If you pressed Windows + R, pasted text with Ctrl + V, and pressed Enter after a fake CAPTCHA told you to do it, treat the computer as potentially compromised. Disconnect it, stop signing in, scan with updated Microsoft Defender, and change account passwords from a different, trusted device. If you only clicked a checkbox and did not run a command, download a file, install an extension, or allow notifications, the risk is lower: close the page, check browser permissions, and remove anything suspicious.

First, identify what actually happened

Fake CAPTCHA pages are part of a social-engineering technique often called ClickFix. The page imitates reCAPTCHA or a Cloudflare verification screen, then claims that you must prove you are human by completing a technical action. The dangerous version silently puts an obfuscated command on the clipboard and instructs you to open the Windows Run dialog, paste the command, and press Enter. Microsoft describes this activity as Trojan:HTML/FakeCaptcha. Malwarebytes has documented pages that use mshta to fetch an encoded payload. Observed payloads have included information stealers such as Lumma Stealer and remote-access malware such as SecTopRAT.

The outcome depends on your action, not on the appearance of the CAPTCHA. A checkbox click, a notification permission, and execution of a clipboard command are separate events with very different consequences.

What you did Likely exposure What to do
Clicked the fake checkbox only The page may have recorded a visit or attempted a download, but no command execution is established. Close the tab, delete any download, review notifications and extensions, and run a Defender scan if anything unusual occurred.
Allowed browser notifications The site can send misleading alerts and links. This does not by itself prove that Windows malware was installed. Remove the site permission and inspect extensions, downloads, homepage, and search settings.
Pressed Windows + R, Ctrl + V, and Enter; ran a file; or installed an extension A payload may have executed. Information theft, remote access, persistence, and follow-on downloads are possible. Disconnect the computer, stop using it for logins, scan and investigate persistence, then secure accounts from a clean device.
Used a work computer or privileged account Business credentials, data, and other systems may be at risk. Disconnect as your organization’s policy allows and contact the security or IT team immediately. Do not perform ad-hoc cleanup that could destroy evidence.

What to do immediately after executing the fake-CAPTCHA command

  1. Disconnect the computer. Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet. If the device is managed by an employer, follow its incident-reporting procedure before taking additional steps.
  2. Stop entering passwords. Do not open banking, email, work, or social accounts on the potentially affected computer. Do not copy sensitive information from it to another device.
  3. Record what happened. Note the page address if you still have it, the approximate time, the exact instructions shown, any file name, and any security alert. A photograph or screenshot from a phone can preserve useful details without reconnecting the computer.
  4. Do not download a cleanup tool from a pop-up. Google’s malware guidance says that a suspicious update or download prompt should be ignored; obtain software only from the product’s official website or use tools already installed in Windows.

The Federal Trade Commission warns that fake CAPTCHA requests can lead people to install malware on their own device and advises acting quickly after a download. A blocked first-stage payload is not proof that nothing changed: Microsoft notes that infections can leave remnant files and system changes.

Run Microsoft Defender correctly

Use a trusted network only for updating security intelligence and, if possible, perform the update before reconnecting the computer for ordinary work. Microsoft states that Microsoft Defender Antivirus automatically removes threats as they are detected, but a single clean result cannot prove that a machine is clean after command execution.

Update definitions, then run a full scan

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Under Virus & threat protection updates, select Check for updates and let the security intelligence update finish.
  4. Select Scan options, choose Full scan, and select Scan now.
  5. Allow quarantine or removal when Defender recommends it. Restart if Windows requests a restart, then review Protection history.

A full scan examines more of the local system than a quick scan and is appropriate when a command or downloaded file ran. Record detection names and paths instead of dismissing them. If the scan is blocked, a detection returns after reboot, or suspicious processes continue, escalate to an offline scan.

Use Microsoft Defender Offline when symptoms persist

In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan and start the scan. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment, which can inspect malware that hides while normal Windows is running. Save open work first. When Windows starts again, return to Protection history and note the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Offline scanning is an escalation, not a guarantee. Repeated detections, disabled security controls, unexplained network activity, or reappearing startup entries require professional or organizational incident response.

