The right way to change information Amazon holds depends on what you want removed. Edit the account, profile, seller, author, device, browsing-history or recommendation setting when you need a limited correction. Use Data Privacy Queries for a formal access or deletion request when applicable law gives you that right. Use Amazon’s Alexa Privacy controls for voice activity. Close the entire account only if you are prepared to lose access to linked services and accept that some records may still be retained.
These routes are not interchangeable. Removing one browsing item does not erase order records, and closing an account is much broader than correcting a phone number.
First identify which Amazon data you want to change
Amazon’s Privacy Notice covers information used across its stores, applications, devices and services. Before choosing a control, identify both the data and the account or service that owns it. A person may have more than one Amazon account if they used different email addresses or phone numbers, so check every account that could contain the information.

Account and contact details
Names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and similar profile fields normally belong to the account settings. If one value is wrong and you want to keep using Amazon, edit that field in the relevant signed-in account rather than requesting closure.

Orders, invoices and other transaction records
Order records are a separate category from editable profile information. Removing a profile address does not remove past orders or invoices. Amazon says some records may have to be retained for legal, tax, accounting or fraud-prevention purposes, including order history.
Browsing history and recommendations
Amazon provides dedicated controls for browsing history and recommendations. Those controls can remove or change activity used to personalize what you see, but they are not the same as a formal request to delete all personal information.
Alexa activity
Voice recordings, transcripts and typed requests associated with Alexa have their own privacy controls. Treat Alexa activity separately from shopping history and account details.

If the information belongs to a seller, author, device or another Amazon service, use that service’s control. Amazon’s Privacy Notice specifically directs sellers to Seller Central and Seller Account Information, and authors to Author Portal and Author Central.
Choose the narrowest control that solves the problem

How to correct personal information on Amazon
- Sign in to the account that owns the information. If you have used multiple email addresses or phone numbers, check each possible account before concluding that a record is missing.
- Locate the service or profile field. Open the account or service settings and find the field that is inaccurate. For seller information, use Seller Central and Seller Account Information. For author information, use Author Portal or Author Central. For customer activity, use the dedicated browsing-history or recommendation control.
- Replace the value with the correct one. Enter the corrected name, address, phone number, email address or other field value, then complete any verification Amazon requests.
- Check where the old value still appears. A correction in one service may not change a separate seller, author, device or application record. Review the other account or service if the incorrect value remains visible there.
- Escalate only if the source setting cannot correct the record. Prepare a formal request through Data Privacy Queries when the information is inaccurate and no relevant setting is available, or when you need an access or deletion decision under applicable law.
What to include in a correction request
When a setting cannot solve the problem, describe the request precisely. State which field or record is inaccurate, the corrected value, the Amazon service or account involved, and the email address or phone number that identifies that account. Explain whether you are asking for correction, access, deletion or more than one of those outcomes. This detail helps distinguish a wrong address in a profile from an order record that Amazon may be required to retain.

How to delete Amazon browsing history or change recommendations
For a viewed product or other shopping activity, use Amazon’s dedicated Browsing History controls while signed in. Select the item-level removal or other options Amazon presents on that page. If you want to stop activity from being used for future personalization, use the recommendation controls rather than closing the account.
The exact controls can vary by marketplace, account state and interface. Look for the browsing-history and recommendation settings associated with the signed-in account, and verify that you are changing the same account in which the activity occurred.
What these controls do not do
- They do not erase order history or invoices.
- They do not necessarily remove information held in another Amazon service, device or account.
- They are not a formal request for access to or deletion of all personal information.
If your goal is a broad privacy decision rather than a personalization change, use Data Privacy Queries and describe the categories of information you want reviewed.
How to delete Alexa voice recordings and requests
Alexa activity has a separate control path. In the Alexa mobile app or on an Echo Show, open More > Alexa Privacy. Amazon also provides online Alexa privacy settings. From there, review and delete the voice recordings, transcripts and typed requests available to your account.
Before deleting Alexa data
- Removing activity can reduce personalization or affect features that rely on previous interactions.
- Amazon says deletion can take time because processing depends on the information and the systems involved.
- Deletion from Amazon’s cloud does not necessarily remove copies held by third parties or stored locally on another device.
- De-identified information that is no longer linked to you may not be deleted.
- If information helped improve services or train systems, those systems may continue to retain and use the resulting information after the underlying data is deleted from data stores.
Use Alexa Privacy for Alexa-specific activity. If you also want a decision about unrelated account information, make a separate, clearly described request through Data Privacy Queries.

