On an iPhone, “Remove from Home Screen” hides an app without deleting it; “Delete App” removes it when Apple allows deletion. On Android, a pre-installed app may have no uninstall option at all, but many phones offer Disable instead. The exact controls depend on the app, operating-system version, phone manufacturer and, for some iPhone features, your region.
Use the instructions below to choose the outcome you actually want: a cleaner Home Screen, a deleted user-installed app, or a disabled system app. Do not assume that every built-in app can be removed or that disabling one is harmless.
Choose the result you want first
“Remove” can mean three different things. Identifying the result prevents the most common mistake: hiding an icon and assuming the app was deleted.

On both platforms, the wording and availability of each control are more important than the icon itself. If you do not see the expected command, that can be a platform restriction rather than a fault with your phone.

Remove or delete an app on iPhone
Remove an app from the Home Screen without deleting it
Use this option when you want a less-cluttered Home Screen but may still need the app.
- Touch and hold the app icon on the Home Screen.
- Tap Remove App.
- Tap Remove from Home Screen.
The app stays installed and remains available in the iPhone’s App Library. This action does not delete the app or its data. It is the safest choice when you are unsure whether another feature depends on the app.
Delete an app from the Home Screen
If you want the app removed from the iPhone, repeat the first two steps above, then choose Delete App and confirm the deletion. The command appears only when Apple and the device’s restrictions permit that app to be deleted.

Delete an app from App Library
You can also work from App Library when an app is no longer on a Home Screen page.
- Swipe left past all Home Screen pages to open App Library.
- Touch and hold the app.
- Tap Delete App, then confirm.
If App Library offers only an option to add the app to the Home Screen or remove it from a page, you are changing its placement rather than deleting it. Look specifically for Delete App.
Why some built-in iPhone apps cannot be deleted
Apple does not make every built-in app removable. The list of deletable built-in apps can depend on the iOS version and region. Apple also notes that additional built-in apps may be deletable in the European Union, so instructions or lists written for another country may not match your iPhone.

What to do when Delete App is missing
Several different situations can produce the same symptom:
- The app is a non-deletable built-in app. Some Apple apps are part of the system and cannot be removed.
- Deletion is restricted by Screen Time or parental controls. Apple’s deletion guidance points to Screen Time settings when app use should be controlled rather than the app deleted.
- The iPhone is managed by an organization. A mobile-device-management (MDM) configuration can restrict app deletion.
- You are using the wrong command. Remove from Home Screen only changes placement; it does not make Delete App appear later.
If the phone is managed, the person or organization that installed the management profile may be the only party able to change the restriction. If the app is built in and Apple does not offer deletion for your device and region, hiding it or using the available Screen Time controls may be the only supported choice.
Remove or disable apps on Android
Uninstall an app that you installed
Google’s documented route uses the Play Store. It is intended for apps the user installed, not for every app that arrived with the phone.
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Choose Manage apps & devices, then Manage.
- Select the app you want to remove.
- Tap Uninstall and confirm.
Google notes that some steps on this page apply only to Android 13 and later. Menus can change with the Android version and with the phone manufacturer’s software, so a different label or layout does not necessarily indicate a problem.
If an app does not appear in the Play Store’s manageable list, identify whether it was pre-installed or supplied by an administrator before trying to remove it by another method. Do not treat the absence of Uninstall as permission to delete system files manually.
Disable a pre-installed system app
Google states plainly: “You can’t delete some system apps that came pre-installed on your Android phone.” On phones that support it, the alternative is to disable the app.
- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Open the section that lists installed apps. Depending on the manufacturer, it may be called Apps, Applications or something similar.
- Select the pre-installed app.
- Look for Disable. If it is available, read the warning and confirm only after checking whether another feature needs the app.
There is no single Android menu sequence that applies to every model. Google directs users to the phone manufacturer for device-specific disabling instructions. Use the model’s support documentation when the app settings do not contain Disable, when the command is greyed out, or when the warning is unclear.
What disabling changes
Disabling is not the same as uninstalling. It is a manufacturer-controlled way to turn off a system app when the operating system does not permit deletion. The app may stop appearing in the app list or stop running normally, but the exact behavior depends on the device.

Google warns that disabling a system app can cause other apps to misbehave and deletes associated app data. Save any information you still need from the app first. Consider the app’s role in phone calls, messaging, authentication, backups, device setup or other system functions before turning it off.
If another function stops working afterward, use the phone manufacturer’s instructions to restore or re-enable the app. The correct recovery path is model-specific, so avoid applying steps written for a different Android interface.
When Android shows no Uninstall or Disable
No removal command usually means the app is protected by the phone’s software, supplied by the manufacturer or carrier, required by another component, or controlled by an administrator. Android’s settings do not expose the same controls on every device.