Remove fake CAPTCHA notifications and browser abuse

Notification permission is often the part users notice first: the desktop begins showing urgent virus warnings, prize messages, or fake update links. These alerts are browser notifications from a permitted site, not proof that the site has administrative control of Windows. Remove the permission and do not click the alerts.

Google Chrome

  1. Open the three-dot menu and choose Settings.
  2. Select Privacy and security > Site settings > Notifications.
  3. Under sites allowed to send notifications, find the CAPTCHA site or any unfamiliar domain.
  4. Open its menu and choose Remove or Block.
  5. Return to Extensions and remove extensions you did not intentionally install. If an extension is managed and cannot be removed, treat that as a security warning and seek expert help.

Also inspect Settings > On startup, Search engine, and the site’s permissions. Restore a homepage or search provider only after removing the suspicious extension or permission that changed it.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Open the three-dot menu and choose Settings.
  2. Select Cookies and site permissions > Notifications.
  3. Under Allow, remove or block the unfamiliar site.
  4. Open Extensions and uninstall anything you did not choose.
  5. Review Start, home, and new tabs, the default search provider, and recent downloads for changes you cannot explain.

Google’s guidance on unwanted ads, pop-ups, and malware and Malwarebytes’ Chrome and Edge site-control instructions cover the same cleanup areas. If browser settings keep changing back, stop treating the problem as a notification nuisance and investigate Windows persistence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check downloads and permissions

  • Open the browser’s Downloads page and delete files you did not deliberately request. Empty the Recycle Bin after confirming that no legitimate file is being removed.
  • Review site permissions for camera, microphone, automatic downloads, pop-ups, redirects, and JavaScript. Revoke permissions from the fake CAPTCHA domain and other unfamiliar sites.
  • Clear the site’s stored data if the page continues to reopen or display the same prompt.
  • Do not run a file merely because its name resembles a browser update, CAPTCHA helper, document, or security scanner.

Check for persistence in Windows

Malware that survives a restart commonly creates an automatic launch point. Microsoft has documented ClickFix-related entries in scheduled tasks and Run keys, including names such as ScheduledDefrags, 0neNote (with a zero), and ChromeUpdater. The names are examples, not a complete indicator list; legitimate software can also use similar names.

Scheduled Tasks

  1. Press Start and search for Task Scheduler.
  2. Open Task Scheduler Library and sort or inspect tasks by creation time, last run time, and action.
  3. Look for a recently created task that launches PowerShell, mshta, a script, a file in a user profile, or an unusual temporary directory.
  4. Do not delete a task solely because its name is unfamiliar. Check its author, path, trigger, and action; let Defender quarantine a detected item or have a qualified technician review it.

Run keys

Open Registry Editor only if you are comfortable identifying exact entries. Review the common per-user and machine startup locations under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Export a key for evidence before changing it. An unexplained value that points to a recently created script or executable deserves investigation; deleting random registry values can break legitimate software or Windows.

Startup folder

IC3 has documented payloads that drop files into the Windows Startup folder. Press Windows + R, enter shell:startup, and inspect shortcuts or executables you did not create. Also check the all-users Startup folder through the Start menu’s file location tools. Do not open suspicious files. Quarantine them with Defender or have a responder collect and analyze them.

Protect accounts and data from a separate device

If you executed the command, ran a download, or installed an extension, assume that credentials used in the browser may have been exposed until you establish otherwise. Use a phone or another computer that is known to be clean.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

  1. Change the password for your primary email account first, because email can reset other accounts.
  2. Change passwords for banking, payment, work, cloud-storage, social, and password-manager accounts that were open or used during or after the incident.
  3. Use unique passwords and enable multifactor authentication. Prefer an authenticator app or security key where available.
  4. Review active sessions, remembered devices, recovery addresses, forwarding rules, API keys, and newly created app passwords. Revoke anything unfamiliar and sign out other sessions.
  5. Contact your bank or other financial institution if financial credentials or transactions may be exposed. Report suspicious transactions through its official channel.
  6. Tell your employer’s security team if business credentials, customer information, source code, or confidential files were accessible. They may need to revoke tokens, rotate keys, and investigate other endpoints.

