To remove photos and recordings from Ray-Ban Meta glasses, import anything you want to keep, delete copies from every destination where they exist, then perform a factory reset before selling, gifting, or recycling the glasses. A force restart only helps with connection problems; it does not erase media. On these glasses, captures remain on the device until you move them to a phone with the Meta AI app.
The capture light cannot be switched off. Covering or tampering with it can prevent the camera from working, so privacy protection should rely on the built-in indicator, app controls, careful importing, deliberate deletion, and a verified factory reset—not physical modifications.
What happens to photos and recordings on smart glasses?
Storage and deletion behavior differs by model. The authoritative instructions available for this guide apply to Ray-Ban Meta glasses, so do not assume another brand follows the same process.

That means taking a picture does not automatically place it in your phone’s gallery. Importing creates a separate phone copy. The original remains on the glasses until it is removed by the device’s destructive reset process. A copy may also exist in a cloud-photo service, a messaging thread, a social network, a computer backup, or another export location. Those copies are separate from the on-glasses file.
The three locations you must distinguish
- Glasses storage: the original capture held on the device before import.
- Phone storage: the imported file saved in the phone’s photo gallery or another local folder.
- Other destinations: cloud-photo libraries, social posts, chats, email attachments, computers, and backups created after import or sharing.
Deleting one copy does not establish that every other copy is gone. There is no universal cross-brand rule for how a phone gallery, cloud service, or social platform handles synchronized deletion, so inspect each destination’s own controls.
Import captures before you erase anything
If you might need a photo or recording, import it before resetting the glasses. A factory reset is intended to permanently erase captures that are still on the glasses, so recovery should not be part of your plan.

Give the glasses and phone enough battery to complete a wireless transfer. Keep them close together during the import.
- Open and pair in the Meta AI app. Use the app that is already associated with the glasses. If pairing has been lost, complete the app’s pairing process before attempting an import.
- Start the download or import control. Select the captures you want and use the app’s download/import action. The exact visual control can change with an app update.
- Accept the temporary glasses Wi-Fi connection on iOS. The app may ask permission to join a temporary Wi-Fi network created by the glasses. Approve it for the transfer to proceed, then return to the app if iOS switches networks.
- Save or share only after the transfer finishes. Confirm that the selected items open in the phone’s photo gallery or the destination you chose. A thumbnail in the app is not, by itself, proof that a full phone copy exists.
- Repeat for every item you need. A partial selection leaves unimported captures on the glasses, and the reset will erase those remaining files.
Verify the backup rather than trusting the transfer screen
- Open several imported photos and play the beginning, middle, and end of longer videos.
- Check that the files appear in the phone gallery outside the Meta AI app.
- If you use automatic cloud-photo backup, wait for the service to report that synchronization is complete.
- For important recordings, make a second copy on a computer or encrypted storage before resetting.
- Do not reset while an import, upload, or export is still showing progress.
These checks protect against a common mistake: resetting after the app has listed captures but before the phone or cloud destination has actually finished writing them.
How to remove captures from Ray-Ban Meta glasses
Use a factory reset for a complete device wipe
Ray-Ban’s current FAQ states: “When Ray-Ban Meta glasses go through a factory reset, it permanently erases all captures and any associations between the glasses and your Meta Account.” This is the destructive erase step for media remaining on the glasses and for the account relationship.

- Finish importing and verify your backups. Treat every unimported capture as disposable once you continue.
- Open the glasses’ device controls in the Meta AI app. Choose the factory-reset command provided for your model and current app version. If the label or location differs, use the current Ray-Ban Meta device instructions rather than guessing a button sequence.
- Read the confirmation carefully. Confirm only when you understand that captures remaining on the glasses will be permanently erased and the Meta-account association will be removed.
- Let the reset complete without interrupting power. Keep the glasses in their case or on a stable surface until the app or the glasses indicate completion.
- Verify the handoff state. The glasses should no longer be associated with your account, and a new owner should have to pair them with their own account.
A reset removes files that are still on the glasses. It does not reach backward into copies already imported to your phone, uploaded to a cloud-photo library, posted online, attached to a message, or copied to another computer. Manage those destinations separately.
A force restart is not deletion
A force restart can be useful when the glasses will not connect, the app is stuck, or a transfer appears frozen. The official FAQ specifically says that a force restart does not delete on-glasses media. Use it as a troubleshooting action only; it is not a privacy wipe and should never substitute for a factory reset before handoff.

Delete imported and shared copies separately
After importing, make a destination-by-destination inventory. The same recording may exist in several places under different filenames or resolutions.
Phone gallery
Delete the file from the phone’s photo application, then check its recently deleted or trash area. If the phone keeps deleted items for a retention period, empty that area when you are certain the file is no longer needed. The exact labels and retention period depend on the phone and photo application.
Cloud-photo library
Open the cloud-photo service directly and search for the imported date, filename, or visual thumbnail. Confirm whether deleting from the phone also deletes the cloud item or merely removes a local copy. Because synchronization rules vary, follow that service’s own deletion and trash controls instead of assuming that one action removes both copies.

