If you copied a command from a fake CAPTCHA, browser error, security warning, or download page and ran it, treat the computer as potentially compromised. Disconnect it from wired, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth networks, then update your security software and run a full scan. Do not assume a clean scan proves that every persistence mechanism or stolen credential has been dealt with. Secure accounts from a separate, known-clean device and escalate to your employer’s security team or a qualified incident-response professional when alerts, remote access, or other symptoms continue.
What ClickFix is—and why removal is different for every victim
ClickFix is a social-engineering delivery method rather than one fixed virus. A malicious page creates a plausible problem—a fake CAPTCHA, failed update, urgent security notice, document error, or download instruction—and tells you to copy text into Windows Run, PowerShell, Command Prompt, a browser address bar, or macOS Terminal. The pasted command starts the infection chain.
Microsoft describes commands that use tools including PowerShell, mshta.exe, and curl.exe. Some payloads can execute in memory, while others create files or persistence. Reported outcomes include password and browser-information theft and remote control. Microsoft’s official entries explain that “Behavior:Win32/ClickFix is not a classic malware, but a name given to a sophisticated social engineering technique that aims to trick the targets into voluntarily initiating a chain of infection through manipulation.” Read the behavior entry and Trojan entry for Microsoft’s current indicators.

What a copied command may have done
The visible command is often only the first stage. It may download another script, launch a signed Windows utility, decode data in memory, create a scheduled task, or place a file in a user-writable directory. A command can also finish without showing an error or obvious window. That quiet result does not mean nothing happened.
ClickFix is a delivery technique, so two people who follow similar-looking prompts may receive different payloads. One campaign may install an information stealer; another may add a loader or remote-control tool. Microsoft has also documented commands that run largely in memory, leaving fewer obvious files for a basic scan to find. Conversely, a payload may create startup entries and downloaded components that remain after the first process exits.
Do not try to identify the malware solely from a filename, a browser pop-up, or the wording of the lure. Record the exact URL and command instead. The command, execution time, user account, and any security alert give an analyst better clues than a guess based on a name such as “update” or “Chrome.”

Do these things first
1. Isolate the computer
Disconnect Ethernet, turn off Wi-Fi, and disable Bluetooth. Do this before browsing for fixes or signing in to accounts on the suspected device. Isolation limits command-and-control traffic and data exfiltration. If the computer belongs to an employer, follow its incident-response procedure rather than improvising; some organizations need the device left powered on for forensic collection, while others instruct users to shut it down.
- Unplug the network cable.
- Use the operating system’s network controls to disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- Do not reconnect merely to download a scanner unless your security team directs you to do so.
- Use a different, trusted device for account changes and for downloading any recovery tools.
2. Record what happened
Write down the URL, the text of the command, the time it ran, what window displayed it, and any prompts or detections you saw. Photograph the screen if copying the command again would be unsafe. Do not paste the command into a search engine or run it a second time. These details help a security team identify the payload and determine whether credentials were exposed.
3. Do not “test” the infection
Avoid opening banking, email, password-manager, cryptocurrency, or work accounts on the affected computer. Do not delete random files, registry entries, browser data, or scheduled tasks before documenting them. Destructive cleanup can remove evidence without stopping the attacker.
Windows: update protection and run a full scan
Update definitions while following your isolation policy
On a personal computer, reconnect only long enough to obtain current antimalware definitions if your security software cannot update from an existing cache. Prefer a known-clean network and disconnect again before investigating. On an organization-managed computer, ask IT how updates should be obtained; the security team may supply an offline scanner or collect the machine centrally.

Run a full scan
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Install available protection and security-intelligence updates.
- Choose Scan options, select Full scan, and start the scan.
- Quarantine or remove detections using the actions presented by Windows Security.
- Restart if requested, then run another full scan after definitions have updated.
Microsoft says Defender can automatically remove detected threats, but remnants and system changes may remain. A completed scan is therefore a cleanup step, not proof that every payload, persistence method, or account exposure has been resolved. Preserve detection names, paths, and timestamps for later analysis.
Use an offline scan when recommended
If the scanner reports a rootkit, repeatedly finds the same item after reboot, or cannot complete because malware interferes with Windows, ask your security team whether an offline scan is appropriate. An offline scan runs outside the normal Windows session and can examine files before many malicious processes start. The exact availability and menu wording can vary by Windows edition and organizational policy; do not disable protection or alter boot settings without guidance.
Inspect Windows persistence without deleting legitimate components
Microsoft identifies several locations worth checking after a ClickFix execution:
- Registry Run and RunOnce keys.
- Task Scheduler entries.
- Unexpected files in
%TEMP%. - Unexpected executables and scripts in
%AppData%Roaming(also displayed asAppDataRoaming).
Threat reports have mentioned names such as ChromeUpdater, ScheduledDefrags, and client32.exe. These are examples from specific incidents, not a universal fingerprint. Legitimate software can use similar names, and an attacker can choose a completely different name. Never remove a registry value, scheduled task, or file solely because its name resembles an example.