How to submit a formal access or deletion request
Amazon’s Privacy Notice says: “In addition, to the extent required by applicable law, you may have the right to request access to or delete your personal information.” The named route for that type of request is Data Privacy Queries.
- List the account or accounts involved. Include the email addresses or phone numbers you may have used, without sending unnecessary information.
- Define the request. Say whether you want access, deletion, correction, or a combination. Identify categories such as profile data, browsing activity, Alexa requests or information tied to a particular service.
- Explain the location and context. Eligibility and available choices depend on your location, the applicable law and the type of data. State the marketplace or country associated with the account if the form asks for it.
- Complete identity verification. Amazon may need to verify that you control the account or are entitled to make the request.
- Keep the request confirmation. Save the case details and copies of what you submitted so you can clarify the scope if Amazon asks follow-up questions.
Do not assume a universal response time. The reviewed Amazon materials qualify the right by applicable law but do not establish one worldwide deadline for every request. A formal request also does not guarantee deletion of information that Amazon is permitted or required to retain.
When account closure is the right choice
Account closure is the broadest option. Use it when you intend to stop using the account and its linked Amazon services, not merely when one field or activity item is wrong.
Amazon’s closure procedure
- Sign in to the account you want to close.
- Review the associated products and services. Identify subscriptions, digital content, devices, seller or author activity and other services that depend on the account.
- Select the permanent account-closure and data-deletion option. Read the service list and consequences shown before submitting.
- Submit the closure request.
- Reply to Amazon’s confirmation email or text within five days. Amazon states that this verification step is required to complete the closure request.
Amazon says closure affects linked services across its global Amazon sites and cannot be restored. Download uploaded content and invoices before submitting if you may need them for support, returns, taxes or warranty purposes.
What account closure does not guarantee
Closing an account does not mean every copy of every record disappears immediately or permanently. Amazon’s customer-service guidance says it is legally required to retain some data, including order history, for purposes such as tax, accounting and fraud prevention. Retention is a reason to choose the narrowest remedy: closing an account cannot override those obligations.

Closure also differs from Alexa deletion. Alexa data can have third-party, local-copy, de-identification and trained-system limitations even when you use Alexa Privacy. Account closure is a global service decision; it is not a substitute for reviewing the specific Alexa controls before you close.

Closing the account to fix one detail
If a phone number, address or name is wrong, edit the owning setting first. Closure can remove access to services and content while leaving legally retained records unchanged.
Assuming a browsing-history removal erases orders
Activity controls affect browsing or recommendations. They do not erase order records, invoices or data stored in another service.
Using the wrong account
Different email addresses and phone numbers can create separate accounts. Sign out, verify the account identifier and repeat the check on other accounts you own.

Seller, author, device and application data may have separate settings. Use Seller Central, Seller Account Information, Author Portal, Author Central or the relevant device or service control instead of editing an unrelated customer profile.

Expecting immediate Alexa erasure
Amazon says secure deletion begins after a request, but completion depends on the information and systems involved. Allow for processing time and remember that copies outside Amazon’s cloud may remain.
Assuming legal rights are identical everywhere
Data Privacy Queries is qualified by applicable law. Location and the type of information determine whether access or deletion is available and what Amazon may retain.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you named the exact data: profile field, order record, browsing item, recommendation, Alexa request, seller record or author record?
- Do you know which email address, phone number, account or Amazon service owns it?
- Is there a dedicated setting that can solve the problem without a formal request?
- If you need access or broad deletion, have you described the categories and the applicable account in Data Privacy Queries?
- If you are considering closure, have you reviewed linked services and downloaded content and invoices?
- Are you prepared for irreversible loss of access and for legally required retention of some records?
What to expect after you submit a request
A setting change may take effect only in the service where you made it. A formal Data Privacy Queries request may require identity verification and a response based on local law. Alexa deletion may take time and can alter personalization. Account closure requires confirmation within five days and then affects linked services globally.

Submit a separate, specific request for the category that remains.