Social networks, chats, and email
Review every place where you shared the capture. Remove a post, message attachment, or email from the relevant service, and remember that recipients may have downloaded or screenshotted it. A sender-side deletion cannot guarantee that another person no longer has a copy.
Computers and backups
If you transferred files by cable, AirDrop-style sharing, desktop import, or backup software, search those locations too. Remove duplicates from ordinary folders, synchronized drives, and backup sets according to the retention controls of each product. Do not delete a backup blindly if it contains other data you need; use the product’s file-level removal option where available.
Secure privacy settings before and after importing
The Meta AI app provides controls for capture behavior, voice, notifications, and information sharing. Review those settings before handing the glasses to someone else and whenever you want to reduce future exposure.
Voice recordings
Meta states that voice recordings can be deleted. Look for the voice-recording history or deletion control in the current app version, select the recordings you do not want retained, and confirm the deletion. Menu names and retention behavior can vary by app version and region, so read the confirmation text rather than assuming that deleting a conversation also deletes every associated recording.
Notifications and information sharing
Review notification permissions and information-sharing preferences in the Meta AI app. Disable access you do not need, especially on a device that will be used around other people. These settings govern app behavior and data sharing; they do not replace the factory reset required to erase captures left on the glasses.

Cloud-media controls
Cloud-media menus and retention options may differ by region and app release. If the app offers a media-management or history screen, inspect it for stored items and deletion controls. The available documentation does not establish one retention period that applies to every account, so do not promise that a recording disappears after a fixed number of days.
How the capture light protects bystanders
Ray-Ban Meta glasses use a front capture LED to signal when a photo or video is being captured. Meta’s AI-glasses FAQ says: “The capture LED has no off switch.” Meta also explains: “We have features in place that will prohibit you from taking a photo or video if the light is covered.” Detected tampering can disable the camera.
Do not cover the LED with tape, paint, a sticker, or an accessory, and do not drill, remove, or alter the housing. Such modifications can block a visible privacy signal and trigger the glasses’ anti-tampering behavior. They can also damage the device. If the indicator is obstructed, remove the obstruction and restart the normal capture workflow; do not try to defeat the safeguard.
What to do when you do not want to record
- Leave the camera idle and avoid pressing the capture control.
- Keep the front indicator visible to people nearby.
- Use the app’s capture and notification settings to reduce accidental activation where those controls are available.
- In sensitive situations, remove the glasses or power them down according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Tell people when recording is intentional and respect applicable workplace, venue, and local privacy requirements.
Prepare glasses for sale, gifting, or recycling
Use this sequence whenever the glasses leave your possession:

- Import every capture you are allowed and intend to keep.
- Open several files to confirm that the phone copies are complete.
- Check cloud-photo libraries, shared albums, messages, social posts, computers, and backups for additional copies.
- Delete copies from each destination where you no longer want them, including trash or recently deleted areas where appropriate.
- Review voice recordings and information-sharing settings in the Meta AI app.
- Perform the factory reset and wait for it to finish.
- Confirm that your Meta-account association has been removed and that the glasses require a new owner’s pairing.
- Remove personal accessories or labels, clean the exterior without blocking the capture LED, and include only the accessories you intend to transfer.
The reset is the handoff boundary: before it, you are responsible for importing and checking data; after it, the device should contain no captures left from your use and should no longer be linked to your account. Copies you deliberately left in external services remain governed by those services.

Troubleshooting common privacy and deletion problems
The app cannot import photos or videos
- Keep the glasses and phone close, charged, and awake.
- Confirm that the glasses are paired in the Meta AI app.
- On iOS, accept the temporary glasses Wi-Fi prompt and return to the app after the network change.
- Retry a small selection first; a single damaged or unusually large file can stall a batch.
- Use a force restart only to recover the connection, then start the import again. Remember that the restart does not erase media.
You reset before importing
The factory reset is described as permanently erasing captures remaining on the glasses. If you did not create a phone or other backup first, do not assume the files can be recovered. Check every destination where you may have previously shared or synchronized them, but treat unimported, unsaved captures as unavailable after the reset.
The camera will not capture after cleaning or fitting an accessory
Inspect the front capture LED area for tape, dirt, a sticker, or an accessory that blocks the indicator. Meta says covered or tampered indicators can prohibit capture or disable the camera. Remove the obstruction and test normally; do not modify the hardware.
A phone copy was deleted but the file still appears online
That is expected when the online service has its own copy or synchronization policy. Open the service that still shows the item, remove it there, and check its trash or recently deleted area. Repeat this audit for every service to which you shared the file.
What to verify on other smart-glasses models
The Ray-Ban Meta workflow is not proof that every smart-glasses platform behaves identically. Before buying, deploying, or handing off another model, look for explicit answers to these questions in its current documentation:

Ask the manufacturer for a precise answer when documentation is silent. Do not infer that a force restart, app uninstall, Bluetooth unpairing, or phone-gallery deletion wipes recordings from the glasses.
A practical privacy routine for everyday use
For regular use, separate capture, import, sharing, and deletion into deliberate stages:
- Capture visibly: keep the LED unobstructed and avoid recording in situations where people have not been informed.
- Import selectively: move only the files you need to the phone, rather than creating unnecessary copies.
- Review immediately: check the phone gallery and remove accidental captures before they are synchronized or shared.
- Share intentionally: identify every recipient and platform before sending a file.
- Delete at the source: when a file should disappear, remove it from the glasses through a reset when appropriate, then remove phone, cloud, social, and backup copies separately.
- Reset for handoff: never rely on unpairing or restarting when selling, gifting, or recycling the glasses.
This routine avoids the two most serious errors: assuming import deletes the original and assuming a phone deletion reaches every copy.
