To remove sweater pills safely, first read the care label and identify the fiber if you can. Lay the sweater flat, support the fabric, and use the least force that works: lift a few pills away by hand; use a sweater comb for a larger area; or consider a battery fabric shaver as a conditional alternative. Stop immediately if a tool catches a loop, pulls a yarn, or changes the surface.
Pills are loose-fiber balls created mainly by rubbing. They can be removed, but pilling can return, so gentle laundering and less abrasion matter as much as the removal method.
What sweater pills are and why they appear
A pill is a small cluster of fibers that has worked loose, tangled, and stayed attached to the garment surface. The American Cleaning Institute describes pilling as fibers breaking off through abrasion, balling up, and clinging to the fabric. The Woolmark Company likewise links pilling to rubbing during wear. Common locations include elbows, armpits, sleeves, the belly, and the sides of a sweater—places that contact another garment, a surface, or the wearer’s movement more often.
Pilling is a surface problem, not automatically a sign that the sweater is defective. Fiber length, yarn construction, and how much the garment rubs all affect how visible it becomes. Some fabrics are more resistant than others, but the American Cleaning Institute notes that pilling “cannot be prevented completely” in some fabrics. Removing existing pills improves the appearance; it does not change the underlying yarn or guarantee that new pills will not form.

Prepare the sweater before touching a pill
Read the care label
Check the washing, drying, and fiber information before choosing a tool. Sweaters differ: one may tolerate a particular wash cycle while another requires hand washing or dry cleaning. The American Cleaning Institute recommends following the garment’s own label instructions. If the label is missing, treat the knit conservatively rather than assuming it can withstand vigorous brushing or heat.
Make sure it is a pill, not a snag
A pill is a fuzzy ball sitting on the surface. A snag is a loop or strand of the sweater’s yarn pulled out from the knit. Do not tug a snag, cut a yarn loop, or run a comb over it as if it were a pill. If the object does not lift freely or the surrounding knit moves with it, stop and handle it as a repair issue instead of forcing a removal tool.
Set up a stable work surface
Lay the sweater completely flat on a clean, stable surface. Smooth it without stretching the knit, and support the area directly under the pills with your free hand. Good lighting helps you distinguish loose fuzz from a structural loop. Work on a small section at a time so you can see whether the fabric changes.

Gather only what you need
- Clean, dry hands for a few isolated pills.
- A sweater or cashmere comb for a broader patch of surface pilling.
- A battery-operated fabric shaver if you choose the alternative Woolmark lists and its instructions allow use on the garment.
Do not begin with the most aggressive-looking tool. The safest starting point is the method that lets you apply the least pressure and stop instantly. Keep the work area free of folds, jewelry, or anything that could snag the knit while you handle it.
Method 1: Remove a few pills by hand
Hand removal gives you the most direct control when only a few pills are visible. Woolmark specifically says that small numbers can be removed by hand.
- Place the sweater flat and hold the fabric around the pill so the knit does not lift with it.
- Pinch only the loose pill or fuzz between your fingertips.
- Lift it away gently, without pulling on the yarn underneath. If it resists, release it rather than increasing force.
- Check the spot from several angles. A loose fiber ball should come away without leaving a stretched loop or a thin-looking patch.
- Move to the next pill only after the surrounding knit still looks even.
Hand removal is slow for a heavily affected sweater, but it avoids introducing a blade or comb teeth to the fabric. It is especially sensible when the knit is very fine, loosely constructed, or valuable and the number of pills is small. Do not twist a pill repeatedly to make it detach; twisting can draw neighboring yarns into the cluster.
Method 2: Use a sweater comb with light, controlled strokes
A comb is the clearest tool fit when there are more pills than you can comfortably remove by hand. Woolmark advises, “A comb can be used to remove pills, but this should be done very gently and carefully.” The Cashmere and Camel Hair Manufacturers Institute also recognizes pill combs for cashmere care.

