To remove or replace a smart chip in Google Docs, select the chip as an ordinary document character and then use the editor’s normal Delete, Backspace, or typing behavior. Google’s published help explains how to insert chips, select one with a screen reader, and edit date-chip values and formats, but it does not document a dedicated, universal “remove chip” or “convert to plain text” command. Treat replacement by typing as normal editor behavior, check the result in the current Docs interface, and use Undo immediately if surrounding text changes.
What a smart chip is—and what “remove” can mean
A smart chip is an interactive element embedded in a Google Docs document. Depending on the chip type, it can represent a person, file, date, Calendar event, or place. A chip appears inline with text but is not just ordinary characters: selecting or activating it can open a popup with information and actions.
There are two different tasks that readers often call “removing” a chip:
- Editing the chip: changing the value of a date chip or changing its display format while keeping it interactive.
- Replacing the chip: deleting the interactive element and putting ordinary text or another document element in its place.
Google’s computer and Android help pages document the first task for date chips. They do not publish a single removal or conversion procedure that applies to every chip type. People, file, event, place, and date chips may therefore behave differently when selected or edited.

Remove a smart chip on a computer
Before you edit
- Make a safety copy if the document matters. Use File > Make a copy or work in a duplicate document. This gives you a recovery point if the selection includes adjacent words, spaces, or punctuation.
- Close any chip popup. Click in the document body outside the popup so you are editing the document rather than an option in the chip’s card.
- Zoom in if necessary. A chip can be small, and placing the insertion point at its edge is easier when the document is enlarged in the browser.
Select the chip as a document character
With a mouse or trackpad, click immediately before or after the chip and use the arrow keys to position the insertion point at its boundary. The exact highlight can vary with the current Docs editor and browser. If the selection also highlights a neighboring space or letter, stop and undo rather than deleting immediately.
Google’s screen-reader instructions provide a more precise selection method: move the cursor to the beginning of the chip and press Shift+Right Arrow. The guide describes this as selecting the character that represents the chip, after which the chip popup can be opened for available actions. That documentation does not say that typing over the selected character converts it to plain text, so regard the next step as normal text-editor behavior rather than an official chip command.
Delete the selected chip
- Confirm that the highlight covers the chip and not a paragraph of surrounding text.
- Press Backspace or Delete once.
- Check the line immediately before and after the former chip. Make sure punctuation, spaces, and neighboring words remain intact.
- If the wrong content disappeared, press Ctrl+Z on Windows or ChromeOS, or Command+Z on macOS, and try again with a narrower selection.
These keys are the editor’s ordinary character-deletion behavior. Google’s cited computer help does not promise that every chip type responds identically, so confirm the result rather than assuming that a successful deletion on one chip proves a universal rule.

Replace a smart chip with plain text
Type over a selected chip
- Select only the chip. For screen-reader users, place the cursor at the chip’s beginning and press Shift+Right Arrow, as described in Google’s accessibility guidance.
- Type the replacement text, such as
Project kickoff,15 October 2026, or a person’s name. - Click elsewhere in the document and inspect the result. Plain text should behave like surrounding words rather than opening a chip popup.
- Undo immediately if typing inserts text beside the chip, changes adjacent content, or leaves the chip active. Reselect the chip and use the normal deletion step first, then type the replacement text.
Google does not describe typing over a selected chip as a supported conversion feature. The procedure above relies on ordinary editor selection and typing, so its result can depend on the chip type, selection accuracy, browser, and current Docs interface.

A safer two-stage replacement
When preserving the exact wording matters, first type the desired plain text in a nearby location or in a temporary duplicate document. Compare spelling, date order, punctuation, and capitalization with the chip’s visible label. Then remove the chip and insert the prepared text at the same location. This avoids trying to remember a long file name, event title, or date while the chip is selected.
Replacing with another smart chip
To use a different interactive element, remove the old chip only after you have the replacement ready. In Google Docs on a computer, type @ or choose Insert > Smart chips, narrow the suggestions, and select the new chip. Google lists people, files, dates, Calendar events, and places among the available chip types. Inserting a new chip does not automatically preserve the old chip’s value or permissions; enter or choose the replacement explicitly.
Edit a date chip instead of removing it
If the problem is an incorrect date or an inconvenient display, conversion to plain text may be unnecessary. Date chips have their own documented editing controls.
On a computer
- Click the date chip to open its controls.
- Click the date text field and enter the correct date.
- Use Settings in the chip controls to change the date format, if needed.
- Click back in the document and verify both the date value and its presentation.
Changing the date value or format keeps the element a date chip. It does not remove the interactive behavior or turn the displayed date into ordinary text.

