On a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, touch and hold an app in the Apps screen. Choose Uninstall when it is offered. If the app is preinstalled and cannot be uninstalled, open Settings > Apps and use Disable when available. If neither control appears, hide the app from the Home and Apps screens. Which choices you see depends on the Galaxy model, One UI/software version, carrier and region.
Uninstall, disable or hide: choose the right action
Samsung does not give every app the same controls. The useful distinction is whether the app is removed, kept but stopped, or merely taken out of view.
| Action | What happens | Storage result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall | The app is removed from the device. | Samsung says uninstalling frees storage. | Use it when Uninstall is available and you no longer need the app. |
| Disable | The app remains installed, is prevented from everyday use and is removed from the Apps screen. | The app’s files remain on the device; disabling is not a storage-freeing operation. | Use it for a preinstalled app that cannot be uninstalled but offers Disable. |
| Hide | The app is removed from the Home and Apps screens but is not uninstalled. | No storage is freed. | Use it when you only want the icon out of sight or when removal controls are unavailable. |
Samsung’s US app-management guide, UK guidance and Canada guide all note that available actions vary by app and device. A preinstalled app is therefore not automatically removable or disableable.

Check the app before changing anything
Identify whether it is essential
Do not disable an unfamiliar system component simply because its name looks technical. Samsung’s UK support page, updated 26 May 2026, says some pre-installed apps can be deleted, while essential apps such as Phone, Messages, Contacts, Gallery and My Files cannot be deleted because they are required for basic device functions. Your model may have a different set of protected apps, but the principle is the same: use only controls Samsung exposes for that specific app.

Expect different menus
Galaxy phones and tablets use different One UI releases, screen sizes and carrier software. Samsung warns that labels, menu locations and available buttons can change by model and software or app version; Samsung US also notes carrier variation. The instructions below use current, common labels. If a button is absent, do not assume it is hidden somewhere else or that a forced-removal method is safe.
Decide whether you need storage or only a cleaner screen
If your goal is storage, look for Uninstall. If you only want an icon gone, Hide is the least disruptive choice. Disable sits between those options: it takes the app out of everyday use while leaving it installed so it can be enabled later.
How to uninstall a Samsung app
This is the normal route for apps Samsung allows you to remove.
- From the Home screen, swipe up or down to open the Apps screen.
- Touch and hold the app you no longer want.
- Tap Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal if Samsung displays a confirmation prompt.
After confirmation, the app should disappear from the Apps screen. Samsung describes this action as removing the app and freeing storage. It does not mean that every related account, cloud service or subscription is cancelled; those are separate services managed in their own settings.
If Uninstall is not in the icon menu
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the app by name.
- Look for the available action at the app-information screen. If Uninstall is offered, tap it and confirm.
Samsung’s US instructions specifically direct users to the app-information screen when the Apps-screen menu does not show the expected control. If the app page has no uninstall control, it is protected on that device or supplied as part of the system software. Continue with the disable or hide options rather than attempting to remove system files.
What uninstalling can require afterward
An app removed this way can be installed again from Google Play or Galaxy Store. Samsung notes that a reinstalled app may require you to sign in again or reconfigure its settings. Keep that in mind before removing an app whose preferences or offline data you may need later.
How to disable a preinstalled app
Disable is intended for an embedded app that cannot be deleted but is not needed in your day-to-day use.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the preinstalled app.
- Tap Disable, then confirm when prompted.
Samsung Canada describes the result precisely: “Disabling prevents an app from running and removes it from the Apps screen, but the app remains installed on the device.” In practical terms, the icon is no longer part of your normal app list, while the installed files remain available for a later Enable action. Samsung also states that not all preinstalled apps can be disabled, so a missing button is an app-specific restriction rather than a fault with your phone.
When Disable is safer than uninstalling
Use this option when Samsung offers it for a preloaded app and you are confident that you do not need functions associated with that app. Because the app stays installed, disabling avoids the permanent removal step and gives you a straightforward recovery path. Do not treat the button as a guarantee that every other feature will continue to work: an app may be connected to a Samsung service or another system feature, so disable only apps you recognize.
If the app starts appearing again
Check the same Settings > Apps page. A system update, a carrier configuration change or a reset can alter which apps are present and which controls are offered. If Disable is no longer available, use the controls currently shown for that model and software version rather than relying on an older menu path.
How to hide an app you cannot remove
Hiding changes visibility, not installation. Samsung’s UK interface documents the following path:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open the Apps screen.
- Open the Apps-screen menu. Depending on the interface, this is a menu button or the three-dot menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Tap Hide apps on Home and Apps screens.
- Select the app you want to hide, then tap Done.
The app should no longer have an icon on either the Home screen or the Apps screen. It has not been uninstalled and it has not been disabled, so hiding does not stop it from being installed or change its storage use. Samsung documents hiding for preinstalled apps in that guide, but the exact menu and eligibility can differ on another Galaxy model.
Show a hidden app again
- Return to the Apps screen.
- Open its menu and choose Settings.
- Open Hide apps on Home and Apps screens.
- Remove the app from the hidden-app list and tap Done.
The icon should return to the Apps screen. If you cannot find the setting, use the Settings search field for “hide apps”; Samsung’s labels vary across software versions.
How to get a disabled or uninstalled app back
Re-enable a disabled app
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select the disabled app. You may need to use the filter or sort controls to include disabled apps.
- Tap Enable.
The app becomes available again and can return to the Apps screen. Samsung’s support instructions use this same app-information route for restoring a disabled app.