Review startup entries
Open Task Manager and select Startup apps to note unfamiliar items, publishers, paths, and first-seen dates. For deeper review, an administrator or security professional can inspect the relevant Run and RunOnce keys in Registry Editor. Export a key before making any change so it can be restored, and verify the executable’s digital signature and path. If the entry belongs to a work device, stop and send the details to IT instead of editing the registry.
Review scheduled tasks
Open Task Scheduler and examine tasks created recently or configured to run at logon, startup, idle, or on a repeating timer. Check the Actions tab for PowerShell, mshta.exe, curl.exe, script interpreters, or executables in user-writable directories. Record the task name, trigger, action, author, and file path. Disable or delete a task only after confirming it is malicious; many Windows components and legitimate applications use scheduled tasks.
Check temporary and roaming-data locations
In File Explorer, enter %TEMP% and %AppData%Roaming in the address bar. Sort by date and look for recently created scripts, DLLs, executables, archives, and oddly named folders. Do not open suspicious files. Record hashes or copy samples only under the direction of a security professional, because handling a file can trigger it or destroy forensic context.

Protect accounts from a known-clean device
ClickFix payloads may steal browser information and passwords. Treat credentials that were typed, stored, autofilled, or available in the affected browser as potentially exposed, even if the scan removed a file. From a separate device you trust:
- Change the password for your primary email account first, because it can reset other accounts.
- Change passwords for financial, work, cloud-storage, social, and shopping accounts that were used or saved on the suspected computer.
- Enable multifactor authentication, preferably with a hardware security key or authenticator app where available.
- Review active sessions, recent sign-ins, recovery addresses, forwarding rules, app passwords, OAuth grants, and newly registered devices; revoke anything unfamiliar.
- Contact financial institutions or your organization’s security team immediately if payment data, business secrets, or regulated information may have been accessible.
Do not assume changing one password removes an attacker’s existing session. Account providers differ in how they invalidate cookies, tokens, app passwords, and refresh tokens; use each provider’s sign-out-everywhere or session-revocation controls when offered. The available evidence establishes a risk of credential theft, not which particular account was accessed in your case.
How to tell whether malware may still be present
No single symptom proves infection, and no single clean scan proves removal. Increase the level of response when you see several of these signs:
- Detections return after reboot or after you remove them.
- Unknown startup entries, scheduled tasks, services, or administrator accounts reappear.
- Security tools are disabled, settings change without permission, or scans terminate unexpectedly.
- Unexplained outbound connections, CPU or disk activity, pop-ups, browser extensions, or password-reset notices continue.
- Someone reports logins, email forwarding, file changes, or remote-control activity you did not perform.
Check your email and account-provider security pages from a clean device, not from the suspected computer. If the device is still showing symptoms after updated full scans, stop using it for sensitive work and obtain case-specific incident response. A professional can correlate detections, persistence, event logs, network telemetry, and account activity instead of relying on filename guesses.
Should you scan again, reset the computer, or get help?
A second full scan is reasonable after definitions update, especially when the first scan ran with stale signatures or removed a detected file. Repeated scans are not a substitute for investigation when alerts return or account activity looks abnormal. A professional response is more appropriate when you need confidence that the actual payload and persistence have been identified, rather than merely finding one suspicious file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA reset or operating-system reinstall can remove local components, but it cannot reverse password theft, invalidate every cloud session automatically, or recover data already copied by an attacker. Do not reset a work computer before IT preserves logs and evidence. On a personal device, obtain copies of important files only after considering whether they could contain executable content, and change exposed credentials from a clean device before reconnecting the rebuilt system.
There is no product comparison or guaranteed scanner that covers every ClickFix payload. The practical choice is between a carefully documented, self-guided response for a limited personal incident and professional incident response when uncertainty, persistence, sensitive data, or organizational obligations raise the stakes.

macOS ClickFix infections need a different procedure
Do not apply Windows registry or Task Scheduler instructions to a Mac. Microsoft has reported macOS ClickFix campaigns in which visitors are told to paste commands into Terminal. Those campaigns have delivered information stealers such as MacSync and Atomic Stealer (AMOS), with a server-side gate that selectively shows the malicious lure. A page that looks harmless for one visitor does not prove that its URL or infrastructure is safe for everyone. Microsoft documented more than 250 front-end domains in one tracked campaign cluster during its August 5, 2026 investigation; that count does not represent every ClickFix operation. See Microsoft’s investigation.
Malwarebytes’ report on Group-IB research describes a macOS ClickFix-delivered stealer with credential theft and a persistent backdoor. Group-IB researchers said the malware searches for browser credentials, password-manager data, crypto-wallet extensions, and desktop wallet files, and can employ a GSocket backdoor. Read the report at Malwarebytes’ coverage of ClickLock.