- Confirm that the sweater is flat and the area underneath is supported.
- Hold the comb as directed by its manufacturer. Keep your wrist relaxed so you do not press down accidentally.
- Start at the edge of the pilled area, not in the densest cluster. Use a short, slow pass in one direction.
- Use minimal pressure. Let the comb contact surface fuzz rather than digging into the knit.
- Lift the comb after each short pass and inspect the result. Remove collected fuzz before continuing.
- Change direction only if the fabric remains smooth and the comb is not catching. Work in small sections instead of dragging across the whole garment.
- Stop at the first catch, snag, stretched loop, or visible change in texture.
The exact pressure and motion depend on the comb and the sweater’s construction; there is no universal stroke count or force setting. A comb that glides over one dense wool knit may catch a loose or open knit. If a hidden test area shows raised fibers, shine, thinning, or distortion, do not continue on the visible front.
Choose a comb designed for knitwear rather than improvising with a sharp household blade. The point is to lift surface pills, not to cut across the fabric. Empty lint from the comb as you work so accumulated fuzz does not obscure the teeth or encourage harder pressing.
Method 3: Consider a battery-operated fabric shaver
Woolmark names a battery-operated fabric shaver (also called a depiller) as another option. That does not establish that a shaver is safer, faster, or suitable for every sweater, and the sources reviewed do not provide a comparative performance test.
- Read the shaver’s own instructions and confirm that the garment’s care information does not rule out its use.
- Make sure the sweater is flat and free of folds. A fold can bring a tool into contact with more fabric than intended.
- Use the lowest-risk setting or guard the manufacturer specifies for delicate fabric, if such a setting exists.
- Test a concealed section first. Run the device briefly and inspect for thinning, fuzzing, a change in nap, or a caught loop.
- Keep the shaver moving lightly over the surface; do not press it into the knit or linger in one spot.
- Stop immediately if the device snags, makes a loop, or leaves a visibly different patch. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and battery instructions after use.
If the sweater is cashmere, very fine, loosely knitted, or irreplaceable, hand removal or a carefully used comb provides more immediate control. Choosing a shaver is a conditional decision, not a blanket recommendation. Never use a device on a sweater that the label or device instructions exclude, and do not assume a lower price or a familiar appearance means two shavers behave alike.
Which method fits your sweater?
| Method | Best fit | How control is applied | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand removal | A few loose pills; very delicate areas | Fingertips isolate one pill at a time | Too slow for a large pilled surface |
| Sweater comb | More pills on wool or cashmere when careful passes are possible | Short strokes with minimal pressure | Can catch if pressed, dragged, or used on a snag |
| Battery fabric shaver | A larger area when the garment and device instructions permit it | Light contact while the tool moves across a flat surface | Suitability for every fiber is not established; test first |
For cashmere or another delicate knit, begin with the gentlest method and reassess after each small area. For a sturdy-looking but unfamiliar knit, the care label and a concealed test are more useful than the garment’s appearance alone. If two methods appear possible, favor the one that gives you better control over pressure and lets you stop without completing the entire garment.
Extra care for cashmere and other delicate knits
Cashmere needs the same basic sequence—label first, flat support, minimal force—but the margin for error is smaller. The Cashmere and Camel Hair Manufacturers Institute says, “They actually do sell pill combs to comb the pills and fuzz, however high quality garments are normally less prone to pilling.” That statement supports comb use while also making clear that a comb is not a reason to use force or expect a premium garment never to pill.
- Start with hand removal when only a few pills are present.
- If a comb is needed, use very short passes and inspect after each one.
- Do not pull at fibers that remain anchored or cut loops that look connected to the knit.
- Stop if the surface becomes fuzzy, shiny, visibly thinner, or uneven.
- For a valuable garment with widespread pilling or any structural damage, a professional cleaner or knitwear repair specialist is safer than repeated experimentation.
“Delicate” is not a single technical setting. A fine wool, alpaca blend, silk blend, or loose hand-knit can react differently from a dense cashmere jersey, so the garment’s label and a small test area should decide the approach.

How to prevent new pills after removal
Reduce rubbing during wear
Because friction drives pilling, minimize repeated abrasion wherever practical. Woolmark specifically recommends minimizing abrasion during wear. Pay attention to the same high-rub zones—elbows, armpits, sleeves, belly, and sides—that tend to show pills first. If one area repeatedly contacts another rough surface, removing pills without changing that contact will only provide a temporary improvement.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Turn wool garments inside out for washing
Woolmark recommends turning wool garments inside out before washing. This reduces direct exposure of the visible outer surface during the wash. Follow the garment’s label for the cycle, temperature, and detergent rather than applying a single rule to every sweater.
Skip fabric softener when the care guidance says to
Woolmark’s prevention guidance includes avoiding fabric softener for wool garments. Do not substitute a softener simply because a sweater feels rough after washing; use the labeled care method and the detergent guidance appropriate to that fiber.
Wash and dry with low agitation
The American Cleaning Institute advises using cold water when you are uncertain about a garment’s requirements. For hand-wash sweaters, it recommends gentle handling without rubbing or wringing, and it says hand-wash-only sweaters should be dried flat. These are general safeguards, not instructions to wash every sweater identically: the care label remains the controlling instruction.
Rubbing, twisting, and high agitation can add the abrasion that creates more loose fibers. Reshape the sweater as directed, support it while wet, and avoid a drying method the label does not permit. Do not treat a successful pill removal as permission to change the wash routine; laundering can undo the benefit by creating fresh abrasion.

- Pulling a stubborn pill: Resistance can mean the fiber is still anchored or that the object is a snag. Let it go.
- Working on a hanging sweater: Gravity leaves the knit unsupported and makes it harder to judge pressure. Lay it flat instead.
- Raking the entire garment in one pass: Different panels and seams can have different tension. Small sections make changes easier to see.
- Trying to fix thinning by removing more: A lighter patch cannot be blended safely by repeated shaving. Stop and compare it with an untreated area.
- Ignoring the care label because the sweater looks sturdy: Appearance does not identify fiber, construction, or permitted cleaning method.
- Assuming a premium sweater cannot pill: The cashmere institute notes that higher-quality garments are normally less prone, not immune.
What to do when removal goes wrong
The comb or shaver catches
Stop, lift the tool away, and inspect the spot. If a loop or yarn is pulled out, do not make another pass over it. A pill can be removed; a snag needs a different repair decision.
The fabric looks thinner
Stop treating that section. Repeated passes or added pressure can remove or disturb fibers beyond the original pills. Compare the treated area with an untreated section in the same light. If the difference is obvious, do not try to blend it by shaving more.

