoroughly with a clean towel.
Le Creuset’s Cast Iron Category Manager, Sara, describes using a “soft nylon cleaning pad” at home. That is a personal example consistent with the broader care instruction to use soft, non-metal tools; it is not a claim that one particular pad is required.
Step 2: Soak dried residue instead of scrubbing harder
If washing leaves a ring, patch, or bits of food behind, fill the cool cookware with warm soapy water and let it stand for about 15–20 minutes. The soak gives water time to penetrate and loosen the residue so the next pass can be gentle.

After the soak
- Pour out or drain the soaking water.
- Wipe the softened area with a soft nylon or natural sponge or brush.
- Repeat the wash once if small patches remain; do not switch to a metal pad or sharp edge.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.
A soak is useful for a stuck layer that is still fundamentally food residue. It is less likely to remove a permanent change in color, so treat a remaining shadow as a reason to assess the stain rather than a reason to increase scrubbing pressure.
Step 3: Simmer baking soda for burnt or tightly stuck food
For food that survives a soak, Le Creuset’s cleaning article describes a baking-soda simmer. Add one or two tablespoons of baking soda to warm water in the cookware and simmer for about 8–10 minutes. The guidance is for softening stubborn or burnt food, not for boiling an empty pan or aggressively scouring the enamel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the simmer safely
- Start with cookware that has cooled from cooking.
- Add enough warm water to cover the affected food and the one or two tablespoons of baking soda.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer and maintain it for about 8–10 minutes, as described in the care guidance.
- Turn off the heat and allow the cookware and liquid to cool.
- Drain the cooled liquid.
- Wash with mild dish soap and a soft sponge or brush.
- Rinse and dry completely.
Do not pour cold water into the hot pan after simmering. Cooling before draining is part of the same thermal-shock precaution that applies after cooking.
When to stop repeating it
If the food lifts but a darker or lighter area remains, further simmering may not improve the appearance. Move to the cookware maker’s stain-care instructions and consider a compatible cleaner rather than extending the simmer or applying more force.
Step 4: Use a compatible cleaner only for persistent marks
Le Creuset’s current care instructions identify an enameled cast iron cookware cleaner as an option for stubborn stains. Its Pots and Pans Cleaner product page describes an 8.5 fl oz bottle intended for enameled cast iron and stainless steel and for removing heat stains, discoloration, and everyday buildup. Availability and price can change, so the bottle’s current label is the authority for use.

Check compatibility before applying anything
- Confirm that the product specifically names enameled cast iron or your cookware’s material.
- Read the application, contact-time, rinsing, and ventilation directions on the label.
- Check your own cookware maker’s care instructions, because brands may set different limits.
- Use a soft, non-metal applicator unless both labels clearly permit another tool.
- Test your technique on a less visible area if the maker or cleaner recommends doing so.
A purpose-made cleaner is optional, not part of every wash. Do not substitute a generic abrasive powder, scouring pad, or unapproved chemical simply because the stain looks difficult.

Tools that protect the enamel
Preferred tools
- Soft nylon sponge or cleaning pad
- Natural-fiber sponge or soft brush
- Clean towel for drying
- Non-metal applicator approved by the cleaner’s label, if you use a specialized product
The common feature is a soft, non-metal contact surface. A soft tool can remove loosened residue without introducing the hard edges associated with metal pads or sharp implements.
Tools to leave in the cupboard
- Metal scouring pads and wire brushes
- Abrasive cleaners that can scratch enamel
- Knives, forks, or other sharp tools used as scrapers
- Any product whose label does not identify it as suitable for enameled cast iron
Le Creuset specifically warns that metal cleaning pads and abrasive cleaners or utensils may scratch enamel. A mark that does not yield to a soft tool is a signal to soften longer or reassess the method, not to apply a harder edge.
Troubleshoot the mark before escalating
Brown or black food stuck to the bottom
Treat this as residue first: cool the cookware, wash with warm soapy water, soak for 15–20 minutes, and use the baking-soda simmer if needed. After cooling and draining the simmer, wipe with a soft sponge and dish soap. If the food is gone but color remains, stop scrubbing and follow the maker’s guidance for discoloration.
A broad heat stain or dull discoloration
Heat stains and discoloration may not respond to ordinary washing because there may be little loose food left to remove. After the basic wash and soak, consult the cookware instructions. A cleaner explicitly made for enameled cast iron is the optional escalation identified in Le Creuset’s care guidance and product information.

Gray or dark marks that look like metal transfer
Do not try to erase a suspected metal mark with another metal tool. Use the gentle wash first, then check whether your cookware maker permits a compatible enameled-cast-iron cleaner. Follow the cleaner label exactly and rinse thoroughly.
A mark that remains after every approved step
The available care guidance recommends methods for stains but does not guarantee that every mark on every make or enamel surface will disappear. If the surface is smooth and intact but its color has changed, additional abrasion may create damage without restoring the original appearance. Contact the cookware maker if you need a product-specific assessment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes that cause damage
Putting a hot pan under cold water
This is the most important temperature mistake. Sudden cooling can produce thermal shock and crack the enamel, according to Le Creuset. Allow the pan to cool before washing, soaking, or adding liquid.
Scrubbing before softening
Dry, baked-on food tempts people to increase pressure. Soaking or simmering first reduces the need for force. Keep the tool soft even after the residue loosens.
Assuming “nonstick” means “scratch-proof”
The smooth enamel still requires non-abrasive care. Metal pads, abrasive cleaners, and sharp utensils can scratch it, so choose tools based on softness rather than on how aggressive they feel.

Using a cleaner without checking the label
A product suitable for another pan material is not automatically suitable for enameled cast iron. Confirm compatibility, follow the stated directions, and give your cookware maker’s instructions priority.
Leaving the pan wet
Rinse away soap and residue and dry the cookware completely. Thorough drying is part of the care instructions and prevents a clean pan from being stored with moisture left on its surfaces.
Aftercare and storage
Once the stain is removed or you have completed the approved cleaning steps, rinse the cookware thoroughly and dry it inside and out. Store it only when fully dry. If you stack enameled pieces, a soft protective layer such as a cookware protector can help prevent contact marks during storage; that storage measure does not remove an existing stain.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For future meals, cleaning soon after the cookware cools is easier than allowing food to dry for a long period. The same low-risk sequence remains appropriate: warm water, mild dish soap, a soft non-metal tool, a warm soapy soak when needed, and the manufacturer-described baking-soda simmer for stubborn food.
How to decide whether the pan is clean enough
Judge the result by both the surface and the appearance. If the residue has lifted, the enamel feels smooth, and no food remains, stop even if a faint color variation is visible. Continuing with metal or abrasive tools can trade a cosmetic mark for a scratch.
- Residue still feels raised or sticky: repeat a warm soapy soak or, for burnt food, use the baking-soda simmer as directed.
- The surface is smooth but still discolored: consult the maker’s instructions and consider a compatible cleaner; do not increase abrasion.
- You see a crack, chip, or rough edge: stop cleaning that area aggressively and contact the cookware maker for product-specific guidance.
There is no universal promise that every stain on every enamel surface can be fully removed. The safest result is a clean, intact enamel surface, even when a harmless color change remains.