Reinstall an app you uninstalled
- Open Google Play or the Galaxy Store, depending on where the app was originally distributed.
- Search for the app by its exact name.
- Tap Install and complete any sign-in or permission prompts.
- Open the app and restore its settings if required.
Samsung warns that reinstalling can require a fresh sign-in or reconfiguration. If the app does not appear in the store, it may be restricted to a particular region, device, carrier build or account; check the app’s listing and your Galaxy software before assuming it has been permanently lost.
Why you cannot uninstall or disable an app
The app is an essential system component
Some apps are required for basic functions and have no removal control. Samsung’s examples include Phone, Messages, Contacts, Gallery and My Files on the UK guidance page. Your device may protect additional components. In this case, the absence of Uninstall or Disable is expected.
The app is preinstalled but only hideable
A manufacturer or carrier app can remain installed while Samsung allows its icon to be hidden. Use the hide path instead of looking for an unsupported removal command. This keeps the change reversible and avoids modifying system software.
The control is in a different place
Try both the long-press menu on the Apps screen and Settings > Apps > [app]. One interface may expose an action that the other does not. If neither page shows the action, the restriction applies to that app on that device.
The device is managed
A work, school or carrier policy can limit app changes. If the phone or tablet is managed, follow the administrator’s policy or contact the organization; do not attempt to bypass it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You are looking at a shortcut, not the installed app
Home-screen shortcuts and widgets can have different long-press menus. Open the Apps screen and select the actual app icon, or locate the app through Settings > Apps before deciding that Samsung has removed the control.
A practical decision guide
Choose Uninstall when all of these are true
- The app-information page or long-press menu offers Uninstall.
- You do not need the app’s local configuration or offline content.
- You want the app removed and Samsung’s stated storage benefit.
Choose Disable when all of these are true
- The app is preinstalled and Uninstall is unavailable.
- Disable is offered for that app.
- You want it out of everyday use but prefer to keep the installed files for possible restoration.
Choose Hide when all of these are true
- You mainly want a cleaner Home or Apps screen.
- Removal controls are unavailable or you are not ready to change the app’s operation.
- Your software exposes Hide apps on Home and Apps screens.
These choices are per app, not a single Galaxy-wide setting. You can uninstall one app, disable another and hide a third on the same device.

What changes after each action
Apps screen and search
An uninstalled app no longer appears because it is gone. A disabled app is removed from the Apps screen while it remains installed. A hidden app is removed from the Home and Apps screens by a visibility setting. If you still see a shortcut after uninstalling or disabling, remove that shortcut separately from the Home screen.
Storage
Only uninstalling removes the app and, according to Samsung’s Canada guidance, frees storage. Disabling and hiding leave the installation in place. Do not expect either of those actions to reclaim the same space.
Accounts and settings
Uninstalling may mean that a later installation requires a new sign-in or setup. Re-enabling a disabled app restores access to the installed app; hiding and unhiding change its visibility. Samsung’s instructions do not establish a universal speed or battery-life improvement from any of these actions, so treat them as app-management and decluttering tools rather than performance guarantees.
Examples of choosing the least disruptive option
Suppose a downloaded app shows Uninstall when you touch and hold it. If you no longer need it and want its storage back, uninstalling is the direct choice. If a preinstalled app shows no Uninstall button but does show Disable in Settings > Apps, disabling removes it from everyday use while keeping the installation available for an eventual Enable action.
If an app has neither control, hiding may solve a clutter problem without changing the app’s installed state. The hidden app remains installed and does not free space, but its icon leaves both the Home and Apps screens. For a protected essential app such as Phone, Messages, Contacts, Gallery or My Files, leave it enabled and visible because Samsung identifies these as required for basic device functions.
These examples illustrate why there is no universal “remove all Samsung apps” switch. The correct action is selected one app at a time, based on the controls Samsung exposes on that particular Galaxy phone or tablet.