Pills return quickly
Recurrence is expected when the same friction continues; the American Cleaning Institute calls pilling a wear problem that cannot be prevented completely. Recheck the garment’s washing and drying process, turn wool inside out as Woolmark recommends, avoid unnecessary abrasion, and remove only new surface pills with the least force needed.
You cannot identify the fiber or care method
Do not infer washability or tool safety from color, thickness, or price. Use the gentlest hand method for a small number of pills. For extensive pilling on a valuable sweater, ask a professional cleaner or repair specialist rather than testing an electric tool on the visible surface.

When should you stop and seek professional help?
Stop at any structural warning: a pulled loop, exposed yarn, a hole, a seam that begins to open, or a section that becomes visibly thin or shiny. Also stop when pilling covers a large area of an expensive or sentimental sweater and you cannot identify its fiber or construction. A cleaner or knitwear repair specialist can assess damage without requiring you to experiment on the front of the garment. Professional help is especially sensible after a tool has already caught, because another pass may enlarge the pulled area.
A repeatable low-damage routine
- Read the label and identify the fiber or construction if that information is available.
- Lay the sweater flat, support the pilled area, and separate pills from snags.
- Remove a few loose pills by hand.
- For a larger area, test a sweater comb with short, gentle passes.
- Use a battery shaver only as a conditional alternative permitted by the garment and device instructions.
- Stop at any catch, loop, thinning, shine, or texture change.
- Wash and dry according to the label, turning wool inside out and minimizing abrasion where Woolmark recommends it.
This sequence keeps the decision reversible: you can always stop after hand removal or one small combed section, but you cannot undo a cut yarn or a shaved-through patch.

Can I just pick every pill off with my fingers?
Yes, when there are only a few loose pills. Pinch the fuzz, not the underlying yarn, and release any pill that resists. Hand removal is the lowest-force option but becomes impractical across a heavily pilled surface.
Is a sweater comb safe for cashmere?
The Cashmere and Camel Hair Manufacturers Institute recognizes pill combs for cashmere, and Woolmark says a comb can be used very gently and carefully. Test a hidden area, use minimal pressure, and stop if the teeth catch or the surface changes.
Is an electric fabric shaver better than a comb?
No supported comparison establishes that one is safer or faster. Woolmark lists a battery-operated shaver as an alternative, but suitability depends on the garment, construction, and device instructions. Treat it as conditional and test first.

Should I wash the sweater before removing pills?
There is no need to add an extra wash solely for pilling. Follow the care label and use the gentlest permitted handling. Washing or rubbing a sweater unnecessarily can add the abrasion associated with more pills.
Why do pills keep coming back?
Wear and laundering continue to create friction, and pilling cannot be prevented completely in some fabrics. Reduce rubbing, turn wool inside out for washing, avoid fabric softener where Woolmark advises, and follow the label for water temperature, agitation, and drying.
Can I cut pills with scissors or a razor?
The cited care guidance supports hand removal, a sweater comb, and conditionally a fabric shaver; it does not establish a scissors or razor method. Cutting can reach a yarn loop, so do not substitute a sharp blade for a tool intended for surface pills.
What if a pill is attached to a long strand?
Do not pull or cut it. A long strand may be a snag rather than a loose pill. Stop and seek repair advice if the knit has been pulled out of position.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the safest way to remove a few pills?
Lay the sweater flat, support the knit, and lift only loose pills by hand. Release any pill that resists instead of pulling the yarn.
Can I use a pill comb on cashmere?
Yes, pill combs are recognized for cashmere, but use very short, gentle passes after a concealed-area test. Stop at any catch, thinning, shine, or texture change.
Should I choose a comb or a fabric shaver?
Neither is proven universally safer or faster. A comb is the more directly supported conservative fit for wool and cashmere; a battery shaver is a conditional alternative that must follow both garment and device instructions.
How can I tell a pill from a snag?
A pill is a loose fuzzy ball on the surface. A snag is a loop or strand pulled from the knit. Do not pull, cut, or comb a strand that moves the surrounding fabric.
Why do my sweater pills return?
Friction during wear and laundering creates new loose fibers, and pilling cannot be prevented completely in some fabrics. Reduce abrasion and follow the label’s washing and drying directions.
The Bottom Line
Start with the care label, a flat supported sweater, and the least force possible. Lift a few pills by hand; use a sweater comb for more only with short, gentle passes; and treat a fabric shaver as a conditional alternative. The instant a tool catches, a loop appears, or the knit looks thinner or different, stop.
