You can usually investigate and remove Android malware without immediately erasing your phone. Start with Google Play Protect, install Android and security updates, remove apps you do not trust, and use safe mode to identify an app that is causing the problem. Review your Google Account as well, because suspicious messages or account activity may continue even after a local app is removed.
A factory reset is a last resort. Google says it erases all data stored on the phone. Data already stored in your Google Account may be restored, but apps and their data are uninstalled. Before resetting, verify your backups and credentials instead of assuming that every photo, message, downloaded file, authenticator, or app state is included.
What counts as malware on Android?
Google defines malware as “unsafe or unwanted software that can steal your info or harm your device.” That definition includes more than a traditional computer-style virus. A malicious or abusive app, a compromised account, or software installed from outside the Google Play Store can all create symptoms that look like an infection.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Google lists these possible warning signs:
- Persistent pop-up advertisements that are difficult to close.
- Messages claiming that the phone is infected or needs an urgent repair.
- Unexpected slowness, crashes, or other malfunction.
- Browser redirects or settings that change without your permission.
- Messages sent to your contacts that you did not write.
These signs are prompts to investigate, not proof of malware. A poorly coded app, a browser notification permission, a failing update, or an account problem can produce similar behavior. An unsolicited “your phone is infected” alert may itself be misleading. Do not tap the alert’s buttons or install software it recommends; close the page or app and begin with the checks below.

Protect your data before cleanup
Most of the first-line steps are reversible, but a few minutes of preparation can prevent a second problem: losing access to your accounts while troubleshooting.
- Confirm that you know the Google Account email address and password used on the phone.
- Make sure you can unlock the device with its screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password.
- Check whether important photos, contacts, calendars, and other files are actually synchronized to an account or copied elsewhere. Do not assume that an app’s private data or every downloaded file is backed up.
- Note recently installed, sideloaded, or unfamiliar apps. This makes it easier to test removals one at a time.
- If contacts received messages you did not send, plan to review account security, not only the phone’s app list.
Do not factory-reset while you are still trying to identify the cause. A reset destroys local data and can make it harder to recover information that was never synchronized.
1. Run Google Play Protect
Play Protect is the safest first scan because it is built into Google Play. Google says Play Protect checks apps before download, scans apps from other sources, warns about harmful apps, and may remove some harmful apps. Google also states that “Google Play Protect helps keep Android devices safe and secure”; that is a description of its role, not a guarantee that every threat will be detected.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture or profile icon.
- Choose Play Protect.
- Review the status and start the available scan. The Play Protect section shows when the last scan occurred, and Google’s help documentation says users can initiate a full device scan.
- Keep app scanning enabled. If you install apps from outside Google Play, enable the improved harmful-app detection option when it is offered.
Read the result rather than treating a clean scan as a complete diagnosis. If the phone still redirects browsers, sends messages, or displays intrusive ads, continue with updates, app removal, and safe-mode testing. Do not install a second security app merely because Play Protect did not report a problem; the official guidance does not establish that a paid antivirus is required.
2. Install every available Android and security update
Updates can fix vulnerabilities and operating-system bugs that resemble malware. Check all three update areas instead of stopping after one screen:

- Android software update: Look in Settings for the system or software-update section and install the offered release.
- Security update: Check the security-update status and apply any available patch.
- Google Play system update: Install this separately when Android lists it as pending.
Exact labels and menu locations differ between Android releases and manufacturer software. If you cannot find a setting, use the Settings search field for “update” or consult the phone maker’s current instructions. Keep the phone connected to power when an update is large, and restart when Android requests it. Recheck the original symptom after the restart before deleting more apps.
3. Remove apps you do not trust
Google recommends uninstalling apps that are unnecessary, untrusted, or obtained outside Google Play. Begin with apps installed shortly before the problem started, apps you do not recognize, and sideloaded apps whose publisher or download source you cannot verify. Do not remove a system component simply because its name is unfamiliar; if you are unsure, identify the app through the manufacturer’s support information first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings and go to the installed-apps or app-management list. The wording varies by phone.
- Sort or review the list by recently installed apps if that option is available.
- Open the candidate app’s information page and choose Uninstall.
- Restart the phone normally and test the behavior.
- Repeat with the next recent or untrusted app only if the symptom remains.
Removing one app at a time preserves a useful cause-and-effect record. If an app refuses to uninstall, the phone becomes unusable while you try, or the symptom returns immediately, stop guessing and use safe mode.
4. Use safe mode to identify a downloaded app
Safe mode starts Android with downloaded apps disabled. Google’s Android help says that if the problem disappears in safe mode, a downloaded app is likely responsible. Safe mode is therefore a diagnostic step, not a permanent cleaning mode.
The button sequence for entering safe mode varies by manufacturer and model. Use the maker’s instructions for your exact phone rather than applying a universal key combination. Once the phone shows that it is in safe mode:

- Use the phone long enough to check the symptom that led you to suspect malware.
- If the pop-ups, redirects, crashes, or other behavior stop, identify recently installed apps as the leading suspects.
- Uninstall the most recent suspect app.
- Restart normally.
- Test again. If the symptom persists, repeat with the next suspect app.
If the behavior continues in safe mode, a downloaded app is less likely to be the sole cause. Continue with account-security checks and manufacturer support rather than deleting random system apps. Leaving safe mode normally requires an ordinary restart; the manufacturer’s instructions take precedence if the phone behaves differently.
5. Review your Google Account security
Malware cleanup is incomplete if someone can still use your account. Google specifically recommends an account-security review, especially when contacts received messages you did not send or you see activity you do not recognize.
- Open your Google Account settings and start Security Checkup.
- Review recent security events and the devices or sessions associated with the account.
- Address alerts about an unfamiliar sign-in, recovery detail, or third-party access.
- Change the password if the account may have been exposed, then use the account’s security controls to end sessions you do not recognize.
- Check messaging and email activity again after securing the account.
A suspicious message can originate from an account even after the offending phone app is gone. Conversely, a clean account does not prove that every local app is safe. Treat handset cleanup and account protection as two related but separate tasks.
6. Escalate when symptoms persist
Contact the phone manufacturer or carrier support when you cannot remove an app, cannot enter safe mode, cannot identify a setting, or the symptoms continue after Play Protect, updates, and app removal. Device-specific instructions matter because Android menu names, safe-mode procedures, and reset paths differ.
When requesting help, record the model, Android version, the first date the symptom appeared, recently installed apps, and what happened in safe mode. Do not give a support agent your Google password or a one-time verification code. If the phone displays an emergency payment demand or you suspect financial-account theft, use a separate trusted device to contact the relevant service.

When a factory reset is justified
Google lists resetting the device as an escalation option when malware signs remain, but a reset should follow the reversible steps above. It can remove persistent software, yet it is not a way to preserve everything.
What a reset deletes
Google states that a factory reset erases all data on the phone. Apps and their data are uninstalled. Information already stored in your Google Account can be restored during setup, but the reset page does not promise that every category of data is backed up. App-specific files, offline downloads, local messages, authenticator credentials, and game or work data may require separate backup procedures.
Pre-reset checklist
- Verify the latest backup status for each important data category instead of relying on an assumption that synchronization is complete.
- Copy irreplaceable photos, videos, documents, and downloads to a trusted destination.
- Confirm that you know the Google Account and password previously used on the phone.
- Confirm the screen-lock credential.
- Check how authenticator apps, passkeys, banking apps, and work profiles will be recovered.
- Save manufacturer-specific recovery instructions before erasing the device.
Google’s current reset guidance says to wait 24 hours after changing a Google Account password before performing a factory reset. This helps avoid account-verification problems during setup.
How to reset and set up again
Use the reset path supplied for your exact model; the menu and button procedure are not universal. Charge the phone to at least 70 percent and connect it to a network for setup, following Google’s practical guidance. The reset can take up to an hour. Afterward, sign in with the same Google Account, restore only the data you have verified, install system updates, and reinstall apps selectively from trusted sources. If the symptoms return before you reinstall third-party apps, contact the manufacturer rather than restoring an entire unknown app set at once.
Choosing the least-destructive cleanup route
| Step | Primary target | Reversible? | Local-data effect | Device-specific procedure? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Play Protect scan | Installed apps and app downloads | Yes | May warn about or remove a harmful app | Play Store path is broadly consistent |
| Android and security updates | Operating system and security components | Usually not rolled back by the user | Designed to retain personal data | Labels and locations vary |
| Uninstall suspicious apps | Specific downloaded app | App removal is not reversible unless reinstalled | Deletes that app and its locally stored data | App-management path varies |
| Safe-mode diagnosis | Downloaded-app behavior | Yes; restart to return to normal mode | Does not itself erase personal data | Entry procedure varies by manufacturer |
| Google Account Security Checkup | Account access and sessions | Security changes can be revised | Does not erase phone storage | Account interface can change |
| Factory reset | Entire phone software and storage | No practical undo | Erases all phone data; apps and app data are uninstalled | Reset path varies by manufacturer |
This order prioritizes steps that investigate or remove a likely app without destroying unrelated personal files. No step guarantees removal in every case, so persistent symptoms justify manufacturer assistance.

Common mistakes and what to do instead
Clicking an infection pop-up
A warning in a browser or an ad is not proof that the phone is infected. Close it without calling its number, installing its suggested app, or entering account details. Run Play Protect and inspect installed apps through Android settings.
Assuming a clean scan ends the investigation
Play Protect is an important control, but Google does not describe it as perfect detection. Continue with updates, recent-app review, safe mode, and account security when the behavior remains.
Deleting many apps at once
Mass deletion may remove useful data and leaves no way to identify the cause. Remove recent or untrusted apps individually, restart, and test after each removal.
Resetting before checking backups
A reset cannot recover files that existed only on the phone. Verify synchronization, copy local files, and confirm account credentials first. Remember that restoring Google Account data does not automatically restore every app’s private data.
Ignoring messages sent from your account
If contacts received messages you did not send, secure the Google Account and review its sessions as well as removing suspicious apps. Local cleanup alone may not end unauthorized account access.
A note about antivirus statistics
Google’s Android Ecosystem Security FAQs report that, as of Q4 2020, less than one percent of Enterprise devices had a third-party anti-malware solution installed. That is a dated enterprise-device figure, not a current consumer malware-prevalence rate and not evidence that consumers face no risk. The official remediation guidance for this procedure relies on Play Protect, Android settings, account security, and manufacturer support; it does not establish that purchasing a separate antivirus is necessary.
Quick Recap
Final decision guide
- Only occasional ads or a suspicious app: Run Play Protect, update Android, and remove the recent or untrusted app.
- Symptoms stop in safe mode: Remove downloaded apps one at a time and test after each restart.
- Contacts received messages you did not send: Perform Google Account Security Checkup and secure the account in addition to checking apps.
- Symptoms continue after all reversible steps: Contact the manufacturer and prepare a verified backup before considering a factory reset.
- You cannot verify your backup or credentials: Do not reset yet; recover that access and preserve local data first.