Immediate Mac actions
- Disconnect Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Bluetooth, and contact workplace IT if the Mac is managed.
- Record the command, URL, time, and any Terminal output without running the command again.
- From a clean device, change potentially exposed passwords and revoke active sessions.
- Use current, reputable macOS security software or Apple’s platform-specific guidance as directed by an incident responder.
- Have a professional inspect LaunchAgents, LaunchDaemons, login items, configuration profiles, shell startup files, and recently created applications when symptoms persist. These locations require careful interpretation; deleting an item without identifying its owner can break legitimate software without removing the backdoor.
A full Mac cleanup procedure cannot be inferred from the Windows-focused indicators above. If a stealer may have accessed wallet files, password managers, work credentials, or personal data, prioritize account containment and professional analysis over repeated casual scans.
When self-guided cleanup is not enough
Seek incident-response or malware-removal help when any of the following applies:
- The computer belongs to an employer, school, healthcare organization, or other managed environment.
- Detections or suspicious persistence return after reboot.
- You observe unknown remote access, new administrator accounts, or continuing data exfiltration.
- The command ran with administrator privileges or downloaded several components.
- Passwords, payment information, cryptocurrency wallets, customer data, or regulated records may have been accessible.
- You cannot identify what ran or cannot safely verify startup and scheduled-task changes.
For a managed computer, contact the security or IT team before resetting, reimaging, or deleting evidence. For a personal computer with continuing compromise, a professional can decide whether targeted eradication, credential recovery, or a complete rebuild is appropriate. A factory reset or operating-system reinstall may remove local malware, but it does not undo stolen credentials, active sessions, cloud persistence, or compromised accounts; the decision should follow containment and evidence preservation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How widespread is ClickFix?
Microsoft’s Digital Defense Report 2025 attributed 47% of initial-access methods in Microsoft Defender Experts notifications during the report’s preceding year to ClickFix. That is a share of those notifications, not a rate for all organizations or all cyberattacks. The figure nevertheless illustrates why a command copied from a seemingly routine webpage deserves the same caution as a suspicious attachment.

- Never paste a command into Run, PowerShell, Terminal, or a browser address bar merely because a webpage instructs you to “verify” that you are human or fix an error.
- Use the browser’s reload, back, and close controls instead of executing troubleshooting text supplied by an untrusted page.
- Keep the operating system, browser, and security software updated, and use standard user accounts for routine work where practical.
- Train staff to report the URL and screenshot the lure rather than following its instructions.
- Use multifactor authentication and unique passwords so a stolen browser credential is less useful to an attacker.
The decisive warning sign is behavioral: a legitimate CAPTCHA or browser error does not need you to copy an opaque command into a system shell. Treat that instruction as an attempted compromise, close the page, and report it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remove malware after running a command from a fake CAPTCHA?
Disconnect the computer from Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Record the URL and command, avoid signing in to accounts on that computer, update antimalware definitions according to your isolation policy, and run a full scan. Secure credentials from a known-clean device. If detections return, remote access continues, or sensitive data was available, obtain incident-response help.
I pasted a command into Windows Run. What should I do now?
Treat the machine as potentially compromised even if no window appeared. Isolate it, write down exactly what ran, and do not run the command again. Run updated Windows Security scans, then have a qualified person review Run keys, scheduled tasks, Temp, and AppDataRoaming. Do not delete an item just because it resembles an example such as ChromeUpdater or client32.exe.
Can a ClickFix attack steal my passwords?
Yes. Reported ClickFix payloads can steal browser information and passwords, and some macOS campaigns target password-manager data and cryptocurrency wallets. From a separate clean device, change potentially exposed passwords, enable multifactor authentication, review sign-ins and active sessions, and revoke unfamiliar access. A scan cannot tell you which account an attacker may already have used.
How do I know if ClickFix malware is still on my computer?
Warning signs include detections that return after reboot, recurring unknown startup entries or scheduled tasks, disabled security tools, unexplained outbound traffic, new administrator accounts, persistent pop-ups, or account alerts you did not initiate. No single symptom is conclusive, so continuing signs warrant professional analysis rather than repeated filename-based deletion.
What should I do if I ran a ClickFix command on my Mac?
Disconnect Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Bluetooth; record the Terminal command and URL; and use a clean device to protect accounts. Do not apply Windows registry or Task Scheduler instructions. Use platform-specific macOS security guidance, and seek professional inspection of login items, LaunchAgents, LaunchDaemons, profiles, shell startup files, and recently added applications if symptoms persist.
Will a factory reset remove ClickFix malware?
A reset or reinstall may remove local files, but it does not undo stolen passwords, active cloud sessions, copied wallet data, or account changes. Contain the device, preserve evidence when appropriate, secure accounts from a clean device, and ask IT or an incident responder whether rebuilding is necessary. Managed computers should not be reset without following the organization’s procedure.
The Bottom Line
ClickFix is a delivery technique, so removal depends on the payload and operating system. Isolate the device, run updated full scans, inspect Windows persistence carefully, secure credentials from a clean device, and use Mac-specific help for macOS incidents. A clean scan is useful evidence, not a guarantee; persistent symptoms, sensitive data, or a managed computer justify professional response.