- Check the app’s page in Settings for an explicit Disable command.
- Check the phone manufacturer’s support instructions for your exact model and Android version.
- If the phone belongs to an employer or school, ask the administrator whether policy prevents removal.
Do not promise that a factory-installed app can be deleted simply because a similarly named app can be uninstalled on another phone.

A safe decision process
Use this sequence before changing a pre-installed app. It keeps reversible actions ahead of destructive ones.
- Identify the app’s origin. Decide whether you installed it, whether it arrived with the operating system, or whether an organization manages the phone.
- Choose the least disruptive outcome. If your only goal is a cleaner screen, hide the icon rather than delete or disable the app.
- Check the exact command shown by the phone. On iPhone, distinguish Remove from Home Screen from Delete App. On Android, distinguish Uninstall from Disable.
- Protect needed information. Before deleting a built-in iPhone app or disabling an Android system app, save information that exists only inside that app.
- Read the warning. A warning about related features, app data or configuration files is a reason to stop and verify the app’s role.
- Use the manufacturer or platform guidance when menus differ. Android interfaces are especially model-dependent; iPhone availability can vary with iOS version, region and management restrictions.
Check these details before confirming
Take a moment to verify three details that are easy to overlook. First, determine whether the app is a personal download, an Apple built-in app, an Android system component, or software installed by an employer, school, carrier or manufacturer. The same name can describe a different package on different phones, and the origin determines which control is exposed.
Second, read the full confirmation message instead of treating it as a routine prompt. Apple may warn about user data and configuration files tied to a built-in app. Android may warn that disabling deletes associated data or can affect other apps. Those warnings are telling you that the action reaches beyond the icon.
Third, record the phone’s software context if you need help: iOS version and region on iPhone, or Android version, manufacturer and model on Android. Support instructions written for another release can show a different menu or claim a control your device does not provide. This information also helps an administrator or manufacturer identify whether a policy, carrier build or regional rule is responsible.

What each outcome means for access and recovery
Hiding an iPhone app is the least disruptive option because the app remains installed and available through App Library. It changes placement, not the app’s installation state. Deleting an app is more final for the data and configuration associated with that app, and a built-in deletion can affect linked features even when the rest of the phone continues to work.
Android’s Uninstall command is intended for an app you installed. A pre-installed app may instead expose Disable, which is a system-level switch rather than a normal uninstall. Because disabling can delete associated data and affect dependent apps, treat it as a troubleshooting decision, not merely a way to remove an icon. If a feature fails, re-enable the app using the instructions for that exact model rather than copying a sequence from another Android phone.
When no command is available, that absence is meaningful. It can reflect a protected component, a manufacturer or carrier requirement, or an administrator’s policy. Repeatedly searching for a hidden uninstall button will not overcome such a restriction; the supported alternatives are to leave the app installed, hide it where the interface permits, or ask the responsible administrator or manufacturer.

Troubleshooting common outcomes
“The icon disappeared, but I can still find the app.”
On iPhone, this is the expected result of Remove from Home Screen. Open App Library to access the installed app. It was not deleted.
“I cannot delete an Apple app.”
First, check whether Apple permits deletion of that built-in app on your iOS version and in your region. If it is non-deletable, check Screen Time restrictions and whether an MDM profile controls the phone. If none of those conditions changes the command, keep the app installed and remove it from the Home Screen instead.
“Android only offers Disable.”
That generally indicates a protected pre-installed system app. Read the warning, save needed data and verify that no other feature depends on it. Disabling can affect other apps, so use the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance if you proceed.
“Android offers neither Uninstall nor Disable.”
The phone may protect the app completely, or an administrator may control it. Confirm the app’s origin and consult the manufacturer or administrator. Do not use unsupported file-deletion methods to force removal.

Google warns that this can happen. Use the phone manufacturer’s instructions for your model to restore or re-enable the disabled app, then reassess whether the original app should remain active.

Important limits to keep in mind
- Menus are not universal. Android steps vary with the manufacturer and Android version; iPhone controls vary with iOS version, region and device management.
- Built-in does not mean removable. Both platforms protect some system components.
- Hiding is reversible in a different way from deletion. Removing an iPhone app from the Home Screen leaves it installed, while deletion or disabling can remove associated data.
- There is no guaranteed storage saving stated here. The official guidance establishes which controls are available and their effects, not a universal amount of space recovered.
- Organization-managed phones have additional rules. Screen Time, parental controls and MDM policies can override the normal deletion controls.