Changing a password on the infected computer can simply give a thief the new password. The clean-device rule is therefore essential whenever code execution or a downloaded payload occurred.

When a clean scan is not enough

A scan that reports no active threat is reassuring but not conclusive. Treat the result differently depending on what happened afterward.

Result after cleanup Interpretation and next action
Only a checkbox was clicked; no download, permission, extension, or command execution Browser cleanup and ordinary Windows updates are usually proportionate. Run a scan if a file appeared or behavior changed.
Notifications were allowed, but no command or file ran Remove the notification permission, inspect extensions and settings, delete downloads, and scan if anything remains unusual.
Command or file executed; one full scan is clean and no symptoms recur Complete password resets from a clean device, review persistence locations, keep monitoring, and preserve the scan history.
Detections recur after reboot, security tools are disabled, or tasks/Run entries/Startup files return Disconnect again and obtain professional or organizational incident-response help. Do not keep experimenting on the system.
Ransomware, remote access, data theft, or privileged-account involvement is suspected Escalate immediately. For a personal computer, back up irreplaceable data safely and consider a clean Windows reinstall when the compromise cannot be bounded.

When to reinstall Windows

A clean reinstall is reasonable when you cannot determine what executed, persistence remains unexplained, security controls were tampered with, or a remote-access tool may have given someone control. Back up only personal documents, photos, and other data you have checked from a trusted environment; do not restore unknown executables, scripts, cracked software, browser profiles, or suspicious extensions. Make sure you have recovery keys, license information, and two-factor recovery methods before erasing the device. After reinstalling, apply Windows and browser updates, enable Defender, restore data selectively, and change passwords again if there is any doubt that the old system was accessed.

Common mistakes that make the incident worse

  • Running the CAPTCHA command again to see what it does. The clipboard content is attacker-controlled and may change between visits.
  • Trusting a browser alert that offers a cleaner. Fake warnings commonly lead to another download.
  • Deleting one suspicious file and stopping. A payload may have created scheduled tasks, Run entries, Startup files, or additional downloads.
  • Using the affected computer to change every password. Use a separate, trusted device instead.
  • Deleting unfamiliar system entries indiscriminately. Record and investigate first; incorrect registry or task changes can damage Windows.
  • Assuming a blocked first payload means no infection. Microsoft’s guidance specifically warns about remnants and system changes.
  • Ignoring a work device because the pop-up disappeared. A business incident may involve tokens, shared files, or other machines even when the local symptoms stop.

How to recognize the scam next time

A legitimate CAPTCHA normally asks you to identify images or tick a box inside the webpage. It does not ask you to open Windows Run, paste text from the clipboard, execute PowerShell, install a certificate, disable security software, or download a “verification” program. Be especially skeptical when the page uses urgency, claims that a browser update is required, or instructs you to defeat a security warning. Close the tab instead of following instructions that move from ordinary web interaction to command execution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft Defender Experts reported ClickFix campaigns affecting thousands of devices per month in 2025. That figure describes observed campaign impact, not your personal probability of infection. The practical rule is simple: a click alone is a browser-cleanup problem; execution is a potential incident requiring device isolation, malware scanning, persistence checks, and account protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I infected if I only clicked a fake CAPTCHA checkbox?

Not necessarily. If you did not allow notifications, run a command, download or open a file, or install an extension, the risk is lower. Close the page, remove any download, and review browser permissions and extensions.

Are fake CAPTCHA notifications themselves malware?

They are usually browser notifications granted to a site. Remove the site’s notification permission and do not click the alerts; investigate further if settings return or Windows shows other suspicious behavior.

Is one clean Microsoft Defender scan enough?

No. A full, updated scan is an important step, but command execution can leave remnants or persistence. Use an offline scan when symptoms persist and escalate recurring detections or unexplained startup entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I change passwords after the incident?

Yes, if you executed a command, ran a download, or installed an extension. Change them from a separate trusted device, revoke active sessions, and enable multifactor authentication.
