Lay the cardigan flat, read its care label and fiber content, then test your chosen tool on a hidden area. For fine wool or cashmere, begin with a sweater comb and slow, one-direction strokes. Use an electric fabric shaver only on a knit that the label and a spot test show is suitable; use small scissors only for a few isolated pills. Never pull pills by hand or press hard. Stop immediately if a stitch catches, loosens or the fabric starts to look thin.

Why cardigans develop pills

A pill is a small fuzzy ball made when loose fiber ends tangle on the fabric surface. Rubbing during wear is the main cause. Woolmark identifies elbows, armpits, sleeves, the belly and the sides of a sweater as common locations because these areas contact the body or other surfaces. Repeated washing can add more friction: UNIQLO explains that fiber ends may tangle and mat as a knit is washed again and again.

Every cardigan can respond differently because yarn, blend, stitch density, finishing and construction vary. A pill is a surface problem, not automatically a sign that the cardigan is defective. A pulled loop or a hole is different. If a strand is still part of the knit structure, do not cut it as though it were a pill; cutting a structural stitch can create a run or enlarge a hole.

Check the cardigan before choosing a tool

Read the care label first

Garment-specific instructions take priority over general advice. Check whether the label calls for hand washing, a particular machine cycle, dry cleaning or another treatment, and note any warning about ironing, tumble drying or bleaching. UNIQLO notes that care methods differ by product, so do not assume that two cardigans made from similar-looking yarn can be treated identically.

The label may not name a depilling tool, but it still tells you how cautious to be. A specialist-cleaning instruction, an unusual fiber blend or a warning about handling is a reason to avoid experimenting with a powered or abrasive device. If the label is missing or unreadable, treat the garment as delicate and use the most controlled manual option, or ask a professional cleaner or knitwear repairer.

Identify the fiber and surface

Fine, soft fibers such as cashmere and merino wool need a lighter touch than a sturdy, densely knitted surface. A blend may behave differently from either fiber by itself. Look at the knit as well as the fiber name: a loose gauge, fluffy halo, open stitch or already-thin patch gives a tool more opportunity to catch or remove sound yarn. If the label does not make the construction clear, start with a gentle comb test rather than an electric device.

Separate pills from pulled loops

Good lighting makes this decision easier. A pill is a loose, fuzzy ball raised above the fabric. A pulled loop usually forms a strand that leads back into a stitch, while a ladder-shaped gap or open hole indicates structural damage. Do not cut, comb or shave those areas. A knitwear repairer may be able to reposition or secure a displaced loop, but removing it can turn a small problem into a run.

Make a hidden-area test

Choose an inconspicuous spot, such as an inside seam allowance, and use the planned tool with minimal pressure. Look for pulled loops, fuzz that has been cut unevenly, a shiny or thinned patch, color change or distortion. A successful test does not guarantee that every section is safe, because seams and panels may have different tension. A failed test is a reason to stop and choose a different method or a professional cleaner.

Prepare a stable work surface

Place the cardigan flat on a clean, stable surface. Smooth it without stretching it taut enough to distort the stitches. Work on a small area at a time so you can see the yarn and stop before the fabric is overworked. Depilling a cardigan while wearing it or while holding it in the air leaves the fabric unsupported and makes snags and uneven trimming more likely.

Which depilling tool is safest?

No single tool is safe for every cardigan. The right choice depends on fiber, knit density, pill size, amount of pilling and how much control you need. Choose the least aggressive tool that can solve the actual problem.

Tool Best use Advantages Main risks and limits
Sweater or cashmere comb Fine, soft wool or cashmere with surface pills Manual control and no motor; easy to limit work to one small section A forceful or sideways stroke can catch a loose stitch; it must be used very gently
Electric fabric shaver A suitable, sturdier knit with stubborn or widespread pills Faster coverage than hand trimming Pressure, guard height and knit construction matter; pressing down can remove sound fabric as well as pills
Small scissors A few distinct pills that stand clear of the surface Precise on isolated targets Slow and dependent on a steady hand; a tip that touches yarn can cut the knit
Sweater stone Stubborn pills on a surface that the label and spot test show can tolerate light abrasion Can lift persistent pills without a motor Abrasive action may affect delicate knits; changing direction without lifting can snag fibers

Woolmark says a comb can remove pills, but only very gently and carefully. Patagonia likewise recommends a slow, one-direction combing motion for suitable cashmere or merino. For an electric razor, Patagonia advises a gentle one-direction pass, while Maytag cautions that too much pressure can shave away more fabric than intended. UNIQLO lists a fabric shaver or small scissors for appropriate garments and specifically advises against pulling pills off.

The practical trade-off is control versus speed. A comb or scissors lets you stop after one pill or one small section; a shaver covers more fabric quickly but gives you less margin for a mistake. An abrasive sweater stone can address stubborn pills, yet its surface action makes a hidden-area test especially important. None of these options is a universal solution for every cardigan.

