Start with Google Play Protect, install Android and security updates, remove apps you don’t trust, and review your Google Account security. Pop-ups, redirects, or a slow phone can be warning signs, but none proves by itself that your phone has malware. Save a factory reset for problems that persist: it erases data.

What “virus” symptoms can—and can’t—tell you

People often use “virus” to mean any unwanted software. Google’s guidance uses the terms “malware” and “unsafe software”: as Google puts it, “Malware is unsafe or unwanted software that can steal your info or harm your device.”

Possible warning signs include persistent pop-ups, unexpected browser changes or redirects, poor performance, and messages sent without your action. Browser symptoms can also include unwanted extensions or toolbars and changed Chrome settings. These clues can have other causes, so work through the checks below rather than treating one symptom as a diagnosis. See Google’s Android malware-removal guidance.

1. Scan installed apps with Google Play Protect

Play Protect checks apps when they’re installed and regularly scans apps on the device. If it identifies a harmful app, it may warn you, disable the app, or in some cases remove it automatically.

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Tap your profile icon, then Play Protect.
  3. Open Play Protect settings and make sure app scanning is enabled. If you installed apps from outside Google Play, enable improved harmful-app detection if that option is available.
  4. Run a scan from the Play Protect screen and follow any warning or removal prompts.

Google’s Android Ecosystem Security FAQs describe how Play Protect scans apps. Labels and menu locations can change; if the path differs on your phone, look for Play Protect in the Play Store or its settings.

2. Install Android and security updates

Use your phone’s Settings app to check for an Android software update, a security update, and a Google Play system update. The exact names and locations vary by Android version and manufacturer, so use Settings search for “update” if needed. Google includes both software and security-update checks in its malware-removal steps.

3. Remove apps you don’t trust

Uninstall apps you don’t recognize, no longer need, or don’t trust—especially apps you installed shortly before the symptoms began. Google recommends removing untrusted apps and apps that did not come from the Play Store. If an app seems suspicious, don’t open it to investigate; remove it through your phone’s app settings or Play Store.

If you’re not sure whether a downloaded app is causing trouble, use safe mode as a diagnostic check before removing apps in batches.

4. Use safe mode to narrow down the cause

Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps. If the problem disappears while the phone is in safe mode, a downloaded app is likely involved; safe mode does not identify which app is responsible.

  1. Find the safe-mode instructions for your phone model on the manufacturer’s support site. The startup steps differ between devices.
  2. Use the phone in safe mode and check whether the symptoms continue.
  3. If they stop, restart normally, then remove recently downloaded apps one at a time. Check the phone after each removal to see whether the problem returns.

Google explains this diagnostic process in its safe-mode instructions. Reinstalling an app that caused the problem can bring it back.

6. Reset only if the problems persist

If the signs continue after scanning, updating, removing untrusted apps, and reviewing account security, Google says a factory reset may be needed—or you can ask your device maker for help. A factory reset erases data on the phone, so treat it as a last resort rather than a routine first step. Google’s reset instructions recommend consulting the manufacturer for device-specific directions.

After the cleanup

Reinstall only apps you trust and need. Keep Play Protect enabled and check for updates periodically. These steps reduce risks, but they are not a guarantee against every future threat.

Which step should you try first?

Step Best use Disruption and data risk
Play Protect and updates Start here for a scan and basic security checks. Lower disruption; no phone wipe is involved.
Uninstall untrusted apps Remove apps you don’t recognize or suspect, especially recent installs. Targeted change; removing an app may also remove its local data.
Safe mode Check whether symptoms stop when downloaded apps are temporarily disabled. Diagnostic only; it does not identify an app or remove malware.
Factory reset or manufacturer support Escalate if symptoms continue after the earlier checks. A factory reset erases phone data; manufacturer support is another route.