With a screen reader
Google’s screen-reader guidance describes a popup date picker and a date-format menu for date chips. Use those controls to choose the date and format rather than trying to overwrite the chip with text. The same guidance documents selecting a chip character with Shift+Right Arrow, but it does not state that typing after that selection performs a universal conversion.
On Android
- Open the document in the Google Docs app.
- Tap the date chip.
- Choose the chip’s edit control.
- Change the date and confirm the result in the document.
Google’s Android instructions cover inserting chips in the Docs app and editing a date through the chip’s edit control. They do not provide a general remove-or-replace procedure. Do not assume that a computer keyboard sequence works the same way on a phone or tablet.
Chip-specific differences
People chips
A people chip identifies a person in the document. It is not, by itself, a sharing action: Google notes that a people chip does not grant the mentioned person access to the document. If you replace or delete the chip, document permissions remain a separate setting under the document’s sharing controls.
File chips
A file chip points readers toward a file. Removing the chip removes that in-document reference, not the underlying file. Before deleting it, record the file name or location if readers may still need access through another link or sentence.

Calendar-event chips
An event chip represents a Calendar event. Deleting the chip removes the reference from the document; it should not be treated as deleting the event itself. If the event details are important, write the date, time, and title as ordinary text before removing the chip.
Place chips
A place chip provides a location reference. If you replace it with text, include enough detail for readers to identify the place, because ordinary text will not retain the chip’s interactive location behavior.
Date chips
Date chips are the only type in the cited help with explicit value-and-format editing instructions on computer and an edit control documented for Android. Use those controls when you want to correct or restyle a date rather than remove the chip.

When deletion appears not to work
The chip popup opens instead of selecting the chip
Click outside the popup, then place the insertion point at the chip’s left or right edge. If you use a screen reader, follow the documented character-selection sequence: move to the beginning and press Shift+Right Arrow. Do not choose a popup action unless you intend to edit the chip or open its linked content.

Backspace removes a nearby letter or space
Undo immediately. Move the insertion point one character at a time until the chip itself is selected. A visible gap around a chip may be a normal document space, so check whether the highlight includes that space before pressing Delete.
Typing leaves the chip in place
Undo, select the chip again, and delete it as a separate step before entering replacement text. Because Google does not document a universal chip-to-text conversion, do not keep typing if the chip remains interactive or surrounding text changes.
The date looks wrong after editing
Open the date chip again and check both the date field and Settings format. A changed format can make the same date appear in a different order or style. Verify the underlying day, month, and year rather than judging only by the visual layout.
The Android app has different controls
Use the controls shown after tapping the chip in the app. Computer instructions and keyboard behavior do not automatically transfer to Android, and Google’s Android page does not document a general deletion or replacement command.
How to verify that the chip is really gone
- Click the former chip location. Plain text should not open a chip card.
- Use the arrow keys to move through the line and confirm that the text behaves like neighboring characters.
- Reopen the document or view it in another supported Docs client to ensure the change was saved.
- Check nearby punctuation, spaces, links, and line breaks, especially if the chip was at the start or end of a sentence.
- If the chip represented a file, event, place, or person, confirm that any information readers still need appears elsewhere in the document.
What Google’s documentation does and does not establish
Google’s computer help establishes how to insert smart chips with @ or Insert > Smart chips and identifies supported categories including people, files, dates, events, and places. Its accessibility help establishes that a chip can be selected as a character with Shift+Right Arrow when the cursor is at the chip’s beginning and explains how to open the chip popup. The date instructions establish editing a date value and format, and the Android instructions establish date editing through the app’s edit control.
Those pages do not state a dedicated, chip-wide Remove command, nor do they promise that typing over a selected chip converts it to plain text. That distinction matters: deleting or replacing a chip may work through ordinary document editing, but it should be checked in the current Docs interface and treated as editor behavior rather than a guaranteed chip feature.