Safe pill-removal sequence

1. Separate pills from damage

Examine the raised material in good light. A pill is a loose, fuzzy ball sitting above the surface. A loop that leads into a stitch, a ladder-shaped gap or an open hole is a repair issue, not a depilling target. Leave structural yarn alone. If you cannot tell whether a strand is loose fiber or a stitch, do not cut it; seek garment-specific advice.

2. Lay the cardigan flat

Fasten buttons or the zipper if that helps the garment lie evenly, then smooth one panel at a time. Do not depill while wearing the cardigan or while holding it in the air; the fabric can shift and the tool can catch an edge or seam. Keep seams, ribbing, button bands and pockets visible so you do not run a tool into a change in construction.

3. Start with a comb on fine fibers

For cashmere, merino or another fine, soft wool that passes the hidden-area test, hold the target section gently taut without stretching the stitches. Place the comb on the surface and make short, slow strokes in one direction. Lift the comb, reset it and repeat rather than sawing back and forth. Use only enough contact to catch the pills. If the comb snags, skip that area and reassess the fabric. Woolmark’s wording is worth following literally: a comb should be used “very gently and carefully.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Work in narrow sections instead of sweeping across an entire front panel. After a few strokes, lift away the released fuzz and look again. A smooth appearance is not a reason to keep combing; once the raised pills are gone, additional passes only increase exposure to thinning or a caught stitch.

4. Use an electric shaver only on a compatible knit

Confirm that the product labeling permits the fabric and that your test patch remains intact. Keep the cardigan flat. Set the shaver’s guard as directed, place it lightly on the surface and move in one direction over a small area. Do not push down to make the shaver work faster; pressure can cut into healthy yarn. Empty lint as needed so the device continues to skim rather than drag. Stop if you see thinning, a change in texture or a stitch entering the cutting area.

Do not assume that a shaver is safer because it is fast. Guard height, pressure and knit construction all matter. Avoid seams, raised ribs and loose loops until you have confirmed that the device can pass over them without catching. If the cardigan has widespread pilling but the surface is delicate, several gentle manual sessions may be safer than one aggressive powered session.

5. Trim isolated pills with scissors

Scissors are practical when only a few pills remain. Lift your view of the pill, keep the blades parallel to the fabric and snip the pill above the yarn. Keep both tips clear of loops and seams. Never pull the pill taut before cutting: pulling can draw a sound stitch into the blades or distort the panel. This method is slower, but it gives the most precise control when the targets are clearly separated from the knit.

6. Consider a sweater stone only when appropriate

For a stubborn pill on a knit that tolerates light abrasion, Patagonia describes moving a sweater stone gently in one direction. Lift the stone before changing direction instead of rubbing it back and forth on the fabric. Because the stone abrades the surface, use it only after the label check and hidden-area test, and avoid it on a delicate knit that already looks thin. Stop at the first sign of roughening, new fuzz on sound fabric or a snag.

7. Clear the loose fiber and inspect

Brush or lift away the removed fuzz without rubbing the panel aggressively. Check the worked area from several angles and compare it with an untouched section. Inspect nearby seams and ribbing for a displaced loop. Stop when the raised pills are gone; repeated passes can thin a knit even after the surface looks smooth.

Choosing a method by fiber and condition

Cardigan condition First choice How to proceed When to stop
Fine cashmere or merino with light surface fuzz Soft sweater comb Support flat, hold gently taut and make short one-direction strokes Any catch, pulled loop or visible thinning
Sturdy knit with many stubborn pills Compatible electric shaver Spot-test, use the guard and skim lightly in one direction Texture change, snagging or fabric entering the cutter
Only a handful of raised pills Small scissors Snip each pill above the yarn without pulling it The pill is attached to a structural loop or cannot be isolated
Persistent pills on a robust, test-approved surface Sweater stone Use light, one-direction abrasion and lift before reversing Any roughening, fuzzing of sound fabric or snag
Unknown fiber, loose gauge or visibly fragile fabric Pause and seek garment-specific advice Follow the label or ask a professional cleaner or knitwear repairer Do not experiment with a powered or abrasive tool

Mistakes that damage knitwear

  • Pulling pills off by hand: The pill may be anchored to sound yarn, so pulling can elongate or break a stitch. UNIQLO specifically advises using a tool instead of pulling.
  • Pressing a shaver into the fabric: Maytag warns that pressure can remove more fabric than intended. Let the device skim.
  • Dragging a comb sideways: A comb used forcefully can catch a loose stitch. Keep strokes gentle and directional.
  • Cutting without identifying the yarn: A pulled loop or hole is part of the knit structure and should not be treated as a surface pill.
  • Working on a hanging cardigan: Unsupported fabric shifts, making snags and uneven trimming more likely.
  • Repeating passes until the surface is perfectly bare: Depilling removes material; excessive treatment can leave a thin patch.
  • Skipping the hidden-area test: Different panels, seams and blends may react differently to the same tool.
  • Using the same wash routine for every blend: Care methods differ by product. Follow the label rather than transferring a routine from another sweater.
  • Changing direction while a stone stays in contact: Patagonia advises lifting a sweater stone before reversing to reduce snags.