Troubleshooting when the instructions do not match
- Search both locations. Check the app’s long-press menu in the Apps screen and its page under Settings > Apps. Samsung may show an action in one location but not the other.
- Check the exact app name. A shortcut or widget on the Home screen is not the same as the installed app entry. Use the Apps screen or Settings to select the actual app.
- Use current labels. Menu names and screen layouts vary by model, software or app version, carrier and region. A guide written for another Galaxy release may use a different path.
- Do not force the change. When Samsung does not show Uninstall or Disable, use Hide apps on Home and Apps screens if available instead of attempting to alter system files.
- Look for the recovery control. A disabled app should have Enable on its app-information page. A hidden app can be removed from the hidden list. An uninstalled app must be installed again from Google Play or Galaxy Store.
If a work, school or carrier policy manages the device, that policy can limit what you are allowed to change. Follow the administrator’s instructions rather than trying to bypass the restriction.

Use the current Samsung instructions for your model
For a model-specific check, compare the controls shown on your device with Samsung’s current support pages: Manage apps on your Galaxy phone or tablet, How to delete pre-installed apps on your Samsung Galaxy device (updated 26 May 2026), and Manage apps on your Samsung Galaxy. These pages describe the same core actions but also show why a menu path or button can differ by country, carrier, model and software release.
Final safety checklist
- Open the Apps screen or Settings > Apps so you are changing the installed app, not just a shortcut.
- Read the app name and select only one you recognize.
- Use Uninstall only when Samsung offers it and you no longer need the app.
- Use Disable only when Samsung offers it for a preinstalled app.
- Use Hide apps on Home and Apps screens when visibility, rather than installation, is the problem.
- Remember that essential apps may be protected and that controls differ across Galaxy devices.
- If you change your mind, use Enable, unhide the app, or reinstall it from Google Play or Galaxy Store.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remove Samsung apps I don’t use?
Open the Apps screen, touch and hold the app, and tap Uninstall if Samsung offers it. You can also check Settings > Apps > [app]. If Uninstall is unavailable, try Disable or Hide, depending on the controls shown for that app.
How do I disable preinstalled apps on my Samsung Galaxy?
Open Settings > Apps, select the preinstalled app, tap Disable, and confirm. Not every preinstalled app can be disabled, and a disabled app remains installed while disappearing from the Apps screen.
Why can’t I uninstall an app on my Samsung phone?
The app may be an essential system component, a protected preinstalled app, or subject to device-management restrictions. Samsung identifies Phone, Messages, Contacts, Gallery and My Files as examples of essential apps that cannot be deleted on its UK guidance. If no Uninstall or Disable button appears, use Hide when available.
Does disabling a Samsung app free storage?
No. Samsung distinguishes disabling from uninstalling: disabling leaves the app and its files installed, while uninstalling removes the app and frees storage.
What is the difference between hiding and disabling an app?
Hiding removes the icon from the Home and Apps screens but leaves the app installed and does not stop it from operating. Disabling leaves it installed, prevents everyday use and removes it from the Apps screen.
How do I get a disabled app back?
Go to Settings > Apps, select the disabled app and tap Enable. You may need to include disabled apps with the page’s filter or sort controls.

Open Google Play or Galaxy Store, search for the app, tap Install, and complete any sign-in or setup prompts. Samsung notes that reinstalling may require signing in again or reconfiguring settings.
Why do Samsung app steps look different on my phone?
Samsung says menu labels, screen layouts and available controls vary by model, software or app version, carrier and region. Check both the Apps-screen long-press menu and Settings > Apps, and use the controls currently shown on your device.
The Bottom Line
Use Uninstall to remove an app and free storage, Disable to keep a preinstalled app installed but out of everyday use, and Hide when you only need its icons gone. Because controls vary by app, Galaxy model, software version, carrier and region, follow the option Samsung actually shows and use Enable, unhide, or reinstall if you change your mind.