What to do if a stitch catches

Release the tool immediately rather than pulling it free. Put the cardigan flat and inspect the area. If a loop is merely displaced, do not cut it; a knitwear repairer may be able to reposition or secure it. If there is a ladder, hole or spreading run, stop depilling and have the garment repaired before further wear or washing. A thin patch is also a reason to stop: additional shaving or abrasion will not restore lost yarn.

How to reduce future pilling

Reduce friction in wear

Woolmark recommends minimizing abrasion during wear. Notice where a bag strap, seat belt, desk edge or belt repeatedly contacts the cardigan and change the contact point when practical. Friction at elbows, underarms, sides and the front of the body is especially common. Repeated contact does not mean you must stop wearing the cardigan; it means those high-contact areas deserve gentler handling and earlier inspection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wash with the garment turned inside out

Woolmark advises turning wool garments inside out before washing. UNIQLO similarly recommends turning knitwear inside out and using a fine-mesh laundry bag in its care guidance. These steps can reduce direct rubbing, but the cardigan’s own label still determines the correct water temperature, cycle and drying method. A laundry bag is a friction-reduction aid, not permission to use a cycle the label forbids.

Use the label’s washing method consistently

Do not apply one routine to every fiber blend. Follow the stated cycle and drying instructions, and avoid adding friction through an unnecessarily vigorous wash. Woolmark also cautions against excessive fabric softener; more product is not a substitute for the correct care method. If the label calls for specialist cleaning, use that service rather than improvising a home process.

Store the garment without stressing the knit

When the cardigan is clean and dry, keep it in a way that does not create new rubbing or stretching at the shoulders. If hanging would distort a soft knit, follow the label or the manufacturer’s storage guidance and use a flat location. Before wearing it again, check the areas that previously pilled so you can address loose surface fiber before it mats further.

When depilling is not the right solution

Do not keep removing surface fiber from a cardigan that is already thin, shedding heavily, developing holes or showing repeated pulled loops. Those symptoms point to wear, construction or a repair need rather than ordinary surface pilling. A professional cleaner or knitwear repairer can assess whether the garment can be stabilized. If the label requires specialist cleaning, let that service handle both cleaning and advice on safe surface treatment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For ordinary surface pills, the conservative approach is to begin with the least aggressive tool that matches the fiber, work on a supported flat garment, and stop as soon as the pills are removed without changing the knit’s texture. The goal is not to make every fiber disappear; it is to remove raised pills while preserving the yarn that holds the cardigan together.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know whether a fuzzy strand is a pill or a pulled stitch?

A pill is a loose, fuzzy ball sitting above the surface. A pulled loop leads back into the knit, while a ladder or hole is structural damage. Do not cut anything that appears connected to a stitch; have a repairer assess it.

Should I use a sweater comb or an electric fabric shaver first?

For fine, soft wool or cashmere, start with a sweater comb and very gentle one-direction strokes. Use an electric shaver only when the label, product directions and a hidden-area test show that the knit is suitable.

Can I remove pills by pulling them off?

No. A pill can be anchored to sound yarn, and pulling may elongate or break a stitch. Use a comb, a compatible shaver or carefully positioned scissors instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much pressure should I use with a fabric shaver?

Use only enough contact for the shaver to skim the surface. Do not press down. Maytag warns that excess pressure can remove more fabric than intended.

Are small scissors safe for cardigan pills?

They can be useful for a few isolated pills. Keep the blades above and parallel to the fabric, keep the tips away from yarn and seams, and never pull the pill toward the scissors.

Can I use a sweater stone on cashmere?

Do not assume it is safe. A sweater stone uses abrasion, so use it only when the care label and a hidden-area test show that the surface can tolerate it. Avoid it on a delicate or already-thin knit.

What should I do if my tool catches a loop?

Stop and release the tool without pulling. Lay the cardigan flat and inspect the area. Do not cut a displaced loop; seek knitwear repair if there is a ladder, hole, spreading run or thin patch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I slow down new pilling?

Turn knitwear inside out for washing, use a fine-mesh laundry bag when consistent with the care label, and minimize rubbing from bags, belts and other contact points. Follow the garment’s specified washing and drying method and avoid excessive fabric softener.

The Bottom Line

Read the label, identify the fiber, test a hidden spot and work on a flat, supported cardigan. Choose a gentle sweater comb for fine wool or cashmere, reserve a guarded shaver for compatible sturdier knits, and use scissors only for isolated pills. Never pull, press or keep working after a snag or thinning appears.
